Shaq Earns Doctorate From Barry University, is Now ‘Dr. Shaq’

“Dr. Shaq.” Has a decent ring to it, no? Well, better get used to it, because now that Shaq has earned his doctorate—which he officially receives from Barry University today—you can expect him to want to be called just that. Via the Palm Beach Post: “No, Shaq is no dummy, and Saturday everyone will know it. During commencement ceremonies at Miami’s James L. Knight Center, he’ll be anointed Dr. O’Neal by Barry University, receiving a doctoral degree in organizational learning and leadership with a specialization in human resource development. Sounds like a mouthful? Not for a guy with a grade-point average of 3.813 over 4 1/2 years at Barry. His dissertation: How Leaders Utilize Humor or Seriousness in Leadership Styles. (Twenty-second timeout: O’Neal rates Pat Riley’s leadership style as 80 percent serious, 20 percent humorous.) Shaq, 40, says becoming Dr. O’Neal is a ‘big accomplishment’ requiring ‘rigorous’ research tracing back to his final season (2008) with the Heat, which explains why he chose a South Florida university. Saturday, this 7-foot-1 retired center will don his custom-made, XXXL robe, receive his degree from the 5-foot Barry president, Sister Linda Bevilacqua, and try not to turn into a bowl of Jell-O. ‘I just hope that when I look at my mother and my girlfriend, I hope they’re not crying,’ he says. ‘I know if I see them cry, I’ll probably lose it.’”

Finally, Barry University’s most famous accomplishment is no longer Najeh Davenport taking a dump in a dorm room closet.

Wow. Talk about impressive. Rapper, Deputy sherif, PhD, analyst . . . oh, and basketball player. But let’s forget about that movie business.

It’s remarkable the discrepancy between how smart Shaq (apparently) is and how moronic he sounds.

Shaq ruined Inside the NBA, He’s so annoying and tries too much to be funny.

if I could choose a place in the world to study, Miami doesn’t sound too bad

congrats to shaquille oneal. a great example of never being satisfied and always maximizing your potential. many would rest on their laurels in sports but few would seek to achieve in other areas in life. coming from a tough background, you can really tell who learned from their experiences and grab life by the horns. Kudos

    Congrats to Shaq!

Maybe I shouldn’t think this way, but I just have a hard time believing that Shaq actually did all that research by himself and that he wrote his dissertation all by himself either. Maybe I shouldn’t doubt the big guy, but I just have a hard time believing it. And his GPA means nothing, because so many college players have high GPA’s but that’s because they have study hours where people basically do the work for them. Still I’ll give him props.

Canesta: “because so many college players have high GPA’s but that’s because they have study hours where people basically do the work for them” . . . not when you’re doing a PhD.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Honestly, a PhD takes a RIDICULOUS amount of work. I doubt Shaq has had the time to legitimately compile all of “his” research. If I had to guess, he came up with the idea, gave vague suggestions, but had a team gather research and proof “his” actual paper. I’m sorry, but when I hear Shaq speak, I cannot make any connection between his egregious butchering of the English language and a PhD quality thesis.

  • Robbin

Congratulations Dr. O’Neal! I’m pursuing my EdD from NCU and you have given me new hope and inspiration.

    Thank you and congratulations again.

  • MikeC.

@Caboose – how can you say Shaq didn’t have the time to do the work? He hasn’t played a full season since…well…maybe a decade ago. He’s had plenty of downtime to work on everything except being a professional basketball player. Actually, I’m disappointed that he only has one PhD.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

Mikec, he might have had time to do it but don’t mistake activity for achievement yo jvg

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Haha touché mike. But I doubt teams (or TNT) would take kindly to him focusing on a pointless (and utterly useless) degree when he has a contract to fulfill. Either way, I don’t like or respect this.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

I have several friends with PhDs. It actually isn’t that much work – it’s 500 words of writing a week for four years for a 100,000 word thesis. You may not have any contact hours at all, meaning you really only have to research and write. If it’s written research only all you have to do is read academic journals and theses every day.
Research, research, write, research, write, repeat.

It’s BS. Shaq hasn’t the brains nor did he have the time. Why would the uni allow this? Publicity. I, myself, looked up the university after reading about it, so it’s working.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

Ugh: totally depends on the PhD and what you want to get out of it. Most of the time to have a shot at an academic job after you finish you do have to teach (on contracts), you do have to publish, you have to build your CV, you have to complete coursework and comprehensive tests (which include reading 200+ books), and in my field your dissertation has to be about 400-500 pages long. There’s also a lot of public speaking. But again, it all depends on what you do and what you want to get out of it.

Guys, don’t confuse his degree with a Phd. This is a EdD. Never heard of this type of online doctorate before. I bet he never had to defend his thesis. Anyway his pic is on their website (publicity working).

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

My bad, totally missed the EdD. Ok, he did absolutely nothing important and somebody just wrote a paper for him. Moving on.

  • noblenator15

schools a joke so its all good

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. This is a great example for young boys in this country. Unfortunately most of their heroes today are either music stars or athletes. I hope seeing Shaq with all the money and notoriety he has, choose to continue his education is absolutely great. You go Shaq.

  • Solito

It is kinda funny that his manager took the same classes and got the same degree… Its LSU all over again, right Shaq? But what do I know. Maybe he studied hard :P

  • Dre

It is hilarious how most of the people up here are calling Shaq stupid when the majority of you don’t have a BS or BA. You guys don’t have a damn clue what he has been doing in his off time and you are acting like you know the man. You don’t know jack $#!@. Props to the big fella for keeping it going with regards to his education. Some of you please… re-read your comments. You have to know you sound like jealous haters. smh

  • V

    Dr. Diesel was already taken.

  • Dr. Doof

    The Big Degree Collector.

  • PK

Did you know that Barry U does not require a dissertation as part of thier program. For those of use who completed the real doctorate, the dissertation is the key component of work accomplished. Thus, Shaq is ABD (All but Dissertation) as far as I am concerned. Sorry… no Dr. for Shaq…. Go back to reality TV.

I work in higher education. While some of you may not like how it was done he sure setting an example that education important. I would like to read his dissertation, since he got the Ph.D. in education. Also, I would have enjoyed his doctoral defense. Way to Shaq!

Congratulations, Dr. Shaq. He earned every bit of the Ph.D, because Barry University is a Distinguished Catholic University. I am very proud of you for the contribution to academic body of works. Furthermore, you can not compromise the quality of education at “Barry” because of its long standing reputation of integrity and excellence in learning. Shaq is a smart guy who is setting excellent example for our children, he had everything, still was able to recognize the importance of education. Big Kudo to you, DR. Big Congratulations to Barry University, the professors as well for working with the Big Guy to make certain he succeeded in his academic pursuit.
