Scottie Pippen: Kobe Bryant Walks, Talks, Plays Like Michael Jordan

While playing a video game (NBA 2K in this instance), Scottie Pippen broaches a number of subjects, including the differences between today’s NBA and the one Pip hooped in. And, of course, Scottie addresses the never-ending Kobe/MJ thing. From ESPN: “When you watch the current-day NBA, what’s the biggest difference in the game that you notice between now and your era? Scottie Pippen: ‘The physicality. People were a lot more physical, fouls were more physical, and the lane was truly sacred in terms of the defense. From early on in basketball, it was a Cardinal sin if you let a guy drive through the lane and get a layup. He could shoot two free throws, but you weren’t letting him get that layup. That’s what that Pistons team established. It was the blueprint that you had to use in terms of winning a championship. You could not give up easy shots.’ Now if there’s one hard foul, people are calling for suspensions. Scottie Pippen: ‘Yeah, and back in the late 80s and early 90s, there was a lot more physical play, and guys really prepared themselves to give it as well as take it.’ […] When you watch Kobe play, does he remind you of Michael at all? Scottie Pippen: ‘I have to say yes to that. I think he reminds a lot of people of Michael because he molded his game after him. He seems to have a lot of Michael’s charisma, and it comes across in the way he walks, the way he talks, and especially the way he plays.’”

So according to Pippen this equation then holds true : LeBron > Michael = Kobe ??

Scottie Pippen is a damn Troll…but I guess that’s not news.

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

Scotty was a great player, but the guy cant have a conversation that dosnt inclde Mike at some point.

  • Jono

Like we didn’t already know Scottie, fcking hell. Did you also know the road gets wet when it rains?

  • OTB

Wow, just so many Kobe posts.

When he was younger, I will readily admit that Kobe emulated Jordan, whether consciously or unconsciously, from the hoop earrings to his manner of speaking. Nowadays/since Shaq left? Not so much. He has some of the same mannerisms on the court, but that I feel is just a weird coincidence; he’s his own person.

Blah blah blah, we get it.

    The King is still better…

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

If he doesn’t remind you of Jordan you were born after 1998.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

come on Scottie man, stfu. I getting tired of hearing about what scottie thinks of other guys in relation to MJ.

  • http://www.recogthereal.blogspot.com Brandan E.

mJ is the greatest, he gave a blueprint to all players after him how to play the game and what to do to be great!
Kobe is the only player to pick up the blueprint and actually read it and apply it.
Mj & Kobe are the only two players to play hard every night and dint care about off the court stuff. they want to win by any means!

  • Jer dawg

Straight from the horse’s mouth holds weight rather than media interpretation of what THEY observe.

  • wayne

Are u guys dumb or what?? They asked him about Kobe and Jordan he didn’t just bring up Jordan

    Learn to read

  • Jay Cutler

You lot are fork in illiterate morons. He was ASKED to compare Kobe and MJ.

    Can you even read?

  • http://www.pandora.com/#!/stations/play/446494664201913051 Gametimeweezy

Pip is absolutely right. Forget all the basketball gifts, MJ was just cold blooded. MJ is my man but Kobe is easily the closest thing to what MJ was doing in this league.

  • logues

anybody else notice that kobe’s goatee looks just like the one mj grew out at about the same age?

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

    ^like @wayne and @jay cutler

  • robb

Don’t hate on Scottie, he always talks about MJ because people keep asking him about MJ, he’s just answering.

  • http://nbasobrietystrike.blogspot.com/ CoolWhip

He even does the annoying MJ ‘fist pump’ after sex – said Vanessa Bryant

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

He didn’t say he was as good as MJ, he said he played like him. Please explain to me how that is wrong. Kobe obviously modeled his game after MJ.

  • Heals

Charisma on or off the court. Kob’s no Mike off the court. Mike’s impact on and approach to endorsements, advertising, media-relations, player-personas is un-too-itself in that he dominated those aspects. Kob is greatly successful, but has had to share those off the court spoils with more equal counter parts than MJ. On the court more-so, but I hate these comparisons. Not because they are totally unwarranted, but I feel it takes away from the uniqueness of each…

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

^^^^ Mike was nothing off the court, he didn’t state anything socially or stood for anything but himself. Mike is selfish and leading the owners for more money showed you that he is still selfish. Mike didn’t state anything smart off the court. I can make a case through statements that at least Kobe takes a stand on things off the court in the real world. BOOK IT!!

