Derrick Rose on Fame: ‘It’s Just Weird. I’m Never Alone. Ever’

Derrick Rose is the cover subject for the May issue of GQ, and the Chicago Bulls’ superstar guard opens up about what it’s like to deal with enormous, unrelenting fame, among other things: “Derrick Rose, the reigning NBA MVP, lives on the eighty-fourth floor of the Trump building in Chicago, one of the tallest buildings in the country, right up near the roof, with wall-length windows overlooking the city he rules, the only city he has ever known. The view is disorienting and all-encompassing, sort of like he’s living on an observation deck of the Willis Tower, which happens to be right over there, one of the only points above us in the mess of verticals downtown. Rose also has a home in Northbrook, by the Bulls’ training complex, but he says he has that place mostly for convenience, so he doesn’t have to drive back into the city after practice. Someday he’d like to have a house, ‘my real house,’ where he’ll ‘have kids and just live in my spot.’ But he can’t do that now, not even close. This condo, the one he just moved into about a month ago—it is almost entirely unfurnished; two of his bedrooms have no sheets on the beds and are filled with stacks of unopened boxes—this is his escape for now. Eighty-four stories up in the sky, secured away. ‘I like living here,’ he says. ‘They just try to make you comfortable. The people here, they are mostly from out of town; they don’t know who I am. That’s why I picked this place.’ (It’s easy to understand why one would enjoy working in this building, too. When Rose orders two bottled waters for us during our chat, he hands the bellhop two $50 bills.) Presidents talk about how the White House begins to feel like a prison. Rose speaks the same way about the town that adores him. ‘It gets on my nerves that I just can’t go out,’ he says. ‘It’s just boundaries now. People are like, ‘You can’t go here, you can’t go there, you got to let that person know where you’re going.’ It’s just weird. I’m never alone. Ever.’”

Tomorrow’s headline will read “Blake Griffin on Fame: ‘I never have any Me time anymore. Ever’”

  • T-Money

that’s also a choice. d-rose can also choose to not listen to advisors. different sport but a guy like wayne rooney is known to just hang out at regular spots all around manchester even though he is one of the biggest names in his sport.

    F*ck Fame

  • Mike Mihalow

If he wasn’t in Chicago, he wouldn’t have gotten that fat ADIDAS contract. Demand a trade to the Bucks/Jazz/Bobcats.

fame- its the worst drug known to man, its stronger than heroin, when u can look in the mirror and see there i am and still see what u become…

  • Charles Barkley

    Illuminati!

Fame tis an intoxicating drug. Illuminate on me why Blake Griffin and Derrick Rose are one and the same. Both in heart and in mind. It was magic Lakers in 2009. Was that all so far behind? Let us to the near future delve, it shall be Celtics Grizzlies in 2012. Illuminati. Eddie, 2013.

  • bike

I said get in the plane, smithers

  • Yep

chi just happens to be the murder capital… sooo yeah, they want to protect their assets. there are crazy ppl in chi, and there are people that would hurt him so that the bulls lose… especially in the playoffs. in the ECF vs. miami you think there isn’t some crazy dude that would hesitate to crack his knees (or conversely bron bron’s knees)? nah, protect your multi-million dollar investment. unless you’re cam’ron you don’t take your lambo through the hood (and we all know how that one turned out). d rose is worth a helluva lot more than a lambo.

  • T-Money

The irony is also notlostonme that hes saying how uncomfortable he is with fame.. In a GQ interview. Thats a choice.

  • Jerome

Gotta learn to take siestas, son.

  • Waggle

Damn I found that an interesting issues. Rose has some issues with self-esteem I think..I hope he can gradually resolve them going forward.

  • Da man

That would get annoying not being able to go anywhere n do normal things. But when u have cake killer him you gotta switch it up n play it safe.

  • Da man

I don’t know man, these rich people complain too much for me. I really, really want to see if I can handle being rich and famous. Someone give me millions of dollars. But seriously, where does he want to go that he can’t go? If I’m rich, I don’t wanna just up and walk to the bodega or McDonalds. Get you some security, a few childhood friends and do whatever the heck you want. Just one broke man’s opinion.

  • T-Money

I don’t buy the not being able to go anywhere part either. Where can’t Bron go in Akron or Miami? Dude has been to Little Haiti and Liberty City. KD pops up everywhere in the DMV with no security.

  • AsadSaleh3

Rose is a new superstar playing for his hometown team. KD doesn’t play for his hometown team. He might not have security, but he’s never alone when he goes somewhere. That’s just being smart. I’m sure a lot of folks want a piece of Rose especially with his new Bulls contract and Adidas contract. He’ll get used to it. He’s going to get a lot more attention as his career moves along. He said not too long ago that living in LA during the summer is good because people don’t really recognize him out there, I think that will be changing soon as well. He’ll adjust.

This is the weirdest SLAM comment board in a while.

  • ttc

that’s true about wayne rooney; he even used to visit “regular” prostitutes, and everybody knew about it cuz they saw him there..but i dont think he does that anymore

  • ttc

and being rich is great; but not being famous…the thing is no matter how u got rich, if you’re a millionnaire you become “famous” anyway..a lot more people know you or know about you than when u were just a regular dude..being famous on the scale of D.Rose must really suck, tho..people just ask too many questions and are too excited, + people wanna hurt u more..which is strange, really..people hate the rich, but they hate the rich AND famous more..weird

  • wishuwould247

I love Derrick Rose. I don’t think hes complaining, hes just being real about his life right now. Hes from Chicago, hes rich, hes famous, and hes young, hes black and hes a good guy . Our society preys on that. Not saying hes a victim and I don’t think hes saying that either. Some people on this blog just don’t understand what he has to deal with on a daily basis and what he has to avoid on a daily basis also. Eventhough hes Derrick Rose MVP rich and famous, he could be end up being Trayvon Martin. Minding your business, walking down the street and someone kills you for no vaild reason other than you a black male and alot of people in this society are cool with that.
