Stephen Curry ‘Very Disappointed’ He Didn’t Qualify for Olympic Team

Stephen Curry wasn’t one of the 20 hopefuls selected by USA Basketball for the 2012 Olympic team, and he says that it was a very big disappointment for him. From the San Fran Chronicle: “Curry was one of two players (along with Indiana’s Danny Granger) from the 2010 World Championships team left off the USA Basketball finalists roster for the 2012 Olympics. Then, his sprained right ankle didn’t respond as well as he had hoped at practice, creating doubt that he’ll make his targeted return today against the Cavaliers. Director of USA Basketball Jerry Colangelo announced a 20-man roster that he’ll trim to 12 by June 18. The list didn’t include Dallas’ Jason Kidd or Phoenix’s Michael Redd from the 2008 Olympic team, or Granger or Curry from the gold-medal squad at the 2010 World Championships. Forwards Blake Griffin of the Clippers and LaMarcus Aldridge of Portland were added to the roster. ‘I’m very disappointed,’ Curry said. ‘I got a chance to try out for the World Championships team, actually made it and won a gold medal. I wanted to repeat that experience. It’s very disappointing, but it’s just motivation for 2016.’”

It’s natural to be disapppointed, but let’s be honest. Who in that squad that got picked, would you drop for Curry, even when he’s fully, 100% healthy? Billups, maybe? That’s about it.

  • Kobester

He’s like what, 21 years old? There will be plenty of chances for him to show off his talents on the international stage down the road. Patience young man, patience……

  • AD

he’s not better than any pg on the roster but…. he has time… needs to wory about staying healthy

Curry needs to understand he isn’t an elite guard just yet. CP3, D-Will, Rose, and guys of that character have earned their stripes in this league. If anyone should be upset about not being chosen, it should be Rondo.

don’t be, you’re not that good.

As a shooter, you take Curry over Billups and Westbrook. BOOK IT!!

  • No Thanks

The Olympic game are far more suited for a player of Curry’s inclinations than those of Paul, Rose or Williams. Although in the NBA their style of play dominates, a zone defense cannot be beaten by splits, dunks and runners. The Olympic team would have taken Curry had he been healthy. It how he plays, not how well that makes him a front runner.

DWill and CP3 weren’t gonna get knocked off the roster because of him (they play international bball just fine. See: 2008 Olympics) and neither was westbrook (he was their best guard in 2010). I know his style fit international play better than Rose, but there’s no way you’d leave rose off in favor of Curry. Maybe Rose would get the axe cuz he wears addidas and curry’s with nike but rose is too good not to be on the roster.

Rondo? LOL, I would have to say that I would definitely take Curry (with a bum ankle) over Rondo for 1 simple fact. SHOOTING. You could slide curry to the 2 in international ball and let him knock down the corner J. For Rondo to be effective, he has to have the ball in his hands. You arent going to win “team” basketball in the olympics when everyone in the universe knows Rondo cant shoot. @K.Holiday.

  • robb

I’d hate it if his career went to hell due to injuries. This kid can really play.

Ankles and maybe Billups is right. Rondo does other things better.

Curry over Billups is no brainer. Chauncey is a gamer and a leader no doubt (Olympic team has enough leaders), but I think he’s overrated. No one mentions he’s a career 41% shooter. Not a single soul. Dude is shooting at a 35% clip this year.

^^^^^^^I have been saying he is overrated for years. Cosign 100%. I read comments and everyone came back with the Leadership Stuff, are yall serious. What Leadership has he displayed in Denver. The team exploded the last two years in Denver and really bad that year against the Lakers. Where was Billups then, with his so call leadership, why can’t Billups leadership keep Melo straight, why can’t Billups leadership help J.R. Smith out, why hasn’t his leadership got them to a NBA Finals. I am tired of the leadership card being used with him. Also really ask yourself does Billups make any player better, tell me. In Detroit, Hamilton, Big Ben were all ready good and Prince started with a break out game and kept balling. Billups as a HALL OF FAME guard only averages 5 assists game and 3 rebounds and people compare him to Jason Kidd. LOL. This dude is living off of many years ago playoff performance and also people need to chk his last years in Detroit about what the media was saying about his game, Joe Dumars and others. Also he was the prime reason they couldn’t get back to that level, because he became an “I” player looking to hit big shots rather than make the right passes. His assists numbers are too low for my point guard list, but he is a great Leader because he helped lead a team with other good players like him to a 2004 Finals ring. EIGHT YEARS AGO doesn’t make you a leader now. .BOOK IT!!!

For some reason I thought the headline read Eddie Curry as I was laughing my @$$ off.

  • Justin G.

No Thanks…you know these guys play against zones in the NBA as well right? Just sayin’

  • Mike From Spain

@ Justin G-> there is no defensive 3 second violation or restricted area in FIBA basketball. Zones are different. Just saying.

  • marc

It has to be the ankle. He will make it next time if he is healthy.

  • DerekG

Curry needs to concentrate on getting healthy. Maybe he should seek out Grant Hill for some advice as to how best to proceed cos his bum ankle is just disrupting a promising career!

  • Chan.B

Curry isn’t that good?! Are you crazy?? He avg 30 points in college…he’s easily a top 5 PG! He already WON A GOLD MEDAL! And Its funny nobody said anything about Eric Bledsoe who made it over Curry…I guess he’s better tho right? Lol yeah riiiiight most of you don’t even wat h Steph Curry play…he’s effective at ALL times on the court…don’t be ignorant and arrogant…it’s does not mix well at all…he only didn’t make it because of the injury…btw he EARNED that GOLD medal as a ROOKIE people…
