Scottie Pippen: Kobe Bryant Walks, Talks, Plays Like Michael Jordan


While playing a video game (NBA 2K in this instance), Scottie Pippen broaches a number of subjects, including the differences between today’s NBA and the one Pip hooped in. And, of course, Scottie addresses the never-ending Kobe/MJ thing. From ESPN: “When you watch the current-day NBA, what’s the biggest difference in the game that you notice between now and your era? Scottie Pippen: ‘The physicality. People were a lot more physical, fouls were more physical, and the lane was truly sacred in terms of the defense. From early on in basketball, it was a Cardinal sin if you let a guy drive through the lane and get a layup. He could shoot two free throws, but you weren’t letting him get that layup. That’s what that Pistons team established. It was the blueprint that you had to use in terms of winning a championship. You could not give up easy shots.’ Now if there’s one hard foul, people are calling for suspensions. Scottie Pippen: ‘Yeah, and back in the late 80s and early 90s, there was a lot more physical play, and guys really prepared themselves to give it as well as take it.’ […] When you watch Kobe play, does he remind you of Michael at all? Scottie Pippen: ‘I have to say yes to that. I think he reminds a lot of people of Michael because he molded his game after him. He seems to have a lot of Michael’s charisma, and it comes across in the way he walks, the way he talks, and especially the way he plays.’”

    Kobe=Jordan Lebron=Wilkin. When Kobe started nobody new how good he would be like Jordan he played hard and earned his titles Clutch. Lebron is more like Wilkins he was considered great before stepping in the NBA high flying dunks they charge and travel like crazy not great dribblers the NBA trys to hand them titles and they can’t pull it off.

    Why are ppl talking about Kobe passing and defense. If I recall Kobe ripped the ball from, Jordan,Lebron and plenty others. And Far as assist when he passes his teammates always miss. He doesn’t have wade,bosh,pippen,Kerr,Harper,battier on his team just old fisher who drops 8pts a game. I used to hate Kobe but he proved to me he is the second greatest of all time or maybe even tied for number 1

    Kobe is a problem. The best in the league right now, offensively. But he’s no MJ… ON THE COURT! I agree that Kobe has the more likable personality. And that’s saying something.

    If MJ were in todays NBA? odd question. Kobe wants the on court success, lebron wants the off court success. He has stated as much. He cares more about being the richest athlete in the world than basketball. What a waste of 6’8 250 and 40 inch hops. Between MJ and Slam, they made all of what lebron is possible. Kobe on the other hand, would play for free, just to show he’s better than the rest. (not sure he would have done that at 25, mind)

    I’ve had conversations with Pip and yes he has said KB has MJ’s skillset. He even likes that Kobe plays that old school style of ball. I made fun of him of when, still in his prime, he signed with Houston and Kobe embarrased him in the playoffs. Look at those games and you’ll see that Kobe was and always has been a beast.

    You know squat. Just three/four years earlier he was playing at an MVP level. Had the Bulls almost going to the Finals without MJ.

    Kobe doest not have JOrdans game because Jordan stole his game their are no original perimeter moves JOrdans took his whole game from Dr J reverse layups and dunks Elvin Hayes and Elgin Baylor turn around fade aways. Kobe does fade aways and reverse layups and he also took magic johnsons way of passing which was Pete MAravichs first. Students of the game know that the majority of 6’6 or taller shooting guards all play the same way some are just more sucessful at what they do.

    @aktion im sorry… but lebron is by far a better player than dominique. no questions. To say otherwise is displaying basketball ignorance. even the majority of dominique fans concede this. btw since when was kobe’s game old school? what guards in the old school shot 3rd degree jumpers over clear contests all game? I swear it takes a triple team to get the ball out of kobe’s hands sometimes. when he is dead set on shooting the ball up… what can a roleplayer do but watch or crash the boards? they aint gettin the ball

    All scottie did was answer a questoin that a reporter ASKED HIM. You guys trashing scottie for talking about mj but he was asked. remember that. i would have done the same. he gets paid for interviews and probably wont recieve the money unless he answers the questions. after all he played with mj so long people fantasize about what that’s like and want 2 hear it.

    Actually Marcellus, I know plenty. I’m probably older than you and remember all about how Pippen played in the 90′s. If you’re saying that a 33 year old Pippen, who had played I think more playoff games out of any other player at that time and was very banged up, was in his prime still at the time of being traded to Houston then I would venture to say YOU know squat. Yes, three or four years EARLIER he almost took the Bulls to the Finals. When he was 29…you know…around when most athletes are in their prime. Rodman was celebrating his 3 peat with the Bulls too. Was he in his prime? Thanks for coming out though

    The NBA is losing fans over the way its become too violent and thuggish. This isnt a FOOTBALL game on the court. Its supposed to be a game of elegance and intelligence. Take a look back at its history before you believe the NBA was better when it was rougher. Its way past time to get rid of the thug mentality and back to the real game of basketball. Play with dignity or go home to the playground where you belong!
