Derrick Rose: ‘I’m Sick and Tired of People Trying to Take Cheap Shots at Me’

by Adam Figman | @afigman

Derrick Rose takes a beating. Anyone with his skills would, what with the flying around guards and big men en route to acrobatic, body-bending finishes around the rim, all while those same guards and big men do their best to slow the reigning MVP down anyway they can—even if it means hitting him with a flailing elbow or shoving him mid-flight. And, frankly, Rose is sick of it. So sick, in fact, that he took to the media about the beating he ensues nightly after the Bulls 100-94 win against the Detroit Pistons Sunday night.

Via the Chicago Tribune:

One call Rose did get came with 4:31 left in regulation. [Charlie]Villanueva whacked Rose as he drove on a fast break, getting some ball, arms and cutting Rose’s face. Villanueva compounded his mistake with a technical foul for a four-point Bulls possession.

He and Rose exchanged words as he left to get his cut addressed.

“I’m sick and tired of people trying to take cheap shots at me,” Rose said. “I was mad, man. I’m a man, so situations like that, you have to say something. He hit me in the face and didn’t even aim for the ball.”

Rose can lobby for calls as much as he’d like—and he may have a great point, because he has been getting beat up around the hoop—but as long as he’s dominating offensively, he can expect those annoyingly dangerous cheap shots from frustrated defenders to keep coming. Here’s hoping the hit that injures him (any further than he’s already been injured) doesn’t come anytime soon, if at all.

Save that ish for the all-star game.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

When did Rose become a whiner? I think that’s the theme of the 2011-2012 season: whining.

  • http://www.nba.com Shadojoker

Haters gonna hate (reference the previous posts above)^^^^

  • Aizen

Rose: “I’m a man, so situations like that, you have to say something.”

No, Derrick, you beat the **** out of the guy.

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

The Whiner of the Year award is going to be tight as hell this season.

NBA: Where Whining Happens…all the time.

  • Duh

Luckily he doesn’t listen to you Aizen because we kinda need that guy around for the playoffs

  • Mike Mihalow

You’re the current MVP, deal with it.

Aizen: if you’re in high school. When you grow up there are consequences.

  • School of hard knocks

I really wonder what happens if today’s pusssies like blake, bosh and rose played laimbeer, xman, charles oak and the big dawg.

  • ponder

are you guys serious? Other dudes at least get it called for them, thats why wade bron and kobe lead the league in ft every year. rose doesn’t get any where near the same respect

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

Well, when you have an MVP under your belt, players see that as a target. And I’m pretty sure things were 5x more physical way back then.

  • FnF

It bothers me that players don’t realize they also have 6 fouls to give. Lay a mofo out if you got a problem DRose. You think Lebron gives a F___ someone is standing in his way as he drives into the middle of their chest? NO!!! You think KG or CP3 thought twice before they sack tapped the opposing team? NO!!! Mr. Rose, you need to step your game up to Chris Childs’ level… ASAP!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

watch some mj vs pistons games from late 80′s n early 90′s and stop
    feeling sorry for yourself

  • hemp

Anyone who follows basketball, especially the NBA knows that it’s a different game these days. Every play you have a player lobbying to the refs about a foul. On top of the game changing to be more entertaining. These casual and new school fans don’t want to see a knock down drag out game, with great defense being played. Back in the day, guys played through it. MJ may have yelled at the refs, but it was while he was picking himself up off the court and running back on D. These guys today, bull rush through the lane, jump into a defender, and throw up a prayer…then when they don’t get the call, they stand there look at the ref, and whine. What did Shaq do when they began to foul him more, he kept playing the same way until they changed the rules. I like D. Rose, but he’s the reigning MVP on the 2nd best team (record wise) in the league, what does he expect…for teams to just let him do what he wants in the lane…no, they’ll treat him as if he was just another guard trying to beat their team.

  • Exile

A lot of hate. He is a tough player, but got a little torqued after some cheap shots. Big deal.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

His team mates need to step up for their leader and knock some heads. Everyone saying the team loves each other but sh*t your star player just got his a$$ clocked and nobody ran up on Charlie?! That’s the crazy part of the whole thing.

