Dwight Howard Reportedly Asks For Trade to Nets, Thinks Magic Blackmailed Him

With the Draft in the rear-view and free agency kicking off Saturday night at midnight, trade season is about to hit full gear. And with Dwight Howard’s situation far from settled, we were expecting him to be in the news this week—but even for what’s been a pretty absurd story thus far, this just took things to a new level. According to ESPN’s Chris Broussard, the Magic big man met with GM Rob Hennigan Friday and asked for a trade up to the BK, and he also believes Orlando blackmailed him into signing that opt-in cause back in March. OK then. More details: “Dwight Howard met with new Orlando Magic general manager Rob Hennigan on Friday and told him he wants to be traded to the Brooklyn Nets, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. Howard and Hennigan sat down face to face in Los Angeles, meeting for the first time since Hennigan became Orlando’s GM nearly two weeks ago. Hennigan was noncommital when Howard told him he wants to be traded to Brooklyn, sources said. Hennigan did not tell Howard whether he would trade him. His intentions were merely to hear the thoughts of the Magic superstar. Howard picked up the option for the final year of his contract with Orlando on March 15. But since then, he has grown increasingly disgruntled with the organization, even telling people close to him that he feels the Magic blackmailed him into signing the ‘opt-in’ clause. Howard shared his feelings of being blackmailed by the Magic with the NBA Players Association last week, sources said. He — either himself or through his representatives — approached the union wondering if he might have a legal complaint against the club.”

He’s saying he got blackmailed? Seriously? I hope they trade him to the Bobcats. This guy’s a joke.

  • Bh

My god, this guy is ridiculous. Why didn’t he just opt out and become a free agent.

  • Bh

Actually KJ, that Bobcats team would be pretty dope with Dwight, MKG, and a bunch of lose parts. That’s basically the exact recipe that made Orlando a perennial 50 win team. In fact, Dwight’s probably never had a better NBA teammate than MKG.

  • Bh

which means they should trade him to a 2nd tier squad in Siberia.

The Decision and Melodrama don’t look bad at all, when you compare them to Dwightmare/Indecision.

  • http://slamonline.com KJ

And I also don’t get how he got blackmailed. If the Magic told him last March that he either opts in or gets traded to the Lakers, he could have just got traded and signed with the Nets after the season.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

“If you don’t sign an extensions we are trading you to the Lakers” knowing he would opt to sign the extension. This giving them extra time to acquire a better trade from a team who will pull the trigger at maximum value. The LA deal was Bynum straight up, they “forced” “blackmailed” “tricked” “whatever you want to call it”, Dwight into staying.

What happened to you dwight? I used to really like your personality as human being and and as an NBA player. Now I can’t stand the news surrounding you.. What happened to you man? what the hell happened…

  • Sundance

He ain’t superman no more….he’s Dwight Coward

  • 1tail

This is the 2nd biggest decision of his life. Going pro being his first. He is going to flip flop on it naturally. I love how people are complaining about something they can completely ignore.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Why does he want to go to the Nets so bad? Pretty sure Williams is on his way out, and Lopez, I’m sure would have to be traded to get Howard.. Not much of a roster to play with.

  • ChipS

It’s cool if you flip flop on it when your wavering with the decision in your head or talking it over with your family, but don’t give your word or come to an conclusion unless your completely sure about what you want to do. Because then you start waking up second guessing, and puts a notion that you can’t think for yourself. Think your decision threw and don’t look back with whatever choice you make. Now, it’s not all Dwight here either. Management and ownership has some fault in this circus also.

Howard first begged to re-sign late at night, while traveling home on the Magic’s plane. Magic would not allow him to do so without consulting his agent and told him that he needed to waite until the next day- because making such an important decidion wasn’t right under those circumstances. When he finally signed, he blamed his indecision on people close to him giving him poor advice.

He needs a tatse of his own medicine: Publicly refuse to trade him for a while and force him to continue to implode. Deny his trade to BK at all cost, then start telling him that he is being traded to the least desireable teams possible. Change the name of that team every few days.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Cosign real nbk. That’s blackmail. This whole situation is crazy. Trade him to Either New Orleans for Anthony Davis, Charlotte for Kemba Walker, or the Wizards for John Wall. Or to LA for Bynum.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

This is most certainly not blackmail. Do you guys even know what that means? This is an ultimatum, which is a COMMON practice in business.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    Blackmail -
    1. (Law) the act of attempting to obtain money by intimidation, as by threats to disclose discreditable information
    2. the exertion of pressure or threats, esp unfairly, in an attempt to influence someone’s actions

  • http://slamonline dan

multi millionaire who cant have EXACTLY what he wants when he wants it.

Sorry Dwight but please call me if you want to know what real problems are.

  • flimo

Trade Bass for Howard & picks, maybe some cash.

  • http://9gag.com/gag/4568611 Max

Dont want to know about the ‘Dwightmare’ stop reading about it, simple as that.

  • Clydesays

The Magic and Howard get equal blame for this. Who is going to the press every time one of them burbs? Making it public limits both the magic and Howard’s leverage. Both should have. Figured out how to make this happen. At this point lottery picks and expiring contracts would be the best deal for Orlando. So, so f’ed up….

  • @bh

You make a lot of claims about a guy who has never played a minute of NBA basketball.

and NBK gave a definition that doesn’t fit what happened to Dwight at all. In order to be able to blackmail some one you have to have power over them, Dwight had all the power in the situation, he didn’t have to sign anything and he would have been a free agent right now. Oh and getting traded to the Lakers wouldn’t be a “threat” lmao, they probably would have made it to the finals (if he remained healthy) Once again Dwight blames someone else for his lack of “balls” Smith is gone and SVG gone who is he going to blame now? Truth be told with all the reports, how come this came out now? That organisation leaks like a siv.

Dwight you used to be my favorite player, but you your such a drama queen,i woudnt be surprised if u sighned a contract with, with the real house wives oflos angelas

  • Bob

Who is under contract for the Nets right now? I think that ship has sailed and Dwight will have to arbitrate or wait. Or, Dwight can refuse to report pending a hearing, or it’s just a big mess. Hope that he wins and can sign wherever he wants.
I like the idea of Deron and Dwight, Beasley and Green running the wings. And some unknown rebounder and Pg and SG backups.

  • MeloMan15

I REALLY hope he doesn’t get traded to the Nets… he doesn’t deserve it

This whole “Dwightmare” won’t look as bad in a year. If the Decision, the Melodrama and Dwightmare were all to take place at around the same time, I’m sure Bron and Melo would get more negativity than Dwight. It’s just a matter of timing (Decision and Melodrama being finished and in the past). Superstars in the NBA have all the power now and know it. This is going to be the trend for years to come with any big potential free agents. May as well get used to it boys.

  • The Great Mambino

We all knew this was coming, and yet, we’re all still so appalled that it’s happening. It’s not so much disgusting that he’s demanding a trade, but rather that he’s saying the Magic “blackmailed” him into this. Awful. Regardless, if Orlando has to make a deal, it has to be with the Nets, if for no other reason than they can dump all their awful contracts on the Nets, who have the most cap room possible, even with the Gerald Wallace signing. More specifics here: http://thegreatmambino.blogspot.com/2012/07/how-orlando-magic-deal-dwight-howard-to.html

  • D12FSU

I don’t think Dwight knows what blackmailing means… it was clearly an ultimatum
