Bulls Reportedly Considering Trading Luol Deng for a High Draft Pick

According to the Daily Herald, the Chicago Bulls’ front-office is dangling Luol Deng as trade bait should a team want to trade a high draft pick: “So why would the Bulls even think about trying to trade Luol Deng for a high draft pick? That does appear to be one of the strategies under consideration right now, league sources confirmed. A draft camp meeting with North Carolina forward Harrison Barnes was mentioned on the team’s website, but there’s probably no single target. And yes, it does seem odd that Deng would go from leading the NBA in minutes per game to trade bait. That can be explained, however. The Bulls are disappointed Deng is planning to wait until after the London Olympics to repair a torn ligament in his left wrist. Really, though, missing the first month or two of next season is irrelevant in the long run. The Bulls have plenty of love for Deng. The issue here is being backed up against the luxury tax and trying to create flexibility for the future. Next season, Deng, Derrick Rose, Carlos Boozer, Joakim Noah will make roughly $56 million combined. If those four could lead the Bulls to the NBA Finals, there would be no problems. Even forgetting about how injuries might spoil next season, the team’s greatest strengths the past two years were Rose and depth. The Bulls will have to ditch the depth unless they can move one of the high-salaried players. Rose is going nowhere, obviously, and there’s virtually no interest around the league in Boozer. Of the other two players, Noah is arguably tougher to replace as a mobile 7-footer who can anchor the defense. So that leaves Deng as the best candidate to be shopped. A trade is no sure thing, since Deng has two more years left on his contract at a hefty $27.6 million and could miss the start of next season.”

That’s why the Bulls aren’t going to win a championship anytime soon because of reinsdorf cheap a$$ acting like he doesn’t have the money for luxury tax after he has made and still making lots of money off of Jordan and the 90′s Bulls.

  • KaneDaddyBig

They need to get rid of Boozer, not Deng.

Bad bad move if they let this happen. He’s the glue guy on the Bulls. Lose the glue = come unstuck

  • Oh Nose

    Stupid people are stupid

  • LA Huey

We just don’t appreciate great defense, I guess.

This is bad. Lu is too valuable. Trade Boozer

  • ab40

Things like this makes you want them to draft another tyrus thomas. Even after last season. This stuff makes you sick in de stumach. He’s been trying to get GB basketball off the ground ever since it was known that the UK were going to organize the Olympics. To try to keep him home right now is downright pathetic for the Bulls and the nba to try that.

  • 2Quick

Why would they need to do that they only need to stay healthy and they could win an NBA title they just need a better than decent BKup PG for D-Rose till he can come bk

  • R32

What is this, a rebuilding move? Bulls are primed to make a run now not take a step back. Deng is rock solid at the 3, not a superstar but a player you can count on to get buckets and play D.

If it was a player + draft pick for Deng, then maybe. But straight up, no.

  • bdogg

i guess the pau for deng rumors are no dead..i prefer pau for gay anyways..wanna uptempo the offense!

  • http://nba.com GP23

He is one of the best defensive players in the league.. so no way this should happen.

  • Josh

I love the Bulls but its sickening to not realise the importance of him playing for GB.

On the subject of a trade, he is too good defensively to gamble on a high pick for.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

It would serve them better to Amnesty Carlose Boozer

  • spurs4life

    @Slick Ric- AMEN!!!!

  • Sean B

Why is it pathetic for the Bulls to be concerned about their investment? Last I checked, they are the ones footing the bill for the millions that he is owed, not Great Britain. Sure, it’s romantic that he wants to be the hero that leads his team to the Olympics, but he’s injured and needs to address the issue the ASAP if they are really committed to winning an NBA Championship.

  • LA Huey

I can see the Bulls side and Deng’s side of the Olympic situation. I think 2012 might be the last time we see NBA players over age 25 in the Olympics.

  • jose

Boozer Needs to go, Not Deng. . .

  • Ldub

That is why he is such a hot trade. If he is this talented, then a team might be willing to give up a pick. Say they do get a top 10 pick for him…that means they can bring in a player similar to his skill set (for less money) and then they can still make a trade to get pau. Idk if Deng would be on the lakers radar since they already have wmp and barnes. (if the pau to chi rumors are still true/on)

  • Heals

I understand the frustration from Bulls fans, but this tells me that NO team is bitting on any Boozer deal (even ones where Chi may not get the best player, but simply want to unlaod his contract). This seems like a move before another move…

  • Cie

This is the core of the team: Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Taj Gibson, Kyle Korver, Jimmy Butler, Omer Asik. The Bulls would be STUPID to trade any of those players.

  • Cie

    Oops I forgot Luol Deng!

  • Mike from Spain

Barnes is expiring, MWP… oh, I don’t know what happens with MWP, he is virtually untradeable.

