Report: Lakers Considered Allen Iverson?

According to an ESPN.com report, Los Angeles considered Allen Iverson as a candidate to alleviate their backcourt woes: “Allen Iverson, who sources indicated the Lakers had some interest in as long as he was willing to go to the NBA Developmental League for a few weeks first, is not the answer. Hes simply not a point guard. The Lakers are also said to be interested in former Toronto Raptors point guard Rafer Alston, who helped the Orlando Magic reach the NBA Finals in 2009. But who knows if that will materialize into anything?”

I think his illusions of starting are long gone now. He’s still better than alot of backups. Someone should sign him.

  • james lagaz

You damn right, they shld sign him therefore

  • Hart26

    YES!!!!!! LOL

  • upandup

ai is a basketball genius, he would be a huge upgrade for the lakers at pg, i hope it happens soon cuz i miss watching him play

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

    Do it.

  • tomtom

I love AI but it can’t work, two Philli guys who have been rivals there entire career and you want Allen to go to HIS team and be the 4th option!? Won’t happen especially with Iverson’s personality.

  • Jer Dawg

Lakers making stupid headlines with trying to sign all these stupid old, broken down point guards. Come on. Their guards. Their young guards don’t suck. But it’s hard to do anything when Kobe dominates the ball rendering the others useless. Lakers pg situation and trying to add athleticism is just sad. Ebanks should be playing more and their other guards. They would add more speed out there. Frustrated with Lakers in LA. They gonna get burned today in Toronto. They might as well tank the season. Smh.
One game optimism, the next is a choke.

  • lakernation909

Man lakers a lookin under evrery rock for that lucky troll. Its pathetic

  • Jer Dawg

And Kobe is simply sucking the life out of these other players! Bynum andGasol are inconsistent due to their irratic touches.

  • Antonio

Iverson can still contribute in any NBA team, it seems incredible that AI is not in the league, he has already said he will accept any role.

Iverson can still score 15 points and 5 assists, for sure, but I’m not the Lakers, I’d love to see Kobe and AI together, would be wonderful.

  • Red

I think Fisher will retire after this season.

  • real

kobe is the man, bynum is a great player, gasol is overated, fisher is too old, lakers need to trade gasol and fisher for a decent point guard and josh mcroberts can play pf!

  • OTB

AI has to be the first former MVP ever to be required to be sent down to the D-League before being able to be on a team. That’s hilarious, and really sad.

  • Yesse

Well, i’m glad they are atleast doing some scouting out there. I thought the Lakers front office didn’t care a thing about doing something with their roster.

  • Zabbah

iverson and kobe, please make it happen

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

he is done , he is getting offers from venezuela and puerto rico. and he wouldn’t help them on d one bit, matador city

  • Paul H

AI Is done and he only has himself to blame.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=542782613 The White Steve Smith

Please dont do it A.I. I would hate to have to buy a lakers jersey

  • ChipS

They need every bit of help. IMO, its worth a look. Will it work, IDK.

  • shutup

Laker fans are funny, now Gasol is overrated? was he overrated when he helped but the Lakers back in contention? smh.

  • http://www.slamonline.com aman from arkansas

WTF!!! The Lakers suppose to be getting younger not older with AI and Arenas.

  • dem

On the plus side AI is the best athlete the league has ever seen. He’s lost a step but he never suffered any serious injuries. If Nash and Kidd can handle starters minutes at 38 and 39 then AI can be a backup at age 36.

  • str8 from samoa

AI has still got it. hope he has learned from his mistakes

  • http://slamonline.com Stephen Gram

Is this a joke? Maybe they can talk Ron Harper into coming out of retirement?

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Anybody who think the Lakers can with with Bynum and Gasol are dumbies. Kobe is shooting alot, because he has too. Bynum and Gasol are inconsistent, get pushed off the blocks, don”t go up strong and Lakers won one ring without Bynum, Gasol soft play gave a Finals away and Gasol and Bynum helped in last title. Marc Gasol is a better player than Pau and Bynum is overrated its sad. There is a reason Magic will not trade Howard straight up. We need a point guard, Ramon Sessions, Ray Felton, Mo Williams or someone that can shoot and pass. BOoK IT!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

SO what if Iverson is not a PG, the lakers need perimeter shooting or scoring to relieve pressure off of kobe having to do all the work on the perimeter. If this was 5 years ago, kobe could do it easily on a nightly basis but now, some nights its just not there. This allows teams to focus on bynum and gasol more, so they become less effective because you got kobe jacking shots and the other perimeter guys missing wide open shots.

