Dwight Howard on Stan Van Gundy Firing: ‘I Had Nothing to Do With it’

Stan Van Gundy came out and publicly declared that he knew his star player was trying to get him fired. A month later, the Orlando Magic relieved SVG of his duties. But according to Dwight Howard, this had nothing to do with Dwight Howard. From TMZ: “Orlando Magic superstar Dwight Howard says he had nothing to do with the team’s decision to fire head coach Stan Van Gundy. ‘I hate to see anyone lose their job.’ Howard — who’s still rehabbing from back surgery in L.A. — was out in Beverly Hills [Thursday] morning when we asked how he felt about his coach’s recent termination. ‘Me and Stan, we had our ups and downs but for the most part we had one goal, to win a championship in Orlando, but we fell short.’ When asked about speculation that he had a role in the decision to can Stan, Howard said, ‘I’m glad [Orlando Magic CEO Alex Martins] confirmed I had nothing to do with it.’ Howard is also concerned about an interview scheduled to air on ESPN [Friday] night — telling us it was shot back in April … and insists the content is ‘old and inaccurate.’ Though Howard didn’t say which part of the interview he was referring to specifically, he did warn, ‘A lot of stuff has changed since then.’”

We don’t believe you, Dwight. You need more people!

  • Travis

He is a disgrace. He should be ashamed.

  • FnF

I completely agree Dwight. Since when has demanding a trade because you don’t like the coaching or talent level and effort displayed by your teammates on a nightly basis ever been linked to a coach getting fired? Since when does demanding that changes need to be made within the organization literally mean that the coach must be fired? Not like Dwight has randomly thrown people under the bus. Dwight didn’t hand SVG his pink slip.

  • def80s

Wonder how many boos he’s gonna receive next year, whoever he plays for..

  • LP

@FNF if you think Dwight didn’t have a hand in SVG’s firing, you are blind … HE went to upper management and “suggested” changes that would make him more likely to stay…”Get rid of Coach, and I will stay. If he stays, I’m more likely to leave.” That’s called throwing your coach under the bus, and getting your coach fired. not to mention, SVG was told this… happens ALL THE TIME (ref. Anthony/Knicks/D’Antoni)

lets just boycott all d howard articles until the trade deadline passas in 2013, and pretend he doesn’t exist except for the nights that he is actually playing

Can you be mad at him for wanting changes tho?
I mean, that franchise was going nowhere after last years playoffs..

One would have to be naive to think Dwight would return with Van Gundy still as head coach.
That is what he wanted, so that is what he got.
A superstar who gets his way. What else is new?

Cool off on FnF. Its called sarcasm.

Dwight: It wasn’t me (Shaggy voice).

  • LA Huey

He says as he sips a Diet Pepsi. Man, we’re going to look back at that as a classic moment in sports history.

    Lol @Marc

  • FnF

@LP, Sources familiar with Dwight’s thinking would tell you that “changes that will make him more likely to stay” could be as simple as trading for his friends (Josh Smith) or as complex as installing a phone booth for him to change prior to games. The rest of us can only assume that he was referring to a change of coach. Even with that, it is a he said she said kind of thing since Dwight & the Van Gundy brothers have conflicting reports. Oh well, the world may never know.

  • http://Somethingsomething. Ugh

LA Huey: Totally. That Diet Pepsi is going to be in there with “Practice?!” and Shaq’s “Keep the kids on drugs” in the NBA hall of infamy. Should be given equal screentime with “Havlicek stole the ball” and “Give the ball to Michael and get the %$^& out of the way.”

Hmmm… Jury is still out on Dwight. I think he could fast become THE most over rated player in the L…

Does anyone think it’s going to be absolutely silly if Jerry Sloan coaches the Bobcats next season…they win ANY number of games greater than their abysmal performance this season…and they hand him the token ‘ROY’ award…. such a sham that award has become.