  • MELO

Rose needs to stop whining. Iverson took worse shots and just got back up. and even HE didn’t play in the 80s.

^^^^ True dat ^^ + Rose was better when he wasn’t the MVP. Looks like he cant handle it. When is he gonna throw his toys out the crib.

  • bike

Well, DRose, one solution is become more of a spot up jump shooter and stay out of the lane. Of course, don’t be suprised when everyone lables you a pansey because you avoid contact. That’s what happened to VC.

  • Nene33

Great job for speaking out, Derrick, people are acting like Jordan, or Iverson never talked about taking cheap-shots, they did so all the time.

Don’t idealize the past, this is what a star-player does.

Keep it going D, GO BULLS!!!

  • ab40

this year’s and last year’s mvp awards shouldn’t even count. He wasn’t the best last season and nobody really stands out this season. It’s a lot of fun and no fun at the exact same time. And Rose come on now you’re playing against grown men who are bigger and athletic and sick of tired of you embarassing some of them. Charlie V had no (facial)hair and he was probably just jealous of your ugly wanabe facial hair.

  • Justin05

When D Rose attacks the basket he has to expect contact..he’s tiny compared to forwards and centers. This is why he is getting injured, you can’t take the ball to the rim everytime and not expect to get f’d up. Happens in 2k12 all the time..

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=rwDluFZQmtQ nbk

wait till he has to play the Saints…

  • Oh Nose

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

We need to put this into context. When you’ve missed half of the season you’re frustrated, especially a guy that ONLY missed 6 games in his first 3 years. He hasn’t dealt with any of this stuff before, now everytime he gets hit badly he worries about injuries. He’s just back and he could easily get injured again. Now I agree 1st, 2nd year Drose wouldn’t say anything but that’s exactly the point he doesn’t want people to think they can just walk all over him so he’s saying something back. I know I’m a major Bulls homer but I have no problem with Drose expression his honest opinion every once in a while whatsover. People are always b*tching about how Rose doesn’t have a personality doesn’t have emotions, well I guess he does, whoopty-doo big f*ckin suprise people.

  • 23

How can you be an aggressive scorer, whos greatest strength is driving in and welcoming contact, be complaining about physical play? Are You gonna get all the calls? No. But no player does. Rose.still goes to the free throw like frequently. Anyone ever notice not many pgs in NBA history base their offense on driving to the rim? Look at LeBron, as he drives to the rim I always notice hands reaching and slapping or grabbing his arms. When your that quick, athletic, and strong you gotta expect it. anyone who.chooses to play like a slasher, primarily, has got to expect tons of contact… Especially unnecessary context

  • JB

Get use to it DRose. You get paid big bucks and you are on a big stage.

  • Rik Smits Mullet

ahh drose is so humble he never complains. Such a humble guy. Amazing.

  • AsadSaleh3

I think some of you need to learn what complaining and whining is. It’s not what D-Rose is doing. Teams are starting to punish him when he gets to the basket. Last season was a surprise to a lot of teams, they didn’t expect him to make the leap he did from his second season. He’ll get used to it. Also, if you’ve never taken a hard foul from an NBA player (which I’m sure none of you have since none of you have been in the NBA), it’s very easy to make fun of people who have. You make yourself sound foolish when you decide to do that. He’s never been injured like he has been this season. He’s frustrated. No big deal here. Also, it’s extremely foolish for people to continue to say he didn’t deserve the MVP last season. Smarten up. Did you not watch the Bulls play? The award doesn’t go to the best player every season. There’s a difference between the MVP and the best player. That’s why Kobe only has 1 MVP award. It’s also why Karl Malone won over Jordan that one season.

  • Jerome

Damn it Smits. Beat me to it. KG was right about CV.

  • http://www.andywhitby.com Andy Whitby

I wish a player had said this in the eighties/early nineties …

  • jayrose

Rose is tough. He just said this bcuz he was mad. Anybody that balls knows that when your emotions get to you, you step up and say something. He’s not gonna stop doing what he does so he’s not a pussy or weak. For all you haters out there I would like to see what you say when your driving the ball in to the rim and someone hacks the crap out of you without any intention of hitting the ball. I wanna see if ya going to stay quite when it happens to you.

