Reports: Charlotte Bobcats to Interview Patrick Ewing, Michael Malone

Michael Malone and Patrick Ewing are reportedly the first two names being interviewed for the vacant head coaching position in Charlotte. Per the Contra Costa Times and Yahoo! Sports: “Malone, considered one of the NBA’s top assistant coaches, was expected to be a hot commodity this offseason. Malone is under contract for two more years with the Warriors. But Golden State general manager Bob Myers acknowledged Malone would likely be a head coaching candidate this offseason. [...] Ewing is a close friend of Charlotte owner Michael Jordan, and several sources believe the Hall of Fame center will turn out to be a serious candidate for the opening. Charlotte will make pitches to Golden State Warriors assistant Mike Malone and former Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan, but will likely hire its next coach from a pool of candidates like Ewing who have been less in demand for head-coaching jobs. Ewing has worked eight seasons as an NBA assistant, including the past five on Stan Van Gundy’s staff with the Magic. Detroit Pistons general manager Joe Dumars interviewed Ewing for his franchise’s head-coaching job last spring and was impressed with him. Charlotte officials flew to the Bay Area to meet with Malone on Tuesday.”

Patrick Ewing deserves a shot at being a head coach, but Charlotte isn’t a good idea. And I see MJ is still trying to hire his friends. Because it’s worked so well in the past.

  • D-Funk

hope Ewing get it, but dont they GOTTA interview blacc folks- like sum affirmative action shyt?

Ewing would turn A.Davis to a BEAST

  • D-Funk

^ will tha real D-Funk please stand up, thats y i wont put my info on this shyt…

  • LA Huey

Keep your friends close and your enemies…
The idea of interviewing black coaching candidates as affirmative action is insulting considering we’re talking about former players in a sport where blacks make up an overwhelming majority of teams.

  • Mack

    D’Antoni anyone?

  • pacmac

EWING, MISS MAKE THIS HAPPEN. Post game returns to Charlotte with arrival of Pat and “Da brow”!

  • Mack

MJ drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison; those two moves alone are enough to have him relieved of his duties

Hiring Ewing won’t turn out well..theres gotta be people in Charlotte telling jordan “NO! You can’t hire any more homies, Mike”…

  • crooklyn

Best news of the day. Give him a shot and stop hating (to all the jerks saying otherwise) No one person can truthfully say not to give him the job. Larry Brown keeps getting jobs for the last 100 years and has what…one title?

  • FnF

@LP, “No! You can’t hire any more homies, Mike” – Says a homie that Mike hired. All of MJ’s employees know not to bite the hand that feeds them.

Pat would be the best player in practice.

  • jake

Adam Morrison would have been a good pick had he not been injured. Does no one remember that he was a beast in college? Charlotte will be fine, they could easily make the playoffs this year with a couple free agents and maybe Anthony Davis or Harrison Barnes.

  • LP

@FNF: all those guys aren’t homies. The coach shouldn’t be a close friend of MJ, that project JUST FAILED! not a reflection of Patrick, but if it fails again, now mike has to fire/part ways with another friend..that Michael malone guy sounds legit, everyone is saying it….@JAKE: go to sleep. Playoffs??? theyll be lucky to win 20 games next year, we ALL can agree on this.

Malone would be a great choice. That logically means we are going to choose Pat. Oh well!

  • ash

I don’t see a huge problem if Patrick Ewing gets the job unless he’s not qualified. Jeez people calm it down

  • AsadSaleh3

Adam Morrison wasn’t worth that high of a pick whether he stayed healthy or not. The problem here is Jordan is incompetent when it comes to making basketball decisions. He hires people who will not challenge him on anything. Everything has to be his way. As long as that continues, the Bobcats will suffer as a franchise. He might as well coach himself.

I just don’t think an extreme rebuilding case like Charlotte is the best place for a first time head coach. I think that affirmative action “must interview a black coach” thing is only in college football if I’m not mistaken. It does exist somewhere tho.

  • AiRsMiTh

    There goes Mike Malone.

  • jake

@ lp, they almost made the playoffs last year, they tanked this year. All they need is a competant coach and a solid big man with a few free agent aquisitions. Kemba Walker, Augustine, Thomas and Harrison Barnes or Anthony Davis would be a good start. They need a coach with fresh ideas. They’ve got a promising Gm which will help now.

  • LP

@JAKE: no, they didn’t almost make the playoffs last year. The fact you mention Tyrus Thomas in a basketball based convo says alot. They do have a Good GM, but he is a lame duck. I like Augustine, but nobody else in the League does. kemba is a “come off the bench” scorer (Barea, Mayo, Crawford)…Free Agents? good luck getting them to come to a team that posted the worst record ever… I live 1hr from Charlotte, i realllly hope they come up so i can start attending games, but it will take 2 years, minimum, for them to even be somewhat competitive. JORDAN has made some bad decisions, Gave away Chandler and Gerald Wallace, let Felton walk away, ran Steven Jackson out…He has to turn the decisionmaking over to someone else.

  • jake

They were 3 games away from beating the Pacers into the playoffs, so yes, they did indeed almost make it. Tyrus Thomas still has the potential to be a contributor. Kemba Walker is a rookie, you can’t label him as a bench player that fast.

This might be a good franchise to try out a woman as head coach. It would put more women in the crowd which is a good thing since it’s a fact woman are more sympathetic to a bunch of losers than men are.

  • Treshiq

bahahah @ “Jake Go to sleep’ HILARIOUS!!!!!!

  • robb

MJ’s loyalty to his friends won’t let him be successful as an owner. Ewing’s getting the job for sure.

  • QJ

If MJ really wants his team to turn around, I would try to hire Jerry Sloan, Mike D’Antoni, or the one he played for which is Phil Jackson!

As a Magic fan, I say you can HAVE Patrick Ewing. Dwight didn’t develop a post move until he started working with Hakeem. And that was after Chewing worked with him for 3 and a half years. Good luck with Anthony Davis’ development.

  • Trent

I don’t see why Malone and Ewing are the top candidates for the position when coaches like D’Antoni and Nate McMillian are out there. D’Antoni would be the sexy pick, the team would be exciting to watch and sell tickets. McMillian would make us a better team not as exciting, but I feel it should be between them.
