Jeff Van Gundy Blasts Orlando Magic for Handling of Stan Van Gundy’s Firing

Jeff Van Gundy can’t help but be brutally honest about all things NBA, and fans love him for it. Given the ugly mess in Orlando involving his brother Stan, JVG savaged the Magic front-office for how poorly they handled the entire affair. Per ESPN Radio, via SRI: “Your thoughts on your brother’s dismissal as coach of the Orlando Magic? What is the future of your brother Stan Van Gundy moving forward? ‘As you just said his coaching is beyond approach, so he doesn’t need me to defend him. At the same time teams throughout professionals sports they change coaches. Now how you go about it is important. For him to have been in the office all day and the President, Alex Martins, knows that he is there and let them leave and then he calls him on the phone to fire him? It’s unprofessional. It’s unprofessional. To hide behind the fact or try to make everyone believe that Dwight Howard didn’t have a part in this is absurd. Say listen we fired this guy because we know this our best chance to keep Dwight Howard. Dwight Howard and I decided to fire him. To do anything else is playing a game of semantics. It really is. Third at the press conference that they hold to be going on and on how difficult of a day it is for you personally Alex Martins to fire people? He does this every time he fires somebody at the Magic with countless disregard at how it impacts people that he just fired. Now my brother is fine financially, but he has uprooted so many other lives that to force…you want sympathy and empathy because you have it hard? Countless disregard for what normal Americans are going through. He’s fired many people there and he always comes up with the same thing that it’s been a tough day on me without any regards for their feelings. Finally and this is the biggest one to me he said that my brother is the finest ‘X and O’ coach he has been around in his 25 years in the business. Okay listen [Alex Martins] all you have done in your 25 years in the business is release press releases and run the business side. You don’t know if a ball is blown up or stuffed. You don’t know if the pick and roll coverage on the side is right or wrong. Just say that I have no knowledge about basketball. It’s offensive when someone who has no knowledge about basketball even in a positive comment tries in those ways to sort of negate what Brian Hill did as a coach or what Matt Guokas did as a coach. He doesn’t know one thing about basketball so please hold off your comments on my brothers expertise since you know nothing about basketball.’”

JVG is scrappy. We all knew that since the time he held on to Mourning’s leg.

eff the van gundys. i’m tired of their whining.

I certainly agree that Stan is one of the top X’s and O’s coaches and I really like him as a coach. However, I lost some respect for him when he said “Players just need to do their job” and “they don’t have to like me”. Like I have said before, I have seen players pass out on a dead run for their coach (Matt Frier/Bobby Bowden) and I believe a great coach can empower an average player and make him a champion. In all the media frenzy, I think Stan lost sight of that and needed a fresh start.

I love the NBA’s Mario brothers.

Look here JVG… I respect you and SVG as great coaches and I am a Magic fan for 20 years and I don’t agree with the Magic on letting SVG go but you know and he knows and everyone knows….This is the nature of the beast.. This is what you signed up for when you and your brother decided to become coaches in the NBA. Sorry that your kids have to switch schools when you get fired…Sorry that your wife has to house shop in a new town when you get fired but this is the way it is… Owning an NBA team is a business. The owners of the business have the right to fire anyone, anytime for any reason PERIOD! SVG still gets paid…And he gets a much needed vacation from all that NBA business BS!

Van Gundy brothers go hard in the paint.

Not a fan of JVG but as a local longtime cracker in the melting pot of the unemployed, O-Town – - he is on the money about the Magic. As a fan it was a painful year to watch big baby (and I don’t mean the new guy from Celtic land) cry all year and ultimately ruin the season despite a valiant effort from a Dwight less team in the 1st round. The way the “tragic” crumbled to baby boy was sickening.

Yes, DW is a gamer and arguably one of the best in the league but he filled the entire town for 8 years. He has it made here, the media pretty much shelters him. Do you think he would have gotten a pass in NYC or Jersey if he had a out of wedlock kid up there? They buried it here and rightfully so, but that is not how the fish wraps play in the big city. He is just another bad example of the “me, myself & I” generation of the worst business model sports league, the NBA.

Limited rosters, gauranteed money for a bunch of spoiled rotten kids who have been pampered since prep school with no pain going thru a minor league system (and if any college). SVG deserved better but good for him, he gets paid for a year to watch ball. What most people don’t realize is just how much SVG did in the community behind the doors and cameras. He was a quality guy who did cater to baby boy and made no bones about it. Refreshing to me, but not good if you have a bench full of entailed multimillionaires who don’t like be told how to play.

    Good luck SVG.

I completely agree with JVG. Whiny or not, and irrespective of whether SVG deserved to fired or not, it is utter b.s. o come out and lie blatantly about how hard of a job it is to fire such an amazing coach and pretend that doing so has completely nothing to do with Dwight Howard’s impending future. Maybe even get choked up about it and have to hold back tears. This is the equivalent of a Clipper flop in the public relations world.

