George Karl Thinks the New York Knicks Will Struggle in the Playoffs

Most coaches and players around the NBA do their best to avoid making pointed critisms of opposing teams, but George Karl isn’t like most people (which tends to occassionaly get him in trouble.) He tells ESPN Radio that the Knicks aren’t really built for postseason success. From Larry Brown Sports: “The thing I don’t like about the situation is all this stuff is happening with very little practice time,’ Karl said. ‘So you’re kind of meshing different personalities and different people on the court, and you’re going to have to do it on the job, in the game situation, and that’s how you’re going to have to do it. That’s not the easiest thing to do from a coaching standpoint. I don’t think they’re going to get out of the bottom half of the draw, so I think they’re going to draw one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference (in the playoffs). I’ll be honest with you, I think it’s going to be very difficult for them this year to put the pieces together to figure out how to beat one of those top three or four teams.’”

Of course they will. Amare, Lin and Melo are lousy on D. Any team that wants to make it far in the playoffs can’t afford to start so many bad defenders. Look up the championship teams of the last ten years. They had maybe 1 bad defender TOPS in the starting lineup (e.g. Dirk and Dallas last year. Most teams had good defenders on all five spots (e.g. Pistons, Lakers ’09, ’10)

george, we know how much you dislike that ball stopping never passing small forward that used to play 4 u. But now it’s time for u to move on with the .500 team u have right now and be happy with it. It looks like kenyon martin was right about u.

george karl is like a boxer and keeps on punching carmelo anthony.
keep it up george, its funny!

Melo is averaging a career high in assists, shooting lesser shots in his career, and had 11 shots last game with 6 assists. But he’s selfish. I think even with a ring, this kid will never be liked.

George Karl is right. And when it happens, delusional fans will cry for D’Antoni’s firing when the blame should lie on the shoulders of Dolan. Book it!

Although he’s absolutely right I’m certain that these remarks are being taken out of context, but even still Karl should have known that remarks like that will be taken out of context by every media outlet in New York. I love the Knicks, am very happy about the development of Jeremy Lin, but there is no way the Knicks as presently constructed will ever pass the Bulls in seven games or less.

George Karl has to get off this victory lap. He’s thrown GP, Kemp, Ray Allen, Melo, AI, and JR under the bus. With JR, he made it known he didn’t like him to anybody who would listen. JR clashed with Byron Scott in New Orleans but they put it behind them and now golf together with CP3. Scott always said he loved JR and they clashed because he was 19 and straight out of high school. With George, JR never had a chance. There was times JR would get into a game and not no the gameplan because George wouldn’t talk to him and sometimes refused too. Instead GK would send a assistant coach to talk to JR. It was twice that JR was assured a starting role but to only show up to training camp to see that he had been lead on. Never George’s fault, always Melo’s,KMart, or JR’s, and George made sure to get to the media and let them know.

@ Jones: Ppl really underestimate the FULL contributions of Dirk during that playoff run last year…he actually played VERY good defensively. Maybe not racking up the blocks or steals, but he played very well overall in terms of pressure.

Well he would know about teams not built for postseason success.

2 worried bout wht goes on in NY will Denver even make tha playoffs

  • dfrance21

Yes the blame should lie with Dolan… for hiring D’Antoni. lol. I think they need to clean house at MSG, from management on down the line. And I don’t know why they keep asking Karl about other teams/players, but his response should have been “I’m concerned with the Nuggets getting healthy and into the playoffs.”

@allenp he has been to the finals, and conference finals. also some major fails (94,95)

Isn’t his squad barely still in the playoff fold? Oh okay. George is ridin Melos jock harder than LaLa at this point & it’s really sad to see. HE’S GONE! Stop sweating him & what he does in NY, y’all aren’t even in the same conference & won’t play each other again this year! There is ZERO reason for him to be concerned with NYK & he’s only proving Kenyon rite. Worry about fixing the struggles for your own team, stop focusing on a team you already played your one matchup against this season & get over it, the trade happened a year ago (A trade you won btw)

  • MeloMan15

Kenyon Martin was 100 percent right… Karl needs to worry about his own team now. He’s the only person close to melo to call him selfish… No other person, player, or coach that knows him personally has said that

  • anthony y

Karl is acting like a bitter ex wife in a divorce. He’s so focused on ny I wonder if he’s aware of his own teams shortcomings lately. The more he shows his obsession for melo the worse he looks. He’s a mediocre coach who has continually underachived and not for a lack of talent. Kenyon was 1000% rightabout him and I’m hoping the rest if the league is seeing it now.

  • Robin

People that says New York Knicks can’t play D are simple stupid and doesn’t follow basketball. NY are ranked top ten in D. George Karl is just jealous that Anthony is with us now. He should focus on his own team or karma will hit him.

  • Warner

George Karl as a bumbling moron who should have his job and speaking abilities permanently revoked. A: Nobody cares what you think Karl. Especially not someones opinion who hasn’t won a championship after 20+ years coaching and is arguably the worst coach in the NBA and B: Doesn’t have a team built for winning himself. Shut up George Karl, you’re officially and idiot. Signed: Nuggets fans everywhere

  • Justin G.

anthony, once again you fall in a long line of people on this site that seem to think Karl (or anyone else who says something controversial)is just coming out and saying these things. Like he’s calling a press conference or gathering the reporters around after practice and saying “Here’s what I think abou the Knicks this year”. He’s BEING ASKED QUESTIONS!!! He’s answering them. Simple as that. George just isn’t one of those that will sidestep a question or do the politically correct thing. People loved Barkley and Shaq for it and they love Popovich’s candid ways too but Karl gets vilified for it?

  • anthony y

Justin g, the difference is shaq and pop have rings to back up what they say. The fact if the matter is he has been going out of his way to try and throw him under the bus for no reason other than his bitterness over him leaving. Melo is not the first, there is a list of former players he’s attacked AFTER they left. It doesn’t matter if he’s calling press conferences or not, he’s in the middle of the season coaching the nuggets not the knicks, and as such the nuggets should be his focus. You brought up pop, well pop wouldn’t be focusing on another team other than his or who they play that night. As such he has 4 rings to show for that. Its called professionalism and Karl must have missed that class. You want to blame the reporters for asking the question, but nobody put a gun to his head and made him answer. He could have said simply that his focus is on HIS team and who’s next up. That’s what pop would have done. Once again Justin g you fall on the wrong side of the conversation trying to defend this scrub coach and his butthurt feelings.
