Report: Josh Smith Tells Hawks He Wants Trade

Just like his close friend Dwight Howard, Josh Smith wants a new team. According to Michael Cunningham of the AJC, one of the reasons Josh Smith wants out is because Hawks didn’t promote his All-Star candidacy enough.

Here’s more of Cunningham’s report:

Even as Josh Smith is having a strong season for the Hawks he has let the team know he wants to be traded as the March 15 deadline approaches, according to people with knowledge of Smith’s thinking.

And the reasons for Smith’s dissatisfaction with the team now have to make the Hawks wonder if they will be able to sign him to a contract extension next season.

By the end of last season Smith wanted out of Atlanta because he believed he was singled out for unfair criticism by coaches and media. Those concerns have died down for the most part this season but now Smith believes he needs a fresh start with a franchise where he can better reach his potential on and off the court, according to one of the people with knowledge of Smith’s thinking.

The person said one of Smith’s complaints is that he believes the Hawks didn’t do enough to promote him for selection to the All-Star team, which he thinks contributed to lesser players being voted to the team by Eastern Conference coaches. Smith, an Atlanta native who has played his entire seven-year career with the Hawks, also would like to play for a franchise he believes is more committed to winning a championship.

josh for pau. straight up. l.a. gets the athlete they were missing. atl gets a legit 7-footer and horford can finally play the 4.

  • jay cutler

Hate all you want, as long as you preface it by admitting Josh Smith is statistically playing the best ball of his career.

Because when Kobe does it, he wants to win. When Josh Smith does it, he needs to stfu. Hurrr durrr.

This trade has never crossed my mind before but it makes sense in so many ways. Atlanta needs a center(Pau)which frees up horford, when he gets back, to slide to PF. Lakers get younger and athletic PF replacement in Smith and probably a throw away player to get the numbers to match. Win-Win for both teams, Mitch get on this

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I know his flaws. Still want him in LA. That little PG the Hawks got would have to come also.

  • tomtom

    @Jay with the anticipation lol

  • T-Money

jay: what drives everyone mad is that josh smith would be a superstar if he just stopped shooting jumpers. he can’t shoot, 30% from midrange and close to -10% from 3.

  • http://counterkicks.com Quinned

“according to people with knowledge of Josh Smith’s thinking” what?

  • jayrose

He is having a good season so his value is up there

  • blakos

I like that trade for both teams T-money

  • Kadavour

all he needs is a coach who can convince him to become Dennis Rodman. I agree, LA would be a good fit for him. Somehow i see NJ making a play for him. We all know he wants to play with Dwight. And he’d really benefit from having a really dynamic PG.

T-Money: Not straight up, LA would also demand a point guard. Luckily, Hinrich is playing behind Jeff Teague and even if his soul is gone from the Chicago days, he’s still a huge upgrade over Fisher and Blake. Money works too.

  • Magic fan

    Come to da Magic

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

Pau/morris for Smith/Hinrich. I would way Teague to the lakers, but I think ATL still likes him. otherwise maybe they throw in Teague, Lakers throw in Blake and a 1st

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY

Smith and Teague for Gasol… That definitely does sound good…Until David Stern hears about it!

  • bdogg

josh to orlando so dhoward stays in orlando..would kill dwill staying in nj/brooklyn..time for jay-z to play recruiter!

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

I can see the Magic making a strong push for him. Ryan, JRich, Hedo for Josh and Marvin?

  • http://dsjfkl.com Jukai

No way Magic gives up Anderson and no way Atlanta gives up Teague.

  • http://www.slamonline.com aman from arkansas

    Hawks: J. Farmar,Mehmet Okur
    Nets: Josh Smith

  • Magic fan

    I like how caboose thinks

  • Jer Boi

get him and Dwight in NJ And their set for years. Find a way Prokorov!

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Jukai: Unlikely, yeah. They’ll happily give up Baby though. Josh would almost guarantee Dwight stays though; those two have wanted to play together since high school.

  • T-Money

jukai: other way around, there’s no way atl does that for ryan, hedo and jrich. but you’re right, teague is not going anywhere.

  • http://dsjfkl.com Jukai

T-Money: I thought Dwight Howard was in that list. Actually, it was such a ridiculous trade, my mind placed Howard there because it was the only way I could grasp it.
Honestly, Gasol for Hinrich and J-Smooth isn’t terrible. It’s probably a neg neutral trade but may energize both teams.

  • Jose

J-smoove and D12 as your front court would be one of the most athletic pairings i’ve ever seen. . . though The LA/ATL trade makes sense even more. . . .

  • bull22

@KHOLIDAY, stop it…only reason that trade ddnt go thru is cuz tha league (who David Stern works for) OWN the hornets…

  • Respect

Bynum or dwight and pau for jsmoove. Lakers sign agent 0 and trade that odom money for beastly. Make it happen kobe!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2012/03/laker-players-doubting-mike-brown/ bike

Always like Josh’s game but he strikes me as a tad bit flakey. I wouldn’t go for the guy if a team has existing chemistry issues.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

    What’s a more athletic duo, Blake/DeAndre or Dwight/Josh?

