UPDATE: Dwight Howard to Stay in Orlando for Another Season

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

*** UPDATE ***

Our long, international nightmare is now officially, mercifully over: Dwight Howard will be a member of the Orlando Magic for at least another season.

Per the Orlando Sentinel and ESPN:

Dwight Howard has waived the early termination option in his current contract and will remain with the Orlando Magic for the 2012-13 season, his manager told the Orlando Sentinel on Thursday. “He is giving up all of his leverage and his free agency in a show of commitment to his team and most importantly the fans of Orlando,” said Kevin Samples, Howard’s manager. The Magic have insisted on receiving paperwork that would eliminate the clause in Howard’s contract that would enable him to end his contract a year early and become a free agent in July.

Dwight Howard just texted me that he has signed the waiver of his Early Termination Option.

Great day for the Orlando Magic and their fans.

Unfortunately, though, we’ll probably have to do this all over again when Dwight Howard becomes a free agent in the summer of 2013.

Dwight Howard is a confused young man.

With only a few hours remaining until the 3pm NBA Trade Deadline, the 26-year old superstar center is on the verge of making the biggest decision of his basketball career.

And it doesn’t sound like he’s entirely sure what he will ulimately do just yet.

After telling his Orlando Magic teammates that he’ll “opt-in” and stick around for at least another season yesterday, Dwight Howard seemingly had a chat with his agent and changed his mind, informing team management just prior to last night’s game in San Antonio that he was still planning on opting out and becoming an unrestricted free agent this summer.

With reports swirling that that Orlando was now aggressively moving to trade him by this afternoon, Howard appeared to have yet another change of heart late last night, and told Real GM that he plans on staying with the Magic for at least another season:

“Man, listen, you know my heart, my soul and everything I have is in Orlando,” Howard said. “I just can’t leave it behind.” [...] “I have gotten some bad advice,” Howard said. “I apologize for this circus I have caused to the fans of our city. They didn’t deserve none of this. I’m sorry from the bottom of my heart. I will do whatever I can to make this right and do what I was put in Orlando to do.”

“This has been a very hard time,” Howard said. “For me, my family and all of us. The fans deserve a better hero and I will make that happen. I love and appreciate my fans and this city.” Howard said that he plans on signing the ETO waiver first thing on Thursday morning. He also plans on making some internal changes to ensure this situation isn’t repeated in the future.

Holy indecision, Batman!

Of course, as the Orlando Magic very well know, this is all just talk until Dwight Howard (along with his agent Dan Fegan, who may now find himself in some hot water) actually signs on the dotted line, making his decision final.

This insane saga is far from over. Stay tuned, as always …

so if he stays this basically means a whole nother year of this BS

  • FnF

This reminds me 2 girls 1 cup. You know you should turn away, it doesn’t provide any meaningful value to you. However, you want to stay tuned just to see how twisted it can really get.

  • Riggs

im laughing because all of these things are reports with no definite sources. Yet the backlash on dwight is hilarious.

  • Justin G.

Sign the damn papers then if you really mean it. Have Otis or whomever fax it to you wherever you are, sign it, send it back and end this nonstop crap already

  • J.C.

    I can’t do this for another year…

  • Justin G.

So “Howard told Real GM that he plans on staying in Orlando for at least another season” is not a source?

  • L Dribble

(In)Decision 2012. I’m assuming adidas stepped in to provide some PR assistance to Dwight.

What a childish fool. I feel sorry for Nets fans.

  • ratguts

deadline at 3? still plenty of time to change your mind a few more times.

  • Sizzle

    He ain’t signing sh&^ hahahahaha

  • ClydeSays

Dwight is making Lebron & Melo look good at this point. If you’re Orlando, you HAVE to trade him. He won’t contractually commit to another year & every team in the League with cap space is going to go at him this summer. Trade him for a big, an expiring contract & picks in this draft & walk away happy.

  • http://theillustrationboard.tumblr.com/ Stepfan

They still going to trade him.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Is he blaming his agent? This dude is weakminded. Say what you want about Bron or Melo but at least when they made a decision, they stuck with that joint. Bosh and Wade too. This dude is constantly trying to please other people and seems to lack a freaking backbone. No wonder he got caught up with that hoodrat. He was easy pickings.

