Deron Williams Confirms He’ll Become a Free Agent

Deron Williams made it clear that just because Dwight Howard opted-in with Orlando, doesn’t mean he’ll do the same with the Nets. Per the NY Daily News: “Deron Williams is a family man with four kids and a desire for stability in his life, not another year of uncertainty with his contract. So Williams will not follow Dwight Howard’s lead into 2013 free agency by waiving his ETO. Instead, as expected, he will become a free agent this summer and explore his options. ;I’m not going to opt-in. It’s not monkey-see, monkey-do,’ Williams said. ‘Wherever I go is hopefully where I’m going to retire.’ Williams can sign a five-year deal with the Nets or a four-year deal elsewhere, earning about $30 million more over the life of the contract by playing in Brooklyn. Of course, his hometown Dallas Mavericks will be in position to make a run at Williams during free agency. [...] ‘I’m not (going through the same things) because I’ve said all year I’m going to play this whole year out and see what happens,’ Williams said. ‘So I haven’t been flip-flopping and gone back-and-forth. It’s not even close to being the same situation.’”

Dwight’s plan is slowly coming together. He’s gonna stay so he doesn’t look like a villain and make people join him. Can’t say I disapprove.

I’ve always loved Deron Williams’ attitude. He’s not part of that “Lebron camp” where decisions are based on who your friends and who to team up with; he does what he feels is best for him (hence, “its not monkey see, monkey do”). I expect him to go to Dallas.

  • OTB

Its also why he bucked the trend and went to Turkey when everyone said he shouldn’t.

  • abaci

Yeah he will probably go to Dallas

  • salty

Being a Utah fan and watching D Will leave was like when you have a hot girl who leaves you. You want to say that you don’t want her back, but d***it you do.

  • Mas

They should have traded him. Bad move King. Next Year:
No Deron, no Wallace, no Draft picks, No Lopez (probably), no Howard, no other big name free agents, nothing. Most imortantly NO NEWARK! Get the FCUK Out of HERE!

  • http://nba.com GP23

Yeah, either the Mavs or the Lakers will get him.

  • AD

he said he will be a free agent in the begining of the season… him and dwight will team up in bk, did you not hear stephen a smith ?

I guess we’ll have to take down all the mid-town billboards that have made Deron out to be the face of the franchise. I hope we still have those Jay-Z concert flyers somewhere safe. (Barf).

  • http://thesportzbroz.com Adam Maher

At least he set the franchise record for most points in a game and helped bring to an end that ridiculous Lin saga.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

AD how can you not hear Stephen A Smith?

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

AND they traded their pick away to Portland. Wow, just wow.

  • jake

Nets never should have traded for D.Williams. he is a great player but is he really improving the team that much? Now he is probably gone next year. Better luck in Brooklyn. Fire avery Johnson too.

  • Paul H

That’s how a strong minded, professional handles his business.

  • AD

jake u must prove your point……..

  • ab40

blowout sale in portland. So Aldridge and Williams next season in Dallas.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Unless the Brooklyn Nets win the first pick in the NBA draft they’re going to SUUUUUUUCK something horrible…

  • AD

if the draft is supposedly so deep, then why worry about the first round pick?

  • BoWeezy24

Hes Is Going to The Knicks…. jk

  • ash

@ OTB if lebron was following what his friends and family tell them, he would of stayed in Cleveland. Its been reported ppl in his camp told him to stay.

  • startown

Nets had to be sick when they heard Dwight was staying, now they will probably lose their best player

  • anonymous

Orlando needs to trade away players like nelson, jrich, turk, and big baby this summer to clear up cap space so they can sign dwill and bring in better players. not only dwill but players like ariza and varejao should also be on orlando`s radar this offseason via trade or free agency.

D-Will to the Knicks and Lin to the Nets. They’ll be the BrookLin Nets

This is what happens when you let Billy King manage your team. He took over when the Nets were the worst team in the NBA, and somehow managed to destroy their future.

  • RunNGun

To the Knicks… make it happen, Walsh!

I knew I was going to see you up in here, RunNGun.

  • RunNGun

That’s ‘cuz everyone wants to play for the Knicks. Look at every rumor and tell me you don’t see them linked to the Knicks. LOL

  • MirChilly

I like Deron but he doesn’t scream franchise player. Good player, but not franchise guy. I hope he is smart and signs with LA and not Dallas, cause building around him will not win you a title

  • OTB

I don’t think the Lakers can afford him with Kobe/Pau/Bynum around.

  • djb

@MirChilly dwill is not a franchise player. He needs a dhoward type presence in the middle and dhoward needs dwill in orlando this summer since he isn`t leaving for free agency. Even if orlando could somehow land dwill, they would still need a 3rd component in order to compete with miami & chicago.

It’s crazy how the “Indecision” of Dwight Howard sabotaged the future of a franchise. The face of the Brooklyn Nets Brook Lopez!!!!????

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

so if deron is not a franchise player, who and what is?

  • Brahsef

Lol Deron is a franchise type player. He just can’t be the number 1 option on a championship team.

  • anonymous

@albie The type of player who not only wants the responsibility but is capable of handling the responsibility of being a franchise player on and off the court. I think dwill is capable of handling the responsibility but I don`t think he wants it. At times, being a franchise player means having to carry your team throughout the regular season due to a lack of talent and/or untimely injuries. Based on dwill`s play last season and this season for nj it doesn`t seem like he wants that responsibility. It seems as though he wants and needs more talent around him to relieve some of this responsibility. And there`s nothing wrong with that.

  • Ldub

Dallas (even his home town) wouldnt be the best option. Dirk is on his way out in 2 years?
Brooklyn, obviously isnt going anywhere anytime soon. New stadium/uniforms or not.
LA Lakers, If they could afford him would be a good fit as well. Good sized PG, with Kobe, Bynum and Gasol. That would be beast.
Orlando, IMO, would be the best place. Could finish anywhere between 3-5 any season. Get the playoff run with DH.

  • Rainman

this team dealt their pick to Portland too…no way they get a tio 3, so basically its guranteed to be in Portlands pocket.

  • Rainman

  • abaci

i don’t think he would work out in LA. I think he and Kobe would clash. lets not forget he still has Jerry Sloan’s corpse tied to him.

  • anonymous

deron will be a free agent this summer, and the lakers cannot afford him. why dont people get that? kobe is making 30 mil. gasol is making 17 mil.
they don`t have enough money to add dwill to the team unless they restructure one (or both) of these contracts or amnesty one of these players. get over it.

  • Taylor

He’s going to Dalls. Dirks got a couple years left in the tank (as his game really isnt based on athleticism, only reason he’s lasted this far) and 20 mil + comes of the books when his contract ends in two years. They can just reload

  • blake

@taylor I don’t think the mavs are gonna look for a pg until kidd’s gone. It would be the right move but thats not the direction they’re heading right now. I think he’ll end up with the bucks. They just got Monta and a player like dwill would give them a push to really compete next year.

  • Slamm

I think if the Knicks finish strong that it will leave a good impression for free agents. Williams would fit good there. Him and and two/three more role players will make them dangerous. Some one to back Stat is needed

  • Holiday

I’d love to see him back with the Jazz… With Favors, Kanter, Burks, and Hayward there gonna be sick but DWill returning is just a dream!!!

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I used to take DWILL over CP3 every 3 out of 4 times…. This past season surely has seen a drop in his stock hasn’t it? Sure that reputation is there, but I put him in the same category as Melo. A star but you can’t guarantee he’s going to make your team better instantly.

    Dwill coming to philly
