Orlando Magic Fire Stan Van Gundy, Mutually Part Ways With GM Otis Smith

Well, this doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. After a rocky season down in Orlando, (now former) Magic coach Stan Van Gundy has officially been relieved of his duties, while GM Otis Smith and the team have agreed to “mutually part ways.” More via NBA.com:”Orlando Magic Chief Executive Officer Alex Martins announced today that Stan Van Gundy has been relieved of his duties as head coach. In addition President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Otis Smith and the organization have mutually agreed to part ways. ‘On behalf of the DeVos Family, we sincerely appreciate and thank Otis and Stan for all that they have done on and off the floor for the Orlando Magic,’ said Martins. ‘These are the days you dread in this business, but we feel it’s time for new leadership and new voices.’ ‘They both brought die-hard dedication and an unmatched work ethic on a daily basis,’ added Martins. ‘Their success is well documented, as the Orlando Magic has had the fourth best record in the NBA over the last five years, and entering the playoffs this year the third most playoff wins over that period of time. The disappointment of getting eliminated in the first round of the playoffs these past two seasons played a primary role in our decision, as we feel our momentum towards winning a championship has paused. We wish Otis and Stan all the best and we look forward to taking the next step towards winning that championship.’ Van Gundy was named head coach on June 7, 2007, becoming the ninth head coach in franchise history.”

interim GM, presiding over his own trade, Dwight Howard. WoW Orlando, way to put your whole organization in a hostage situation

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Well, we can’t say we didn’t see this coming. Seriously though, Dwight is still gonna wanna leave anyway.

    Otis was a bad GM..

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

Orlando, in my opinion, messed up.
If they were going to do this, they should have done this after they lost to Atlanta in the 2011 Playoffs.
Not that I’m an advocate for a guy losing his job. But they should have done it after that Atlanta series.

  • shutup

    Took long enough.

    Oy :/

  • misso

I thank u SVG for your time here, you did what u could wit what we gave in the leagueu. SVG one of the best coaches. Let the haters & bandwagon idiots hate. Screw Otis thank God he’s gone. Let’s rebuild. Always & Forever. GO MAGIC!!!

  • http://www.nba.com Red

cosign Phil. This has been crazy, and seemingly isn’t over.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Well, this isn’t keeping Dwight. Magic are gonna be pushing hard for that 2014 #1 draft choice unless they can change whatever they did last year.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

I have no problem with Otis Smith losing his job, he took a team that made the NBA Finals and made them significantly worse. He made so many terrible moves

  • Ill Smith

Sooooo about those rumors saying Deight could decide the coach/GM’s fates not being true…..

  • Heals

  • phenomshyt

They should have traded howard and just started off fresh with young talent but now they are going to lose everything! Bad move!

  • Heals

as for Otis the only thing I see being mutual is their agreement that he signifcantly botched the potential to build a 4-5 year Eastern Conference/Championship contender around an incredibly marketable star. In life we all opportunities and if he has any personal accountability/integrity he’ll regret the moves he made for a while…

  • dan

what else did they expect after trading a great roster apart that made it to the 08 / 09 finals? plus it was neither smith’ nor van gundys fault that howard got hurt b4 the first round. thats jus b….t

  • http://thefrontofficenews.com JT

I wonder who the Magic will hire next? The writing was on the wall months ago but I didn’t see Smith getting let go also..

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY05

So how many star players will pass on playing in Orlando now that this happened? I know I wouldn’t want to play with D-12 after something like this because it seems like he’s calling the shots in Orlando. First layup I miss, I might be sent packing too! NO THANKS!

  • sb

    D12 is a BITCH

  • LA Huey

SVG deserves better anyways. Where to next?

  • T-Money

inevitable. i don’t think that svg deserved much better – he made mistakes, dwight made mistakes, management made mistakes. svg has not yet proved that he’s a good in-game coach, he’s had issues with subbing guys at the right time or scheming for unexpected things. the way he ratted out mgmt about the discussions they’ve had certainly didn’t sit well with people in the fo either.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

I know SVG flirted with joining the Kings back before he joined the Magic. I think he’d be great for the Sacramento team. As far as Orlando goes, I’d love to see Brian Shaw get the head coaching gig, if he’s interested.

  • lakernation

I guess Orlando trying to clean house but will they be able to keep Dwight Howard is the question!

