Gilbert Arenas Asked to Guard Kevin Durant, and it Somehow Worked

Meet Gilbert Arenas, the Kevin Durant Stopper. OK, not really. However, the Memphis Grizzlies’ big win last night in Oklahoma City was due, in part, to Gil’s defense on the Thunder superstar. Per the Commercial Appeal: “The Griz got away with Arenas defending Durant most of the second period and weren’t exploited by the matchup. It was a move dictated by [Tony] Allen and Rudy Gay’s foul trouble, and Arenas’ confidence in his experience. ‘He surprised me,’ Allen said of Arenas. ‘A few days ago, we saw Durant play Houston and Arenas said he use to defend him in Washington. He got his chance to defend him tonight and he frustrated Durant. That is the good thing about our team, we can mix it up and mix and match.’ Arenas said he suggested the move to the staff earlier in the day. So how was Arenas able to be affective? ‘He is used to bigger guys on him and just shooting over them when he gets space,’ Arenas said. ‘I knew that I needed to crowd him a little bit and make him uncomfortable. I wanted him on the block, and I had to pull out a few of my veteran tricks with pulling the chair from underneath him.’”

@JTaylor, The Mayans were right about what???

  • OkC

That’s funny because if O.J Mayo didn’t make the three with 17 SECONDS left it would be a different story mad oj did westbrook gun mode though

  • @OkC

thats was oj mayo signature celebration since huntington, mayo also did it against okc in the playoffs last year and now westbrook trying to rip it off and pass it on as his own

  • Blakos

    Ye boi!!!

  • Cheema

this is only happening because durant has no postgame! i remember mavericks pulled same stunt by placing kidd on him, and it worked!

  • robb

Arenas was able to be affective???

  • ChipS

Mayo has been doing that for a minute now. That’s three guys i’ve seen Memphis have that’s done a pretty good job on KD. All of them around 6’4 with Allen,Mayo, and Arenas. And they all get physical and take away his legs and lower body making him feel uncomfortable.

What are you tlking about? Gil was/is great! I’m not saying his the best but his a great player! even in Orlando they won’t just give him time to play at his best.

    lol good on Gil.

Was fun watching him easily hold his ground against a posting KD. Pulled the chair on him twice leading to turnovers.
Reminded me of the whole “guard Nowitzki with a smaller, quicker player and he’s done” mantra that Golden State started a few seasons ago.
The same mantra that Dirk has shot straight to hell.

  • Mike From Spain

What is this ‘pulled the chair from under him’ talk? could someone please explain? Now I want to watch the game.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

    Ola Mike.
Simple really, while playing lowpost D, u lean heavily against the offensive player’s back then as soon as he leans back to use that pressure against you (dropstep, spinmove etc) u pull back quickly. It’s a nice trick, often resulting in heavier, less mobile bigs losing their footing, stumbling back and traveling.

I don’t think there are five more players in the league with as much PASSION for basketball than the Hibachi, so that defensive request doesn’t surprise me at all. Happy he’s back where he belongs in the NBA.

Durant was scared Arenas was going to shoot him with a blank gun.
