Kenyon Martin Plans to Mentor Blake Griffin

The Los Angeles Clippers’ newest addition, Kenyon Martin, says he wants to provide young Blake Griffin and frontcourt teammate DeAndrew Jordan with some much-needed guidance. (Whatever you say, K-Mart.) From the LA Times: “The smile on Kenyon Martin’s face said a lot. Martin had just joined the Clippers for practice Sunday in Orlando — he didn’t take part in the session, however — two days after he signed a contract to play for team. Both Martin and Coach Vinny Del Negro said there is no timetable for him to play in a game, but Martin said he’d like to be in uniform playing before the team finishes a six-game, 10-day trip that continues Monday night against the Orlando Magic. The Clippers won Martin’s services over the Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks. ‘The Clippers were a good makeup of a team before I got here,’ Martin said. ‘They were old and young. I’m about winning. I’m about winning basketball games. And I felt the best chance to help was here.’ Martin felt as if he could provide Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan with a veteran’s knowledge of how to be a successful big man. Martin averaged 8.6 points and 6.2 rebounds with the Denver Nuggets last season in 48 games, but he averaged 13.5 points and 7.2 rebounds over his 11-year NBA career in New Jersey and Denver. ‘With my knowledge of the game, I know I can help Blake,” Martin said. ‘I’ve been where Blake is — a whole lot of athleticism and not really knowing how to play. He’s getting it, but I think me being here, being around and talking to him and DeAndre, I think it’s going to help a lot.’”

not really knowing how to play? what a pompous d-ck. you’ve never been where blake is… dude was a 22-11 all star in his rookie year, you were a 16 and 8 goon in your prime. why don’t you learn from him?

  • Bt

Maybe teach him to play, or even attempt to play some d

  • robb

He’s gonna take them both to a tattoo parlor

  • David Moore

Blake Griffin doesn’t need a mentor. Just be the Kenyon Martin we all love. Dunk over cats and scream. That will definitely rub off on Blake…lol

The weird thing is that Blake/DeAndre (not DeAndrew…) are good level-headed kids who would actually be willing to sit down with K-Mart and listen to him. Let’s just hope they use judgement and filter out the junk. For example, advice on defensive positioning = good advice, neck tattoos = bad advice.

KMart could def teach Blake some stuff about D. If I were Blake, I’d think twice about having someone with lips tattooed on his neck give me any life advice though….

‘Make sure that if your gonna catch a technical foul, you do it in the forth quarter when the game is on the line; you wanna make the tech as costly and memorable as possible.’-Kenyon.

I actually think that he can help Blake. He has made deep Playoff runs, he plays defense and at one point K-Mart had an awfully simailar game to Blakes’.

KMart also came back from a knee surgery early in his career. The similarities are a little uncanny. Let’s just hope BG can learn what not to do too.

    the hilarity of these comments.

Well I don’t recall anyone ever trying to punk Kenyon Martin. That’s a lesson Blake may want to learn as he has to deal with salty players everytime he distributes a mid-air tea bag.

    “Hey Blake, lip-tattoos are a “MUST”…

  • ClydeSays

“Make sure you beef about coaches, management & your teammates to the press. Get a massive contract based your point guard feeding you the ball 15X a game. Rush back from injury to make sure you’re never 100% healthy & when the choice is between a bad tattoo or no tattoo, just go for MORE INK!”

Blake, if you feel the need for a mentor, look up someone like Tim Duncan. Your mom is NOT going to like hearing that you are hanging around K-Mart.

  • James Aka…

Maybe its an example thing: don’t do what Kenny Don’t does?

Kenyon Martin was a beast whose career was ruined by injuries. That being said, Blake on offense is already way ahead of the best K-Mart ever was. He could learn lots of defensive tips from K-Mart, but he really needs to talk to Amar’e, an explosive dunker who developed an 18-footer (“Lesson #1, never play with Carmelo Anthony”).

Tim Duncan is a 7’0″ cyborg. He could teach you everything he knows, and you’d still never come close to replicating him.

K-MART needs to teach BLAKE how to be a thug. LOL

Kenyon led the Nuggets team defense (especially after camby was traded to… the Clippers), and he was great defending 1-on-1. so if blake/deandre can absorb and utilize those information then the team will go very far.

I thnk Griffin and DeAndrew will learn alot from K~Mart.. He has always been a great leader.. Just because he has tattoos, doesn’t make him a bad person.. How many people have tattoos and nobody says anything about them.. You people are very stupid to even bring that up.. Basketball is his game and his DAM GOOD AT IT.. You go K~Mart, Clippers are a great fit for you..

  • TxKuntryBoy

Ken will and should give advice to Blake Griffin on defensive positioning. As to Jordan he can use some help on his inside game which primarily consist of dunks from rebounds and alley oops. Whats up with all the animosity. I grew up with Ken, played on the same high school team and graduated with him in 96, knew him before his first tatt. I missed the memo that stated if you are tatted up and don’t take any mess from anyone that you are considered a thug. As far as all the other nonsense it just goes along with the nba, you have the so called good guys who dont live the fast life and then there’s the other 85% of the nba that loves to be out and be seen, which leads to unwarranted public scrutiny, ergo the haters comments above.

Mmm, hate… So I presume that no one else watched that playoff series between Denver and LA in which Denver was clearly the better team but JR and Kenyon constantly threw close games away with their antics? Uhh-ok.
