Mike D’Antoni Resigns as New York Knicks Coach

Well, wow. Amidst a new wave of Melodrama, Yahoo!‘s Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni has resigned. Crazy. Here’s more: “Mike D’Antoni has resigned as coach of the New York Knicks, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. D’Antoni and Knicks owner James Dolan agreed on Wednesday to end his three-plus-years run as Knicks coach, a source said. “It was a mutual decision to no longer coach the Knicks … conflicting visions of the club’s future,” the source said. … Assistant Mike Woodson, who formerly coached the Atlanta Hawks, will take over as the interim coach.”

YES! Maybe Melo Would Want A Trade Now! hahahah :D

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Guess he decided to dump the Knicks before they dumped him. “It’s not you, it’s me…” Let’s see if Mike Woodson can do a damn thing for the Knicks now…

  • anonymous

This is the first report I`ve seen about D`Antoni`s resignation.

  • Fat Lever

Kind of sad he’s the fall guy for the NY mess. The fact of the matter is that without Melo in the lineup the NYK were 6-1, looked like they were enjoying playing ball, and actually looked like they cared a little on defense. Melo is overrated and now has his first coaches head on his fireplace mantle.

  • ernieD

So much for the feel good story of Jeremy Lin. The team never looked better than with him ruling the offense. Melo comes back, disrupts the flow of the team offense, team nosedives, Melo gripes… and it’s the coach’s fault?

  • Justin G.

While he isn’t exactly the most innovative coach in the league I think the front office screwed him over big time. If I’m not mistaken he never had a chance to work with the same roster two years in a row and yet was expected to turn things around just because on paper it looked like they had a decent team. He won’t be out of a job long I’m betting

  • anonymous

@Fat fall guy? You make it seem like he a victim. how long has D`Antoni been there? And now many PO appearances do the knicks have? How many PO wins do the knicks have? This was inevitable.

  • http://slamonline.com the kidd 7

Bye bye.. now he can go lose somewhere else if he even coaches in the NBA again holla !!!! D’antoni

  • http://averysmith.org Avery Smith

Come to the Wizards. Come to the Wizards. Come to the Wizards.

  • wasp26

I would have preferred to see Melo get traded than this. Lin wont be the same player without those high screens he feeds off of, and Melo still wont play defense, D’antoni wasnt the problem here.

  • http://www.huwlhopkins.com #6marjon

yeah. cos he was the problem

actually anonymous i read it on yahoo sports about 10 min ago. anyways good luck Mike Woodson cause (ludacris voice) Ellis and Jennings are coming for that number 8 spot

  • Kenyon Chapman

    Thank you God!!!!

  • dma

    RIP Linsanity.

  • JM

Damn, what a mess. NYK just can’t get it together this year.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

I would have done the same thing.

  • dma

just this year? when was the last time they had it together?

  • OTB

I don’t care what anyone says, this is Melo’s fault. The team was at .500 and lost like 2 games with Lin at the helm, and Amare as the second fiddle. In D’Antoni’s system, the PG rules the play. Carmelo is a stat chaser more concerned about his own stats than he is about winning, which is why he was griping he didn’t get the ball in isolation. Lin began second guessing himself with every Carmelo stare down when he wasn’t passed the ball, and the end result is this.

Lin hasn’t exactly been spectacular since Melo’s return, and I’m going to say that a large part of that is just Melo’s overwhelming presence out there. He wants the ball and Lin doesn’t feel comfortable shooting it with Melo ready to take it from him.

Damn I knew it was a lie its not even on ESPN

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

If you’re going to hire D’Antoni as coach, get players that fit his system, or get a new coach. Seems pretty obvious to me.

  • http://KingAkai.com Alpha-bet

Wow…Well when it rains it pours in NY. It’s hard to believe that just a couple weeks ago The Kicks was the toast of the League.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

I wonder who’s the next casualty in the “it’s never Melo’s fault” campaign.

  • BoWeezy24

I Hope The Knicks Still Suck To Show Melo It Wasn’t ALL The Coaches Fault! Still A NYK Fan Tho!

  • Socal.S

How long til Phil Jackson is coaching there?

  • stevvvvvve

shame on the knicks front office…. no wonder this team will not win an nba title for a long time, and high profile coaches will think twice before signing to coach this team…. i am not a knicks fan wat so ever but i just think its disgraceful when you let a player who has not won a ring himself dictate the direction your franchise “thinks” its going…. shame on anthony shame on dolan shame to all the front office… this man will never bring a team a championship … sorry ass bum .. best scorer in the league my asss.. defense wins championships .. proven fact…

  • Jono

  • Rainman

This guy had to go…but i wont deny it. Melo is the biggest b*tch in the league. Dwight is a close second this year

  • OTB

If he really truly cared about WINNING, Melo would have adjusted to the Knicks success without him.