  • MikeC.

Am I crazy, or doesn’t AI have arthritis in his knee(s)? That kinda thing doesn’t get better with age. Dude is 36, small and had several chronic injuries while he was in his prime and post-prime. Fans need to accept the mortality of their heroes and realize that AI isn’t an NBA-quality player any more. It was sad for me to see Ewing chasing rings years after he should have retired. Unless a player is being groomed to move into a coaching position, hanging on year after sad, slow year diminishes their legacy.

  • 23

Iverson was constantly playing with injuries, he never wanted to sit out any games which has come back to haunt him physically. He claims to have never stretched before games. He didn’t take care of his body in his younger days. Plus he played with a reckless abandon. Nash and kidd are still contributing major minutes at a high level because they would never drive and take body contact. They were more cautious and sneaky. Iverson was a warrior but that type of mentality caused his body to break down. Much like dwade, and possibly drose. But drose is a lot bigger and stronger than ai so maybe he won’t suffer the same fate. Ai always looked real skinny and frail to me, considering his playing style.

  • CyberCosmiX

    The Seed +1.

Sessions, Felton or Williams would be perfect for the Lakers. A Lowry, a Rondo, a D-Will. True point guards, not AI – who isn’t even a point, he’s a 2. AI struggled with the Grizzlies, the Sixers and it’s been over a year since then. This is really scraping the bottom of the barrel, what next, bring in Starbury? Ridiculous.

Just play Morris some minutes instead and wait for the offseason, that will give him some experience. Or make a trade for a real point guard, whatever but not AI.

  • The Truth

Get Rafer in the mix, he’ll be great for the Lakers Show Time!

  • Athanasia Columbus

AI and Kobe its worth a shot!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

This could actually work! The guy can still create a shot, he averaged 14 and 5 in his last stint and Philly and he was banged up and in retirement shape…. He’s been putting in work in Atlanta and he could go off scoring 15 a night off the bench, watch Iverson in the All-Star games setting people up …. I can see him hitting wide open jumpers on the wing, getting to the line , getting and the lane and kicking out or throwing lobs to Gasol and Bynum, people who think AI is going to start jacking up his own shots is stupid… He wasn’t happy coming off the bench when it was Rodney Stuckey, Rip Hamilton, MIKE CONLEY!? infront of him… dudes a legend and actively in the league only a couple guys in the league have a better career than him if your going to ask a humbled Allen Iverson on his last chance to defer to Kobe he will do it, no question about it the guy is not screwing things up in LA and not pissing Kobe off. Get it done.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I think alot of people didn’t read the story.. It clearly states that it WILL NOT HAPPEN.. It was a thought, that quickly passed.

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

Man, these laker fans doesn’t really appreciate what Paul Gasol gave to their franchise. Do you all think that the Lakers can make the Finals if they didn’t trade for him??

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

Let me continue, he destroyed Dwight when they met in the Finals then. The following year he got his revenge against KG by bullying/ouplaying him. The next season they were swept by the Mavs and right now he’s playing inconsistently because he’s playing on a ridiculous offensive set. Free Gasol!! Let’s see what these Lakers are made of when he’s gone.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Who is Paul Gasol?? Is he Pau and Marc’s shorter, little known brother?

  • bdogg

first off kobe has to bail this team out way too many times against cellar teams. i dont want agent zero or ai..if la does a trade either get lowry or more realistic johnny flynn as a stop gap…i would go after brandon jennings who wants out of fear the dear and bring the kid home!

  • ralf

gilbert arenas was top candidate,, let give him a change to prove himself that his belong to this game.. what is past must forgot.. i think he learned his leason..