  • ALD

@FnF’s comment was right on… Those dudes dnt care when their driving all wild to the basket trying to dunk on someone so why they get mad when the defense wants to hit em….. That is HYPOCRTICAL

  • huami

Wow, surprised to hear this. Now, you get to feel what Iverson had to go through every season!

  • jpm34

Damn, nbk had me rollin w that Saints comment!!

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Co-sign T-Ray and I have been saying it since the beginning of last season, but for as much as the Bulls talk about having each others’ backs, everytime Rose gets laid out I have yet to see any Bulls players get in the opposing players’ face or get them back by laying out one of their guys.
I think Deng was the exception, he got in one dude’s face once after a hard foul on Rose.
Other than that though, it’s always the same thing.
Big man lays out Rose or fouls him hard. Everyone runs to Rose to help him out. No one even bats an eye at big man.
Anyways, first time Rose complained about lack of calls I was right there with him.
I think this is the third time this season he’s said something to the press about it.
    Now it’s just getting annoying.

  • AsadSaleh3

Most of us fail to even try to see things from the player’s perspective. This isn’t the 90s. Same with music. You can’t compare today’s popular artists/basketball players with the 90s. Two different eras. Different cats. Different climate.

  • Rik Smits Mullet

this is the third time this year drose whines about fouls. If i channel my inner hollinger he is leading the league amongst driving players in complaining about fouls. But even after this offcourse he is still the most humble player who never complains. Also people who followed the national clubber association during the 80s and 90s are getting fed up by these muscle upon muscle players whining about getting tickled in the lane.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Red

Rik..you’re an idiot. Tickled? Wish you would go to the NBA & try drive it in. You’ll be looking for a feather & only find a bloodied face lol. You guys have not played in the NBA stop acting like you know.

  • Zabbah

He’s so humble. Athletes shouldn’t be humble.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

lol @ the comments, at the end of the day, He still gets to go back to his reality, because he’s a winner in real life, while yall just b**ching about how the tough the 80′s used to be. lol, shout out to lebron.

  • http://www.slamonline.com yada

yo why have we immortalized past players like they did NO wrong? like they were the manliest of men and tougher than anything today? no the hell they were’nt! u know how much iverson flopped? how much he complained to refs? hell even the great holy michael jordan complained! ppl act like during the jordan rules piston days mike never said anything. he just shut up and took the pistons beating without telling the media he didnt like them taking shots at him! we like to think it was sooo much better and great then but that aint the truth

  • http://www.slamonline.com yada

oh and allen iverson is the guy that STARTED the whole yell “AHHH” and frail your arms to get the foul call!

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I’m not a Bulls fan, but Rose is currently my favorite player in the league.. I understand his frustration, but it IS part of the game.. He needs some of his bigger teammates to have his back when he starts getting bullied like this..

  • jake

Most of you have no idea what it’s like to drive full speed into the lane and be laid out by someone twice your size on purpose multiple times a game. It’s not whining when your career and health are being endangered.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

Yea Enig I don’t get it. They have a team full of guys that in my opinion would classify as head busters especially Noah but he’s a b*tch I guess. And cosign Yada to the full 9! Everyone acts like past players didn’t whine at least once. Stop glorifying them for acting a certain way because you’re naive if you think the same sh*t happening now didn’t happen then.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Jake, he could pick his spots….it’s nobody’s fault Rose gets punished for driving into the lane chalk full of defenders but his own. Refs don’t reward being reckless. (not saying he shouldn’t drive the lane, but you get what you ask for. Can’t blame the refs for something everyone who has ever played basketball at a competitive level already knows)

  • FnF

@NBK, exactly. Randy Moss rarely ran a crossing route. People clowned him. 130+ TDs later he only trails Jerry Rice. The defense has adapted to Rose, now he has to change. Take some pages from Steve Nash and keep your dribble alive in the paint.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

As a slasher, that is the line of work he’s in. AI went through the same thing and I never heard him complain (at least not as much as Rose).

  • http://www.starting5.com.au NM30

    What a sooky la la

  • http://www.starting5.com.au NM30

He is a sook too man this new generation of nba players are crybabies

  • bull22

every team the bulls face is going to throw everything at rose including the refrigerator hoping that by doing this they can knock out bulls out of playoffs, the key is the whole bulls needs to continue to lock in, step up
    and get it down.