  • el_larsen

    dwight is getting ridiculous

  • Oh Nose

    dude is a clown

  • http://www.slamonline.com TADOne

    I seriously don’t give a f*ck anymore.

  • El_Black_Mamba

Dude is following in lebrons footsteps, may be even more hated
    Than lbj

  • Heals

    I’d take 10 “decisons” over this “paint-drying” saga…

  • http://slamonline Jimbo

Is he using a magic eight ball or something?

  • Paul H

Dwight please do us all a favour and shut the f*ck up. All this compulsive attention seeking is nauseating. It might be an indication that he Is In the right place tho…this Is Disney Princess stuff. Mind boggling. And I actually liked Dwight before all this.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Seriously, who even cares anymore?

  • Otis

Can this please just be over?

  • DerekG

3pm can’t get here fast enough!!

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

I better never hear another good@mn word about the motherf*cking decision after this bullsh*t. seriously I know everybody still hates lebron but after all this I don’t see a reason why they shouldn’t hate melo and dwight more. seriously.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

After momma said he should stay…. I knew he’d stay.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Dwight Howard, my respect for you has diminished to minuscule levels. You give a wish-list of teams to be traded to and neglect your on-court production for the first 2 months, expecting to get traded. Then, you say that you’ll become a free agent so the Magic should look for trades. Well, one almost happened to a team you didn’t want to go to, then you say you’ll stay with the team through 2013. Then you don’t sign the paperwork to do so and say you will probably leave through free agency. Now you offer more false hope. You’ve combined the worst parts of the LeBron and Melo saga. Just get out of Orlando if you want out so bad. You aren’t going to win a ring this year anywhere else. Not that you care.

  • abaci

“The decision” was way worse. Lebron made a spectacle out of sticking it to his hometown team on t.v. (Akron is close enough for me). Dwight is an indecisive idiot who is clearly mismanaged. The decision is worse

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY

Magic should trade em anyway! Do you really wanna go through this again next year Otis??? Do you?

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

He won’t, but if I were Otis Smith, I’d handle this Godfather II style.
Pretend like sh*t’s all good, then wait until the summer, have one of your goons out there on the lake chillin’ with Dwight, fishing and sh*t…..and then….BANG!
“You been traded to the Bobcats, sucka!”

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

  • T-Money

so… we’ll be doing this all over again next year?

  • robb

I swear I’m gonna go to Orlando and kick his mouth if he complains about the Magic organization, his coach or the system one single time.

  • Otis

Urgghhhhhh that means we get another whole year of this. I kinda hope the Magic trade him now anyway. They’re still not winning the championship with that roster

  • T-Money

i think dwight got scared that a team like houston or gstate was going to rent him for 20 or so games. a superstar of his magnitude can’t start bouncing around like that. it’s pretty obvious he didn’t think things through when he publicly asked for a trade in training camp. btw, i love how he says that he’s glad it’s finally over and that everyone fought trough it… like you’re not the one at the centre of all this!

  • T-Money

nate jones (jonesonthenba) is dropping gems on his twitter. basically, dwight’s trade request was never about what dwight wanted but what his clan and agent were telling him. he waived the ETO without consulting his clan and without his agent’s signature. that does make his a sucka tho lol, damn man stand on your own 2! we can say a lot of things about melo and bron but NY and Miami is what THEY wanted. especially bron, rich wanted cleveland, wes wanted chicago and nike wanted new york.

  • Rainman

Look, i’ve been one of the biggest Dwight critics this season(even went as far as to say he was the 2nd biggest b**ch in the L this season, behind only Melo), but y’all are tripping. Read what he’s saying, he’s saying that he’s gotten some bad inside advice (his agent) and that he’s gonna get rid of the bad influence, and that he’s really sorry and regrets what he’s put everyone through. He’s also agreed to come bak another season to try and finish unfinished business off. Relax, damn.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

The magic should trade this clown to the Siberia Gulags.

