Report: Larry Bird to Retire from the Indiana Pacers

According to the NY Post, this season will be Larry Bird’s last run as GM of the Indiana Pacers: “He has definitely decided not to return,’ the source asserted. Hired six seasons ago as Donnie Walsh’s eventual replacement, Bird was paid $5 million per for the first five. It appeared he was about to retire to his home in Naples, Fla., after last season. However, a strong finish, topped by a promising first round playoff showing against the Bulls, and an appeal from owner Herb Simon to stick around convinced him otherwise, in spite of having his salary slashed to $1 million. A handshake promise was given Simon last summer by Bird that he would consider re-upping for another season, but that has been ruled out. It’s believed Simon is aware of such and has a petite list of prospective replacement candidates. Walsh, I’m told, is eager to get back to work full time for a team as soon as his consultancy contract with the Knicks expires, yet it’s doubtful he would be rehired by Simons. ‘They’re just not as close as they once were,’ claimed a source. The firm belief by those with a pulse on the situation: Simon is more apt to choose a marquee name like Reggie Miller or Chris Mullin as opposed to promoting the people on site, general manager David Moray or personnel director Kevin Pritchard.”

Larry did a great job there. Rebuilt the team after the Detroit brawl into a young, competitive team with flexibility to make roster moves. I’d love to get Miller out of the booth so I can watch TNT games with the volume on again.

damn, not only i regret him as a coach ( and knowing due to his back issues it won’t happen again ), now that he finally kinda succeeded into turning the pacers from losers to serious outsiders in the east, i thought he would stay … my bad.

@Fredd “Damn you need to stay off that crack, man!!” (Chris Tucker voice)

Hire Kurt Rambis! Just kidding, they’ll promote from within. Does the name Kevin Pritchard familiar to anyone, Blazers fans?

Didn’t think he would step down now that they’re winning…

one of my favorite playoff moments: after reggie hit a huge shot (i think it was during their run to the 2000 Finals), everyone in the building was going absolute bonkers, and Larry just stood there with the most stoic face ever. as someone would say (may have been The Sports Guy), it looked like Bird had died but forgot to fall down.

    @ Albie,

I remember that. Bird said later that he didn’t jump because there was still time on the clock and they were playing MJ’s Bulls. And sure enough, MJ’s bank shot at the buzzer almost went in….That was a great game.

Was that the game that Reggie pushed off MJ for that 3? I remember that as well. I don’t understand Simon’s thinking here. Why wouldn’t you promote from within? Bringing in Reggie Miller just because he’s a marquee name in that town is ridiculous. People don’t come out to watch the GM although if it gets him off of my television screen as an announcer than I’m all for it

This makes me very worried for Lance Stephenson… :’(

REGGIE MILLER would run the Pacers into the GROUND…Isiah Thomas…Michael Jordan…next up: REGGIE MILLER

i have the same feeling that most of you guys’ have regarding to Reggie, the Pacers GM: i’ll be happy that we no longer have to listen to Reggie during games, but it’ll be sad to see him run the promising Pacers to the ground. it’s almost a guarantee. ex-star players rarely make good GM’s.

@berkamore: that explanation makes sense, though it’s a better story without that reasoning.
