LeBron James Blames the Referees for Haslem, Pittman Suspensions

The Miami Heat will be short-handed tonight, as they look to eliminate the Indiana Pacers. That wouldn’t be the case, according to LeBron James, had the refs simply ejected Tyler Hansbrough after he committed his flagrant foul on Dwyane Wade. Per the Sun-Sentinel: “James said had Pacers forward Tyler Hansbrough been immediately cited for a Flagrant 2 foul Tuesday and ejected for his hard hit on Dwyane Wade, then there would have been no retaliation foul from Udonis Haslem. Hansbrough instead was cited for a Flagrant 1 foul, which allowed him to remain in the game. The NBA later upgraded the violation to a Flagrant 2 foul, which would have mandated immediate ejection. Fifty-seven seconds after Hansbrough’s hard foul, Haslem committed his hard foul on Hansbrough, which resulted in Haslem being suspended for Game 6. Haslem’s foul also was upgraded after the fact to a Flagrant 2 violation. While Flagrant 2 violations result in immediate ejection, they do not automatically result in ensuing suspension, which is a league-office decision. ‘If there was a Flagrant 2 to start with,’ James said, ‘then U.D. would have never fouled him, which means U.D. never would have got suspended. I mean Hansbrough, it’s not the first time that he went after one of our players this year. We have two guys suspended and basically they have no one suspended.’ Heat backup center Dexter Pittman also was suspended, for three games, after being called for a Flagrant 1 in Game 5 that also was upgraded by the NBA office. James said he had no doubt that Hansbrough’s blow to Wade’s head, which drew blood, should have resulted in immediate ejection. ‘He definitely wasn’t going for the ball,’ he said. ‘All you’ve got to do is look at the play and see exactly where he was headed for. He walked right away. He knew exactly what he had done. We just got a free throw and the ball on the side.’”

I agree with LeBron, if the refs sent a message early by tossing Wade out of game Game 2, it would never have come to this.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Hansborough’s foul was the softest of all three. He also was going for the ball. D-Wade just brought the ball back behind his head which Hansborough followed through and ended up hitting him in the head because of. I think that Haslem should not have been suspended though. Pittman is the only one that deserved a suspension.

League needs to change the rule so refs can video review any flagrant. Right now, they can only review F2s. Also, as a ref, if there’s any doubt, why wouldn’t you just assess a F2, since you can review it instantly and downgraded it to a F1 if warranted?

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

^agreed, that needs to be changes

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Wade should’ve gotten tossed quickfast like Ramadan. But come on, Bron-Bron, you seriously think that Hansbrough’s foul on Wade was a F2? Son got ALL BALL before coming down on Wade’s grill. Wade got all spine on Colison and Haslem got all shoulder. The more this man tries to rationalize his teammates actions the more I want the Pacers to win… and I don’t even want the Pacers to win!

  • pLaYz

yeah he wasnt saying anything to the refs when wade laid out collison like a safety in the NFL not going for the ball at all..maybe if collison flopped like lebron and act like he was dead on the floor or something wade wouldve been ejected. the refs this series been letting alot of stuff slide even elbows from lebron we’ll see how tight they call it now

  • KING

Stop complaining Lebron, you know your team fucked up by fouling the pacers in that kind of way… haslem should’ve been ejected right away after that foul… and pittman sloppy ass shouldnt even been on the game.. but i guess they all want to protect their “QUEEN”… GRanger keep it up!!! keep gettin on lebrick face everytime… he is just bark bark but no bite bite hahaha

  • barnabusb

I hope tonight’s game doesn’t turn into a whistle fest with 100 free throws for each team.

  • AiRsMiTh

Lol, @ O, ” The more this man tries to rationalize his teammates actions the more I want the Pacers to win… and I don’t even want the Pacers to win”. I find your statement to be extremely agreeable.

  • http://www.twitter.com/_dfrance dfrance21

Perfect instance for LeBron to say “the league has made their decision, and we just have to accpet it.”

  • LA Huey

Haha. Why would LBJ say Wade should get tossed/suspended for the Collison foul? Who the hell lobbies for their own teammate to recieve a harsher penalty? Besides, who cares about Wade’s flagrant. Didn’t help Miami get a ‘W’ in Game 2 and he didn’t even show up for Game 3. So it really didn’t affect anything. Unless you think the Pacers have Brontosaurus reaction times and responded 3 games later to Wade’s hit.

