Deron Williams on Jeremy Lin: ‘What Phenomenon?’

Careful, D-Will. Things didn’t turn out so well for Kobe Bryant and the Lakers when he tried to downplay the magic of Linsanity. From the NY Daily News: “Why would we get excited about the Knicks? We’re 8-21, I’m worried about us, not what Jeremy Lin’s doing,’ he said. Williams — a father of four — said he doesn’t watch television, not since giving it up while playing overseas in Turkey. So he playfully pleaded ignorance when asked about Lin, even though the sensation started after the Knicks point guard scored 25 points against Williams. ‘What phenomenon?’ Williams asked. Finally, after the fifth question about Lin, he cut off the subject. ‘Ya’ll got anything about tonight? Anything that’s relevant with us?’”

Better watch out DWill. It will serve you best next time whenever someone asks you about Lin to sing his praises and compare him to slice bread because if not you will be labeled a racist.

  • B

Cant blame him saying that… He has to look out for his own team…. But Lin is that GUY right now….

  • B

Wow jtaylor must be a heat fan… Sounds like a bitter fella to me… Or maybe a laker fan… Lol

  • LA Huey

I think this is a tad different from Mamba. Though the Lakers ship is sailing on rough waters, it aint sinking like the Nets. It’s about priorities. If a player’s team sucks (especially a player of Deron’s caliber), you should only have two focuses righting the ship and taking care of your family. No time for leisure when you got big dreams and stuck in a nightmare.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com/ Seth

In DWill’s defense, I’d be tired of JLin questions too. He’s everywhere.

  • http://letcramzycook.tumblr.com/ cramzy

wait, why was it noted that he’s a father of four?

  • KSupreme

I’m all about jeremy lin and love reading everything about the kid, but it really is unnecessary to be asking other players who aren’t facing him that night or haven’t faced him yet about Lin.

  • http://www.nba.com Red

    co-sign K, I’ve noticed that too.

  • l2ising Phoenix

    Damn Dwill got madd kids.

  • KSupreme

But I guess the reason why people ask this is because anything with Lins name on it sells their papers, magazines, tv station etc. And helps market the NBA ie when Lebron and the heat beat the pacers and was asked about jeremy lins game winner (and receiding hairline). Totally irrelevant to the teams win. No one raved about Kobes or Chris Pauls game winners.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Co-sign KSupreme. Deron wasn’t even badmouthing Lin. Kinda ridiculous actually.

  • Riggs

I hate reporters asking other players about Lin for no reason, but I also hate people blaming Lin for the media hyping him up. Dude is just going out there and playing ball, he isn’t calling reporters to come follow him right after.

  • http://www.twitter.com_dfrance dfrance21

@cramzy I was thinking the same thing, it had no relevance to this already irelevant story. It’s hard to find fault with DWill’s reaction when he’s being asked a question that has nothing to do with him or his team.

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

Deron is mad because he wanted to go to the Knicks

  • robb

Deron just wants people talking about the Nets, not the Knicks, too bad there’s not much to talk about other than him being the league’s leader in turnovers.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    good point riggs.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

C-sign, Riggs. It’s pretty stupid asking EVERYBODY in the NBA about Lin. I get that people want the opinion of the elite players, but what do they care and should they care about someone who isn’t on their team? This only makes other players want to put it on Lin in the game. Did you see the Toronto game last night? He was getting fouled HARD. Dudes is starting to build an animosity towards the kid…

  • http://thatdavidhopkins.com David Hopkins

Lin is a spectacle to behold. However, if I were DWill, I’d be annoyed too.

  • AD

you stupid Naive Knicks fans want evrybody to ride the lin wave off of 6 games.. really he’s been playing great but why ask a player off of the rival or future rival team about his play…. Thats like asking Kobe how do you feel about the Clippers success…..
When dwill gets dwight there will be no more Jlin talk in NY.

  • MrDB

Williams was tired of being asked about Lin by the beat writers, he wasn’t trying to dis Lin. It’s not surprising to see SLAM trying to create fake news, your sh!tty magazine hasn’t been credible for years now. Instead of trying to generate bootleg controversy, why not spend time chasing after some 8th grader and proclaiming him to be the next god of basketball like you guys used to do back in the day?

  • T-Money

i get why deron finds it annoying but it’s not lin’s fault (not saying that deron is implying that either). it’s like when lazy writers ask people – even outside of basketball – what they think of lebron. who cares?

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

The media hype around Lin is smothering news about the rest of the league. It’s really starting to turn off hardcore NBA fans who would be otherwise rooting for the guy. But don’t hate Lin for it — its the media that creates this hype. The same writers that are calling him a “possible all-star” and a “legendary” point guard are the ones that are going to be calling him a bust or a fraud when he has a bad game.

  • bull22

i will give credit to lin for being better then some of the scrubs (except the lakers) he is playing against. dont get to exicted yeah. new jersey, utah, washington,la lakers, minnesota, toronto. 3 of these teams have not even reached double-digit victories. one is barely 500 and another is a double-digit win team one game under 500. iam so looking foward when lin plays hardcore defenses and see how he does.

