Report: Dwight Howard Told Magic Owner He Won’t Play for Stan Van Gundy Anymore

In addition to speculation that Dwight Howard’s back injury is serious enough to keep him sidelined for the Playoffs, the latest piece of drama out of Orlando is that the superstar center reportedly called the Magic’s team owner during a game last week, and informed him that he won’t play as long as head coach Stan Van Gundy is coaching the team. (SVG, when reached for comment today, told the Orlando Sentinel the following: “I make nothing of them and I have no comment.”) Yikes: “Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard told team owner Rich DeVos that he won’t play for coach Stan Van Gundy anymore. Howard was angered that Van Gundy publicly divulged that the superstar center asked management to have him fired, WKMG-TV said, citing sources. Howard made the call to the 86-year-old DeVos during Friday’s game against the Atlanta Hawks.”

    Redonc. All of it.

  • bike

Soon to follow this headline will be “Report: Dwight Howard denies telling Magic Owner he won’t play for SVG anymore”.

  • patrick

I think his back injury is tied into him not wanting to play for SVG. Pscyhological is tied into the physical.

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

(if this is true)Well he got what he wanted, he is definitely not doing this like Shaq lol

  • AiRsMiTh

  • Slamfan4life

just trade him already; offseason cant come fast enough for the magic

  • Well DAMN

    Horrific

  • Fresh Boirdee

Is Dwight purposely trying to tarnish his image?

  • dannyb

The big question is, who at the Magic organization is leaking all this BS to the press? Most dysfunctional team ever.

  • Zeke

SVG is a prick and if I was the best center in the game i wouldn’t want to play for him either.

  • Wray

Seriously?! Just when I think I’ve had my fill of this season-long Dwight Howard nonsense, they keep coming back for more. So sick of hearing about that dude. Trade his ass and be done with it.

  • bdogg

as much as i fault lebron..this is far worse..period!

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

By doing this he confirmed he asked SVG to be fired, even though he publicly denied it. Dwight is a sorry excuse for an adult and I want him off my team. Guess what Dwight, Stan will last longer than you. I hope you end up in Charlotte.

    yeah. I hate dwight now.

Cosign Danny B. — That problem is the reason this is such a f*cking mess.

  • http://www.blogspot.com LLC#12

Wow, I thought LeBron did a bad job tarnishing his image with the decision, but Dwight is absolutely putting on a masterclass right now, what an idiot!

  • Kinetik

d12 acting like a douche. he should just man up and say that he does not want to play for svg instead of acting like a big denial queen. this drama trumps the decision and the melo drama by a mile.

Seriously, the Magic are the ones running Dwight through the mud. He has done everything regarding Van Gundy behind closed doors. He tried to save face and deny it to the press. But Otis Smith/all his people/Van Gundy know that they will most likely be fired due to Dwight reprimanding them. None of them deserve to keep their jobs. Over-sized contract, a predictable offensive formula that has proven beatable in the playoffs, bad trades, and 0 rings. I support Dwight.

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

You people are ridiculous. Dwight is not the first player to ask for a coach to be fired. He has a valid point. Van Gundy’s system doesnt work. In the playoffs it is beatable. If you disagree: show me the rings. Van Gundy also does not have control over the locker room. Dwight’s stupidity lies strictly in the trade demand circus he put on earlier in the year. But Otis Smith and Van Gundy are both the wrong people for the job, and both deserve to be fired. They both know they are done, and now they are having people leak internal information to drag Dwight threw the mud with them.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Bet: So any coach without a ring’s system doesn’t work and therefore deserves to be fired if their star asks for it? Ok, Jerry Sloan, George Karl, Framk Vogel, Rick Adelman, Kevin McHale, and Tom Thibideau should be fired if their star thinks they should be. Got it.

  • dee

By not trading Howard for Brooke Lopez (and others) the Magic are going to regret this. Dwight is starting this madness is b/c he really doesn’t want to play for the Magic but instead of just saying that or manning up when the trade deadline was a factor, he wants to play this card? Hearing he didn’t want to play 2nd fiddle to Kobe turned me into a Howard hater…weather it was Howard not wanting to follow the same path as Shaq or not being the top dog in L.A, Howard to L.A sounded like it made basketball sense. Now its Howard who seems to make no sense.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

@Caboose, as annoyed I am of Dwight, you could’ve said the Raptors =P

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Haha I only said Bobcats cause I’d love to see Jordan and Silas bully him while he loses.

  • robb

Dwight is the kind of guy who wants to be liked by everybody, so he won’t tell you what he really thinks when he’s with you, he’ll pretend everything is cool, but as soon as you turn around he’ll start talking sh*t. He’s a fake nice guy

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

Caboose: Jerry Sloan would have a pair of rings if it wasn’t for MJ. Vogel and Thibideau are both newcomers. Adelman, Karl, and McHale all have been fired. While Adelman just has had bad luck with talent, Karl is another guy I don’t trust but strictly for personal reasons: he can’t control big egos in a locker room because his takes up too much space. Van Gundy got the team tailor made to his system and it failed. His concept of 3 point shooting + have a dominant center inside is only good for the regular season; in 7 games you can stop it. His defensive sets are great but his offense is too predictable.

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

    *fired multiple times.

  • Ldub

Lets give a nice round of applause for Dwight “Chocolate Shoulders” Howard. #12 in your brochures and #1 in your hearts. This mane has single handedly revived the broken, battered, burned IMAGE of Lebron James. He has now ripped that torch and burned down his own image. Seriously I dont understand this guy. The back and forth, ups and downs, twists and turns, I want in, I want out, I love Orlando and Im loyal, but I dont wanna play for coach SVG?? As much as I try to see Dwight for who he “used to be/should be”….every other day he shows me why Im no longer a fan. Dude should go to the Nets (without D WIll). He doesnt deserve to be a winner at this stage of his career. Not with all the drama he brings.