  • LA Huey

KHoliday, that’s what happened to Courtney Lee. He missed that layup in the Finals, so Dwight broke his face and had him traded. It wasn’t quite in that order but you know…

  • bike

You are better off SVG. Remove yourself from this nut house, put it behind you. Better days await.

  • T-Money

la huey: i know it was kind of a joke but lee and howard were very close and dwight thought he could have really flourished for them. he wasn’t in on the trade at all.

  • D-Funk

BLOW tha whole thing up…Trade Dwight (aroun yo lips) for Wade and Bosh

  • http://www.nba.com Red

If I were a player or a coach I wouldn’t want to play alongside D12, simply because he’s too immature & selfish if u ask me.

  • Leenz
  • LA Huey

T-Money. I figured it was pretty obvious so I saw no harm in throwing that fallacy out there.
We’ll get over Dwight having his perpetual diva moment this season and get back to appreciating the talent he is next season.

  • magicman101

Why do people just copy other articles instead of writing their own stuff?? All the same stuff on every site about the release of Stan and Otis… FAIL…

  • MRich

COurtney Lee, McGrady, and G. Hill are all free agents this summer.

Get B.Shaw as coach and bring the vets home for a championship with Howard.

  • Greg

Otis smith gave rashard lewis $126 mill!!!!!! Are you serious? Cant believe he lasted this long…then again the owner must have signed off on the deal…can you imagine the spurs or thunder overpaying for such a mediocre player…here comes the next lock out!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

For those criticizing Otis Smith: I don’t think you guys realize how much instability surrounding a superstar compromises a GM’s ability to make sound, long-term moves. Or, for that matter, how hard it is to retool and rebuild while keeping your franchise player (which effectively rules out the draft). We’ve seen it in Cleveland, and now in Orlando. I’m not saying Otis was a great GM; just, he’s not as bad as people make him out to be.

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

Good riddance to both. Dwight started the media drama but both of them made it worse. Otis made a bad move for every good move. Van Gundy’s system is predictable and not dynamic enough to win a championship. Orlando needs an overhaul.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

I bet Patrick Ewing gets no serious looks at the head coaching gig. I don’t know enough about him as an assistant other than Stan thinks everyone underrates his impact on Dwight and everyone overrates Dream’s impact.

  • Clydesays

Otis Smith made a mess of that team. Breaking up a successful core to insert Arenas, Carter, etc? I’d guess Van Gundy wasn’t ‘fun’ to play for, but that’s not his job. He was hired to won games. I’m sure Pop or Doc or any winning coach isnt a pleasure to be around. If Dwight engineered this breakup, I’d think twice about bringing him onto my team.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Magic should have kept SVG and got rid of Howard. Howard is not a leader, he needs to be led. What coach is Magic going to really get that is that great right now, Phil Jackson is not walking through that door.

  • http://twitter.com/sesa_opas Sesa

It’s a player’s league. What do you expect?

  • BBaller

Is Del negro safe? Would SVG consider the Clipps? Any thoughts guys?

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

when/if SVG gets rehired somewhere else i wanna see what he can do with a team that only has maybe 2 or 3 three pt shooters instead of 10

  • TTWS3

Nate McMillan…Come on down!!! Maybe SVG could coach the Wizards.

  • SMIK

Some of you guys are slow today, none has mentioned Nate McMillan for the coaching job. he will be Orlandos first choice

  • misso

Nate McMillan & Donnie Walsh are the front runners for the jobs here in Orlando, which was said like 3 weeks ago

  • http://www.yahoo.com Captain Obvious

Dwight Howard first ever player / coach / gm!!!! Make it happen Dwight!!!!

  • MikeC.

@Nick – I want Ewing to get a shot at a head coaching job, but that mess seems too toxic for a newbie. I don’t know who could step into that coagulated mixture and not die from the fumes.

  • burnt_chicken

The pic of Stan Van was wisely selected. Well played, faceless Slam editor. Well played.

  • http://ww.realgm.com Watch Out

bring stan to Portland. and jeff a his assistant. ;) . jk. I wish Jeff would coach.. :(

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

No way McMillan is coaching the Magic, not with Dwight on the roster anyway.. Nate is a no nonsense kinda guy, and much harsher on his players than SVG was.. He banned headbands in Portland (until Crash came along, he made an exception due to his long hair). He and Dwight would be a disaster waiting to happen..

  • http://www.slamonline.com phsyco B

heres hoping SVG gets a ob with espn. Van gundy brothers are the most entertaining brothers in all of ball.

  • CrossOver

    Scapegoats. It’s a players league.