  • Heals

^^^Uuuggghhh, reading comp skills my man, please get em’. I typed advertising, endorsements, media-relations and player-personas, nothing about social impact you tool. But your bean-bag a$$ just had to jump on something you perceived as “hate.” Compare Jordan brand to Kob’s line, it’s not close an never will be. And lastly everyone knows you coped “book it” from that half-wit Bayless so try coming up wit your own material too…

  • http://ZOGS.COM ZOGS

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

OK, Jordan line was the first, and MJ was hyped up beyond anything ever. DDDUUUHHH Kobe line isn’t close, who is endorsement cat. Mike stated nothing smart off the court and if he started playing in this time, the media would kill him, like today athletes get killed. MJ sucked off the court. He was hated, go read advertising cat. ALL of MJ gambling, womanizing and other things would have exploded. MJ is lucky he came when the NBA world was looking for a leader, no matter how many shots he took, how selfish he was, no matter how much teammates hated him or anything else. MJ best statement is “Republicans buy shoes too” MJ lover of player persona’s. BOOK THAT!!!

  • Heals

MJ’s charisma/persona is part of why there is the Jordan Brand Classic, Space-Jam, The Windy-city videogame, the music video with Michael Jackson (that aired on Saturday morning during cartoon hours so it was specifically aimed at kids), other NBA players representing Team Jordan, etc. Kob’s “charisma” hasn’t led to nearly the same off the court impact and can’t…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cheshire

Must suck to always hear about someone else’s name whenever you get talked to…

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

I never liked Kobe, but after LeBroad proved that he didn’t believe in himself enough to carry a team to a title and needed the help of two more franchise players, I actually admire Kobe’s demeanor that much more. Kobe may have sunk his team in the past by taking WAY too many shots, but at lease he never gave up on them…

  • archer

Scottie was ask the question and he answered it…..whats the problem??…..why hate Scottie when u people should be hateing the guy asking the question…..

  • http://sfjklf.com Jukai

Agree, Archer. Some people just hate for the sake of hating.

  • http://nbafullcourtpressure.blogspot.com/ Matt

I agree with Pip. The NBA back then allowed players to be physical and it seperated the boys from the men. Today’s NBA protects its superstars by calling fouls against defenders all the time. I wish the NBA could go back to the way basketball was played back then.

  • http://www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?url=pawtucketymca Gametimeweezy

    Heals good points

  • Dingo Rob

nbk your post are always spot on or the ones I tend to relate and agree to the most. Cheers

All these years of watching Kobe and his first game as a rookie he was always reminded me of Mike, I’ve always liked his game for that for that reason – I didn’t want the magic to end and in Kobe he has kept that alive to a degree.

The young Kobe and Mike photos are great to look at, I think there is one where they both have their hands gripping their short, leaning forward resting on their knees. I still think of the ‘Be like Mike’ ad when I see that.

  • Heals

Seed, my name-calling aside one thing we can agree on is it would be fascinating to observe how MJ would be viewed (fans and media alike) in today’s “climate” given all his off the court activities…

  • robertmavs

little bit,but at least he didnt say that kobe is next jordan.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    Appreciate it

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Michael Jordn is definitely better than Jordan, but Kobe is probably the closest we’ll ever get to another Jordan.

  • http://www.youtube.com/youthfan22 jay taylor

scottie pippen was a great defender and scorer…one of the most underated to win 6 championships…I loved his game…he brung it every night…and I hated the bulls…but gotta give credit where credit is do!!!

  • robb

Kobe’s great, I’m a big fan, but he wishes he had half of MJ’s charisma. MJ’s influence on and off the court was huge, denying that is just idiotic.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

He doesn’t shoot, defend, or pass like MJ. Yes, he plays like MJ but he doesn’t dominate the game like MJ did.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Who said he did? He just resembles him.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Fair enough but when someone says he plays like him, I take it as he affects the outcome of a game the exact same way MJ did. I might be pushing it though.

