Mike Brown: Kobe Bryant Deserves Serious MVP Consideration

The NBA’s MVP Award is believed by many to be a two-man race this season between LeBron James and Kevin Durant, but Lakers’ head coach Mike Brown is already on the campaign trail for his own superstar. From the Daily News: “Yes, he definitely should be involved in the MVP talks,’ Brown said. ‘I think it’s hilarious that he’s not. … Everybody is talking about how he’s 85 years old or whatever they’re saying, and he’s leading the league in scoring. He’s efficient. He’s got his team in a good position. I truly believe this team, especially with a guy like that, can be dangerous come playoff time. There’s no doubt in my mind that Kobe Bryant should be mentioned in the MVP talk. I’m baffled.’ [...] ‘My TV was on ESPN when I was heading out (to go to the game) and I heard somebody say Kevin Love because he has his team at .500,’ Brown said. ‘Now Kevin Love is a very good basketball player and he’s putting up extraordinary numbers. But if you’re going to say Kevin Love is in the top five (MVP candidates), then Kobe Bryant needs to be in the top two.’ [...] Why vote for Bryant in 2012? ‘Who plays with the injuries he’s played with?’ Brown said. ‘Who puts up the numbers he puts up? Who goes through all the stuff with the amount of changes that have happened to his team in this shortened season? Nobody.’”

deserves to be in the conversation, i think he’s fifth, but LeBron and KD are the 2 legit candidates to win it..,

    Stand by your man.

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

    No he doesn’t..

  • joseph

people dont see the fact that bryant deserve to be mvp they look at other players like lebron and durant just because they young dont make any difference if you watch closely and see what bryant is doing hell yeah he should win mvp this year should be kobe year for mvp so get real people and vote the guy on black mamba u are the best nba player in our generation hands down keep doing your thing and let the hatters hate u my mvp u are LA mvp we all know it

  • ripslam

Dude just went 8-26 in a loss last night. Not saying he hasn’t exceeded expectations this year, but MVP? Come off it.

  • LA Huey

Has something changed this season to where Kobe Bryant can be described as “efficient”? I mean, he’s still an elite player but he’s hardly ever been efficient.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

regardless of whether he deserves consideration or not, he won’t get it, so who cares

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

Why not?? Because he takes too many shots?? Mike Brown has a point…somewhat.

  • RunNGun

    MVP = R O S E

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

..and Tony Parker should get some considerations also.

  • Biggie

when i said mike brown was saying everything right to please kobe i was almost crucified by my friends, but i think we’re getting to that

  • Dan

if the lakers keep their 80% win percentage from now on, sure he does. that could also show james the difference of being just better than anyone and greatness.

  • Charles

Look at Lebron’s stats, you meathead!

  • Dan

@Charles: thats what i said. he (lebron) is a better athlete than anyone out there but yet he has to prove that he has got the same greatness like guys as bryant, jordan, olajuwon, shaq, duncan, nowitzki, etc… or to put it in your words: count his rings, you meathead ;)

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

    In before this becomes a Kobe/Lebron mega-post…

  • abaci

I don’t think deserves MVP consideration. he will probably get another scoring title though.

  • 23Bulls

ofcourse he need to be in the MVP talk …

  • Rainman

He’s a top 3 candidate to me, that is serious consideration in my opinion.

  • VanCityVibe

Watch him drop 82 against the wizards

  • Yesse

Well, i think he has a shot.

But if he wants to be under serious consideration, then your team has to be in top 4 atleast.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

I think he should be in the top 5 no doubt. But putting my LA bias to the side no way he gets it unless LA gets the best record in the West.

What is the Bulls record without Rose this season? Anyone? RunNGun?

  • bull22

MVP, not with that pedestrian record he wont. kevin durant gets my vote this
year. same team from last year showing huge improvement with a major signing,
but iam sure those lebron sympathizers will give him the award.

  • bull22

the bulls would totally suck without rose.

  • Bt

^^^ the bulls don’t suck without rose, they’ve played well without him. They play better without rose than they do without Lou Deng (rose is better but Deng is more important to the bulls defence, evidenced by the fact he has the best +\- of anyone in the league)

ALSO I don’t get the lebron MVP talk. It’s most valuable player, not best player. Wade and bosh have carried teams to the layoffs by themselves, the heat would still be balling without him.

Without looking I remember those Bulls winning while Rose rest his lil achy back. The Bulls didn’t fall apart during his absence. No sir boss. lol

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

Orlando would be like Charlotte without Dwight.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Kobe should be considered for 3rd or 4th. He doesn’t deserve any more consideration then James or Durant – and as of this moment, he definitely doesn’t deserve more recognition then Tony Parker r Chris Paul.

I’m getting on the Tony Parker for MVP bandwagon. I’m not joking.

  • http://slamonline.com Spaceship Jay

    I’ll take… 5th.

  • underdog

If you take out Kobe form the Lakers lineup what do you get? Not much. If you do the same with LeBron, you still have a top 5 player on the Heat roster. I think Kobe and the Lakers are in a difficult position, just check the standings. I’m not say Kobe is the MVP, but he shouldn’t be overlooked just because he’s shoots too much. He’s a candidate.