  • Rik Smits Mullet

i would be hospitalised if i tried driving the lane in todays nba. But probably died in the nba of yester years. Also because iam not build like a tank or a cast member of 300 like most of the driving nba players are. But because i didnt play in the nba i cant complain about million dollar athletes who even get payed thousands while getting fouled. Come on dude. Bill laimbeer probably would have eaten drose during the 4st quarter and get away with just a simple foul.

  • lakernation

In New Orleans we call them bounties!

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY

D-Rose starting to feel himself…. U get fouled like everyone else in the league. You’re a strong, athletic dude. Ppl are going to foul you to try and prevent a 3-point play. Plain and simple… First you were a demigod now this? Cmon Son (ED LOVER VOICE)!

  • AsadSaleh3

AI after Game 2 of the NBA Finals in 2001 said something like “I can’t remember the last time I only went to the free throw line twice with how much I go to the basket.” How is what Rose has been saying different than that for those of you who say AI never “whined” or “complained”? Rose isn’t feeling himself at all. He just wants fouls called when they occur. Again, the 90s are over. Come join us in 2012. This is a different league. Let it go.

  • AsadSaleh3

It’s very easy to say “Stop whining” while you’re sitting behind a desk with no knowledge of taking hard fouls in the NBA. Again, look at it from his perspective.

-Rose drives full speed at defenders.

    -No foul call, Rose whines.

  • 23

What fouls are we talking about here? I swear people make it seem like rose is getting tackled out there. He sometimes gets those EXTRA HARD fouls, but so does everyone else. if rose doesn’t want.hard fouls he should try the wnba, because the nba has ALWAYS had hard fouls and they always will. Especially if your a player like rose who is built like LeBron, hard to stop and constantly drives hard to the lane.

  • T-Money

people need to stop romanticizing the 80s and 90s. yeah, detroit and new york were very physical but that was not the whole league. i remember growing up that west coast games would routinely be in the 120s or 130s, no one was playing any defense in the western conference.

  • http://cechicagorilla@aol.com yada

what u mean how a.i said it? did u see a.i postgame convo? better yet did u even see d.rose postgame convo? how do u know “HOW” he said it? or u just judging how by words printed on a screen

  • tomtom

Iverson used to get beat up way worse and he would either get in the guys face or shut up about it if you want to cry to the media then tell your coach to do it for ya like D12 n Blake.

  • jake

He should just start throwing elbows when he goes in for a layup, knee a few people in the nuts….

  • jake

The whole point is, if you’re going to play tough d, so be it. But throwing cheap shots on purpose to “punish” someone is idiotic and shouldn’t be tolerated. Play the game the way it’s supposed to be played. I have no respect for people that can’t play defense, bailing themselves out by being cheap.

  • AsadSaleh3

AI sounded exactly like Rose. Very calm. Just voiced his displeasure. They said it the same way. And AI said it on the biggest stage in the NBA, in LA after an NBA Finals game. I do believe the Bulls miss Kurt Thomas for this reason. Kurt would have layed out Stuckey or any other guard to send a message. No enforcer on this team.

  • AsadSaleh3

  • anonymous

I have been watching basketball since forever and there is no comparison to what Iverson went through and what rose is griping about. Iverson`s slight, bony build and persistent, gritty invasions of the defenses` painted-area is unparalleled. AI just wanted his due opportunities at the charity strike when he got hammered. He accepted the beating and the consequences or injuries that accompanied the physical nature that defenses impose upon him, he just wanted to be compensated with free throws. rose is in fact complaining about being fouled (hard). if you drive into the paint, you will not be granted a free layup by the opposing team or an AND1 opportunity. that`s the reason for hard fouls to prevent AND1s and to send a message to the opposing team that you are not going to do whatever you please in “our painted area.” hard fouls does not equal “cheap shots.”

  • http://theurbangriot.com The NUPE

I understand why he’s frustrated, but all he’s really accomplished is letting other teams know that the hard fouls are getting to him. Hence, in the playoffs you can count on teams stepping up and being even more physical with him.

  • AsadSaleh3

…All Rose wants is foul calls, same as AI. No dirty play. He feels that some fouls are dirty plays that aren’t on the ball. Same thing.