  • Otis

    It’s on ESPN now.

  • BoWeezy24

Whats Next? Is it Going to Be Stoudemires Fault?

  • FnF

    Using your government name FTW

  • BoWeezy24

I think Amare Signed To NYK To Re-unite With D’Antoni.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85Bl3GRdULQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player 1982

I bet the Knicks trade for Mike Brown now…

  • bike

Don’t fret Mike, you’re better off in the long run leaving this retarded franchise.

  • Otis

PS good grief. What a shambles.

  • BoWeezy24

Phil Jackson: I’m Ready To Coach Again. (Will You Coach The Knicks?) Phil Jackson: …. Fuck That!

  • FnF

I’m betting the house that NY wins tonight. Melo will step up defensively as if to say D’antoni was holding him back from playing defense. So far, teams that have fired a coach and won the next game are 2-0. [Wiz, Kings]

  • AM

Over the years I have developed a similar feeling for the Knicks doing well and sucking. D’antoni resigning just keeps that feeling afloat.

  • Mooney10

Always falls on the coach? I am glad he left on his terms rather than stay just to be fired, but its all on Melo, he has single handedly made the team worse with his play, he blames the coach says he won’t stay if coach does, coach is leaving. Knicks gave too much for Melo for him not to be “happy”, but he plays terribly, no defense, and can’t do anything effective without the ball, pretty sad turn of events. Well hey, at least Melo is happy, lets see if that changes his play…NOT!

  • bull22

i called this weeks ago and make that months ago when they hired woodson as
defensive coach. but as i said earlier the blame goes around and it falls squarely on d’antonis and carmelo’s shoulders. now we shall see the MELO-ISO
    SHOW… LOL!

  • http://dsjfkl.com Jukai

So Orange, how dem playoff chances looking?

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

    lmao this ^^

  • Otis

Watch as Lin gets dispatched back to the bench now. Melo can’t handle not being King D*ck.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Jeremy Lin’s career just took a huge blow.

  • Heals

Good for him. Gimme MikeD over this Melo and whatever Amare has left all day, everyday. He didn’t want the Melo trade, management forced it and followed it up with repeated moves focused on individuals and not the team. NY is gettin everything it deserves…

  • http://www.slamonline.com TADOne

I actually feel bad for Mike Woodson.

  • Edwards

They really need to get rid of Melo he is a real cancer to the team. With him they can not win because he is not a team player. Poor move

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Well, since Woodson loves isos, Melo should thrive.
He also loves pick and rolls, so Amare should be ok. Lin will have to learn how to run a traditional offense now, and we’ll see what his game looks like now that he’s off the juice. He could be fine.

  • Edwards

Melo is a “Celebrity Athlete” he plays for the next endorsement and appearance. What a waste of salary. Melo has not been able to do much for the team in respects to basketball. He is a fluxe

  • bnets

The Nets are taking over New York!

Somewhere, in Soviet Russia, Prokorov is deviously grinning, rubbing his chin, muttering “It’s all coming together”.

With all these superstar divas gaining power, there won’t be any coaches left in the NBA.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

even better info: carmelo is due $60+ million the next 3 years, amare is due another $60 million the next 3 years, and chandler is due $45 the next 3 years.
    best front court EVER.

It was the right thing to do. Good luck to Mike D’Antoni and his family in the future. Thank you for teaching me what SSOL means. Good luck in Toronto. Your wife will love the Toronto Eaton Centre. Call RuPaul for more Toronto 411.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I fully expect Baron Davis to be starting by end of season now. D’Antoni getting fired is going to cost Lin millions of dollars.

People criticizing his overall record as head coach should stop and take a look at the rosters he had the first two seasons. No offense Chris Duhon, but you’re not what someone would call a good starting PG in the NBA.

  • dan

lol @FatLever: you know that there is no soviet russia for more than 20 years now? ;)

and a big YEAH! :D at the headline. as a die hard knicks fan since the early 90s i can only cheer at dantoni stepping down. i liked him as a phoenix coach but new york should allways be about defense and passion. mike has never been a ny fit. i wish him all the best for his future but i am also happy that he is gone now. i really hope that some D saves us our season from now on. but i am afraid that this change of culture wont happen over night…

  • http://gifsoup.com/view/2419491/fat-kid-crash.html LakeShow

Co-Sign nbk. Unfortunately. I liked watching Lin when he was ballin. The ballin has stopped though.

  • Rik Smits Mullet

the melo drama continues. Looks like a ductaped big three doesnt guarantee a championship. Also bad luck for lin he flourished in the d’antoni system.
Hope everybody quits voting for melo in the allstar game next year.
Best thing that happened to the knicks was melo getting injured.

  • Fat Lever

@dan, I know, it was a reference to Family Guy.

