NY Post Writer Phil Mushnick Proposes Racist Nicknames for the Brooklyn Nets

We’ve had problems with racially-insensitive material written by the longtime NY Post columnist Phil Mushnick in the past, and it seems that the old man is still at it. In a rambling piece published today — while taking shots at minority team owner and rap mogul Jay-Z — Mushnick dreams up some horrible and downright racist nicknames for Brooklyn’s new NBA squad: “As long as the Nets are allowing Jay-Z to call their marketing shots — what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors to stress, as the Nets explained, their new ‘urban’ home — why not have him apply the full Jay-Z treatment? Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N——s? The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B—-hes or Hoes. Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way!”

I am willing to bet this guy has never criticized Donald Sterling in an article.

  • coggie13

If you call yourself something piublically do not be offended when someone else also does. This is a racist rant though. He sounds like a sad fool.

  • EJ

This kind of straightforwardness is actually kind of funny in the same way as a kick to the balls.
Not that I agree with anything he says tho.

  • Jono

Old people like that need to fall off the earth already.

  • Solito

As an sports team owner in the US, you don’t want your team to polarize in a limited market. Take the Utah Jazz for example. You don’t see to many dudes (of any ethnicity) rock their Merch in any type of urban scenario. You either love or hate them.
Same with the LA Raiders of the ’80s. As soon as NWA rocked their stuff, they were a “Gangster-Team” and so was all their Merch.
If I was the Nets owner, the only questions would be: how can I “Chicago Bulls” my team? Do I need a Jordan Area success to do so? Bulls stuff is not limited to any one sub-culture… or country, for that matter.
With Jay-Z, as successful he is, putting his signature on merchandise, you run the risk that his image will transcend on the whole team.
Personally I like the simple logos, and clean cut approach the Nets put out. I’m not so sure, though, if that even applies to half the folks in New Jersey.
I think that is the direction Mushnick was aiming for. But if you are a paid writer, you should be able to express yourself in a more tolerable way…

  • MikeC.

I wonder if the Nets will serve Pabst Blue Ribbon at their games? I bet the new uniform shirts will have a deep v-neck. A DEEP v-neck.

  • Mike from Spain

I might be ignorant of the issue, but for me it looks like the guy just played with Jay Z’s lyrics (maybe ignorantly). I saw it as mocking Jay Z and gangsta hip hop lyrics, and stupid because it touches too many sensitive spots. But I don’t see it as a racist attack or implying racist views. Maybe I am too charitable with the interpretation… In the same article he writes defending Amar’e and Tiger Woods. I don’t know, it does not look like a race hate rant to me.

  • Mike from Spain

And some of you cry out against race discrimination saying that old people have to die sooner… that’s another fine bit of inclusive non discriminating discourse, topped with death wishes. Ah, the irony

  • Greg

    To me, Jay stands for:
    1) Joining the illuminati
    2) Disrespecting women (oops, I meant to say B*&%%hes, Hoes etc
    3) Using drug money to build the ROC (he talks about in his songs all the time)
I could list more but I’m watching Frasier…

  • Brahsef

If you think it’s all about pimpin hoes and slammin cadillac doors
you probably a cracker, or a n***a that think he a cracker
    or maybe just don’t understand.

  • crooklyn

Just another racist bastard looking for any “angle” to fit in his devilish way of thinking. Not surprised coming from the same rag that had the infamous Obama editorial illustration.

  • ttc

    @Brahsef: yea, I’m an outcast too…

  • dan

oh please, as if any rich person in the usa or anywhere regardless of ethnicity would have ever gotten rich without getting his or hers hands dirty. thats just the nature of capitalism.

  • ChristianBulleN

My grandmother is a great woman.

Again if you think other people’s stupid behavior justifies your own stupid behavior then you are a mental midget.
Stop making stupid rationalizations for bad behavior.
And John F. Kennedy’s daddy was a drug dealer. Bootlegging=pushing weight.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

“Not anymore racist than when Jay says it” ROFL! I love when white people get all bent out of shape because they “don’t get to” say n***a. Why do black people get to say it! That’s so unfair!