  • RunNGun

He signs the waiver but will disappear by next season. Enough with the drama.

  • T-Money

oh, VERY IMPORTANT DETAIL: dwight gets playoffs bonus from adidas. he would have missed on that if traded to nj.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Man, his agent works for him. He is a grown man.
Look at Dwight’s history, and this whole situation makes a lot of sense. This boy has been trying to play a role for a long, long time. The fact that he impregnated that crazy chick was not an aberration.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

If Dwight fires his agent (soon), then I’ll pardon a good amount of what he’s done. However, if he doesn’t, we can just add his press conference to his ever-growing mound of lies. I figure I should still preface this as a Magic fan here:
I will always root for Orlando to win. Dwight is on Orlando. I also liked Dwight independent of Orlando. I still do (though much diminished). Dwight + Magic means I still support Dwight like I always have. Once he leaves, I’ll still like him as a player, but not nearly at the level I do now.

  • Magic fan

It’s his agent trying to get him to leave. Under his current contract his agent isn’t making a dime, but if he were to leave and get new contract then blind vying for his agent. I think that was his ” bad advice” he was receiving

  • Magic fan

    Bling bling

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    T-money you on twitter fam?

  • MikeC.

How does he decide what to eat for breakfast? Good thing work supplies him with a uniform or he’d wander around naked all the time because he can’t decide what to wear. Just decide a decision!

  • MikeC.

I’m sure all teams go through stuff similar to this with their stars from time to time. It seems to me like Dwight is a little naive about how the media can control his image if he doesn’t have people helping him craft his own spin on things. If that’s the case, he needs to play in the smallest market possible where the media will love him. Stay away from Brooklyn. That NY media will ruin your life.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

    “….The fans deserve a better hero…” Really??

  • Waggle

    LOL @ MikeC

  • T-Money

nbk – i’m not on twitter. i just use it as a newsfeed, mainly through hoopshype twitter pages. / Dwyane Wade ‏ @DwyaneWade Loyalty hahahahaha
    daaaaaaaamn shots fired.

    I feel you

  • http://www.nesn.com/2012/02/kobe-bryant-says-hes-better-than-michael-jordan-second-to-wilt-chamberlain-as-best-nba-player-ever-v.html shutup

AllenP goin off, cant believe he’s gonna use his agent as a scapegoat. I hope his future is filled with hundreds of double doubles and no rings to show for it. Anyone wanna throw out more conspiracy theories? like how he’s being misrepresented or we should give him the benefit of the doubt. @magic fan, you have no clue what your talking about, his agent gets a cut regardless, new contract, extension he is still gonna get his. believe that.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

    Conspiracy theory!
The League wanted Dwight to leave Orlando (for marketing purposes) so they put an exceedingly tough part of Orlando’s schedule (Indiana, Chicago, Miami, San Antonio) right at the trade deadline. In this way, the Magic would lose a good amount, force Dwight to demand a trade at the deadline, and put him on the Nets or Lakers. However, Orlando went 3-1, and Dwight decided to stay. Thoughts? (This is for fun, btw)

  • http://www.t-mac.com/tmac/index unf*ckwitable

Nooooo another year of this crap.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

This is probably the single most ridiculous article I’ve seen since Charlie Rosen left Fox News: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/ian_thomsen/03/15/dwight.howard/index.html?sct=nba_t11_a0

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

^That article makes Skip Bayless look unbiased. .

  • vtrobot

Move over Heat, there’s a new most hated team in the league. Dwight, you’re seriously like a child.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Please don’t hate the Magic! :)

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Howard will regret not going to LA, with Kobe for the rest of his career. Now he will never win anything trying to be loyal. Howard is dumb as bricks and if he wants to be in a Nets uniform so bad, he push for the trade and sign extension. He will not win anything in his career. If Lakers get Howard with Sessions at point, we in NBA Finals, with Howard defense. Bynum is up and coming but Howard is a beast. BOOK IT!!

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

^Just upset because the Lakers aren’t gonna win any time soon.

  • Magic fan

    He sounds sour