  • Otis

@nbk – yep. Baron starting, and the Knicks losing. Of course, it won’t be Melo’s fault, though.

  • Fat Lever

I would love it if Melo got booed in the Garden at the next home game. He might backpedal all the way through the tunnel to the locker room if that happened. Shout out to my alma mater Temple University and Mardy Collins.

  • BoWeezy24

… Lin Goes Back To The Couch…..

Next up, package Lin and Mar’e for D-Howard. Crazy. :)

  • The Truth

All this to please Melo? Bench him or trade him, put JR as a starter!

  • Fat Lever

Dwight is playing it smart. He’ll go to NJ with D-Will, Lopez, Humph(provided he signs), one of the best shooters in A Morrow, and best of all, a lottery pick in a deep draft. Things are looking up for BKLYN. Can Jay do any wrong?

  • http://www.twitter.com DFrance21

While this recent skid should not have been grounds for his firing, D’Antoni’s days in NY were numbered. The players didn’t fit his style and he’s unwilling to adjust it. It’s easier to fire the coach than to trade a proven diva like Melo.

  • RunNGun

This is very sad news. Even if the new coach gets here, Melo will still be an issue. Book it.

  • http://hoopshirts.com hoop shirts

there is always drama with the Knicks. can they ever just have a season without all the ups and downs?! it’ll be interesting to see what happens with them though from here on out. maybe this will spark the team and they’ll bounce back?!

  • bull22

someone will want jeremy lin, i had my doubts about him in the beginning but he will be fine. any guy that can outscore kobe bryant and then have a 28 pt 14 assist game against the mavs will have many takers. needs to be on a team that will allow him to run team and continue to develop.

  • McWill

Any of yal who think Melo is overrated are just prisoners of the moment… Melo doesn’t fit D’Antoni’s system, just look at the Suns in the mid 2000s, they did not have a one on one scorer, just a Steve Nash to set EVERYBODY up… But I don’t put all the blame of the Knick’s struggles on D’Antoni tho…. Amare Stoudemire is playing like a bum nowadays, settles for TOO many jumpshots and his ability to finish around the rim is diminishing…imo (even though it won’t happen) the Knicks need something similar to Phil Jackson’s triangle, gives Melo the freedom to post on the block or the elbow, allows the shooters to get their shots up, and takes pressure off of the pgs (Lin/BDiddy)…Woodson’s system is too much one on one thats why they didn’t win anything in Atlanta, but that should make Melo happy…

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    Chris Duhon.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Melo will be happy now. The other 14 guys. Won’t.

  • David

Woodson and Melo Had Something Planned? Hmmm… Naw idk I’m Just Sayin’

  • Mike Mihalow

At least the Knicks were good for a fraction of last season.

  • http://www.adultism.com justlenny

    Lin….. prepare your anus

  • http://theillustrationboard.tumblr.com/ Stepfan

Knicks should holla at Jerry Sloan next season.

  • anonymous

Now that D`Antoni is gone, the only problem the knicks have is: 3 starters(melo, stat & lin) who need to dominate the ball in order to be effective; 3 starters(melo, stat & lin) who are defensive liabilities at their respective positions; 3 starters(melo, stat & lin) who do not mesh well together; 1 coach(woodson) who underachieved with less talent(atlanta) at his last job; 1 front office who has no idea what there doing; 1 team in excess of guards; 1 starting PG who cannot not turn the ball over 5 times per game; 1 offense that does not fit the makeup of the team; 1 team who does not grasp the concept of defense; and 1 one city(NY) whose expectations are/were through the roof.

  • ClydeSays

D’Antoni showed breifly what he could do when the ball moved as designed. He EARNED Lin a multi-million dollar, multi-year contract with someone. Not sure Woodson or any coach can salvage this new mess.

  • dazzy

Good start, but now get rid of Melo and bring Dwight to NY.

  • Moj

What about all of these reports recently that the players simply weren’t buying in to D’Antoni’s system? Don’t be so quick to lay the blame on Melo’cancerous play. Just saying.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Dwight just said he’s not opting out, so no trade is happening there. This Dwight drama will happen ALL over next year… Also read that D’Antoni asked Dolan to trade Melo for Deron Williams. After Dolan said no they agreed that D’Antoni would be better off leaving the team.

  • Bash

Once again the Knicks are a horrible defesive team with some very talented players who need to dominate the rock. Maybe one day they will spend Dolan’s money well and construct a TEAM that plays to a system that suits the various skill sets of the squad. It isn’t gettng any easier being a knicks fan…(sigh)

  • anonymous

@O I just read the same thing about dantoni.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Dwight didn’t say that. It’s confusion and bad reporting.

  • robb

    about time

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

i bet he’s thinking “well, at least i didnt get fired!”