  • Drig

Why is this news??? Baylor gave the blueprint to MJ. MJ to Kobe yada yada yada……

And JT, I’d be willing to go head to head with ANYONE to prove that Kobe is just as good a offensive player as MJ was. MJ>Kobe all day on D but on O, Kobe>MJ at everything BUT finishing at the rim (with his godly hands) However, all of this only applicable provided we consider both are healthy. ( I’m looking at you, Kobe )

  • http://www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?url=pawtucketymca Gametimeweezy

Drig – Kobe’s better on the offensive end then MJ?
And all MJ can do better was finish at the rim?
    thats sayin a lot…
Jordan also had one of the best fadaways in the post ever… including all guards and bigmen, better then Kobe’s

Kobes loved MJ so much his alarmclock sounded like ” Sometimes i dream , that he is Me ….. ”

Thats why im not a fan. MJ was 10times better + he made players around him better unlike Mamba , who makes his own(all starr) players stand about. The original MJ was great, i cant say that about Kobe. If Kobe hits a gamewinning shot in the finals , i might rethink.

  • Booyahhh

@AQWORD. Jordan never made any of his teammates better!!! It was all about him him him. If Jordan made everyone around him soooo much better then why did his teams field goal percentage go way up when he retired??? Scottie’s field goal percentage sky rocketed! It took the Knicks 7 games to knock the Bulls out of the Eastern Conf Finals that year. Kobe easily has the better range over Jordan and Kobe has more range with his fade away than Jordan ever did.. Having said that, Jordan was more explosive taking the ball to the basket. Jordan and Kobe are not players that MAKE their teammates better.. For that see: Magic Johnson. Peace.

  • Justin G.

Wow, how dare Scottie answer a direct question with his opinion? What an idiot! Man you people are idiots

  • Yesse

    Pippen should just shut up.

  • Justin G.

So Yesse, how should he have answered the question? No comment?

  • http://www.adultism.com justlenny

    lol BOOK IT!

  • aktion

Kobe=Jordan Lebron=Wilkin. When Kobe started nobody new how good he would be like Jordan he played hard and earned his titles Clutch. Lebron is more like Wilkins he was considered great before stepping in the NBA high flying dunks they charge and travel like crazy not great dribblers the NBA trys to hand them titles and they can’t pull it off.

  • aktion

Why are ppl talking about Kobe passing and defense. If I recall Kobe ripped the ball from, Jordan,Lebron and plenty others. And Far as assist when he passes his teammates always miss. He doesn’t have wade, bosh, pippen,Kerr,Harper, battier on his team just old fisher who drops 8pts a game. I used to hate Kobe but he proved to me he is the second greatest of all time or maybe even tied for number 1

  • PhillyFANatic

Kobe is a problem. The best in the league right now, offensively. But he’s no MJ… ON THE COURT! I agree that Kobe has the more likable personality. And that’s saying something.

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

Dunno why some folks are butt hurt. He is obviously talking about Kobes mannerisms and style of play. And we all that one of his basketball idols, he has said so himself.

  • jimmer

If MJ were in todays NBA? odd question. Kobe wants the on court success, lebron wants the off court success. He has stated as much. He cares more about being the richest athlete in the world than basketball. What a waste of 6’8 250 and 40 inch hops. Between MJ and Slam, they made all of what lebron is possible. Kobe on the other hand, would play for free, just to show he’s better than the rest. (not sure he would have done that at 25, mind)

  • roman

He’s still pissed about the Portland series. Damn that was along time ago.

  • http://juan.garcia@computershare.com Marcelus Wallace

I’ve had conversations with Pip and yes he has said KB has MJ’s skillset. He even likes that Kobe plays that old school style of ball. I made fun of him of when, still in his prime, he signed with Houston and Kobe embarrased him in the playoffs. Look at those games and you’ll see that Kobe was and always has been a beast.

  • Justin G.

Pippen was hardly in his prime in Houston

  • http://juan.garcia@computershare.com Marcelus Wallace

You know squat. Just three/four years earlier he was playing at an MVP level. Had the Bulls almost going to the Finals without MJ.

