Tyson Chandler Credits DPOY Award to Knicks Teammates’ ‘Poor Defense’

Tyson Chandler was in a playful mood during the presser to announce his win of the Defensive Player of the Year award, as he jokingly took a shot at his Knicks teammates‘ defense (or lack thereof.) Per the NY Daily News: “Tyson Chandler stepped to the podium, accepted his trophy Wednesday as the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year and thanked his teammates for facilitating the accolade. ‘I would like to thank my teammates because without their poor defense and letting people fly by them I wouldn’t get credit for stepping up,’ Chandler said … ‘It’s been a process,’ Chandler said. ‘We’ve had our ups and downs, but guys are buying in.’”

JustinG if you can’t see he’s joking, that’s even more hilarious.

    Best acceptance speech ever!

  • Oh Nose

It should read: “Tyson Chandler Credits DPOY Award to Dwight Howard Getting Injured”

    no it shouldnt read that.

How does a player on one of the worst defensive teams win this award?
I felt just as confounded that year Marcus Camby won it, when his Nuggets were the worst defensive team in the league.

  • sadeye2507

Yeah Amare handed it to him.

  • 602Shorty

    Funny but true

    @sadeye2507, handed? Too soon?

    Handed? Too soon?

  • Iggi

It should read: I will not accept it, cause King James should be the one up here NOT ME.

Joke or not, TC stated his teammates allowed players to fly by them so he could step up. Whats the difference between this or what Serge does in OKC? Disagree with my opinion all you want, the impact that Ibaka had on the Thunder, was much bigger than that in which Chandler had on NY. And yes that is largely because of the blocks. IDC what people say or think, when Serge was in the game, teams didnt want to go to the rack. I cant say the same for Chandler. Im not hating on him, because he is one of my fav big men, but I still think Serge should have one. I just thought of something else, this aware is definitely backwards. MVP is typically the best player on the best team? Why wouldnt the DPOY be the same thing? You would always stand out if you were a great defender on a poor defensive team. But if youre a good/great defender on a good/great team…that means youre defense is even better/at a higher level because youre standing out from other great/good defenders around you! Right?

whenever a big man wins this award, they always make that joke; Alonzo Mourning said the same thing when he won it.

  • Niio

Knicks weren’t the worst defensive teams in the NBA they were actually ranked in the top 10, but they were one of the worst last year

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Serge Ibaka is only a good help defender. I don’t know why people think he should have got DPOY for just being a good help defenders.

  • LA Huey

nbk, because they only look at box scores and don’t watch the games. Or simply don’t understand how good defense is played.

well this Ldub guy is the flar bearer.

    Ldub clearly is clueless.

  • ClydeSays

“Amare & Melo still think ‘defense’ means waiting around on the perimeter until I rebound the ball & give it back to them…”

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

L dub is out of his mind. Chandler is the second best defensive anchor in the league(dwight is first) he took a the knicks defense from 22nd to 5th, is a monster on the PR(which ibaka still can’t guard) and he can switch onto certain guards occasionally. He was the catalyst for the mavs championship last year. Lebron should’ve still won it, but I’m not upset that chandler did. F*CK him tho.

  • Yesse

Hahahaha, the truth is so dramatic. This is the first thing that popped to my mind after hearing he got the award.

  • LA Huey

datkid makes a good point about P&R defense. Having a big that knows how to guard P&Rs is HUGE is this league. Also, Tyson is intelligent enough to know when to hedge and shadow on defense and when to flat out rotate.

    D-Fence! Dun-nun-nun-nuh! D-Fence! Dun-nun-nun-nuh!

  • MikeC.

The Knicks are a collection of crappy individual defenders who play excellent team defense because Tyson Chandler is behind them, barking out rotation orders, erasing their mistakes while containing his own man and controlling the boards. Sure, there are other legit candidates, but Tyson is legit too. He helped a team of matadors become legit defenders.

@Ldub – If you don’t care if we disagree with you or what we think why are you talking to us?

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

I somehow feel that DPOY so often goes to a big man through a certain amount of prejudice toward nebulous terms like “defensive presence” and “intimidation”. Is Chandler actually responsible for stopping more points being scored than James or Allen? And how much does wing players dominating the offence in the NBA in the last decade have to do with how the role of the big man is perceived?

  • Justin G.

Orange, obviously I knew he was joking. So sensitive when anything negative comes towards the Knicks. Does it bother you that he didn’t really deserve this award? I know you will say “of course he did” and go on to explain why but I wonder if he played for Dallas or somebody else and won the award whether you’d agree? Doubtful

lol! It’s funny because it’s true…seriously though, Chandler was the main reason NY’s defense went from terrible last season to 5th in the league this season. Also, I think big’s are more likely to recieve DPOY’s because having a good defensive big is ussually the most important thing to have to be a good defensive team. The rules in place currently prevent perimeter defenders from having as big of an impact.