  • http://abcnews.com charliewinning

Teddy on point as usual. I mean, that’s really the underlying issue. And Mike from Spain, let me just say that you don’t know a damn thing. A man from one of the most racist countries on Earth, (speaking from experience), speaking on what black people should and should not be offended by is hilarious to me. Speaking on race relations in a country from which you definitely are not is pretty bold. Not surprising though.

After reading the old dude’s article, I was appalled. After reading the comments, well, I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.

  • MeloMan15

I read somehwere that jay-z only wones about 10 % or less of the nets anyways… the fact that he thinks they chose those colors because of jay is ridiculous

  • Ldub

I dont understand why this guy is still allowed to write for the NY post. I guess ratings are more important. I was always raised by the rule of “be careful what you say”, because I am a representation of my family, friends and others. Even though I share/express my own thoughts/opinions, I make sure to add (IMO or “that is how I feel”). Point being…IDK how this dude is still employed…especially if they mentioned this isnt the first time. And who is the editor that allowed this to be published?

  • Ldub

AND…..for all of you who feel that Jay Z and the industry he decided to make “PART” of his career, is based on B!tches and H0es, as well as saying the N word in songs, you all are just plain ignorant. Sure he COULD use different words to express himself, but then so could ANYONE else that writes/raps or sings. Actors COULD take on different roles, Donald Trump COULD get a new hair piece. Point is, taking one aspect of someones life and trying to twist it and say “this is what the industry is all about” is totally wrong. Especially when you have a multi talented person such as Jay Z. Music, clothes, fragrances, producer, writer, owner, are some (and not all) that Jay Z is about. Well thats what he does to bring in his money….doesnt necessarily mean thats what hes ABOUT. ONLY Jay, and those closely associated to him KNOW what he is ABOUT! To even speak on what YOUR perception is is simply YOUR opinion. NOTHING MORE!

  • Wray

Shock journalism is wack. There is a definite difference between trying to prove a point and pissing people off.

  • http://www.thesmashbrothas.com zen garden

Since when was having money, women, and guns controversial in America?

  • Clipptown

    this guy is intense

  • http://www.thesmashbrothas.com zen garden

Do you think Ted Nugent doesn’t have guns, money and women (albeit dirty swamp ladies with B.O and a Confederate flag tattooed on their a$$)?

  • Nigaz In Paris

How stupid are you people? Jay z’s hit song is called nigz in paris. he talks about the brooklyn nets, calls his peeps his niggz and his women that he owns his btches. Racist? Is niggz in paris the brooklyn nets theme song? Is that Mushniks fault?

  • http://www.nba.com Red

@Ldub no the whole MAINSTREAM Hip Hop industry is really actually all the same. AGAIN, white folks in general never face oppression that’s why they easily say ignorant stuff publicly.

  • Ldub

@Red agreed. That is anything in the world. Any industry you get into. You can always point out the pros and cons. And depending on your lifestyle/history/past….it will/can sway your opinion/perception. Does it make it right? Hell naw. Everyone, regardless of race or gender, can see something negative with Rap music. But you can also see positive in it.

While the words were harsh, certainly not poetic, they ring more of a grumpy old man who is lamenting his good old days while reciting the age-old “the world is going to hell in a hand basket and this generation is leading the way”, mantra than one of a hardened racist.

In the meanwhile, Jay-Z is going to have to deal with a new reality: Build your empire by romanticizing the lyrical vernacular of the ghetto-life, and every now and then, the chickens are going to come home to roost–just to remind you.

Yeah I love hip hop but I know mainstream won’t ever try to give me thoughtful, appropriate hip hop. I’m not even an old head I’m a young cat but I know right & wrong.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

charliewinning…. Jay Z is racist? really? that’s what you took out of this? incredible.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    datkid… re-read his comments.

  • http://leipzig-eagles.de/ Speedy

    Mr. Mushnick is so stupid.
Jay-Z isn’t idealising the ghetto life nor does he talk like a gangster all the time. He is an artist, that uses an artform and the language of the ghettos/ streets to tell stories about the life there.
It’s like Mushnick questions the american dream, that everybody can achieve everything. I think he is just jealous, that a black guy can do what Jay-Z does. That makes him a racist.