  • jpm34

Dwight and Josh together would be SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://dsjfkl.com Jukai

LOL Respect… I’m bored and waiting to head out to dinner, so lemme entertain your fantasy.
Some talk out of the Orlando camp was that they wanted a centerpiece and expirings… so maybe they do Dwight and Hedo for Bynum, World Peace, Barnes, Murphy and Kapono + First rounder
Then, let’s say Atlanta says we gotta trade Josh… and does Pau Gasol and Morris for Smith and Hinrich
Then let’s say that ridiculous Milwaukee rumor was true, and the Wolves really do pull 2nd round + cash for Beasley, so they can develop Williams…
Then the Lakers can run a lineup of Hinrich, Kobe, Beasley, J-Smith and Dwight to start, with Blake/Goudelock, Hedo/Ebanks, and McRoberts coming off the bench for an 8-10 man rotation.
All the math works out. Enjoy this fantasy.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

    Lol that’s just cruel Jukai…

  • http://dsjfkl.com Jukai

Caboose: I could have added “and Mike Brown gets lockjaw from holding his mouth open all season, and his replacement is Jerry Sloan” but I didn’t want to go overboard.

  • AdamD

Love Josh Smith, i truly believe he is one of the most versatile players in the league. He can shoot occasionally hit jump-shots (shooting 30% this year from 3, not great but it’s not appalling)he just does it too often when there is an opportunity to drive or pass. His defence and rebounding are great. I’ll be gutted if he leaves the Hawks.

  • jake

@ jukai. Just threw it in trade machine.now follow me on this cause it gets crazy. The Lakers could trade bynum to the hawks for jsmoove and tmac. Then trade pau and 2 picks for d12. Then Lakers sign Gilbert and sheer. And just for farts and fun Atlanta trades al horford for mont8 Ellis!

  • http://dsjfkl.com Jukai

Jake: I was trying to entertain the slightest of realism here, haha

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Is anything with the Lakers “realistic” though Jukai?

  • theDankerNuggets

“…also would like to play for a franchise he believes is more committed to winning a championship.”

Seems like an after thought to me. I have always thought Smith is a really talented player that just doesn’t have the right mentality to be very successful, and this proves it to me. The fact he would even complain that the Hawks didn’t promote him for the all-star game is ridiculous. I am guaranteeing right now that he will never be a big part of a championship team because he would never accept the role he would have to take.

  • Rainman

“ne of the reasons Josh Smith wants out is because Hawks didn’t promote his All-Star candidacy enough.”

This guy is still as immature as he was when he came into the league out of highschool clearly…

  • dma

i can’t imagine him and dwight on the same team. would any guards ever drive in the lane against them?

  • Björn Atli

The Celtics need to pair him with Rondo like in the Oak Hill days. That would promote his all-star status in the post-big 3 era

  • Björn Atli

Sorry for the double post, but a strech four like Ryan Anderson or Rashard Lewis before him compliments Dwights game better than an athletic dude who bangs inside would.

  • slimtebow

without smith my hawks are fugged

  • -Mas-

That would be a good final destination for Pau Gasol. ATL was the team that drafted him and then sent him to Vancouver. Not such a good trade but it all worked out…for Gasol.

I don’t know what’s more hypnotizing, Mike Brown’s big mouth, or Anthony Davis’ unibrow.

When I see Mike Brown, I think Al Roker is family.

  • misso

Josh Smith to the MAGIC. Get it done Otis

  • robb

It would make sense. Nice upgrade and he’s Dwight’s best friend in the league. You improve the roster and make your main guy happy.

  • zero

Man Otis must do something to get Josh Smith..Smith is very versatile because he can play PF and SF. Magic need to grab this one to make Howard stay..They got big baby and J smith whom Howard really wants to play with.

  • bnets

    JOsh Smith to the Nets!

  • Yesse

    I smell an opportunity here.

Trade Pau for Josh and Kirk or a 3-way trade where Lakers give up Pau and role players for Rondo and Josh.

  • RunNGun

To the Knicks for Melo… make it happen, Dolan.

  • Myung

    Bye, Josh.

  • Myung

Josh and Kirk for Pau (yes, the guy we drafted and traded in 2001 for Shareef) and picks sounds good to me. Peace out, Josh. Won’t miss you.

  • AD

THE NETS need to make a deak now while waiting for Otis to make up him mind

  • smoove

he wants to come to celts…him and rondo are BFF

  • dmoney007

    Hawks: Amare Stoudemire, Toney Douglas
    Knicks: Josh Smith

Think…Smith has been playing way more efficient then STAT. Both offensivly and defensivly. I dont think theres much to say. STAT watches to many players just go up for a layup without doin anything JSmoove wont let that happen. Make it happen Dolan.

  • Fresh Boirdee

I feel ya Josh… I would like to see him go to the Nets. Dwight(5), Josh (3), Marshon(2), DWill at the point… That’s a playoff Team.

  • Leyk

    Smith to Cleveland !

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

It’s not about what compliments Dwight for Orlando anymore, it’s about what makes him happy.

  • nimzoray

Orlando-NY: Dwight and Turkoglu for Amare and Chandler
Atlanta-NY: Josh and Hinrich for Melo and Douglas

NY Starters: Dwight, Josh, Turkoglu, Hinrich, Lin
Bench: Novak, Davis, Walker, Jeffries, J.R. Smith, Fields, Shumpert, Bibby, Harrelson

C’mon Dolan, Dwight and Josh would most probably want that.

  • Banner18

hes rondos best friend in the league…they were roommates in college and still spend alot of free time together