  • Heals

Do you D, the real heads know what you been doing for YEARS not days…

  • Paul H

Dwill calm down. Someone feeling a bit marginalized out In the swamps?

  • Mooney10

NBA’s Tebow, kind of dumb. Wouldn’t be nearly as much hype if he weren’t asian. I think he is a good player that has a lot of upside due to his lack of years and experience, but nothing to drool over, I can name at least 12 gurads that would eat him alive on the court. Not to mention Lin cannot play defense against elite guards, he’d look like Jimmer guarding the likes of Rose, Rondo, Westbrook, Jennings, Paul, Wall, etc Anyone not named Fisher or Calderon. How many turnovers did he have against the lowly Raps? I counted 2 in the 2nd alone!

  • Bawse

I think DWILL is tight because his team sucks.

  • Ratmandu

On DWill’s fatherhood: one of the reasons he doesn’t watch TV is that he’s got a bunch of young kids which–because he’s a solid dad and not a deadbeat like some other ballers–takes a ton of time to look out after. I don’t blame him one bit for being steamed about talking about a Knicks player at all. Athletes are competitive–do folks expect non-Knicks to give two figs about Lin playing 6 games?

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85Bl3GRdULQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player 1982

    JTaylor21 with wise words.

*and on our sports news today , lin dunks on d will to get the w for new york as the knicks cruise by… deron ,FATHER OF FOUR, didnt take it so good as he was last seen on the locker room screaming ” what about my team?!” doctors who seen him are saying he is suffering from Linsanity…seriously though this guys story starts to have similarities with batmans. ;p

  • bike

It is too bad the media is going so far over the top with this guy. The real story is that Lin is playing at a level unheard of for a guy that went undrafted and then let go by another nba team. And the fact that he is Asian and a Harvard graduate to boot just adds more to this feel good story. But he hasn’t done anything to get the respect of many nba vets. Not yet anyway. I’ll bet that there is some resentment slowly building among some players and they know they have to be very careful what they say about the guy.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

That argument you keep making about being labeled racist is BS. You sound like cats who whine about being called racist all the time when they defend or express ridiculous sentiments.
Nobody has called me a racist yet and I’ve questioned Lin several times. It’s just a cheap argument.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

And Dwill just didn’t want to participate in the collective handjob the media is hell bent on giving Lin. That’s all.

  • 23

this is another example of the media twisting a dudes words

Deron Williams just wants to focus on his 8-21 team. Nothing wrong with that. I imagine he’s frustrated with losing. Can’t say that I blame him. The Nets beat reporters should just wait to ask him about Lin when the Nets are 9-24 and set to face the 17-15 Knicks at MSG next Monday. That would be a better time to broach the subject, in my honest opinion.

  • Ldub

I am lowkey anxious to see the Knicks when Melo returns. IMO Lin is able to do all of this because the Knicks can Run and Gun which is what coach MD wants. Melo and Stat both slow the pace down. Argument can be made they ran last night. But that was with just Stat. Melo will change the dynamic of the game. That is his game, always has been. Takes his time to get his shots. Lin wont get 20 shots up with both Melo and Stat on the floor. And he has definitely got to work on those turnovers. Dude is ballin right now, no argument about it. However he is doing it without the 2 main stars in NY.

And I agree with Dwill. Cant be concerned with what another team is doing when they are 8-21. If that record was switched, maybe there would be cause for concern with Lin coming in, or them going up against the Knicks for a cross town rivalry. But not now.

  • Nella

DWill is notorious for being short, curt, rude, or condescending towards reporters. It’s just compounded when the Linsanity is going on.

  • http://slamonline.com. datkid

lmao this is not news… and also the Lin backlash has arrived….

  • http://www.dimemag.com showtime

Nothing to see her , D will just saying he focus on him & his team , why praise anthor??/

  • http://www.dimemag.com showtime

    here * & another*

  • Cool Dude

I’d be mad too if I got asked about someone who came out of nowhere to drop 25 on me.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85Bl3GRdULQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player 1982

DWill averages 17 and 9 for his CAREER. 20 and 8 this year. I’m following Lin as much as the next person, but stop acting like DWill ain’t ish.

  • hushabomb

@Cool dude. Oh how right you are ;) . The Knicks fans should worry about themselves. Cos while we all like him now, what’s gonna happen when everyone starts to hate on Lin. When DRose turns all those TO’s he has into fastbreak points. When he drives to the lane and everyone does the “Jordan Rules”. When he loses a critical game cos he missed the jumper with 0.3 seconds on the clock. When DWade and co press him full court then run him thru hard screen after hard screen cos you know they know what’s going on and they wanna show the young kid what its really like in the “NBA”. The media will hate on him more because of that. While its awesome to see a young kid brimming with confidence and playing like Mike has possessed him, soon (and it will be soon) the hate will come. What’s everyone gonna do then???? @Jlin7, if you read this, play smart, get your team involved at every opportunity, play both ends of the floor. When you do this you’ll win every game. On another note, would he get the same hype if he was playing on another team? Like the Bobcats or Hornets? Would he be some guy getting stats on a losing team (don’t wanna hate on him, just a question that’s all)

  • WS

Lol at “Careful, D-Will.” Where do you see Deron downplaying anything? He’s sick of the unnecessary questions, and I would be too.

