Shaquille O’Neal on the Boston Celtics: ‘They Miss Me’

Even though he never really was a factor for the Boston Celtics during a 37-game misadventure in his last NBA season, Shaquille O’Neal claims that the team misses his presence in the paint. From the Boston Herald: “Shaquille O’Neal didn’t exactly deliver a ringing endorsement for his last NBA employer. He clearly doesn’t see the Celtics [team stats] in the same class with the Eastern Conference elite. And he acknowledged that his injury-encouraged departure from playing has helped drive the Celts deeper into an inside power outage that has them among the worst rebounding teams in the league. ‘It’s a different team,’ said O’Neal. ‘They miss me. They miss Kendrick Perkins. It’s a different team. Hopefully guys like Brandon (Bass) will step up and give Kevin (Garnett) some relief.’ As for the Celtics prospects going forth this season, O’Neal was tepid at best, while pretty much drawing a line in the sand on their upside. ‘The good thing about their team is they’re not in a situation where they’re trying to get homecourt advantage throughout (the playoffs) and all that stuff,’ he said. ‘You know, (coach) Doc (Rivers) made a good point the other day that they don’t want to be in the eighth spot and face Miami. But if they can get to the fifth or sixth spot and play somebody that have a shot against, maybe they can make some noise. Who knows?’ When asked flatly how far be believes the Celtics can go this year, Shaq said, ‘I think they can move up.’ Tepid may be pushing it.”

well, it’s true. he was big the first half of last season.

Yeah they miss him. That’s why they signed him to a 2 year deal. They won’t miss him next year though, because they are going to offer Dwight Howard KG money, and have as good a chance as anyone else to land him. Don’t say it can’t happen either, because he has already stated he admires the C’s commitment to professionalism and likes Doc Rivers as well. So, you can possibly see a line up on Pierce, Bass and Dwight Howard with Rondo and either Ray Allen or Jeff Green at SG. If they don’t land Howard… they will get someone to fill the middle with that KG $

Both he and barkley need to shut the eff up. You had your time, go away. Let the guys playing have the light.

  • DerekG

Preach GanjahLuv! Dude played a handful of games for Boston but is claiming they miss him! LMAO!!! Shut up Shaq! PLEASE!!!

    lol & smh

  • RyanR

Did Shaq play on the Celtics? Funny, he’s listed on the 2010-11 roster yet I don’t recall him playing.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

To clarify, Shaq was talking about the Celtics medical staff. They are bored.

  • Heals

Technically yes, BUT when needed most where was he last year? For all the negative pub Sheed got his year he was there starting Gm7. Yeah ClarkK they also miss TAllen, DWest, JGreen, Perkins, Thibbs, JJohnson, ChaunceyB, young legs, etc. Shaq the most overhyped FA signing, dude has been subpar on TNT at best…

  • jinolin

He needs to be taken out side (behind the TNT building)and put out of his misery… after that they can line up Kenny Smith and Reggie.

  • Bill

Shaq , You were a joke when you were on the Celtics and even a bigger joke as a sports analyst. Actually I believe you spent most of your time getting photo ops! You knew when you signed that contract with the Celtics that you were done.

  • Zabbah

Shaq’s coming out of retirement this off season. Think about it, dude gets a season ending injury plus a lockout, he’s thinking I’m gonna chill for a year. Also, he didn’t say anything bad about Doc Rivers, in fact, claiming him to be the best coach in the L right now, so he’s keeping doors open. Book it, I called it here, Shaq’s coming out of retirement.

  • Don

Id rather see d Williams in Celtic green n white over the baby superman (shaq is the original superman). As for offering Howard kg money dont bet on it yet…. U r rite Howard did say he admires the Celtics n is a fan of the doc but he has stated that new jersey is his top choice…. N if jay- z has ne say in how the team looks when they relocate to the Bronx all he has to do is reach in his pocket n pull out some money

  • bike

Yeah, I am sure that the Celtics are missing an aging lardass with a Texas-size mouth and ego.

  • tk

surely he has enough money to buy another planet. i wish he would start packing!!

  • toinefan88

give us mia. they barely beat us last year. they not that nice.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

shaq is actually right here… they need someone to bang in the paint. He kinda sucked for them though, and he was always injured.

Shaq on Inside the NBA is perhaps the most tragic thing to have happened to the game of Bball. TNT shouldn’t have hired that oaf. Save that ish for ESPN.

  • http://www.slamonline.com the_unknown

Shaq is thinking too highly of himself.

  • LA Huey

“give us mia. they barely beat us last year” Hilarious but not surprising coming from someone who decided to be “toinefan88″

  • Heals

“I take so many 3′s because there aren’t any 4′s” and “The Shimmy” are indelable contributions to the game Huey…

  • MikeC.

I think what Shaq meant to say was: “I tricked the Celtics into thinking I was healthy and they went all-in for another ring and traded Perk for SF/PF depth and then I got hurt and Perk was gone and then Jeff Green’s heart got hurt and now the Celtics suck.”

  • MikeC.

@Heals – I’ve incorporated the shimmy into my on-court repertoire. I only bust it out after hitting a meaningless 3 when I’m shooting like crap and my team is down big. I reserve “The Big L” for meaningful shots.

  • robb

    I miss Cwebb and Payton

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

Cwebb and payton were by far the best. No question

  • Yesse

They should have never traded Perkins. Counting on an old man to carry out the rest of the season as a starting center was stupid.

  • Justin G.

It’s amusing that so many people on this site couldn’t wait for Shaq to become a commentator and now that he’s basically “being Shaq” y’all don’t like it

  • vtrobot

Yeah, you’re sorely missed because no one else on the team is willing to go pose as a giant human statue in Harvard Square. I believe that was the highlight of Shaq’s final season.
