Oscar Roberston’s Advice for Dwight Howard: ‘Keep Your Mouth Shut’

Oscar Roberston is in Orlando for All-Star Weekend, working to promote his work in the battle against prostate cancer. Inevitably, he was forced to address the Dwight Howard situation. Robertson thinks Howard should refrain from commenting on his trade status. From the Orlando Sentinel: “Oscar Robertson, NBA legend and the man who led the way so players like Dwight Howard would have the right to become free agents, has a word of advice for Dwight in this ongoing trade saga. ‘Keep your mouth shut and play basketball,’ said Robertson. ;If he wants to be traded, he’s going to be traded. Go and talk to the owners and say, ‘I want to be traded’ and keep it a secret.’ In a situation like this, he can’t win. … Anytime they (Magic) stumble and fall and every time they get beat, they’re going to blame Dwight Howard and it’s totally unfair because it’s not all his fault. I don’t think management has done a great job in keeping certain players on the team. They had a nucleus of players that got them to the Finals and then, all of the sudden, it’s gone downhill.’”

I think this advice applies to a lot of guys In the league. Simple, yet effective.

This should be an email to every player. It’s crazy that they just put their team on blast and then go play with them that night. A**holes.

the problem is, Dwight hasn’t actually said anything about being traded publicly. It’s all “he said this” “he wants this” or it comes from the Magic Organization (Otis Smith) “Dwight has requested a trade” – Never has Dwight actually talked about his trade demand to the media other than confirming it.

@nbk That may be true but he def has went on a world tour flirting with every fanbase possible. ‘Oh sure, I’d love to play in Boston!’, ‘Why yes me & DRose would make a fantastic tandem!’, ‘Me & DWill always enjoy our dinners together!’, ‘I don’t know what Noah was talking about, Id love to play in Cleveland!’, ‘The Hornets are a great establishment sign me up!’, etc.

Derrick Rose said he’d love to play with Howard. Why aren’t you complaining about that? Why is answering questions asked of you so wrong? He isn’t saying, I want to be traded to the Bulls. Over-reactive fans and media are why this is so bad. Oscar played in a time where he was dealing with horrible racism and prejudice. When he played, Kareem was able to ask to be traded, and told the team to keep it a secret, which was easily doable because there was nothing close to the media attention revolving around the city a player plays in. It has to be almost impossible for any player that played in those days to understand the level of media attention a star-player goes through when they are about to be in a contract year. It’s not like in the 60s where players could and did avoid the media as much as possible. Now players must participate in press conferences, they must at least hear the questions they are asked multiple times. If a guy wants to be traded, and word never gets out now a days, I would be completely shocked.

I hear you & that’s true times are different but nobody’s stopping him from saying ‘no comment’. It just makes it an unnecessary circus when he does answer em & is a real slap in the face to Orlando fans. Even during Carmelo’s trade saga (which was a true media circus) I never not once heard HIM say he wanted to be in New York or hell even said he wanted out. I just think shutting the eff up is a lot more respectable than blabbing about how you can see yourself here, here & there. Oh & DRose just signed a 5 year extension so he has the right to say whatever he wants, you know he ain’t going nowhere.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

when did you hear Dwight say he wanted to play somewhere else? Everything you’ve ever heard has been from someone else, never a direct quote.

    Any more questions?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Like I said, all he’s done is confirm his trade demand. – He says he would entertain offers from a team like boston, because all he wants to do is win. He never says I want to be traded to Boston. Or Chicago. Or anywhere. He just says he wants to be traded, because he wants to be on a team that is solely focused on winning. Which I see no reason to get mad at.

  • Ill Smith

It doesnt matter if he’s confirming or not point is he acknowledged it. & I just said its disrespectful to the fans, no one’s angry. Lets say this was your team’s best player, you wouldnt appreciate this talk either. If I was in his shoes Id be asking for a trade too. Hell who wants to play on a team with Ryan Anderson as the teams 2nd option? My (& The Big O’s) only point is STFU about it. If he says no comment enough times they’ll eventually stop asking as much but as long as he’s giving these candid answers the questions will keep coming in bunches.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I understand what your saying. I don’t think he should just blow off the media, that would do just as much damage. He can’t sit there and say no comment a thousand times and expect to be treated with respect when he finally does get traded. Honestly, hurting the Orlando fans is probably last on his agenda. The media are the people who can destroy his reputation, not some unhappy fans.

  • robb

    yeah Dwight shut up

  • http://www.t-mac.com/tmac/index unf*ckwitable

He doesnt have to blow off the media Nbk, all hes gotta say is “im not talking about possible trades or the upcoming free agency” and then say no comment when those questions are asked. He can still talk about games and that stuff. I know what your saying how some cats are killing Dwight and giving other dudes a pass for doin the same ish, but
in Dwights case its a bigger issue and he is being asked about it more which is why people are getting sick of it, imo no player should be taliking bout where theyd like to play while they are signed to another club.

  • Ill Smith

Good point. It’s really a lose lose situation for him its just a little sickening how these players want to switch teams so often now. In just a 2 year window we’ve seen Cleveland, Toronto, Denver, Utah, New Orleans & presumably Orlando lose their stars, all in their own unique way. I guess Dwight’s path isn’t LeBron-esque but I’d like to see someone from this generation of stars form his own path instead of following the trend.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I feel you witable. And I get why people are fed up with the Dwight saga. I just personally, don’t really blame Dwight. I blame the culture we are apart of.

  • JR smiths!!

@nbk the culture rpresents nothing but mailicious comments on obscurinity

  • shutup

NBK at it again there is documented proof he demanded a trade, documented proof he or his agent inquired about playing for other teams, but keep pedaling your lies and false information maybe you’ll get someone to believe you.

  • http://www.t-mac.com/tmac/index unf*ckwitable

@shutup, plenty of cats demand trades, its a part of the game. I could be wrong but i dont think Dwight actually said in the media “i wanna be traded” he just answered questions.

  • http://www.t-mac.com/tmac/index unf*ckwitable

@NBK yeah word on the culture, same can be said of the Linsanity hype going crazy as well, its not Lins fault its just this bullsh*t world we live in.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Yeah, I feel for the kid, he is going to get torn down at the first chance.

  • burnt_chicken

hey nbk – you had a baby? congratulations! Sunshine and smiles all around- hope everyone is safe, and well, and home.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Not yet, anyday now. But appreciate it man

  • Justin G.

What kind of damage would be done if he says “No comment” a thousand times, or does as I suggested and say he’s not talking about his contract, teams he’d like to play for, trades, or anything of that nature. First person to ask about it ends the interview. After the first couple times one idiot interviewer asks about it and he leaves, they’ll stop asking

  • Dan

lol wtf is wrong withoscar robertson these days? first the dream team comment and now this.