  • Mike from Spain

@charliewinning -> please tell me what did I tell people ought to feel. I haven’t got enough experience of racial issues, so please bear with me here. I only said a couple of things: that the article, although treading into sensitive territory, felt to me not as a racial ‘rant’ in intent, but rather as an attack on Jay Z and his lyrics; and that if you mean to criticize racial intolerance, you don’t set a good tone by saying ‘old white people please die’ like several people have said here. I understand it is just a reaction, but if we all just react, then what? I welcome people saying I’m wrong and I don’t know s**t, as long as it does not involve just saying ‘you come from one of the most racist countries in the world so just shut up’. That does not possibly add anything to my knowledge or to your argument. Peace, man…

  • Mike from Spain

@Speedy -> I hadn’t seen that angle, it makes sense… I stand somewhat corrected, I thought Munchnik just found the language in the songs questionable, you imply that the fact is he doesn’t like Jay Z’s success. The way you put it, Mucnhnik is racist. Is being blind to the intent of Jay Z’s songs racism, or does racism make Munchnik blind to the intent?

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

“When white people’s power goes off, they panic…but when black people’s power goes off, they plan it!”

  • -Mas-

    hahaha

  • riggs

@mike from spain: jay-z hasnt talked about any of that ish that this idiot points out in a long time. His most recent song was a song about his newborn daughter. If you admittedly dont have any experience with racial issues, please refrain from speaking on the matter.

  • http://www.nba.com Red

@Speedy you clearly have never been to the projects, people don’t consistently refer to girls as b**ches. Artform doesn’t justify aiding in destroying the mindset of black youth.

  • oj

It’s nice how a lot of you try to fight racism with racism. Oh & if rap/hip hop isn’t just about drugs, women, guns & money then why is the majority of the songs based around it?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Rap music is about whatever the artist wants it to be about. How that influences you to stereotype an entire race because of it, I’ll never know, especially when the majority of people buying these records about sex and drugs are white… As well as the majority of people actually buying, selling, and using drugs.
It’s not like other musical genres use phrases like “Sex, Drugs, & Rock ‘N Roll”… Oh wait.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

“what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors”
I don’t get this bit. Is this secretly racist, or is this something to do with all those White Sox/Raiders merch that’s B&W?

  • http://slamonline dan

his ‘joke’ would of worked 20 years ago if Tupac had owned the Nets

    what a tool

  • Mike From Spain

@ riggs ok, sorry if I offended anyone, not my intention… I guess I need to learn what is off-limits. I see the extent to what this issue is still alive, I never thought it was so current still nowadays.

  • http://www.nba.com Red

Nobody is fighting racism with racism here, I have no intent of degrading any one race by my comments. Teddy are u kidding me…drug sells are at high rates throughout black donated communities but yes white folk buy the music but black folks bootleg it lol.

  • awkwardAARON

because with a name like the BROOKLYN N***AS .
    kris humphries can’t play.

  • EJ

The majority owner is Mikhail, so why not just call them Red Army and get red uniforms?

  • http://chicagotribune.com Diesel

Tarzan Cooper – u can go f#ck yourself. and all u ‘anti racism fighters’ on this site who conveniently ignore all the anti white comments can go f#ck yourselves .

  • http://www.nba.com Red

LOL@Diesel, you seem upset. Tarzan is an idiot, but you wack if you think Whites face racism in masses.

  • http://abcnews.com charliewinning

Diesel you go f-yourself. Sh#t seemed really funny when the jokes around here revolved around black people and the word n*gger. Racist pieces of sh*t had nothing to say until everyone started mentioning whites…Mike From Spain: It takes a lot of arrogance for someone to comment on what is and isn’t racist when you have zero experience or context to validate your opinion. 90% of the time people speak on black/white isssues it’s someone telling black people what is and isn’t racist towards them. It always gets turned around. F everyone with that attitude, especially all y’all here. The Spain thing touched a nerve. My four years living there didn’t help. My mom is a black Dominican. The history of anti-black sentiments in Latin countries, a direct result of Spanish influence, hits home because of what she experienced before she immigrated from DR. You’ll have to excuse me if I had no respect for your perspective on this issue.
