Kevin Durant: Blake Griffin’s Epic Dunk on Perkins Was a ‘Layup’

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

There was universal agreement that Blake Griffin threw down the dunk of the season a few nights ago, a monster finish over OKC Thunder center Kendrick Perkins. Well, almost universal.

Perkins’ teammate Kevin Durant didn’t join in the League-wide celebration of the epic throw-down, gamely defending his big man by downplaying the play as merely nothing more than a layup.

From the Star-Telegram:

“I have no appreciation for it at all,” Durant said. “I really wasn’t impressed. He finished it, so what? We’ve moved on. That’s not why we lost the game … Any time you guys ask me about my teammates getting dunked on, or is crossed up or a shot is made on him, it was a bad play for me and I don’t like it,” Durant said. “I have nothing against Blake, don’t get that wrong. But it was against us, so I’ve got to stick up for my teammate.”

“I wasn’t surprised [of the attention] because Blake is a poster child,” Durant said. “He dunks the ball a lot and he makes spectacular plays. If it wasn’t against us, maybe I would have said it was a good play. But it was against us, so it was a bad play.”

Before anyone calls Kevin Durant a “hater” or any such sort of ridiculous thing, it’s important to revisit what kind of competitive edge he has. Recall during last season’s Playoffs, when Durant shot down a reporter’s silly question about being happy for Dirk Nowitzki after the Mavs eliminated OKC. He’s a competitor through and through.

It would have been strange for Kevin Durant or any of Kendrick Perkins’ other teammates to do anything but downplay the Blake Griffin dunk.

Kevin Durant got some hops to he could probably do it if he wnted he can dunk through the legs ain’t no reason he couldn’t

  • Kilo

I wouldn’t call it a lay up, but it is certianly being overrated. Chris Mullin said it was the best dunk he had ever seen last night. I wasn’t nearly that good.

  • Madterps

KD is a good leader, represent DC to the fullest…

  • J.C.

It was hilarious to see KD sprint out of the way when Blake came down for another dunk like that later in the game. ‘Not today, Blake.’

  • MLK4Life

Then he must also think that his dunk on Brendan Haywood in the WCF last season was a layup.

  • http://www.twitter.com/hurstysyd Hursty

Hook 3 fingers over the cusp of the rim and it’s a dunk. So… it was a dunk.

  • Justin G.

Durant is wrong. Just because it’s on your teammate doesn’t mean you can’t say it was a great play. Saying he had no appreciation for it or that he wasn’t really impressed is an out and out lie

  • AD

@J.C it was hilarious nobody spoke on it… but KD is saying the right thing You NEVER EVER compliment a Enemy especially the one who wants to posterize and decieve you

  • http://dsfjklf.com Jukai

    Hursty got it.

  • AT33

Hey everybody… it was an impressive play but it wasn’t a dunk. He barely touched the rim with his middle finger if at all. I remember the days in high school when i was trying to dunk the ball, it never counted then as a dunk just by barely touching the rim and it certainly doesn’t count now and especially not in the NBA.

It was not a dunk, move on.

  • http://tempdog1 Tempest

It was a fracial thrown into Perkins pride

  • http://slamonline.com. datkid

ehhh nah that was DEFINITELY a dunk lmao

  • Kobester

No matter what you said KD, we all saw what happened.

  • ibdb

where does he say that it´s not a dunk???it´s not mentioned in the linked article

  • Justin G.

AT33, when you were trying to dunk your fingers were probably barely grazing the side or underside of the rim, not coming down from above the rim. Watch the replay in slo-mo if you have to because you clearly see three of his fingers curl around the rim. It’s a dunk, move on

  • Björn Atli

Carter’s dunk on Fred Weiss in the 2000 Olympics was a layup.

  • Canesta

With gripping intensity, Blake Griffin plunged the ball through the hoop, causing a stir of intensive emotions to circulate through the stadium and society as we know it. He changed the game as we know it forever…

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com K.Holiday

Blake’s “dunk” was a very violent hook shot from above the rim right on KP’s neck lol. I personally liked the D-Wade dunk over Perkins better tho. Click my name to see that dunk and tell me if yall agree!

  • http://juan.garcia@computershare.com POW

A dunk is putting the ball through the hoop with force.

KD… keep tell’n your boy that. He’s gonna need therapy.

  • Justin

Was more like a “lay down” – ball coming from above.

  • vtrobot

OK, then. The most vicious layup in the history of basketball. C’mon now. It was a dunk.

  • Red

He threw it in, it wasn’t anything now that you think about it. Blake is annoying anyways.

  • Michelle

I love Durant but being an ultimate competitor doesnt mean that you cant have respect for your opponent. Dont give Blake a big hug before the game and act as friends and then after the game take back that respect :S

  • bike

It’s still two points, anyway you look at it
I know we all like to see that highlight stuff, but you can’t help but wonder if some of this is going to Blake’s head
He is a sensational athlete, but he runs the risk of serious injury doing that stuff. Sooner or later, some player is going to undercut or hard foul him and he will come down hard.

