Rajon Rondo to Replace Joe Johnson in All-Star Game

Due to knee tendinitis Joe Johnson won’t be able to take part in this coming weekend’s All-Star Game, so Rajon Rondo will take his place. Per the Boston Globe (and a few other Celtics-related media entities): “According to NBA source, Rajon Rondo named to replace Joe Johnson on All-Star team.”

@GwashNBAGlobe I wish I could throw a basketball at a ref and get invited to the All Star game.

  • robb

Josh Smith! Rajon’s gonna flip the ball to those refs.

  • http://sajkfldl.com Jukai

    Wow. F*cking sham. Wow.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Alright, I’m starting to believe that League’s office hates JSmoove because this sh*t doesn’t make any sense.

  • shutup

Rondo is playing better than Josh Smith so I dont see what the real issue here is. Rondo deserved it more than Joe Johnson to begin with.

  • Fresh Boiardee

Rondo! c’mon! I get that they have to replace a guard with a guard, but Jrue Holiday has been playing more consistent than Rondo has. C’mon NBA expose some deserving players, they just pick the same people over and over again…Well at least they didn’t add Lin.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

did it really have to a guard? and if they would have picked lin….

  • CCat44

Come on I think you guys have clouded vision just because the celtics have a skid going on right now. Guy is 2nd in the league in assists and just got finished going back-to-back 30+ point games, one of which was a 32-10-15 triple double. How many guards, let alone point guards, can pull that off?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    Had to be a guard.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Could have gone to Kyrie, but Rondo is the best player on the Celtics right now. IF it had to be a guard. And I still think Lowry should have made it in the West…

  • Shecky Shabazz

Did not have to be a guard. Look at last year with Kevin love and yao Ming. I don’t think Kevin was a center last year.

  • Paul H

I think this makes perfect sense, Rondo’s 15 points and 9.5 assists Is an infinitely better line than Joshs. He is even shooting for a better field goal%. And yes It had to be a guard.

  • http://www.nba.com Red

I honestly would’ve been more content if they picked Lin, wtf Rondo?!

  • theDankerNuggets

Are you guys kidding!? i think it’s an outrage Joe Johnson was picked before Rondo in the first place. And don’t tell me Lin’s 8 games make him more deserving than a true elite point guard.

  • Heals

I understand the gripes, but come Sunday when RR is throwin lobs and other assorted slick passes to set-up LBJ, DH12 and company all will be forgiven…

  • http://www.nba.com Red

Rondo doesn’t deserve it, not when he’s throwing balls & refs and has been injured and not consistently playing. It should’ve been anybody but him.

  • http://sajkfldl.com Jukai

Can someone source where the replacement has to be a guard?

  • LS

Would have preferred to see Brandon Jennings in, but the Bucks record was far better back when the reserves were picked than it is now.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I’m on the Smith wagon. Dude has been great this year. 16,10,4,2blk,1.5stls. Those are All Star numbers and the Hawks have had a decent year. Rondo dope too though.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

G-G-F-F-C has to be the starting lineup.
    .
    .
    Bench must be,
    G-G-G-F-F-F-C
    .
    .
    Rose-Wade-James-Anthony-Howard
    .
    Williams-Iguodala-Johnson(Rondo)-Deng-Bosh-Pierce-Hibbert.
    .
    Had to be a guard.

Couldn’t really find any rules on the rerserves for the all star game, but looking up the rosters this is what I’m assuming. 7 reserves, 2 guards, 2 forwards, 1 Center, 1 Pick em. The East already had 3 forwards as reserves, so with Joe Johnson going out, they had to replace him with a guard for balance.
I still think Lou Will should have gotten some consideration, his team is winning and he’s a MAJOR part of that. Hope this comment posts. lol

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

@Shabazz – Pau Gasol qualified as a PF/C – So they changed the definition of his position to C to allow Kevin Love to come in as the PF.
    .
    The bench was still,
    G-G-G-F-F-F-C

  • http://www.twitter.com dfrance21

Wow my math sucked on that but NBK are they considering AI9 or PP a guard, because the East has 4 forwards coming off the bench?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    Iguodala is a guard.

  • tomtom

Idiots, josh smith plays sf, not everything is a conspiracy. Rondo is have a great year, and this is coming from a lakers fan..

