Report: Timberwolves to Re-Sign Kevin Love at 5 Years, Over $78 Million

According to the Star Tribune, despite all of the consternation and thinly-veiled frustrations caused by these contract negotiations, Kevin Love will get the max from the Minnesota Timberwolves when the dust settles this week: “We’re now not much more than a day away and counting on the NBA deadline for the Wolves to sign Kevin Love and the Wolves have yet to reach a deal on a contract extension with him. One team source told me [last night] that the Wolves are closing in on a five-year maximum contract deal that would pay him more than $78 million and despite such a forthcoming deal, David Kahn hasn’t won any brownie points with Love in this negotiation. Another said that as of Monday afternoon, the team still hadn’t moved off its four-year, $61 million offer. I still believe the Wolves will reach a deal with Love by 11 p.m. Wednesday and it will be that five-year ‘designated player’ deal with Love. An agreement could come as soon as Tuesday morning or considering the unnecessary wait so far, it could stretch toward that deadline, just like the Al Jefferson contract four years wasn’t finalized until just minutes before the deadline. Yes, the Wolves very well can argue that $61 million is still better than Love can do elsewhere as a restrictred free agent next summer and try to call his bluff on it. But anyone who watched Love’s deliver a 39-point, 12-rebound night despite playing ill in Monday’s 107-92 loss to the Kevin McHale-coached Rockets knows where the franchise would be without him: Pretty much right back to 2007, when McHale traded Kevin Garnett away in a package that brought Jefferson from Boston to Minnesota.”

They are stupid!!! Give him everything you’ve got!

  • Justin G.

Not a max player but I guess they have little choice

  • Bravo

I think I may be the only one who hates Kevin love. He is soft

  • RunNGun

Stupid baseless article. Notice there isn’t an author. IMO, the Timberwolves have all the power in determining K-LOVE destination. No matter what happens, he’ll still be in WOLVES jersey. I wouldn’t max LOVE. I’d max RUBIO.

  • Frown4Brown

Not a max player? LMAO! If Love is not a max player then who is. 25 pts 15 rebs 85% FT’s shoots 3pointers and can dish pinpoint accurate long distance passes…he might just be quietly the best player in the league.

    There isn’t an author?
    You mean writer?
Marcel Mutoni wrote the first paragraph, and he quoted Jerry Zgoda of The Star Tribune for the rest.
You think these things write themselves?
Anyways, Soop had the scoop yesterday! He said on Twitter this would go down.
His source was “IAMAGM.COM” but hey, that should be good enough to land him a stint at ESPN!

  • startown

He is soft? Wow, turn on the TV and watch him play. He hit 39 last night, another double/double and he hit the game winner against the Clippers he is elevating his game, which was already outstanding!

frown, best player in the league?????????????? really?? i guess some people only look at the offensive end when determining top nba players.

  • http://www.nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Regardless how you feel about him as a player, and whether you think he deserved the max or not, the Wolves hands were tied on this one.
If they lost him to free agency they’d have to start all over again.
Rubio is a gem of a point guard, but he can’t carry a team scoring-wise, and you really don’t want your team’s best offensive option to be Mike Beasley.
Plus Love leaves, it could create a domino effect, other FAs might leave.
And your draft pick belongs to the Hornets so if Love left after the season it’s not like you could draft an Anthony Davis or Andre Drummond to replace him.

ESPN told me I was too thorough, won’t give me a job because i actually named my source. I was just supposed to say sources. lol
And Love being a Max Player was a forgone conclusion. If you understand at all the business of an NBA team in Minnesota, this was a no-brainer.