  • tomtom

Why do people find it so hard to believe that professional athletes don’t watch much TV? Nothing to see here imo.

  • bull22

lin has three big litmus tests coming up this month against excellent teams-
dallas, atlanta and miami, everyone else is just bottom-feeders. but that is not even the biggest test, that will come in beginning of march when 5 of the 6 teams will include boston, chicago, san antonio, philadelphia and dallas.
he goes 4-2 against that tough stretch he is the new man in ny, anything less then that and he is just another cat on a learning curve.

  • MrAir239

I’m so tired of this Lin hype. Leave the dude alone. Yes, I know he’s doing very well and I’m glad for him. But, can we please cool it with the Headline stories about Lin? It’s getting to be very annoying. While, he has been doing well, I want to see him go against a defensive-minded team i.e. Heat, Bulls, Thunder kinda. Put him on that stage and see how he does then I’ll agree that he is a very good player. Until then, I’m not on his bandwagon.

  • http://nbasobrietystrike.blogspot.com/ CoolWhip

“Yes we do Deron…how would you feel about playing with Jeremy Lin?”

  • MrAir239

Also, he has played against some of the teams that don’t even see play-off action. I.e. the nets, kings, raptors, jazz, wizards. The Lakers are the only decent team Lin has played against and they’re struggling this year.

  • hyperactice

While everyone is busy over-hyping lin, I would be a little more concerned about “what this stretch of games, by a player whose seeing his first real minutes in the league, says about the quality of today`s game?” It seems like about two-thirds of the league is either under or hovering around the .500 mark. Because of this, there is an exceptionally high probability of playing a mediocre, bad, or flat-out horrendous team from one night to the next. Even the teams with nice overall records (well over .500) like orlando, lal, philly, san ant, and so on … have major issues. Orlando is totally dependent on the 3-point shot (as they proved in the 1st round of last year`s playoffs) and they`re still dealing with the dwight dilemma. lal`s backcourt is beyond repair (fisher, blake) and their offense has been at a stand-still since the first game of the season. philly is a good team with no explosion, a questionable frontcourt, and an inconsistent offense. And san antonio is a good regular season team with minimal playoff potential – probably 2nd round knockout. There are no “great” teams and the greatest-talents are concentrated in just a few organizations. The remaining talent is unevenly distributed among the rest of the league resulting in bad quality.

  • Rich

I remember when players in the NBA hated each other because they wanted to win. It would’ve been impossible to put together “big 3′s” back then. Today, you have players hangin out w/ each other like Lebron, rudy gay, chris paul and other dudes who are supposed to be rivals. the game has changed quite a bit.

  • http://www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?url=pawtucketymca Gametimeweezy

Relevant question? You really want to talk about why New Jersey is 8-22 while New York has won 7 in a row…

Agreed Gametimeweezy…I bet Deron Williams is longing for those days in Utah when he was on a winner under Jerry Sloan.

  • BBaller

@ AllenP in regards to noone calling you out,ah yes they have , refer to Izzo ‘s post Feb 15th at 12:31pm on the thread with Shaq saying Dwight leaving Orlando would be a travesty.I used to say about 5 or 6 years ago i really respected your comments but lately and especially when it comes to race related issues i’ve found you are really ignorant and i know you are from African American descent but that doesn’t entitle you to be racist. A racist is a racist, whether you are white, black, pink, yellow, or any colour. Mate you need to only comment on BBall related topics( that’s what you are good at) leave all other aspects of life alone. RIP AllenP of 2007

  • BBaller

I’m not trolling but AllenP is getting on my nerves with every link i go to.

  • marc

I have to do a paper on media and sports. And I knew i wasnt the only one that thought Lin is being real hyped up. He’s a good basketball player but to ask other players how they feel about him is quite annoying.

  • http://www.racialicious.com/2012/02/15/memewatch-adventures-in-linsanity/#more-20490 Allenp

Izzo was being sarcastic. He and I knew that because he and I have been commenting here for far too long.
But you’re entitled to believe whatever you want to believe about me, and feel however you want to feel. I’m completely cool with that.

  • http://postcardstotrangers.com Abrondon

Yeah, what does the father of four part have to do with anything? Is the reporter they just trying to throw in random facts to look like an insider? “Deron Williams – who’s favorite snack is Lorna Doones – says Jeremy isn’t all that Linsational.”

I love the Jeremy Lin story and have blessed with six kids by birth and adoption. So what?

  • xx_JOMOMMA_xx

    RIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Memphis over Chicago in 6…. Print it.

  • Dwight Love

The first time Williams met Lin he got the better of him the second time it was a different story. After Miami played physical against Lin other teams started doing the same thing.