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    genius, Smith plays PF.

  • tb

I’m not sure why yall so pissed over Rondo. He is having a really good season. Kyrie Irving?? Why even mention him when you got other established guards on better teams. ROY yeah sure but not 1st year all-star.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Irving is having an All-Star caliber year. HOw many years he’s played in the league should have ZERO effect on his chances at making the team. What a “red-herring” bringing that up. It’s a cop out that basketball analysts use way way way way too often. It isn’t a relevant detail.

  • Shifty

Rondo deserves it. First I all Johnson shouldn’t of even got picked. And all the analysists and writers believe both josh and rajon got snubbed. A gaurd couldn’t play soba gaurd should replace them. Rondo is having a great year and how many guards in the east can get a triple double? Not that many. And as for lin……can’t believe people are saying he should be in the all star game. Like saying Brandon Jennings should of been in the all star game his rookie season for getting 50 or whatever the actual point total was.

  • http://www.twitter.com dfrance21

It’s all karma because JJ shouldn’t have been in there anyway. So who is replacing him in the 3 point contest? Or will be participate in that?

  • Shecky Shabazz

@ nbk I didn’t realize they slid pau to the center spot last year. Thanks for that bit of knowledge.

  • Donatello

Just to make clear. If a player gets injured while being selected to participate in the ASG, the replacement does NOT have to play the same position. I had this question a year ago and found the answer somewhere on NBA.com I think.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    no problem man, sh*ts confusing

  • BBaller

@nbk , if what you say is right. Which guard will replace D.Rose if he can’t play because of that back problem? Gary Neal to replace JJ in 3 point contest.

  • BBaller

Sorry nbk i just saw your 3:35pm comment, i guess you’d take Irving and then move D.Will to the starting line up yeah.

  • Shifty

Also I think try also tamper with Tim duncans position between center and forward. Alot of the quality forwards are playing a bit of both these days anyway such as pau gasol, Tim duncan and Kevin Garnett. Which is what the have used in the past to get people on the same position in the all star game

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

JSmoove deserves to be in the ASG regardless of position and whatever stupid rule the NBA comes up with.

  • smoove

they couldnt have put another forward people..they needed another GUARD. hence the decision they made.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Yeah probably Irving. He’s been better per minute then Jennings. And their teams have identical records.

  • http://www.nba.com/history/allstar/injury_replacements.html dfrance21

So NBK you were wrong, click my name for the official rules if you want but basically the reserves are 2 guards 2 forwards 1 center and 2 players of any position. Commisioner picks the replacement. If you look at the past replacements you’ll see that they don’t always match the position of who they’re replacing.

  • http://sajkfldl.com Jukai

Hold up… I’m not sure this adds up here…
The starting lineup has to be GG-FF-C, and the NBA decides who goes into what column…
but the reserves can be ARBITRARILY DECIDED by the coaches regardless of position (in 2009, Bosh was arbitrarily placed as a center by the coaches, despite being a forward on the ballots).
And the injury replacements do not necessarily have to start (in 2008, Kevin Garnett was injured, Rasheed Wallace replaced him but Bosh started).
So what is stopping Stern from declaring Paul Pierce a guard, adding Josh Smith, and moving Iggy or Pierce into the starting lineup?
    Answer: Nothing.
Josh Smith was robbed and Rondo did not have to be picked. Unless someone can SOURCE an NBA rule which shows that an injury replacement has to be the same ‘general’ position, I’m calling bullsh*t. Wasn’t Shaq replaced by Webber in 2002? Different positions. Shenanigans.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

oh word dfrance, thanks for finding that. My fault. I never said they had to be the same position, but I just thought, one way or another, the position requirements had to fit how I posted earlier. I just thought the league was allowed to be “flexible” with how they classify each position.

  • http://sajkfldl.com Jukai

Also DFrance with the actual rules, making my research useless.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

with that being said, Josh Smth was robbed.

  • http://sajkfldl.com Jukai

    LOL +1, nbk.

  • Kablamo

    Joe johnson SUCKS!!

  • http://moontain.org Fredd

damn the guy is out, at least put in an ATL player.
even more pertinent when Josh Smith is ( imo ) the real all star for the team this year.