  • jake

When you throw an elbow at someones face, then yes it’s a cheap shot. Wrap him up if you don’t want him getting an and 1.

  • djb

    @NUPE I agree.

  • nbaNw8

    Why everyone bashing Rose?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Red

  • Jerome

@AsadSaleh3: 90s hip-hop is better plain and simple. Real lyrics. Real talk. None of this Weezy/Drake/Minaj nonesense. Hip is knowledge and hop is movement. Put the two together and you get 5 sides of a coin.

  • Jerome

In any league on any court in the world, players receive cheap shots all the time, thats how basketball is…at least Rose gets paid millions of dollars…

  • AsadSaleh3

Not arguing which era is better because that really doesn’t matter here. The main point is that the 90s are over and you can’t compare the two eras as if today’s players should play like the guys in the past did.
@Red You think the Bulls have an enforcer? And Kurt Thomas isn’t one? Ever watched him play? Some of you all really comment as if you don’t watch much basketball at all.

  • http://www.nba.com Red

Yes because you’re all knowing about basketball? Well, funny cause we have the toughest bigs in the L, and Kurt is 40 & when he was here he never started no big fight/argument. So you look like an idiot.

  • AsadSaleh3

@Red I just watch. Apparently you don’t. Boozer is tough? I wouldn’t say “we” as if I’m a real Bulls fan like you just did and then claim that the Bulls have the toughest bigs in the league when Boozer is included in that frontline. I think that may be your bias showing itself.

  • anynomous

Watch Boozer and you will see that he plays terrible defence, especially close to the basket, poor lateral movement, doesn’t keep hands in passing lanes etc. He get carried defensively by the OTHER Bulls bigs, (Noah, Asik etc). His offensive ability, (which is also soft in some respects) carries his poor defense. I am a big time Bulls fan and always have been but calling Boozer ‘tough’ is a huge over statement.

  • b

Allen Iverson without the heart… AI never complained he just got up and killed em again…

Guys, you have to learn to take what Red says with a grain of salt. He’s not very knowledgable about basketball. In fact, he’s ignorant. :-) AI complained as much as anyone else about foul calls. He didn’t do it during the games but he would make comments in the post game interviews at his locker and such. Kurt Thomas may not have started many fights but he had his players’ backs if they got flagrantly fouled, thrown to the ground, cheap shotted or whatever.

Honestly, on one article all you guys call Rose humble, and on the next a whiner. I will bet that half of the guys here will miss a layup and cry about being ‘hit’. He said this ONCE and all of you are jumping on him. You have to respect that the guy is throwing his body around right after an injury.

Caboose actually summed up the whole situation. You can’t drive recklessly and expect to not take some hard hits. These young guys make athleticism the main focus of their games. Try perfecting your jumper so that you don’t have to rely on drivng so much, Rose. If a guy kept trying to dunk on me, or make me look like a fool at the rim, eventually I’m gonna give him incentive to work on his outside shot.

ive seen ROSE play live, in person a few times, and I was completely SHOCKED at the amount of contact he plays through and takes on a play-by-play basis…the good players in the league almost get fouled every time, the refs just have to pick and choose ..can’t call every foul.

  • Wall Ball

  • Wall Ball

    @Bike…You saying Rose can’t shoot the J?

  • The Old School

A whine? The future of the franchise taking shots to the face, hard fouls, knocked to the deck in a shortened season where players aren’t getting proper rest. D Rose is right. I hated the Bad Boy Pistons and the way they played. Today, it’s turning back to the not so glory days of the Pistons and the Knicks intentionally trying to hurt players to get an advantage. Do you really want your team to lose their star player on some BS hard foul? Maybe, we could bring back Kermit Washington, Maurice Lucas, and Chocolate Thunder to punch some of these Laimbeer-types in the head.
Playing the game well is physical enough. Hard fouls are old school and should stay there. I’m not saying bail out if you get beat, but play good defense and have good rotations. Try to play the game better and take the injury causing fouls out of the game. I always felt if a player becomes injured because of your intentional foul, you should have to sit out as long as the injured player. That’s fair; you took a key piece out of that team, return the favor!