  • robb

you can say you aren’t amused, but no way you can say you aren’t impressed. Dunk or not (I think it was) that sh*t was spectacular, and I don’t even like Blake.

  • ripslam

Am I the only one who saw that he TOUCHED THE RIM WITH HIS FINGERS? It was NOT a throw-in like the Mozgov play, he TOUCHED THE RIM. Please step off.

  • @boweezy24

    Haha Well If It Wasn’t a Dunk, it Certainly Wasn’t A Lay-Up!!!!

  • jayrose

I respect his decision to stand up for his teammate but you gotta give props where props are due. Its all for the fun of basketball

  • add

dwight howard’s superman dunk was a lay up

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

Ripslam apparently that is not enough for some people. You need to grad the rim with all ten fingers and swing from it like Tarzan and then maybe it can be considered a dunk after further review.

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

But I was honestly amazed that not 1 Thunder player that was on the bench so much as moved a muscle when the play happened. Usually there’s that one jerk teammate that jumps up or grabs the person next to him when someone get embarrassed, but they all just sat there stoically.

KD s aight. He gotta say that. Its not about touchin the rim though . A throwdown is a dunk too. All you retards get used to it coz normal dunks are just layups for these gus this is the new dunk or ‘ Throw Down ‘. Most of yall hate it coz you cant comprehend it. KD can throwdown too but he aint made it an art like Griffles. Griff introduced the Throw Down to most of yall. This is the new $#it , you aint even DOWN , Down , down , down , down… :-)

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Like I said the other day, if it wasn’t a dunk, it was something better.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

    It was a contested Mosgov.

  • Holiday

Personally I don’t like Blake, I think he’s an arrogant Prick that can’t do much more than dunk…. But that “throw down” if that’s what its gonna be called was unreal, Perkins got Violated!!!

  • shawnkemp4prez

Pippens dunk on Ewing? that was a layup…

… it was like Kobes hotelroom reinacted on the court.

  • capostat

    lol @dfrance..

Man that’s the truth. I’m also laughing that you say “jerk teammate”… lol.. Naw man, that’s stuff is pure instant reaction, you can’t blame him–but it’s funny to see at the same time. I always recall the Vince Carter windmill off Mark Jackson’s dish. One guy on the Clipper bench could not contain himself and he just jumped from his seat, and walked down the bench. It never gets old to me. It’s like the guy had a pure basketball fan reaction which is one of the things that made it hilarious.

  • Chukaz

I’ll only say this. Jordan wouldn’t have said it was the greatest thing since sliced bread had it been done on his bulls. Kobe wouldn’t have said it was the greatest dunk ever had it been done against his Lakers. Good for you KD.

  • http://www.t-mac.com/tmac/index unf*ckwitable

KD just getting his dudes back which is ok but “we dont believe you, you need more people”

  • Fletch213

  • VC

I think Blake griffen shows off too much. yeah his “Dunk” was cool but it wasnt really a dunk. His hands didnt even touch the rim. If I went up to the hoop and trew the ball into the rim really hard would that be a dunk even if I didnt touched the rim? Dont think so. It would be a layup that I threw through the hoop really hard. But dont get me wrong I aint no BG hater.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The NUPE

Lay-Down/Dunk, doesn’t really matter, makes a great poster. Personally it’s more of a lay-down (not lay up) IMO. He lost the ball at the last second so he more so through the ball down the rim than really pushed the ball down with his hand. Doesn’t really matter if he touched the rim with fingers or not, because it’s easy to touch the rime as you follow-through the motion. Like in HS, it’s only a dunk when your hand is still on the ball as it’s going through the hoop. Just sort of throwing it in the hoop without true ‘control’ of the ball as it going through is what we considered throw downs ro lay-downs. Just my .02

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

KD is my favourite player but when ur that high up who cares if it is a dunk/ layup/ play/ throwdown it was spectacular

  • http://slam Phillip

Love the way KD stepped up to back up his comrade. It’s necessary to not lose ground. Admitting defeat doesn’t do you any good in this sense. Anyway, the best way for KD would be to shove it up the next time the two teams meet.

  • Mary

I love KD’s attitude here. And I don’t know if I’m biased because it was on Perk and I will always be a fan of his, but I’m on the side of those not seeing the hype of this dunk. It was powerful and awesome and blah blah whatever, but the Mozgov dunk still kills it, and will always kill it. Blake had poor Mozgov literally sucking his d!ck then, this time wasn’t half as embarrassing.

  • http://theprayingdurantis.wordpress.com/ Nash

I think that for anyone to say anything than what his holiness the Praying Durantis said would be borderline insincere. What response could he possibly give that would be like yeah he dunked on us and it was really awesome! I don’t think it was a dunk but it was as impressive as a dunk, and I bet if you asked Kendrick Perkins if it was a dunk or not he’d say… *sad face*
