Report: Ray Allen Was Nearly Traded to the Memphis Grizzlies

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

Earlier this season, the Boston Celtics were seen by most as dead men walking, an aging, depressing team to watch, that seemed destined for an ugly end. And that was indeed nearly the case, before the Celtics somehow pulled themselves together, and forcefully interjected themselves back into the championship hunt with an impressive post All-Star break surge.

Despite his naked willingness to shake up the roster, Celtics GM Danny Ainge has gotten credit for keeping it intact, as the team looks to make a deep Playoff run.

According to a Yahoo! Sports report, however, this Boston squad was on the verge on being broken up, before a Trade Deadline Day deal fell through:

As the NBA trade deadline lurched into its final hour a month ago, league sources say the call Ray Allen long feared had come: Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers was on the line, telling him he had been traded. Allen had been sent to the Memphis Grizzlies for a package including O.J. Mayo and a draft pick, and the Celtics’ Big Three had come to a most brusque ending. For 20 minutes or so, Allen had to process the information. They traded me to Memphis? And yet, as the disappointment dissolved to anger, Rivers returned with a messenger’s nightmare: Never mind. The deal fell apart. Take a deep breath and let’s go back to work again.

Before the Big Three could make it past the trade deadline, Allen-to-the-Grizzlies had to fall apart and discussions on a deal that would have sent Paul Pierce to the New Jersey Nets for an expiring Mehmet Okur contract and a lottery pick never reached completion, league sources said. Celtics general manager Danny Ainge loves the talent in the 2012 NBA draft, but he still gets one more run, one more chance with this group in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Ray Allen, currently nursing an ankle injury, has reportedly gotten over the shock and anger of being almost traded, and has grudgingly accepted his new sixth man role.

The Boston Celtics’ Big Four of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen are poised to go into postseason battle for what is very likely the last time together. They must make the most of what was nearly ripped apart just a month ago.

    Hes no Lamar Odom………..

  • http://zogs.ca zogs

oj need to be traded he has 20ppg potential

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

Okur and a lottery pick for Pierce sounds really bad, but the more I think about it, the better it sounds for a soon-to-be-rebuilding Celtics team.

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

Danny Ainge tries to trade everyone on that team all the time. How is this news?

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

As much as i like Ray that would have been a good move for the Cs. I think Doc can get OJ where he needs to be. But there is no way in he ll they should trade PP, he deserves to retire a Celtic.

  • dsleepy

consummate pro. doesn’t quit on a team like LO. this makes me an even bigger fan of his, the way he handled it and still reports to work. Ainge is getting too trigger-happy. They threw away a really good shot at a chip by trading perk.

  • Too_Nice21

@zogs potential 20ppg? He’s already done that his rookie year…I agree, I love Ray but that Wilde been a good deal for the Celtics. Good for both sides

the team hasnt been the same since tony allen left (one of my favorite celtic)

Lamar odom read this and said to his wife come here babboon look at this headline! WTF

  • http://espn.go.com/nba/ Paul H

Co-sign 23, If this report Is to believed Allen deserves a lot of credit for just putting his head down and balling (that and accepting his new bench role without so much as a grimace or ego-driven comment). Good for you Jesus.

Would of been a good trade for the celtics imo, acquire young talent to build around Rondo.

They were going to trade The Truth to New Jersey for Okur and some picks? Pierce had beed loyal to the franchise before the big three (four) were assembled back when he was taking loss after loss. I guess it is a business.

  • LA Huey

Ainge would trade Auerbach’s tombstone if he could get a lottery pick for it.

  • Rainman

    ^ lol

  • toinefan88

I don’t like either of those ideas. Ainge needs to be banned from trying to make trades. Trading Kendrick was a terrible move.

  • RickyRude

What’s the point of posting these “was nearly traded” reports? They weren’t traded so why bother… could’ve, would’ve, should’ve…

  • Dub

That Pierce trade is Horrible regardless of how deep is draft is. Not only should he be given the honour of retiring a Celtic but he’s still a Top 15 player. Ainge got lucky, the Mayo trade however could have been a good look

  • Heals

@Ricky, I hear ya. It’s funnier to see people complain about these trades. News flash folks they didn’t happen. I also love how most just assume DA was pushing to get these deals done and not that the other teams were the ones initiating talks/leaking rumors. Same with the Rajon hype, it was mostly other teams asking then leaking that they “asked” to better their position for the trade that wasn’t going to happen to begin with. Yeah Ainge sucks if only we had kept Baby instead of getting Bass…

  • Cameron

@Heals…what has Big Baby done for the Magic this year? He’s horrible now. Getting Brandon Bass was one of DA’s better moves. He just better not trade PP though.