When you have bad cable, you get frustrated. When you get frustrated, your game suffers. When your game suffers, you yell at your coach. When you yell at your coach, your team loses. When you lose, the games get chippy. When games get chippy, Tyler Hansborough fouls you flagrantly. Do not get fouled flagrantly by Tyler Hansborough. Switch to Dish, DWade!

You do know that MIA has been reduced to what is possibly the worst frontcourt in the history of the playoffs. Of course LeBron is complaining and he has every right to do so.

  • Mike Mihalow

This is not the behavior of an MVP.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

It is the referee’s fault. their job is to control the game. As soon as they let the Hansbrough foul go (so to speak) all h*ll was and did break loose. I don’t really think LeBron should have said as much. But it’s true. The refs control the game and set the tempo in terms of aggression. If they are letting it get too physical then it’s going to get too physical.
    .
But anyway, kudos to Nick Tha Quick. lol

  • DruNyce

These are the kinda of quotes that make LBJ a joke.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

nbk, but Udonis and Pittman took it to another level. Basically Hansborough’s foul was what they were saying they were going to permit as the high end of hard fouls. Udonis and Pittmans were on another level. the refs treated them accordingly.
It’s not the referee’s fault that the Heat decided they needed to escalate the fouls to harder fouls than the one Tyler did. The ref’s essentially said they would permit hard plays and hard fouls, but not dangerously hard ones.
Hansborough wasn’t “too physical” he was just maximum allowed physicality. Udonis and Pittman’s were next level dangerous plays.
I just don’t think Bron should be saying anything about this IMO. It’s whatever though.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Lakeshow, would you stop saying Haslem and Pittman’s fouls are on the same level. Haslem’s foul was much closer to Hansbrough’s than Pittman’s. I understand that Haslem fouled Hansbrough harder than Hansbrough fouled Wade…but WE HAVE REPLAY!! Haslem doesn’t. In the heat of a game, to them, those two fouls probably felt like the severity was the same. Especially considering Tyler drew blood and Haslem didn’t.
    .
Pittman’s foul is not related to that, Pittman was sent out as a henchman. He deserves his suspension (actually he deserves more of a suspension).
    .
Haslem should probably have been booted from game 5, but he shouldn’t have been suspended for game 6. And the referee’s set the precedent for the ultra hard foul that Haslem retaliated with. Again, we have replay, so we can discern which foul was worth. During the game, for the player’s on the court, that wasn’t an option.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Mmmh, but I didn’t say that. I said that their fouls were both on another level above Hansborough’s, not that Haslem and Pittman’s were on the same level. Here lemme do ‘ye’ old numbered scale’ with a 0-10 rating system:
    Hansborough’s hard foul: 6
    Udonis hard foul: 7.5
    Pittman’s: 9.5
Hence why I said I didn’t think that Haslem and Hansborough should be suspended and Pittman should.
I understand what your saying about how Udonis and how he was only trying to recreate that same foul for the most part, but he did just take it a little further and didn’t go for the ball in the process.
We both know that “going for the ball” plays a huge part in what the ref’s are going to call. If they deem something a basketball related play(ie, hard foul resultant from a high mid air blocked shot as opposed to someone trying to just harm someone without making any basketball related play, but hindsight(Instant replay) is 20-20 and i’m not really trying to prove anything. Just that LBJ is comparing apples and oranges a little bit.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Do y’all think if the refs ejected Haslem after that foul the League still would have suspended him?

  • Seamus D. Dog

I freaking hate the Heat, but reluctantly I have to agree w LeBron. Hansborough is a hatchet man. He is way better at it than Haslem and the other guys obviously.

  • http://SLAMONLINE.COM Gab

Pittmans is an obvious suspension. but does that mean that all flagrant 1′s are suspensions and if yes why is hansboro not suspended?

