NY Post Writer Phil Mushnick Proposes Racist Nicknames for the Brooklyn Nets

We’ve had problems with racially-insensitive material written by the longtime NY Post columnist Phil Mushnick in the past, and it seems that the old man is still at it. In a rambling piece published today — while taking shots at minority team owner and rap mogul Jay-Z — Mushnick dreams up some horrible and downright racist nicknames for Brooklyn’s new NBA squad: “As long as the Nets are allowing Jay-Z to call their marketing shots — what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors to stress, as the Nets explained, their new ‘urban’ home — why not have him apply the full Jay-Z treatment? Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N——s? The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B—-hes or Hoes. Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way!”

If being a small business owner is a drain on society I’ll gladly take that title. My fam lives comfortably, and best of all I don’t have to answer to the likes of you. You keep being a leech on our culture and being jealous that your woman would most likely prefer me over you.

I think “pasty pale a)ss” qualifies as a slur.
And I not upset with you or Diesel or anyone else. And it was unlikely that any sort of consensus was every going to be reached no matter how the points were presented. I’ve been there and done that. Folks have entrenched beliefs that they are invested in believing. You’re not changing that, only God can change that in my opinion.
But, personally, I think turning to insults and slurs is just childish and revealing. I mean, when if you call women “b)itches) whenever you get upset with them, or homosexuals “f(ags) when you get upset with them, there is a problem. Same thing is true about the slurs for black folks and white folks and every one else.
The purpose of using those words is to wound and insult. Which gives lie to the whole farce that these words don’t really have that much power and are no big deal. When we want to insult, demean and hurt someone we turn right back to the old faithful words that we constantly like to say are no big deal.
It’s interesting to me. I’m not totally above it, but I am working on it because my personal belief in God has led me to understand that certain practices are a problem.
    But that’s just me.

I don’t think the goal should be being “acceptable.” I just try not to do things I wouldn’t want people to do to me. Golden Rule.
But that’s a personal belief system. Some folks see it as weak, I don’t. It’s really not a big deal. This is the internet. In some ways it’s good to see how people’s minds work in order to get a sense of what guides their opinions, but in other ways, having a flame war is kind of pointless. Been there, done that.

@Diesel: It costs a sh!tload of money to get an education in America, so hasn’t it occured to you that in an education system like that you’re pretty much buying your future?
Now guess who are richer in general, whites or blacks?
    …do you get it already?

You’re entitled to your opinion. I have extremely different views. When someone has a problem with a group of people because he/she is a racist, I really couldn’t care less about a Golden rule. I love who loves me, hate who hates me. I do both passionately, and without remorse. My commenting was initially aimed at the racists and hypocrites who saw no problem with the tabloid writer’s words. I took issue with the fact that some white dude thought it was okay to joke about “n#ggers” while getting angry at the white jokes. The black jokes are funny? Fine, I’ll do white jokes. What’s good for the goose should be good for the gander. If someone tries to tell me racial slur jokes towards whites are more offensive than the ones directed at black people, I’ll flame him accordingly. I do agree that the internet provides certain types of people with a forum to voice the kinds of opinions they hadn’t the courage to voice in person. The rest of you certainly have more experience navigating your “online friendships”, but I tend to comment on here the way I would if a similar conversation had taken place in person.

I think it’s fair to call that institutionalized racism, even tho it touches many whites too.

@EJ – Public school is free. And community colleges are inexpensive. And you can always take out student loans. You’re not going to get me with the school is expensive line. Like I’ve said before on here, I’m the child of European immigrants that came to America without speaking the language and with barely any money. They managed to make it just fine. And you don’t need an expensive education to do manual labor. If someone really wants to be successful and pushes themselves they can be. But the problem today is that most people grew up having everything handed to them…either by their parents or the government. They didn’t have to fight like our parents did. So now they waste their energy complaining. That’s white and black people. There’s trash of every race. Charlie is a prime example of that.

@ charlie: Did you used to post under the name “Zoom”? I’m almost positive it’s you, because there were similar conversations a long while ago (maybe 2-3 years?) on here. I always wondered where you went because I liked your posts. Also because I was a total liberal, whitewashed bullsh!tter back then, and now I’ve been slowly but surely decolonizing my mind. For lack of a better term.
Is my memory good or what, though? Hah.

Nah, but I definitely been reading the comments here about four to five days a week for over a year now. I commented a few times but I mainly just enjoyed reading the Post-Up and the debates there. I never read a brainwashed comment from you though lol. You pretty much equally apply the same logic towards all groups of people, something you don’t get enough credit for. Respect.

  • schmeeboo

Ironically, the owner of the Nets is an even bigger stereotype– Russian Oligarch with serious connections to the mob. Just imagine if Mushnick offended him?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

oh lol, alright then. Thanks man, respect to you too.

It’s funny that you think we have online friendships. I wouldn’t say that. I think that some cats seem like decent people, have interesting point of views, and I interact with them electronically.
And I think you are smart to decide how you want to carry yourself. I did the whole “Attack the racist” bit a long time ago. Try to prove to people using facts exactly what’s going on. I got tired of butting my head against the same wall. So now, I say stuff when I feel like it, but I remember that a LOT of people don’t really want to be hip to what’s going on, and will ignore facts if they don’t fit their narrative.
Also, I just don’t get much satisfaction from hurling insults across cyberspace.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

To be clear, I believe firmly in institutionalized racism and discrimination. I think the meritocracy myth is one of the biggest loads of crap in the world. I think bigotry comes in many colors, racism in American comes in one. And I think most folks don’t really have any interest in unpacking this countries economical and social history to find out exactly why some groups of people succeed more often then others.
So basically, online interactions mirror in person interactions except the anonymity of the internet makes it easier for people to hurl insults back and forth.
    Which is sad.

I don’t disagree with anything you said there.