  • FnF

@Heal, not only is no team biting on Boozer, the Bulls simply don’t want to pay these guy Championship contending money IF they know Rose won’t be healthy enough long enough for it to matter. They are basically conceded next season for a high pick this year and locking in a lottery pick next year so that when Rose comes back he has some better wing players to run with.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

I agree Cie that’s the core. Undoubtedly, I feel we need to work Jimmy harder. HE CAN BE LUOL DENG..or dare I say it better!

  • Basketball iQ

    chicago is dead!

  • Pais

Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of guys who CAN do what Deng does, but there’s very few who actually DO what he does, never mind with any degree of consistency. That’ll be a great pick up for just about anyone, that said I hope his talents don’t end up wasted on a non-contender. He’s a difference maker for one the fringe contenders (like the Bulls I suppose).

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

chicago will be horrible w/o deng… i guess mgk comes closest to bringing a deng-like defensive presence but he’ll kill their spacing w/ his shooting smh

  • http://www.nba.com Shadojoker

Hell to the no..@bulls ownership…bad move..just like the trade they almost made for Kemp with the Sonics with Pippen back in 94

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

Slick Ric has it right. Bulls are going to struggle because Reisndorf is a cheap son of a b*tch when it comes to the Bulls. He’s said it before in multiple interviews that his first passion is baseball, and that he uses a large portion of his profits on the Bulls to support the White Sox, who lose money on a regular basis with their giant contracts and poor attendance. He won’t go into luxury tax for the contending Bulls, but he’ll carry a $98MM payroll for a team that’s fourth from dead last in attendance. Someone who actually cares about the team and the city needs to buy the Bulls from Jerry. And someone needs to slap our two idiot GM’s (Paxson is still a GM no matter what they title him) for willing to trade Deng for at best a 5th round pick. Harrison Barnes couldn’t dominate in college but he’s supposed to replace an NBA All Star? Get the f*ck out of here.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

Keep Deng and his injured a$$ and tank this crap hole of a season next year and get a higher draft pick for 2013-2014. Then call up Mirotic, amnesty Boozer, and make a legit run at it in two years. If you really want to trade Deng, his expiring contract next year is going to get you a hell of a lot more in return than it will now.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

#5 pick, not 5th round. My bad.

  • Heals

@FnF, could end up being a great situation then for Bulls fans in this bittersweet scenario. Chi struggles to playoff spot this year (ala teh Celtics past few years), if Rose gets healthy enough they cause ruckus, if not so beit. Bulls then get a high pick (and also swap 2013 picks with a team that could be lottery bound as part of Deng trade) this year and a high pick next year, have much more cap $$$ for a good FA pool (2013 summer) and Rose is 18 months off of surgery and foaming at the mouth to catch up to Durant/LeBron’s ring (maybe both, 2013 rematch anyone?) with a young, loaded squad and better #2 sidekick…

  • Gage life

All these “fans” that believe this is a bad move clearly don’t know basketball or business!!! No One and I mean NO ONE wants boozer’s contract so trade is not an option. You think GMs don’t watch basketball???They notice what we notice. Outside of rose there are no athletes on this team. I got a lot of respect for Lu but he can not take over a game. Plus he I grossly overpaid due to bring in 12 mil alone. That’s equivalent to rose almost ,ridiculous.Rose is 23 why not bring in a cheaper player with growing potential???we must bring taj back therefore we need the cap space. Why pay luxury tax on a team thats only good enough to get to the finals!!not sure if we(bulls) could get passed Miami but clearly OKC is too athletic! A future lineup of rose Barnes gibson mirotic Noah butler would give rose the much more atheistic lineup he desires.

For Who? luol deng is a underrated player. if your gonna trade him i suggest… try to trade him for who ever gets jared sullinger and another player.

  • http://slamonline.com samoaninlondon

GET RID of Carlos Boozer – the dude’s heart pumps cool aid in big match ups.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I’m curious. If this is serious, I hope the Suns have a good long look… perhaps they could package that 14th pick of theirs with Channing Frye (or something maybe decent for the Bulls to take it…Dudley?) for Luol and a 2nd round pick (If the Bulls have one to include….??).

Luol would fill a need the Suns have in being a decent 2nd fiddle to Nash/Gortat combo, in that ‘HILL’ role, it would be a start for Nash to see they are serious?

  • floe

they’re gonna ruin that team if they get rid of deng. they need to deal with boozer now instead.

  • Kilgore Trout

    Trade Booz for Pau Gasol.

Boom. The Bulls are a lock for the finals.

  • http://Fella1Hoops.com Fella1hoops.com

The only way that will work is if the Bulls can draft Jeremey Lamb. He’s the best 3 man in the draft, besides maybe Harrison Barnes. Really, the Chicago needs to trade Carlos Boozer, its tough considering his salery. It would be nice if they could sign Lamar Odom. Deng is a silent assain, its a risky move, but it could work.
