Jeremy Lin on Carmelo Anthony: ‘I Look Up to Him’

Ever since “Linsanity” took over the New York Knicks and the NBA, there’s been a fear by some fans and media that when Carmelo Anthony returns to the lineup, the magic will fade away. Both ‘Melo and Jeremy Lin have pooh-poohed the theory (as have most reasonable observers.) Here’s the latest, via the NY Post: “Lin, who has sparked the Knicks’ current seven-game winning streak and is the talk of the town, also credited Anthony for telling coach Mike D’Antoni to give the undrafted Harvard guard a chance. ‘I’ve been hearing reports ‘Can Jeremy coexist with ‘Melo?’ and this and that, and I’m just confused because he’s the one who vouched for me in the first place,’ Lin said on WFAN’s ‘Boomer and Carton Show’ this morning. ‘You know we want to play together, and we want to work together and we’re buying into that. Some people are calling ‘Melo selfish and [saying that] he doesn’t buy into the team, and that’s just tough for anyone to hear, especially when we don’t think it’s true.” [...] Lin went further to debunk the speculation surrounding the team’s chemistry and the potential pitfalls that may arise when Anthony returns from injuries. The All-Star forward is expected back either Friday against the Hornets or Sunday against the Mavericks. ‘The guy gives me advice all the time. I look up to him. He’s a leader on this team, a captain, we need him out there, and we’re excited to have him back,’ Lin said. ‘Melo has been saying the same thing to me too and telling me, ‘When I come back, you’ve got to be aggressive; we’re going to play off each other.’ We’re committed and we’re going to make this thing happen; we’re going to find a way to become even more explosive offensively.’”

hahahahahahahahhahahhahhahaha, i appreciate lin’s modesty but looking up to a dude who does not play defense and when they lose blames everyone but him, has probably not won seven in a row since he was in denver. this is best laugh of day!

    Well duh… Melo is 6’8″

  • DruNyce

All this BS is media driven, period. They always like try to stir up drama so they have something to talk about. Controversy sells…
The fact that Melo told ‘Antoni to give Lin a chance was already public. Yet, DramaSPN didn’t report it. Coincidence? NO.

  • Jeremy

Carmelo plays defense when he wants to, and why does everyone put such a high premium on star scorers playing D? Derrick Rose doesn’t really stand out defensively, he is a decent positional defender as well… Carmelo only got ticked because Lin hit the game winner.. when Melo comes back everyone knows who is taking that last shot.

I think the fact that Lin is so humble may allow them to co-exist and have it work.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

    @TADOne, at this rate I don’t think there is anyone he can’t co-exist with…

Just read that the Knicks are closing in on a deal with JR Smith. Not sure i’m loving that move with the chemistry we have right now…

  • Paul H

I just flicked over to ESPN.com and the first mug to greet me there wasn’t Jeremy Lin. SHOCKED.

  • Jono

Please New York, DO NOT SIGN JR! I watched the man play all these years here in Denver and he makes Carmelo look unselfish!

  • OTB

Hey SLAM, why haven’t you posted a story yet on AI being broke as dishes and squandering away 154M in earnings? Oh, and refusing to go to the D-League when the Lakers asked him to? Ahh, I forgot, he keeps it real. Makes sense. I get that you guys are “loyal” to him, but its a pretty big story. Report it.

idk why everyone is worried about Melo fitting in with Lin. Melo played with Iverson, had his best scoring season with Iverson. He will definitely be able to play with Jeremy Lin. The question is, can Lin stay in rhythm and aggressive once they add Melo, not the other way around.

“he’s the one who vouched” Melo is LINSANE too. lol

  • Jono

Melo vouched for Lin. Landry Fields couched for Lin.

  • l2ising Phoenix

Think about it, melo doesn’t have to TRY to be a point foward anymore, far less ISO’s and more dishing and swishing , the Knicks are gonna be serious when melo gets back… Haters shall hate, but trust me, melo is a humble dude and will play into his new found role very well.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

It was a magic couch. Good coaching, but better couching.

Carmelo should respond with “I also look up to Jeremy. His explained to me, using principles of differential calculus, that the basketball court is not really flat; it is actually geodesic in nature which greatly enhanced the trajectory of my bounce passes.“

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    ^^^Racist bike or not? Hmmmmm…

  • Brahsef

    Lol at Bike

Thatd be awesome if Melo would say that. The look on reporters faces would be priceless

  • Heals

Alotta NYC fans getting exposed in the last week or so. Last year they were foaming at the mouth to get Melo, now they question whether he’s compatible with Shoa-Lin and are scrutinizing his role on the team. I love it, best hoops fans my a$$…

People may have forgotten or aren’t aware of how Melo and Gerry McNamara had chemistry. Very similar type of player to Lin. You may remember the end results though. While Melo might not be considered an all around player like Bron, he is the most potent pure scorer bowing only to Durant. The Knicks will be so much more dangerous with him back. Him being somewhat hurt, which I think has been obvious all season, will in a way help them team wise. Fields and Novak will keep getting some burn. Walker has been somewhat disappointing though. This is a perfect fit for Carmelo. It’s amazing how fickle NY fans are, always need to throw some guy under the bus. Happens to be the guy who’s hurt and on the bench. Shame!!!!

@Jeremy why do people always have to try and make a point by bringing up Rose and be completely wrong most of the time. Rose is no gary payton but he was tied for the best defensive win share last season among pg’s with cp3 and was top 3 in synergy stats in regard to defending a player that’s isolated. something melo has yet to do among his position, in what 9 years?

  • G Diesel

Here is my prediction for this season: The Lakers will beat the Knicks in the NBA Finals, in 5 games.
REMEMBER that I said it first when this happens. (I know it sounds crazy).

SPORTS MEDIA: If you’re working in this field and you’re over 35 please get out. You are a child.

  • MeloMan15

When did Melo become the bad guy? seems like the comments for every post he’s tagged are all hating… No worries, respect to Lin for saying that, and when Melo comes back they shud be even better

  • Dan

  • trueballer

the knicks r fine melo just needs to play off the ball and lin city control the tempo~!

@Lakeshow, Maybe not racist but a play on Lin’s Harvard education?
Can’t be so quick to judge :D

  • ai come back

derrick rose per 100 possesions is responsible for 110 points derrick rose per 100 possesions gives up 108 points DERRICK ROSE FOR DPOY HELL YEAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

  • HRees

They’ll both need each other in the finals.

  • J1son

The Knicks will be good to go with melo and lin. If Lin avgs 8 & 8 the rest of the way it would be an upgrade from what they were doin’ cause all they needed was a 1 that was capable of handling and dishing. And eventually his skill set will get better with PRACTICE (Iverson). They’ll be dangerous, and don’t forget about Amare too

  • Towelie

Iman Shumpert plays a good role…

I actually feel sorry for Amare since Melo was acquired…poor Amare.

  • Justin G.

Good Lord Lakeshow, OF COURSE it was a play on his Harvard education? Why do people have to be so quick to start the racist BS all the time?

  • Wendy

People, educate yourself. Lin Shu-Hao is an economic major. He doesn’t know squad about differential calculus od trajectory of surfaces…

  • Jono

@Wendy shows you the quality on individuals on this forum dosen’t it

  • bike

Uh Wendy, there is a very high likelihood that Lin had a course in Differential Calculus either in college or maybe even high school. The question regarding Melo that the reporters are asking Lin is idiotic. So if Melo could dream up a follow-up response dripping with sarcasm that would mock the suggestion that Lin and him could not play well together would be entertaining.
    That is all.