  • CubicleWorker

Where would the Lakers be without Bryant this year? That shows his value.. I think even without James, Heat would be leading the division. OKC would probably be doing alright as well. As much as I like Rose, his team continued to win without him so is he really the “most valuable”?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Where would the Lakers be without Andrew Bynum?
Where would the Spurs be without Tim Duncan?
Where would the Heat be without Chris Bosh?
Where would the Thunder be without Russell Westbrook?
This could go on and on.
Kobe is not more valuable then LeBron James, or any of those guys right now. And it’s not just about taking them off their respective teams, the difference between a playoff team and a non playoff team are big. But the difference between the best team in each conference and everybody else is even bigger.

What would the Spurs be without the GREAT Tony Parker?

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

Tony’s been (quite) unstoppable right now.

Story of Mike Brown’s career – be a crony.

  • robb

the Seed is no longer Kobe’s biggest fan. Mike Brown took over.

  • http://juan.garcia@computershare.com MoveOverBacon

    MVP Formula:
You take the top 5 records in the NBA. You look at which ones have only one all-star on the team. If more than one, then you go to the team with two all-stars at the most. If more than two the candidate is disqualified.
At the moment it should be Rose, Parker and Howard who should be in the running. They do not have all-stars next to them right now so with out them their respective teams would be playing for a good lottery position.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

still can’t believe the lakers forced kobe to take lebron’s leftover aka mike brown.

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

Mike Brown does not deserve to be coaching a team with this much talent.

  • http://www.dfhggf.com cheema

Since when was Kobe ever “effecient”?

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

the Seed is no longer Kobe’s biggest fan. Mike Brown took over.
@robb–I am Kobe’s biggest fan, because of his game, but Lakers need to finish top 3 in West for him to win MVP, with the way the media votes for MVP now. Bron is playing with two All Stars and another top 4 player in the NBA and he might win a MVP-WOW. Kobe for what he is playing with him, sorriest bench in NBA, he is the only guard on the team that can score consistently and they suck on the road, but can make run in playoffs. I think Kobe is MVP, Westbrook outplays Durant some nights–check stats too, Bron plays with Wade and Bosh. I take Kobe, with all the injuries this year and team turnover. BOOK IT!!!

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

Kobe has been my fave player forever but, tha MVP is based off popularity now, so i dont see him winning it although he deserves it

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Does he deserve consideration? Of course. I don’t know how a guy averaging 28/6/5 (if rounded up) don’t deserve consideration. But he doesn’t deserve to win, he doesn’t dominate the game night in and night out as much as KD or Lebron.

  • Y.C.Chen

who cares he plays with injury? And c’mon Mike Brown, there are other players playing with injuries, and i never heard a word from them. as if that gives Kobe some bonus. LMFAO.

  • Matt Park

If Lebron does not win the MVP this season, I am going to RAGE!!!!! Not really, but no one should win it over Lebron.

  • Blakos

Kobe planted “the seed” in Mike Brown

^^^ Yeah the Bad Seed. Washington just tore the Lakes a new one with team play, while Kobe missed 30 shots & he still gets props? Gtfo Mike B & Clean yourself up coz you got mamba seed on your chin. I dont see him being a Lakers coach for long.

  • Justin G.

You really think they’re going to fire Brown after only one year with a not so good Lakers team in a lockout shortened season? Really? If that’s the case then there are a lot of coaches who need to be weary of their jobs with only a one year try to get it done

  • http://www.nesn.com/2012/02/kobe-bryant-says-hes-better-than-michael-jordan-second-to-wilt-chamberlain-as-best-nba-player-ever-v.html shutup

Cosign the Fury. TP should be #3 followed by Kobe then Rose, Parker has to be the most underrated PG of this era, I bet you ask a casual fan to name the top ten pg’s in the game he’s left off 75% of their lists, he’s probably the most decorated PG in the game right now, cant think of one with more hardware still playing

  • Justin G.

    Derek Fisher. Hahahaha

  • will

Kobe has pretty much been the glue of the Lakers this year. he has battle through injury all year and is leading all scoring. seriously, lakers are nothing without kobe.

  • Justin G.

I think Kobe should be around 3rd/4th in the voting, depending on whether Parker can keep up what he’s been doing until the end of the year. It doesn’t matter though because either one of them is going to finish a very distant third to Lebron and Durant (yes in that order) but Kobe definitely deserves to be in the discussion at least

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

Well if the Spurs can get the #1 seed in the West, Parker will get ahead of Durant. But of course, he’s sooo underrated it won’t happen. Pfffttt….

  • jake

I dont care about regular season mvp anymore, when’s the last time the mvp led their team to a championship? Shaq with the lakers?

  • http://www.nesn.com/2012/02/kobe-bryant-says-hes-better-than-michael-jordan-second-to-wilt-chamberlain-as-best-nba-player-ever-v.html shutup

Fisher has more championships but tony parker has a finals mvp, plus fisher has never been an allstar. Fisher has also never been the best or second best player on his team.

  • Justin G.

shutup, you do know I was being sarcastic right?

  • http://www.nesn.com/2012/02/kobe-bryant-says-hes-better-than-michael-jordan-second-to-wilt-chamberlain-as-best-nba-player-ever-v.html shutup

I do, but Fisher and Nash are the only ones who come close and then you have Kidd, Rose and Rondo but none of them are even close.
