Allen Iverson Nearly Accepted Offer to Play in Venezuela

Jorge Hernandez was certain Allen Iverson would put basketball on the map in Venezuela—up until this morning. Hernandez, co-owner of Guaros de Lara in the Venezuelan League, was to introduce Iverson today as the team’s new point guard. Playing alongside Smush Parker, Iverson would bring unprecedented attention to Guaros.
“Everything was ready for his debut on Wednesday,” Hernandez told Venezuelan sports newspaper, Lider en Deportes. But Hernandez spoke too soon.
At 9 a.m. this morning, Hernandez received a call and was told that Iverson “does not want to leave the United States.” Speculation is that Iverson’s legal problems are keeping him in US for the time being.
Iverson’s most recent return to basketball has been bumpy to say the least. The Lakers considered signing Iverson this year, but Iverson dismissed L.A. when they asked him to play in the D-League first.
Guaros reportedly hasn’t lost hope of signing Iverson, but they’re not waiting for him either. “We thanked him for taking the time to analyze the offer,” Hernandez said.

MAKE MONEY MONEY, MAKE MONEY MONEY WHAAAAT!
I’m sure he’s not broke, given he probably has assets he can liquidate everywhere.
But he’s clearly not happy about the lifestyle he has to be living now.
It seems like the entire league and most of the fans have been waiting for a chance to publically humiliate Iverson for years. I don’t get why that is. Sounds like a case fo the donkey kicking the dying lion to me.
@anonymous – most of the players you named are bigs. Teams will always gamble on a big. Why gamble on Iverson at his age, with his well-documented history of issues? Save that roster spot and salary slot and gamble on a big who might have something left or a young kid that might develop and contribute down the road. Also, several players you named are hanging around because they have guaranteed contracts. Gotta pay them, might as well see if they can earn it. People just need to realize that AI is old in terms of athlete years and older than the sands of time in terms of little guys who rely on athleticism. We all need to realize that our heroes are mortal and they can’t play forever.
What if Wade was traded to Memphis cuz of his reaction and asked to be a sub for conley In Denver he was a model citizen, in philly he was the glue guy per say
and a big influence on the yung guys so much so he was invited to lu will summer lockout game where his old slow self was the catalyst for a comeback and also crossed up jef teauge so no he’s not a cancer. yes he can be a elder states man
and in Turkey he played Team ball, not even once did he attempt to score 30 or played selfish so yes he can fit in and gel in a team concept, plus his speed has always been over hyped and has been in a weird twist his downfall
as ppl think his game was based entirely on speed Truth is he has a very good jump shot streaky because he had a tendency to take Kobe like shots(difficult) if he plays smart & take easier shots which he did in Denver posting career highs in fg and 3pt % so he was also playing smarter Not making excuses he did some dumb stuff made mistakes here and there, but after the games they dont ask kobe about his divorce, colorado or even practice(had to say that) but they ask about the game Thing is with AI they dwell on the negatives