  • furiousfunkfanatic

Maybe they should make a espn-special with all those “sources” discussing the issue, would be a crowded room and very interesting…

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

organization got leaks like a ghetto tap

  • http://slamonline.com J Du Bois

@ Betcats … it would be fair to say that George Karl would have a ring too if it was not for MJ! SVG is a good coach and maybe his philosophy does not fit the team. But I promise you that if Dwight had more than two moves then this would not be a problem. Dwight can not even make you pay for fouling him which is terrible, thus his role in this offense is non-existent. Why would you tailor your offense to someone who is a non threat? I understand that he is the most dominate center in the league but how hard is that when there are no actual centers in your conference? There is only one other center in the league consistently playing (Andrew Bynum). This is the worst position for both parties

  • http://slamonline.com J Du Bois

@ BetCats Tyson Chandler > Dwight Howard …. TRUTH!!!! At least for the last two seasons

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

Dwight’s individual actions are only excusable when the sad context of all his previous actions is ignored. Still, the worst failures in his pathetic saga have not come from him, or the Magic organization, but rather whoever is representing him. I think agents have begun to feel that advising their clients to stir up turmoil and pressure within an organization can ultimately get them what they want. Maybe, but at what price?

  • T-Money

Perhaps Orlando should also wonder why SVG tops the least liked coach poll every year.

  • ripslam

    here. we. go…. AGAIN

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

    Well I’ll be damned…

  • jay

something fishy about this, someone from the Magic camp keeps on “leaking” this info. may be to tarnish Dwight’s image so no other team comes near him, thus he stays put. Obviously Dwight is not helping either, but if true…a very slimy & below the belt move.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Fair enough Bet, I just don’t think Stan is that bad of a coach. He’s excellent at getting teams to do more than they look like they could on the surface. If they had a Paul Westphal coaching the Magic, they’d be lucky to grab an 8 th seed this year.

  • AsadSaleh3

If he was smart, he would have let the trade to NJ go through. Most of this mess would have been adverted. Instead, he’s being shown to be the biggest diva in basketball. I love how SVG has handled this. Dwight needs to be a man and own up to what he’s said. SVG knows that whether it’s Orlando or somewhere else, he will be coaching in the NBA next season. Great coach. He held it together while this mess was going on up until the end of the season.

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

Caboose, I cosign 100% that a conventional coach like Paul Westphal (who has a ring but is not better than Van Gundy)wouldn’t be able to do much with this group. That is the problem. Otis over payed for a bunch of Van Gundy system players. Besides Ryan Anderson, who is a third option at best, Dwight has no consistent help. Jameer Nelson has statically regressed for the past 3 years. J-Rich and Hedo arent the players they once were. Von Wafer/Q-Rich/JJ Reddick/Glen Davis/and the rest of the roster are all fringe guys who vary in production every game. When assessing blame, you have to look at who put this group together and why. For every good move Otis Smith made, he has done 2-3 bad ones. And he did them all for Van Gundy. Something’s gotta give.

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

*I got Westphal mixed up with Paul Westhead. My bad. He still isnt a better coach tho. FUN FACT: Magic Johnson got Paul Westhead fired. Is he an awful person too?

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

MJ got Doug Collins fired. Burn him at the stake! Shaq and D-Wade got….Stan Van Gundy fired. They lost the ‘worst person in the world’ contest (they cancelled each other out in the voting process)that year to Saddam Hussein. But they got a consolation prize of championship rings.

  • riggs

this has been reported as false. Come on slam.

  • everynowhere

i hope the report about d12 needing surgery is false. USA team will miss the easy baskets.

  • AsadSaleh3

Shaq got Van Gundy fired, never heard anything about Wade being involved.

  • http://www.huwlhopkins.com #6marjon

what a prick YOU’RE AN EMPLOYEE DWIGHT. EMPLOYEE.

  • BRYANT BYNUM GASOL 24 17 16

Who cares. I said this before. Dwight to the wizards for John wall. Dwight dwells in a awful team and the magic get a future top ten PG.

  • Justin G.

Adelman has had bad luck with talent? Isn’t it fair to say he would have a ring too if it weren’t for MJ (and Isiah)? So would Paul Westphal (I know you mixed them up but it’s true). Yes, Magic got Westhead fired and yes he was considered the bad guy at the time. People might be able to forget about this later as winning tends to make people forget rather quickly, but at this very moment he is still the d-bag causing all the drama.

  • CJ

    RIP Dwight Howard
    RIP Magic

  • DukeFromDeep

My opinion of Howard gets lower every time he opens his mouth. Keep yapping dog!

  • FLIGHT 9

Shut up Dwight Coward and play!!!

  • DreDay

Fire Otis Smith!! Never trust a Man with NO MUSTACHE!!

  • Red Star

Nothing but a bunch of Divas in the league now! LMFAO

  • http://www.yahoo.com berkamore

Well, wouldnt’ it be something if the Magic went far into the playoffs WITHOUT Howard and WITH Van Gundy? If that happened, it would make for an interesting summer in the Magic Kingdom. LOL.

  • The Great Mambino

Just another really disgusting chapter in Dwight’s horrible imitation of LeBron’s 2010 season and offseason. Isn’t it amazing how much damage these guys do in trying to “improve their brand”? It’s like they don’t understand that people WANT them to be great, and it doesn’t really have anything to do with their situation, but it’s how they play. We wrote more here ( http://thegreatmambino.blogspot.com/2012/04/bron-to-dwight-and-back-again-south.html ), but overall just a really gross situation
