New Orleans to Host 2014 NBA All-Star Weekend

Fresh off the news that their hometown franchise has a new owner, New Orleans residents have some more good news coming in: their city will be hosting the All-Star Game in 2014. Details via the Times-Picayune: “When NBA Commissioner David Stern introduces New Orleans Hornets owner Tom Benson at a 2 p.m. press conference day, Stern will also announce that the league has awarded the 2014 All-Star Game to the city, a source confirmed Monday morning. With Carnival considerations, and the 2013 All-Star Weekend already set for Houston, the next possible date New Orleans could host its second All-Star Game would be 2014. New Orleans hosted its first NBA All-Star Game in 2008, the first major sporting event to be held in the city following Hurricane Katrina’s devastation. Its presence helped announce New Orleans’ renaissance to the nation and beyond. As part of the new lease agreement announced on March 16 between the state and the Hornets, part of the deal included a future All-Star Game. Stern, along with Benson, Gov. Bobby Jindal and Mayor Mitch Landrieu will be making the formal announcement at the Arena.”

How do they select which city hosts the All-Star game? How is it that they hosted in 2008 and are doing again in 2014?

  • Jono

To be fair, NO could use some help when it comes to basketball.

  • http://nba.com GP23

Toronto needs to host it for once !

WTF This is ridiculous… No disrespect to New Orleans, but they’ve already had one in the past ten years. Why doesn’t the nba ever try new cities *cough cough* Toronto

  • FnF

@niQ, This is another NBA cares selection. New Orleans will host just about every major sporting event as logistically possible as a way to revitalize the area. Since Katrina, they’ve held a Super Bowl, Final Four, All-Star Weekend, Bush-Kardashian film blockbuster, umpteen BCS National Championships, the Gena 6 rally, and are already slated to have the Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch, the World Series regardless of who is playing, and the 2014 Winter X-games. It is what it is.

  • Mike Mihalow

Again? That team doesn’t even have a new name yet.

  • MELO

New Orleans always gets the big events. Most Superbowls, most Final Fours, etc. to be fair it is a fun city for events.

  • bdogg

i am very surprised by this..they just had an all star game in 2008..way too recent. i know stern vowed never to have an all star game in a cold weather city in february but if memory serves me correctly the new miami arena has not been used..they should have it in miami. i get new orleans could use the money but they just had it 5 years ago?? come on something new?? ATL, OKC??

TORONTO SHOULD GET IT, MOVE IT CROSS THE BORDER FOR ONCE

  • MUBWAR

the biggest market behind LA New York and Miami is Toronto. That’s just hating counting the number of all star games they had (0). The Raptors good or bad never get any us coverage at all. Bobcats and wizards both had 2 or more this season. there are 30 teams stern not 29

  • Dungeon Family

nobody wants to visit corny ass Toronto

    weak ass City

  • FnF

If Jordan has his way, the game would be held in Vegas every year.

  • DaS

Hey Dungeon, calm yourself and learn a little something about somewhere definitely better than where your at right now. Toronto is a huge market and definitely deserves it. By the way, are you like 45 and got your nick name from playing way to many loner video games? Get an education and a life, and don’t forget get to keep your dumb comments to yourself and undoubtabley dumb friends if any.

Right@Dungeon, nobody wanna go to damned Canada lol. But I’m mad they haven’t brought it back to Chicago, which is probably cause of our owner.

  • Dirtybird

It is a shame cities are hosting twice within several years, this isn’t the JFK era.

I imagine Stern trying to sell the Hornets…
“OK, look, they suck now and they’ll probably lose you millions next year, but what can I do to sweeten the pot?”
    “Hmm, what can you offer?”
    “2014 All Star Game?”
    “….A good start…”
“Ok ok, the All Star Game, a new team name, a couple extra ref-assisted wins at the end of this season and the #1 pick in this year’s draft. Deal?”
    “Deal.”

  • http://www.slamonline.com Red

WAIT who is slatted to get the #1 pick? Wizards si?

  • MUBWAR

well caboose that’s why the lottery room should have cameras. At least this year with Anthony Davis and all

  • lakernation

Thats awesome… I cant wait, my kids enjoyed the last allstar weekend we had here.

  • Jerome

@Dungeon Family, DaS apparently has a shallow hip-hop background. But the ASG should come to T. sooner than later. Maybe Sternbot is waiting for more global warming to ensue? One-to-the-two-the-three-the fo …

  • http://www.slamonline.com Red

No it shouldn’t. Why? Nobody cares for the Raptors & the majority of the NBA market is US people. Nobody wants to go to no Toronto, trust.

  • Bojangles

Simply judging by how many people roam these basketball forums that are Raptors fans, it’s obvious this city cares alot about basketball and would make a killing as an All Star site. Let’s not get into the whole Canada/US tiff because, quite frankly, the people that I’ve seen dissaproving of Toronto on this site have not made one decent argument. The city speaks for itself and trust me, NBA players have a wicked time when they come up here. Just watch a Sunday afternoon game at the ACC and you’ll know what I’m talking about. I assure you that Toronto is absolutely worthy of an ASG.

  • http://www.nba.com Red

Uhm, the fact that majority of NBA fans are Americans isn’t a good argument? If players enjoy Toronto so much why isn’t it a bigger free agency destination? The fact that there’s a team in Canada is even too much.

  • Reeld

plain and simple Toronto should get one, beautiful city, beautiful girls, global destination, Toronto and London are the most diverse cities in the world. That being said Toronto should get an all-star game.

  • YC

You people should go see Toronto in summer PERIOD.

    not in winter though…

  • quest

players may think they will get taxed heavily ,difficult for friends and family to go there. until recently, the raps were owned by the teachers .pension plan that wasn’t willing to spend money. The players are wayy to harshly criticized by the starving Toronto media(carter tmac, bosh, derozan soon). We dont treat celebs like stars like in other cities. its close to Detroit, thats a turnoff for when players want to go to the US for a while. Those are all the reasons toronto isnt a free agent hot spot