  • ab40

A true class act. Ray Allen deserves a lot of respect for this. Mentaly that takes a lot out of you and for him to be locked in again and getting ready for the playoffs. I take my hat of to that.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

american me reference in commets, didn’t get that one

  • Heals

@Cam, c’mon man read the entire comment before questioning it. If you had then maybe the sarcasm would’ve been a bit more obvious…

  • dannyb

I was very surprised that the Cs weren’t blown up at the trade deadline. Now we know why. Gotta hand it to these players, they are true professionals. Take some notes Lamar.

  • Shifty

Hearing ya heals. I would of been absolutely ripped in my stomach if they traded Jesus. I like mayo though. But the truth getting traded……..come on. I would hate DA if he did that. And I think he would lose a lot of fans for a time I think. PP34 deserves to retir a Celtic. I think with rondos ability to make people around him get great looks at the basket would allow mayo to flourish. Their is a reason why the clerics beat players are shooting good fg percentages…..and it’s rondos passing.

  • blackthought

trading paul pierce is a distraction. give one more run. then build around rondo, and keep pierce and retire him a celtic, owns it.

  • vtrobot

I wouldn’t like it, but can understand the (almost) Ray trade, but that Pierce trade? DA, please slow it down. PP, Celtic for life. What Big Baby?

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

Considering that Perk was gonna walk at the end of the season, I don’t think it was that horrible of a trade. Who knew Jeff Green would end up missing the season, or all the new bigs they signed would get hurt?

  • js

Mayo would have been a great sign. The Pierce trade? Awful.

  • tavoris

this would have positioned the Celtics with only Avery Bradley and Rondo on the team after this season…they could have bought the Western Conference All-Star team with all that cap room.

  • ripslam

I hate Danny Ainge. Your franchise guy, the dude who stuck it out with you for a decade, through stabbings and 17-win seasons, for a draft pick and a scrub?
I’m glad that trade didn’t go through. Ray Allen is a perfect fit for the Celtics, no matter how old his birth certificate says he is. The man is ageless. Boston always struggles during the middle of the season and puts it all together going into the playoffs. Big ups to Ray-Ray for being so grown up about it.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

OJ Mayo is a poor man’s Kobe, he has the skill, but will never get to his full potential playing with Gay and Zack. Celtics should have made this trade and got OJ. OJ can play, I can’t wait until he gets a real chance to ball every-night. BOOK IT!!

  • Kel

It’s hard to trust this, especially when they say that they were gonna trade Pierce, who’s been playing extremely well and is a franchise player, for aging Okur. The Ray trade is much more likely. But either way, be glad it didn’t happen. Ray will hit some crucial clutch shots in the playoffs. Count on it. Ray is so under-appreciated. He’s still a great player. And he has intangibles the likes of Mayo will never possess.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCJwoEHRU_A&feature=related TheKid

Grudgingly accepted his new 6th man role? Ray Allen came to Doc and suggested he move back to come off the bench. In fact, they discussed it quite lengthily in an interview with Doc during a game on ESPN a while ago. Get you facts right.

  • Matt Park

You know what? I sincerely hope the Celtics have an insane playoff run and win the title this year. It’s just… something about the heart that the team seems to have found that makes me root for them. As a basketball fan, I can’t help but have respect for the Celts, even if I did hate them.

  • http://slamonline.com raylan

Those trades will work well for the rebuilding C’s.
If they went down, C’s would have 4 1st round draft picks next year.
1 of those picks will be lottery pick from the Nets.

  • Justin G.

cosign TheKid…You know, it’s reporting like this that makes me question a lot of the validity of their stories. Saying Allen grudgingly accepted his new role is so inaccurate it’s ridiculous. I do love how Ainge trades for Allen and Garnett, wins a championship, is loved by Celtic fans for putting the team together, then gets ripped when he trades a guy who was leaving anyway and now the fans are asking for his job.

  • TP

Trading Ray Allen would be 10 times dumber than trading Kendric Perkins. It seems to me that the only “talented” thing that Danny Ainge has ever done as GM is get the Big Three together.

Also, the Celtics are going to take down either Chicago or Miami in the playoffs – just like they took down Ceveland with LeBron and Shaq 2 years ago. Don’t be surprised when it happens!

  • matt

I always think it’s funny when people talk about players not being loyal and not caring for a team and winning and all that, but why would they when even most franchise players don’t get the respect and the loyalty of a team commited to them? … still classy from ray ray and the truth to show up and deliver

  • melvissa

Thanxs GOD-that wasnt happening. Grizzs dont need snobs

  • Mack

Trading Ray Allen is a stretch, trading KG would be stupid, but above all else trading Paul Pierce would be a tragedy; this guy is one of the top 8 Boston Celtics ever, you just don’t trade a guy who’s been there his whole career.