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

Stop your b!tching people, the Heat are destined to win it all, whether they are the best team or not, Stern just wants it to go to a game 7 for the TV ratings. Wake up people, this sh!t still happens.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

No JTaylor, I do not. No matter what the case LBJ is right; the refs are to do if nothing else, ref. The ‘shot and ball on the side’ pretty much warranted the Heat players to collectively say ‘WORD SON?… AIGHT, WATCH THIS !@#$.’

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    JTaylor, NO.

  • GeraldHenderson

Get me on the heat, I know how to treat Tyler. I don’t like to punch girls, but I’ll make an exception for Tyler.

  • Heals

I was already to agree with LBJ, then I read that he started with the idea that if only PsychoT had been ejected all would’ve been cool and had to laugh. Naw BronBron, Pittman’s a goon (and a dumb one at that) and Haslem should’ve been booted as well. If Haslem missed the rest of Gm5 he would then be eligible for tonight. I thought that’s where he was going to go with this…

  • Heals

    Nice one NickTQ…

  • Riggs

    wow lebron is a moron.

  • robb

    @LakeShow I agree

  • lavern

I cannot believe James of all people is talking about fouls. Miami, especially James and wade are noted for their fouls. Elbows, throws, pushing. Beside Memphis, they are the dirties team playing. They are going to hurt someone bad one of these days. I am not saying the other teams should do what they do, but if you cant take it, stop dishing it out.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

    NTQ FTW!

  • Jerome

Wade will probably open-palm smush Hansborough next game and not get suspended.

  • MikeC.

This is how I see it:
Hansbrough – flagrant 1 (although it didn’t look like anything more than a regular hard foul to me, but the L is softer nowadays)
Haslem – flagrant 2, ejection, no suspension.
Pittman – flagrant 2, 1 game suspension for the elbow and another 5 for being stupid enough to wink and smirk on camera.

  • http://www.sportsgrid.com/media/shaq-kobe-highlights/ shutup

Well I think Wades foul on Collison should have led to an ejection or suspension, you know just to remain consistent and all. So lets call it a wash and play ball.

  • http://sdfjklc.com Jukai

Another interesting question: had Pittman not flying elbowed Lance in the f*cking neck, would Haslem still gotten suspended? I think the league may have given Haslem some leeway if the other incident hadn’t happened.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

Nah, don’t think so. I was surprised how quick psycho T got up. The average man would have suffered a broken collarbone.

  • http://plumpnatl@aol.com Robert McNeil

Im willing to bet that all you guys complaining about Lebron mad because your team is @ home watching the series instead of complaing. You guys act like girls, all you hear is complaints. I am so tired of it. If you are upset with Lebron talents take it to God, thats who gave him his abilities. For once stop HATING about things you cannot do anything about!!! So sad……

  • doublestandards

If you keep poking a bear eventually the bear going to strike back. You can make excuses for Tyler all you want, but his intentions was no different then haslem. He intended to hurt Miami star player to gain an advantage. Hence, thats why they kept trying to push buttons, to try and draw the reactions they wanted. Its funny how indiana try to bully miami and none of you folks said anything but the minute miami lashes out, they are the bad guys. Lebron should have said what he said cause its the truth. If the ref would have taken control of the game, instead of letting indiana tell them how to call the series, we wouldnt have this problem. You people want to keep yelling miami is floppers, lebron and wade gets fouled a lot and lot of them dont get called. Miami dont get the same calls as dallas, lakers or san antonio. What do that say about the league, that miami gotta flop before they get a foul. You folks hate miami so much that you embrace the unfairness miami faces. Thats whats so sad about all of this. So would you teach your child that its okay to be treated unfairly jubecause ppl dont like him/her? And that they shouldnt say anything because that wouldn’t be rationalize. Two wrongs don’t make a right, and double standards shouldn’t have a place in this league. And ppl shouldn’t make excuses for it, because their hate out weighs what’s right. Lbj I agree with you, stand up or if It’s left up to these ppl, you’ll stand down. Ppl wants to say dirty playing , yeah right, don’t blame Miami for your dirty thinking. So ppl when your children come home and tell you that the teacher watched as the bully striked him and when he tried to hit the bully back the school only suspended him. I want you to tell him only he should shut up and deal with the suspension because he deserves to get suspended because no one like him. And that his bully shouldn’t be suspended because his punch didn’t hurt as much yours.