  • http://juan.garcia@computershare.com Marcelus Wallace

A year earlier was celebrating another 3peat with MJ. How old are you? 15?

  • this article is stupid

Kobe doest not have JOrdans game because Jordan stole his game their are no original perimeter moves JOrdans took his whole game from Dr J reverse layups and dunks Elvin Hayes and Elgin Baylor turn around fade aways. Kobe does fade aways and reverse layups and he also took magic johnsons way of passing which was Pete MAravichs first. Students of the game know that the majority of 6’6 or taller shooting guards all play the same way some are just more sucessful at what they do.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

that was quite possibly the most stupid comment i’ve read in a LOOOOONG time.

  • wishuwould247

  • feez_22

@aktion im sorry… but lebron is by far a better player than dominique. no questions. To say otherwise is displaying basketball ignorance. even the majority of dominique fans concede this. btw since when was kobe’s game old school? what guards in the old school shot 3rd degree jumpers over clear contests all game? I swear it takes a triple team to get the ball out of kobe’s hands sometimes. when he is dead set on shooting the ball up… what can a roleplayer do but watch or crash the boards? they aint gettin the ball

  • heals is a tool

Heals please don’t get so offended and start name calling because it just makes you look like a tool. You get offended like its completely relevant to your life.

  • MR B

Doesn’t this guy shut up. He has something to say about every one. If you go back to MJ days, you can say he walk and talk like some one else in the NBA. This is so ridiculous and only a kid would pay attention. Scotty, get over it. Your team mate called Kobe the best player in basketball and better then MJ. I admit that MJ has the biggest ego in basketball getting close to Donald Trump who has the biggest in the world.

  • http://www.t-mac.com/tmac/index unf*ckwitable

Who better to mold your game after? I think Kobe is a douche but he gets it done for his team.

  • http://none gre123123

All scottie did was answer a questoin that a reporter ASKED HIM. You guys trashing scottie for talking about mj but he was asked. remember that. i would have done the same. he gets paid for interviews and probably wont recieve the money unless he answers the questions. after all he played with mj so long people fantasize about what that’s like and want 2 hear it.

  • Long

Nobody cares what pippen thinks. He doesnt like Kobe so of course he would say that.

  • swole G

kobe is not like jordan hes better he has did things jordan haven did and jordan did stuff he have did but look at his game he surrounded by alot of no name and jordan wasnt i love the both tho

  • Justin G.

Actually Marcellus, I know plenty. I’m probably older than you and remember all about how Pippen played in the 90′s. If you’re saying that a 33 year old Pippen, who had played I think more playoff games out of any other player at that time and was very banged up, was in his prime still at the time of being traded to Houston then I would venture to say YOU know squat. Yes, three or four years EARLIER he almost took the Bulls to the Finals. When he was 29…you know…around when most athletes are in their prime. Rodman was celebrating his 3 peat with the Bulls too. Was he in his prime? Thanks for coming out though

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

really,,some of u don’t have a basketball clue,,,,yall obviously forgot,,,10 scoring titles,,5 mvp’s,,,6 finals mvps..led the league in steals 3 times !!!! now put kobes numbers up and compare !!! it’s not close ,,,, kobe is great but not in mjs class,,,sorry all u bball fans who just started watching hoops,,,please stop it !!!! not to forget he averaged 41.0 points a game in the finals,,,!!!!

  • ed

scottie is right kobe actually used to be worse old interviews manerisms voice similar to jordan. thats why i hate when kobe says i was a magic fan just admit it you loved jordan just like we all did

  • ME

…..lmao…lol…rotf …my cousins said “and Kobe cheats on his wife like MJ”. lol

  • GroovyDude

The NBA is losing fans over the way its become too violent and thuggish. This isnt a FOOTBALL game on the court. Its supposed to be a game of elegance and intelligence. Take a look back at its history before you believe the NBA was better when it was rougher. Its way past time to get rid of the thug mentality and back to the real game of basketball. Play with dignity or go home to the playground where you belong!

  • http://slamonline house

90′s NBA owns 2k+ NBA, more physical etc etc bring back handchecking!@. Its still somewhat enjoyable to watch though.
