Clippers Reportedly Looking to Acquire Lamar Odom

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

Lamar Odom could be headed back to the Los Angeles Clippers, the team that drafted him into the NBA back in 1999.

ESPN is reporting that for the deal to happen, though, the Clippers might need another team to absorb Mo Williams’ contract:

With a Friday deadline looming for the Mavericks to buy out the final year of Odom’s contract for $2.4 million, Dallas officials have green-lighted Odom’s agent, Jeff Schwartz, to try to find a new home for Odom this week via trade. The Mavericks and Schwartz also have discussed pushing the deadline back into July if an Odom trade can’t be struck before Friday. The Mavericks’ interest in an Odom deal, though, is purely to gain financial flexibility, which likely necessitates a third team to take on Williams. If no trade can be struck, either this week or before an adjusted deadline, Dallas is expected to eventually buy Odom out and make him a free agent, with big-market teams such as Miami and New York also planning to pursue him in that scenario.

Mo Williams has maintained all season that he plans to exercise his $8.5 million player option for the 2012-13 season despite the fact the Clippers have Chris Paul and promising youngster Eric Bledsoe at point guard, and want to bring back veteran guard Chauncey Billups, even after the 35-year-old suffered a season-ending Achilles injury. Yet it remains to be seen whether Mo Williams will hold to that stance. He has until June 30 to make that decision and his agent, Mark Bartelstein, recently said that he and the Clippers were “kind of exploring everything” to find the best solution.

According to the article, the Los Angeles Lakers have expressed interest in the 29-year old Williams, and could use their trade exception (from their own Lamar Odom trade last season) to acquire the point guard.

odom back to his old routes!!

  • http://www.blogspot.com LLC#12

The Lakers want Mo Williams? I didn’t think anybody wanted him

  • http://slamonline.com Jones

Mo would be an upgrade over Blake. And if Sessions walks they probably need a new PG and Mo wants to be a starter.

  • clydesays

Woah. Who the hell gave Mo Williams an 8.5 million dollar player option? The Bucks? Wow… For an average PG that just seems nuts… Wonder if Odom will go back to his old weed ways if he makes it back to the Clips? More likely he never stopped…

Mo Williams should exercise the option. Why give $8.5 million away? If Clips don’t want him, they can trade him.

  • floe

why do u think james left cleveland? danny ferry gave him that contract.

  • Heals

The Dynamos known as the Cle Cavaliers, you know so that LBJ would stay to play with Mo. If you go no half-a$$in it LO, CP3 don’t play that…

  • Jake

I heard they are looking at darius minutes, maggette, olowakandi and key on fooling lol

  • tpathi1

is there any player who lebron played with on the Cavs thats a starter in the league anymore?

  • eZ

Odom tot miami, makes a lot of sense if you look at all the things that matter to both; history, family, business, length, versatility.

  • Jono

@tpathi1 Great point, just shows how good LeBron is and how bad his supporting cast/management are. Can’t think of any though, he dragged Eric Snow/Wally Sczerbiak/Sasha Pavolvic/Big Z/Mo Williams realtively deep into the play-offs multiple times. Only Anderson Varejao could be a starter if more than half the teams.

  • Ldub

Cosign eZ….also perhaps Brooklyn. Since he is from NY. Khloe can continue her show in either city. (LA, Mia or NY). Those would be the only destinations I would look into. Having Odom come off the bench for Bosh…playing a little C, or point C/point F would be nice addition too.

  • Drew

@jono Don’t forget Wally Szczerbiak and Big Z were both All-Stars haha

  • http://bebe310.blogspot.com/ anonymous

cosign drew. once upon a time (early on and throughout in the prime of their careers) wally and big z were starters and so was larry hughes.

There was a rumor I heard that if Odom went back to an LA team and performed at the level he did before Dallas, Cuban would sue him for breach of contract.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

A “Khloe & Lamar” reunion with LA will make for a happy productive Lamar, and the Clipshow gets a happy productive Lamar. this is a win-win.

  • Ldub

That would be crazy Caboose. I would understand it because LO definitely under played last season. But are you really able to sue someone for lack of effort and title it “breach of contract”?

  • http://slamonline.com 19821982

I believe that Cuban would try something like that, but I doubt it would make it to court.

  • http://www.slamonline.com the_unknown

dat shii cray, ur telling me this man can only be a productive player in LA? lmao wow

  • Pete

they would cause he is a washed up reality star peice of garbage with no talent who cryed about playin pro ball in big d wah wah wah what a baby

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

good move, adds a little versatility if odom gets back to normality because he’s in LA again.

  • hugo

if the clips get LO and 2010 LO shows up next year, they can beat san antonio

If your girl leaves you for someone else and you later find out that new guy’s getting that good good that you never got while with her, can you sue her for “breach of contract?” Questions abound.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

It depends… Did the two of you sign a contract for two guaranteed years worth of good good?

  • Ugh

Caboose, did you really believe that when you heard it?