  • Jer dawg

It’s a fair deal in comparison to other deals. Westbrook is 2nd fiddle to Durant, and considered top 5 at his position, very talented, and he gets max deal.
Kevin Love is MAIN guy, brings it every night with his efforts and considered top 3 in NBA at his position. He should get as much as Westbrook IMO. Judging by this article it justifies it. There is no arguement, but Wolves made it difficult because of the “business” side of hoops. Heck, if EsPN need to put Wolves and Clippers on Friday night that means they recognize Love is interesting vs. Blake Griffin. Proved right even though, as LA fan, Clips took the loss.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

No, ESPN knows that Rubio is interesting. They put it on for Rubio v Paul. Not Love v Griffin.

  • hushabomb

So if the Wolves don’t sign Love to a max contract, 1) you better hope that you land Sullinger, Davis or Drummond to replace him. 2) the No 1 option on offence is Beasley with his weed smokin and his injuries. 3) this will inspire Rubio to leave when his contract is up. 4) if you decide to trade him, who will ya get? Its not a good thing as now the team you have quietly built, PG’s and all, will be tore up and you now start from scratch.

And Love would look good in any lineup across the league. Imagine Love with these teams.

In OKC with Durant (2 forwards who are dynamic)

In Phoenix where he’d get open shot after open shot and grab every rebound. Nash would average 15 assists cos of his shooting easily.

In NO with Gordon and Okafor and a strong defensive team

In Charlotte where they don’t have a lot of scoring so Kemba can pass to him and Love can learn from one of the best coaches in Silas

In Orlando with Dwight. Love would be awesome there with his shooting. And SVG would be wetting his pants to have him there.

In Milwaukee with Bogut and Jennings. In fact Love will average more assists there cos Jennings can’t pass.

I could go on. Whatever the case, don’t hate on Love cos he’s gonna get the money.

  • LP

Kevin Love isn’t a “MAX PLAYER”, very close though…. but they have no choice but to give him that contract…They made the right move, no brainer. (FYI: Lebron, Kobe, Dwight, Durant, Dirk, Wade are MAX PLAYERS)

  • LP

By the way, players that avg 15 REBOUNDS are not soft. NO WAY!

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

…5 more years in Minnesota….sounds exciting

  • Josh

What does he have to do for you guys to consider him a “max” deal player. Top 5 in scoring and top 2 in rebounds. He’s a work horse who lost 25 pounds on the off season to improve his game. He has had NOTHING around him for four years and is finally starting to see it pay off. The man scores 39 points when he’s sick. Can’t help it no one else shows up on his team, but he is the epitome of a max contract player.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

…I’m tripping, good for the kid

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cheryl

Where will Beasley end up? He’s not long for the league, IMO.

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

they had to do it. but i just dont know. i look at him as a stats guy. he’s not a guy who will carry an organization. but pair him with a truer star and we’re in business

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Beasley will have a long career. Just like Derrick Coleman did.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

Don’t know why I have the strangest thought that once he receives this money he’ll get hurt next year or his stats will decline…ehh no worries not like it’s happened before.

  • LP

A max contract player is an unstoppable player on OFFENSE or DEFENSE. Thats my opinion. When you think KEVIN LOVE, you dont think “UNSTOPPABLE”……Love is a great rebounder. A Top 10 player maybe, but not a MAX contract player…but he DEFINITELY deserves that money, he has put in the time and effort, and obviously the stats show that…

  • ShiQ

A MAX player in MInny IS KEVIN LOVE….this is still a business guys. They haven’t had anyone worth writing home about since KG…they HAVE to make sure Love stays, with the hopes that Rubio will get better become a “name ” or so to speak and stay…THIS is absolutely a NO brainer.

  • T-Money

    I guess.

  • startown

Beasley could be traded. We’ll see how he plays when he gets back from injury, if he fails to share the ball, he will probably be traded.

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance DFrance21

Beasley is Tim Thomas all over again. He’ll be in the league a long time bouncing from team to team with each one hoping that this is the year he reaches his potential… then he’ll retire.

  • http://fklfs.com Jukai

Beasley will stick around till Derrick Williams is worth anything.

  • Justin G.

I agree with LP. A max player does it on both ends of the court and isn’t a stat stuffer. His defense isn’t there yet