  • vctmac

BLASTED, alex martin shud jus take tht in and have a good day.
he shud go assistant for knicks and help them improve their defense.

  • LA Huey

Did y’all know JVG got his pink slip from the Rockets via phone call during a baseball game he was attending? Just a fun fact.

    Joey Crawford is Bowser right?

  • IamYOU

I bet JVG loss all his remaining hair after that comment.

  • Jay

What is funny, is they fired van gundy and they still are going to lose Howard. He
    is a coach killer.

  • Brotha Earth

Lol! Orlando Magic is a joke. They will embarrass themselves to all lengths to TRY to keep Dwight….WHO IS LEAVING. They fired a good coach n if they don’t get Nate MacMillan, then they ain’t even upgrading anyways. Then they invite Shaq for their gm position cuz….*drum roll* Dwight wants it LMAO!!!! This WILL get ugly…

  • http://www.sportsgrid.com/media/shaq-kobe-highlights/ shutup

To get fired via phone call is so bullsh!t, I miss the duo of JVG and Marc Jackson, two of the best announcers imo.

  • thor

@Erik, did you even read the article?

“As you just said his coaching is beyond approach, so he doesn’t need me to defend him. At the same time teams throughout professionals sports they change coaches. Now how you go about it is important”

I think he is pretty aware that being fired is part of nba business.
I totally agree with JVG. It’s about how you approach a situation.

  • MikeC.

    @shutup – Mark Jackson? Word?

  • http://www.yahoo.com keep it real

Blah blah blah…. Cry cry cry…. How many jerseys will svg sell? How many tickets will svg sell. Dwight 10000x more important to the franchise. Who coached shaq in Orlando????? Jvg taking up for his brother prob cost himself future coaching jobs. His resume is dated and now he talking $hit about owners. Yeah he better get used to announcing.

  • http://www.slamonline.com phsyco B

@keep it real. your a d*$k. I don’t think JVG wants to coach again any time soon and he’s already used to announcing. He’s the best announcer going at the moment. Douche.

Cry me a river. Dear God!

  • Yep

@keep it real — yeah you’re 100% correct, coaches in sports don’t matter and don’t make a difference at all. why does that job even exist? just get the best players and they’ll win.

without a first option guard it doesn’t matter what svg did with that lineup

  • robb

lol Dwight is gonna leave anyway

  • LA Huey

shutup, you and I are part of a small minority that enjoyed the Breen/Jackson/JVG broadcasting triumvirant. From I’ve seen on blogs and hoops websites, folks disliked them.

  • HiDef

@shutup and LA Huey, add me to that minority. Those guys are/were a perfect blend of passion, humour and savvy analysis.

  • Chump Caller

He was spot-on. If you don’t know what you’re talking about, ADMIT IT and tell us what you do KNOW. Martins played that like a chump.

  • SMIK

who read this article in JVG voice? i did, it was so much more funnier lol

  • http://facebook.com/tronjohnson Chief

@erik this isn’t the everyday firing of a coach, this is a coachkiller and gm killer having an effect on an owner. Effectively your Magic are run by a 6’11 AAU Phenom who got handled by Pau in a finals series. This is unparalleled in the history of the NBA. So flustered is your owner he threw around the idea of making Shaq GM. Now not only is the team with the worst name in the history of the nba still stuck with that name, they have no coach, no direction and the same owner.

  • http://Somethingsomething. Ugh

Hmm. JVG gets paid for words but doesn’t know it’s “beyond reproach”, not “beyond approach”. Hmm.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2012/05/jeff-van-gundy-blasts-orlando-magic-for-handling-of-stan-van-gundys-firing/ thePhoenix

@Ugh, I initially thought the same, but I double checked and it was an interview on Espn radio. So it’s possible that his words were just transcribed incorrectly…unless he actually pronounced it “approach” in which case you’re right. I didn’t hear the interview to know.

  • http://www.nba.com danfields

gotta love the van gundy bros. i hope they bring one of them in at ny in case woodson (lets all hope that wont be the case) chokes next season.

  • 1tail

Funny how people feel their opinions are facts. JVG needs to shut up. He walked out on the knicks mid practice, got a hot dog, n never returned.

  • http://www.sportsgrid.com/media/shaq-kobe-highlights/ shutup

@Ugh reproach was the correct word. re·proach/riˈprōCH/
Address (someone) in such a way as to express disapproval or disappointment. You cant actually approach a non physical entity such as his coaching ability. @La I wish the competition committee would listen too Van Gundy’s ideas.

  • http://www.sportsgrid.com/media/shaq-kobe-highlights/ shutup

Oh my fault misread your comment. You were correct carry on………lol

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

Between the 2 Van Gundy’s are 2 big egos and 0 rings. JVG needs to fall back and SVG needs to see if his brother can hook him up with a job.

  • http://Somethingsomething. Ugh

    @shutup – Haha.

  • Justin G.

Anyone else hoping SVG joins Breen and JVG on the sidelines next year?