  • pzl

If the theme is point guards that lit them up during the Shaq era, they should sign Troy Hudson

  • ralf

pau is the great power forward of lakers.. i dunno what happen when he traded lakers has mistake trading odom i think odom is fit for lakers system.. lakers must see the other side of thier line up.. why keeping luke walton, recieving big bucks while he can’t contribute.. d-fish will be retired as lakers, lakers need pure PG,, and create reliable second unit that can fix the hole..

  • ralf

to the kobe haters.. keep ur mouth shut ok he prove himself as one of the greatest.. he can only have couple of yrs to play..

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

@BossTerry..the first time Slam did an editorial about him, they mentioned Paul. Call him whatever you like, you KNOW who I’m talking about.

  • http://www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?url=pawtucketymca Gametimeweezy

    C’mon Lakers pick him up!

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

    Very well.. :D

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85Bl3GRdULQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player 1982

I really really want this to happen, but as an AI fan Not an LA fan. If I were an LA fan, I’d probably be praying that it wasn’t true.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jay

Co-sign 1982….. really hope AI gets on a squad I don’t care if it’s going to help LA or not watching AI in purple in gold finishing his career playing meaningful basketball and having a shot at a title would be nice.

  • toto

Allen is Back. Thanks God, I only want to see him in NBA, nothing else. A.I. The Best Forever!!!

  • Kenn

I agree…. A.I to the lakers… I think that he can be the starting pg, he is so underrated in terms of passing… And he can still score a bunch….

  • Kenn

In my opinion they should keep Bynum, Gasol, Goudelocke, McRoberts
They should look to trade Walton, Blake, MWP or Barnes if they trade Peace they should keep Barnes or vice versa
It’s okay if they pick up arenas or Iverson as long as they won’t have a bad effect on the team
For my suggested trades I think the should get Williams or Beasley from the wolves or look for a good pg like sessions and other names… This is only a wishful thinking….

  • Mo

Someone sign AI if only to take him (and us) out of limbo. If he plays well then it’s a shame he had to stay in purgatory for so long. If he’s awful then at least fans (and hopefully himself) can move on.

  • DerekG

Jeremy Lin rips them for 38 on Friday then Calderon torches them for 30 last night! Anybody else think they need some defense at the pg spot? AI ain’t the answer in this case! Let Goudelock play! He’s stronger than Blake, quicker and shoots better than Fisher and Blake! If you wanna keep Fisher for sentimental reasons then fine but he needs to retire NOW! Don’t wait for the end of the season to get exposed in the playoffs! Use the amnesty clause on Metta World Piss or ship him out with Blake and Murphy and see if you can get more than 2 cheerleaders and a hot dog vendor!

  • DreDay

I Love AI!! But homie is done!!

  • EJ

Paul Gasol is a Jimmy Kimmel staffer.

  • Bj

AI is still the truth. I understand what everybody is saying about him being washed up after playing how he did with the nuggets and Memphis but honestly I believe that he was trying to fit in there and not how he was in Philly. When he was with Denver and Memphis yu can tell he was. He actually had a good team so why not try to fit in and play as a team. And him coming off the bench is probably a problem for because hes use to starting every game and of course he wants a ring before he retires. He’s determined to win a ring so of course he’s going to be acting the way he does. He wants a name for himself and to not be compared to Jordan, magic and bird. I guarantee that if he came back to the league and they let him play his game he would still be the same AI but hI’m being determined for a ring I think LA could be a good fit. Him and Kobe would do damage. They both are still bigg threats no matter the age. Then Bynum in the paint?? He’s still better then a lot of the starters In the league too. He would bring more space for Kobe and Bynum and mcrobert if they get rid of gasol which they should. I hope he Proves ppl wrong lol. He’s stil the truth and who can stop him or LA if he does go?? nobody lol

  • KidViscious

what happened to no practice AI?

  • anynomous

@kidvis.. that horse has beaten to death. only an uneducated, misinformed person would actually believe that Iverson didn`t practice on his game. let it go.

  • anynomous

    “has been beaten”

  • da reel

Fisher retired 5 years ago. he does nothin but pass the ball to Kobe.
