Ray Allen Preparing to Leave the Boston Celtics After This Season?

The Celtics won’t have to nearly trade Ray Allen any longer once his current deal expires this summer; he may just walk out of Beantown all by himself. Per the Boston Herald: “Let’s say that after his contract expires on July 1, the Celtics fail to find a major free agent willing to accept a piece of their newfound cap space. If Allen gets a call from Danny Ainge, offering up a one-year deal at above average money, would that be enough to make him stay? Allen paused and grimaced. He wants better security than another one-year deal. He’s tired of sweating out trade deadlines. ‘I wouldn’t be surprised,’ he said of the scenario. ‘But I don’t want to go into this season, like I have in past seasons, worrying about whether I was going to be traded or not. At this point we want to ride it out, take this thing to the house, and not have the instability of not knowing whether today or tomorrow something is going to happen. For all of us, you deal with that over the course of your career, but wherever I end up after this summer, that has to be the No. 1 mandate. At this time I owe it to my family to be ultimately selfish, because I’ve been a very unselfish team player, and I’ll always do that. But when it comes to myself and my family, I have to make sure that I don’t rock their worlds or put them off kilter in any fashion.’ [...] He’s ready to pack up the wagon because he’s not ready to retire. ‘It’s hard to say,’ Allen said of whether he remains a Celtic. ‘The landscape always changes over the summer. Just from what I see around the NBA, there’s a lot of teams that look forward to having me. I just want to be somewhere where I’m valued, cherished and I can go out and play. By no means do I feel tired, or one foot in and one foot out. I attack it that way knowing that every day I can play, I can play 40 minutes, and I want to give that to whatever team I play for. The instant I feel I can’t do that is when I retire. And I’ll know it when it happens. But I don’t now.’ [...] Just as Allen’s time as a Celtic could be closing, he recognizes the era of the new Big Three may be two months away from its end. He also understands that the finality will probably be rougher on the fans than the players. Picture Allen as a Bull or Kevin Garnett as a Net. They will live to play another day somewhere else. ‘It gives fans a sense of conclusion, not on their terms, because you want to see this thing go all the way through and we walk into the sunset together,’ Allen said of what seems like an inevitability. ‘That’s what every fan wants from their team and players. As a player it affects you not in such a great fashion as you might think. I have history in other places. It’s my fifth year in Boston and I was in Seattle almost as long and Milwaukee longer. We played some great games here. You just cherish the moment because at some point it has to end. There’s nothing bad you can take away from it because we did so many things. But it can’t last forever.’”

I hope the Celtics can at least reach a mid-level deal with KG.

ray needs to go to another team, celtics need to rebuild

  • Joe Joe

    Come back to the Buck$.

  • Bt

Go back to Seatt… Oh wait nevermind

  • http://www.slamonline.com aman from arkansas

Chicago should release Rip and sign Ray.

  • http://Slamonline.com 1982

I have to say Rip for Ray almost seems like it would have the same results – they’d run the same screens and curls for him. It’d be better than earlier this season when Rip looked rusty as hell, but when Rips on like he’s been lately…

And as happy as I was when Jesus, KG, and Pierce won together, Ray Ray is still a Buck to me. His playoff battles were intense – wouldn’t be half as bothered as a Celts fan to see him on another contender. But only a contender. If he takes a max contract to play in Brooklyn or some ish, I dunno how I’d feel.

    ray NOOOOOO!!!!

  • BlackStar

Lol @ Bt. You dead wrong for that.

  • John Wall Jr

  • @boweezy24

    Knicks Can Use Ray :)

  • LO

Ray is probably going to __retire__ after this season. I mean, we all know that he needs surgery. Whos going to want to keep paying him at an advanced age and ankles only getting worse? How would he even practice his shot when he cant jump correctly?

I would like to see him go out a celtic and hang it up after this year.

  • shawnkemp4prez

Grizz sign Ray, Celtics sign OJ Mayo to rebuild.

  • Heals

Writing might be on the wall given Bradley’s ascension, JGreen’s return, Pietrus re-signs and other younger teams he would mesh well with. That said I would be cool with him going to Chi, OKC, SAS, the Clips, GS and Phx would be some nice landing spots…

This is sad to hear as a Boston fan, I hope he sticks around and doesn’t expect a huge paycheque, it seems likely we draft a SG with one of your picks, and it’d be great if he was there to mentor them.

