Report: Kobe Bryant Spoke to Dwight Howard About Playing for the Lakers

According to the LA Times, the Lakers’ front-office has cooled on the Dwight Howard trade talks, but Kobe Bryant reportedly has the Orlando Magic big man on speed-dial: “The Lakers and Orlando haven’t had trade talks in ‘a while,’ according to a person familiar with the teams’ thinking, putting a damper on proponents of a [Andrew] Bynum-for-Howard deal. Howard, 26, can opt out of his contract at the end of the season and become a free agent. Orlando is hoping for the best, thinking a strong season by the Magic might persuade Howard to stay another year, if not longer. The trade deadline isn’t until March 15, but for now there’s no momentum on a deal between the Lakers and Magic. However, one person in the Lakers’ organization has been talking to Howard. Kobe Bryant has had at least one in-depth phone conversation with Howard recently, even discussing how Howard might fit in with the Lakers’ scheme. One person with knowledge of the conversation said Howard came away feeling as if he wouldn’t be the Lakers’ top option, for obvious reasons. It’s Bryant’s team.”

Another dominant BIG to carry the lakers to championships? What else is new.

  • T-Money

diwght is not about that rebounding kobe’s misses life.

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

Dwight would average 10 offensive rebounds playing with Kobe.

  • Ldub

Dwight isnt a “carry a team” kind of player. IMO he doesnt have the killer instinct of a Shaq, Duncan or KG in their day. Those were big men that could take over a game. Anywhere Dwight goes, it will be the same story. He is going to need another really good player (i wont say star) but someone to split the load with. He cant do it by himself. Lakers are his best option. If they can pull Dwill too, that sets up Dwill and D12 for years after Kobe is gone. Get the ‘chip while you can Dwight. It wont happen in Otown

  • Hulahula

Kobe is such paranoid.you already have bynum,go and look for a good pg..ugh chris paul..

  • LA Huey

Ldub, because Shaq and KG certainly carried their teams to a ring being the sole All-Star?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

^ The reason why Tim Duncan > All of them.

  • AD

@Ldub Dwight isnt a carry team kind of player…….. Didnt he take his team to the finals with a sqaud full of jumshooters.. Shaq and Kg had a hall of famer or 2.. CMon Son

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

^Yeah, KG didn’t even get to the finals on his own.

I have to disagree with Ldub I think Howard is THAT guy who can just be a dominating force. Game 1 against the Hawks last year he looked like Shaq in his prime just punishing everyone who got in his way. I just don’t think most people appreciate what he can do because he is surrounded by jump shooters and a coach that is hell bent on the ideology that shooting a contested 3 is better than dumping it in to my franchise player.

Teddy, that’s the reason why TD is the best player since MJ.

I think Kobe should be happy with Bynum. Sure Dwight would be an upgrade, but a new point guard would probably make them serious championship contenders.

  • bike

Bynum must go to bed every night asking himself “why, oh why, doesn’t Kobe like me?”

  • RunNGun

    Isn’t this tampering?

  • robb

Both Bynum and Dwight are underused on their respective teams and if they traded places that wouldn’t change much.

  • robb

and Kobe should know the Lakers need a good PG not a center (smh)

@ad, put everything in perspective, dwight would not have gotten there that year if KG would not had gotten injured that season.

  • Name

You don’t command confidence or respect from your teammates by doing what Kobe does.

  • AD

@ Slick Ric.. Maybe but my point is that No one won a championship on their own…. Everybody had another superstar or at least really good players

  • http://www.slamonline.com Bowen’s Bowtie Collection

    Teddy and jtaylor get it.
Isn’t this tampering? Should bryant be fined?

The reason coming to the Lakers works out perfectly for Dwight is that he’s not ready to be first-option offensively on a championship contender. Kobe has what, 2 more good years (yeah, I know, we’ve been saying that same thing for a couple years now…).

As Kobe’s level drops off, Dwight could increase the offensive burden. Most big-men enter their prime in their late-20′s, that corresponds to when Kobe will be hitting the latter half of his 30′s. Dwight loves the spotlight, where brighter than in Lakerland?

Bynum is a better offensive talent, but vanishes. Dwight is always a presence, even if only on the defensive end. Imagine him swatting a LeBron shot into the third row in a tight game at the Staples Center for the Lakers, the place would erupt. That’s what Dwight would get coming to the Lakeshow, not in Dallas nor for the Nets…

  • Gg

Does Dwight tell the media every phone conversation he has around the league. Dude needs to keep his mouth shut.

Lakers get Howard, then Deron comes for free. Wow CAN’T WAIT!!!

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com O

Read that if Dwight goes to the Lakers the Nets will trade D-Will and the Knicks is first on his wish list. They saying they’d trade either Stat or Melo for D-Will.

  • http://slamonline.com Baller

no NBA players have loyalty these days. Its all about teaming up with superstars now!

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

lol dwight aint coming now. lakers are so pathetic even with a pretty good big 3

  • SportsAddict

Alot of people talked to LeBron when he was a free agent. Its his decision. Coming from a players standpoint, you want to put yourself in a best position to win.

kobe bryant will do anything to get another ring, he’s not happy with five, he’ll even screw over his own team to get what he wants, and if he don’t he will cry like he did once before to get traded to a winning team.