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Sources say he told a member of the staff he’s opt in. But the players meeting is where the news that he’d opt in originally came from. And he never said that in that meeting. He said he was “all-in” for THIS season. They have to get it in writing that he won’t opt out, from him and his agent.

  • LA Huey

What a dysfunctional franchise. Does anyone else think the best fit for Lin is to be surrounded with shooters and athletes that can’t create a shot for themselves?

  • LA Huey

So how much is D’Antoni regretting taking the Knicks job just before we found out the Bulls would be able to draft Rose? Bulls fans, I’m sure, are happy they only had to suffer two years with VDN before getting Thibs.

  • ripslam

At least a defensive-minded coach is taking over. I like Woodson, never understood why he was fired in Atlanta.

  • http://www.slamonline.com TADOne

Wait so D’Antoni wanted to replace Lin with Deron Williams after what Lin did to keep him around as long as the Knicks did?! Anyone find that knife?!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

because Woodson can’t coach offense and switches every pick and roll on defense.

  • Waggle

    Mike D resigns.
    Knicks still suck.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Woodson being a “defensive” coach is funny too me. Where is the proof of that?

  • http://www.slamonline.com TADOne

I don’t know about a defensive coach but Woodson was a great assistant under Larry Brown in Detroit in ’04

  • AD

is mike woodson that bad?? He had that hawks team looking good a few years back.

  • MikeC.

@Fat- I think it’s more accurate to say: somewhere in Russia, Prokhorov blurts “Holy crap, I forgot I bought an NBA team!”

  • Rainman

@ IAMORANGE: …now why in the world would Toronto let go of a guy who has proven to get the most of his players in coach casey, for Mik D’aintoni? lol.

  • DingoRob

I believe an injury right now for Lin would be a blessing in disguise @nbk

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

You mean to preserve his reputation? Instead of watching him fail? You might be right

  • http://facebook.com/tronjohnson Chief

Now not only is Mike D a loser he is also a quitter. This ain’t west Virginia you in the big leagues boy! NBA teams need coaches who can whip everyone into shape, not just one under paid Asian Harvard grad.

  • J

Another casualty of this lockout season. Imagine trying too work a player as complex as melo into an offense and make it work well without training camp. If they waited maybe till next year maybe they could’ve worked it out

  • b-nEWT

    send Melo to the D-league

  • DMC14

I’ve always been told as a fan of the NBA defense wins tiltes and i beleive this just look at my Suns. Championships – none.

@Rainman So are you telling me there is a chance? @nbk Knicks 121 Blazers 79. That’s a 42 point win to end a 6 game losing streak. The first game without Mike D’Antoni. Just sayin’.

  • Startown

Bench lit it up against blazers!

  • roybot

@Orange Knicks’ win tonight was more Blazers than it was the Knicks. We gave up at least 8 wide-open 3-pointers to two of the streakiest shooters in Novak and J.R. Blazers are more dysfunctional than the Knicks, yes I said it.

  • LA Huey

Blazers have been bending over for the last dozen games. Don’t get too excited.

  • http://slamonline.com J

It was never Melo’s fault. Can someone make a website with that name? Lol.

    So stupid.

  • burnt_chicken

I’m with Orange. I think D’Antoni would make a GREAT assistant to Casey.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

They played the offense they knew tonight. Just sayin.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

How can you really think Woodson put in something new in less than 12 hours? Not too insult your intelligence or anything but that is pretty stupid. They pretty much just got a big monkey off their back. The team has been playing divided since Melo got back. And the Blazers have been falling apart for half a month. One team relieved and refreshed, one team down in the dumps. Not too say D’Antoni wasn’t a big part of the problem (unable to control Melo, in any sense of the word), because he was, but it was HIS offense that won by 40 tonight. Not Mike Woodson’s iso offense. He probably had different goals on the white board in the locker room, and his speech had a different focus. Other then that, what you saw was a combination of the Knicks playing cohesively in what Mike D already had in place & the Blazers being horrid.

  • philly4rm@frika

good riddens….. the Knicks are not the suns

  • Justin G.

cosign nbk…Tonight’s game had nothing to do with any coaching changes whatsoever. It’s not uncommon for a team to come out in this fashion wanting to prove (especially Melo who tied a season high in assists) that they weren’t the problem. Unfortunately, it won’t last with this cast because they’re not going to change their nature. Melo is an iso player and the lack of ball movement is definitely going to hurt Lin’s game. It’s unfortunate that the front office still somehow thinks Melo isn’t a big part of the problem and weren’t open at all to trade possibilities.

    People in NY hated him

^ Wow, look at these two… Love them though. At least they’re consistent with their hatred for the Knicks. Maybe they’ll watch the next game instead of just looking at the boxscore! The truth is fellas, Mike Woodson is running the offense through “Iso Melo.” Swallow the truth baby.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    I did watch the game.