  • LAguneroFan

cant believe its been five years…

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@boweezy24 that would really burn Ainge if Ray Allen did that. :)

  • Tammie V

I don’t blame Allen at all. Danny ainge is an idiot and would trade Allen on a dime. He’s been so obnoxious airing it out there publically how he wants to trade Allen like he’s a race horse. Ainge wasn’t that great when he played for Phoenix. (That’s how old I am) Certainly not the caliber of Allen, Garnett or Pierce. I can’t think of any organization out there who has publically humilated the Big 3 on how eager he wants to trade. Time to trade Ainge.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

No, he wouldn’t trade him on a dime. He signed him for his remainder. Gave him a 2 year $20 million dollar contract. Didn’t take numerous trade offers including a very solid one from the Grizzlies featuring OJ Mayo and a pick. So no, Ainge wouldn’t trade him on a dime.
    .
Honestly I see Allen being in the league past 40 years old. He might even make a run at Robert Parish’s title. He’s that well conditioned of an athlete.

  • LA Huey

A dead eye shooter from 3 pt range AND a professional. LakeShow’s right, Shuttlesworth can find a good job in this league for years to come.

  • OkC

He should be the starting SG for thunder

  • iknowmybasketball

as a celtics fan, its heartbreaking to hear news from one of the most well-mannered players in the league. i really want to see the big 3 retire as a big 3 in Boston. if any one of them choose to play for another team i dont think they should be given the right to that nickname. I’m not questioning Ray’s loyalty, but I truly believe KG will retire in Boston – cant really say the same for Mr. Shuttlesworth. I just hope Ray sticks around Beantown until the end of his career.

  • LOLOL

PORTLAND WOULD BE A GOOD FIT WITH CRAWFORD LEAVING

  • tomtom

MY COMMENT IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT’S CAPITALISED

  • ClydeSays

He’s probably looking for at least 2 yrs @10 mil per on a playoff team. Knicks make sense since they’re close to his home but they’re over the cap. Maybe Philly? He’s been great on the C’s, but he’s shown that he’s most effective coming off screens and having a PG who can feed him the ball… Maybe Chi is the best fit…

  • http://slamonline.com J Du Bois

    lol at tomtom

  • VC

He should sign with the Denver Nuggets! Andre Miller will probably sign somewhere else this offseason since he’s looking for a starting job somewhere, something Denver cant offer since Ty is their starting PG. Now I know Ray dosnt play point but rudy fernandez can play point and open minutes up for Ray at SG. ray says he wouldnt mind coming off the bench so … or ray could start instead of AAA. The lineup could be like this: T.Lawson, R.Allen, Gallo, Faried, McGee and the second unit: R.Fernandez, AAA, W.Chandler, Al Buckets, Mozzy/Koufos. So basically Denver loses Dre, sings Ray who could play SG either off the bench or as a starter, and Denver moves Rudy to the backup PG position.

ray is a celtic won a championship they need ray no one can out shoot ray stay with the celtics

I have been a Celtics fan since the days of Bill Russell, Havlecek, Bird, etc. When they all retired I thought, wow what happened to the years. I thought they would always play, never grow old, but they did. I dont remember Ray much before the Celtics, but what I do know is that he is not the player he used to be. No matter how healthy his body is, it is bound to start breaking down. I dont remember him missing so much time sitting out since being with the Celtics or having such low numbers, even though he has hit some game-winners and clutch shots. he still has the most beautiful 3-pointers I have ever seen. I would hate to see him in another uniform, but that is going to be his choice. I think Ainge will re-sign KG(probably for less money) but I dont think he will offer Ray another contract:( I love the Celtics. They are a team unlike any other team in the NBA!

  • Southside Babe

i think Ray should stay with da Celtics even if it has to end someday or year but, we Celtics fans will be hurt if he leaves us high n dry. But, Doc won’t give up his starting players for noone i don’t think he would.. Because he loves all them as if they were his own.. Allen noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo:(
