Karl Malone Would Start a Team With Scottie Pippen Instead of Michael Jordan

Various members of the legendary Dream Team were doing promotional work with various media outlets yesterday, as they hyped up the documentary that aired last night. Karl Malone created the biggest stir, by claiming that if he had a time machine (and owned an NBA team), his first pick would be Scottie Pippen instead of Michael Jordan. From the Dan Patrick Show (via CSN Chicago): “Malone made a surprising choice when asked which member of the Dream Team — other than longtime Utah Jazz teammate John Stockton — he would have started a team with that included himself. ‘I would have to start my team with Scottie Pippen,’ he said. ‘This is why I would take Scottie: Do you remember the time that Michael retired? I watched Scottie Pippen when the Chicago Bulls weren’t really good and Scottie led that team in every statistical category, and I just remembered that. Plus, he’s a guy who could care less about scoring. He wants to stop the best player on the other team. That would have been pretty cool, to see Scottie guarding Michael.’”

Why would he want to play with Mike? He’s a scorer, Pip would be a better fit with him. Malone needs a lot of shots.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2Pm_5aIavU&feature=g-all-u Max

    Seems logical to me.

  • Jake

And that’s why he had 0 rings. And two borrowed MVP awards.

  • lakernation

He’s a dummy, he would be in the same situation is in now….. RINGLESS!

  • Kabelion

Jordan never won without Pippen, and Pippen never won without Jordan. Without each other, they are ringless and would always be ringless.

  • tpathi1

hahaha Karl is a fool! and Kabelion, MJ and Pip without each are ringless yes, but how do you figure they would “always be ringless?” thats nonsense! MJ would have gotten all of his regardless!

  • kobesBESTfriend

he probly thinks MJ would be like Kobe(an as$)was as a teammate…and if he wasnt gonna go with MJ he should of chose the admiral or chuck over pip!!!

  • Sparker

    that’s hilarious

  • bdogg

look i am not picking sides but lets look at some facts. in the 95 playoffs when jordan came back in march penny average 33 or so vs the bulls. pippen guarded him most of the time. i know pippen was a lot older in his portland days but kb lit him up. jordan was physically stronger than both of them..do the math! not saying i would take pippen over mj but lets be truthful on this !

  • Fat Lever

The Bulls without Mike for that season weren’t good? Really, because I remember them winning 55 games that year. Maybe Malone is on those bath salts.

  • EuroForce

It’s like picking Robin over Batman or Mini me over Dr.Evil or Chodda Boy over Orgazsmo.Same thing.

  • http://blackamericaweb.com charliewinning

Pippen and Malone would mesh better than Jordan and Malone. Jordan is the greatest, but why is it so hard to believe that not everyone and their mother would want to play with him? He was very ball dominant. It’s not like Malone was saying Pip was the better player.

  • Ldub

You cant say ALWAYS…but I do feel Pippen had a huge part of MJ’s success. You have a man (like Karl said) that doesnt care about scoring. A lockdown player. Even though MJ was a great defender in his own right…it takes alot of pressure off of him when you have another elite defender on your squad that focused totally on defense and gave you the ball.

  • Fat Lever

You’re giving one super alpha male the choice to pick a teammate. You think he’s going to pick another super alpha male? In Malone’s head, he probably figures Pippen is the perfect complementary player because he will defer to Malone.

  • mdshuaiu33

@ Euroforce: No, its like picking a guy who was well known throughout the league for being a fantastic teammate, and that Malone thought would be a great fit to building a team. And his point was that in 94 when Jordan was gone, the bulls really weren’t very good – they were the same team, just without the greatest player ever – and they still won 55 games because Pippen was a beast that year. I understand what he’s saying, and its not a stupid argument, he’s trying to build a winning hypothetical team and he feels Pippen would be a better fit with him than Jordan, and I don’t necessarily disagree. Although I actually do; no one could guard Jordan, not even Scottie.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

“Hey Kobe, would you rather play with LeBron or Dwight?” See? Most proud stars won’t pick the player better than them.

  • Jake

Karl would also like to start a franchise with Joe Johnson instead of Kobe.

  • ash

Thank you @charliewinning! Its like ppl lose there common sense when it ccomes to MJ

  • http://blackamericaweb.com charliewinning

Basic intelligence tends to fly out the window around here when you mention MJ, Kobe, or Lebron.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkhGPrEMx5c The Mauve Avenger

Honestly I don’t see why anyone cares. All 3 are retired and their legacies are cemented. Let’s move on.

  • alex80

    it is possible @NBA 2K

  • EuroForce

@mdshuaiu33:don’t try to put some sense on what Karl said. How many replies a “Karl Malone Would Start a Team With Michael Jordan Instead of Scottie Pippen” headline would get?Although i tend to loose common sense when it comes to MJ(or Spanny,ha,ha..)

  • lakernation

LISTEN CLONES! He said if he was starting a team as an NBA OWNER he would pick Pippen over Jordan. WHAT FOOL IN THERE RIGHT MIND WOULDNT PICK JORDAN over PIPPEN based on what he knows about Jordan? You dudes are idiots…. comments on here never fit the story.

  • lakernation

that was pointed at charliewinning and ash by the way.

  • http://blackamericaweb.com charliewinning

“Malone made a surprising choice when asked which member of the Dream Team — other than longtime Utah Jazz teammate John Stockton — he would have started a team with that included himself.”….I suggest you learn how to read, fool. You clearly don’t know what the words “THAT INCLUDED HIMSELF” mean, dumb@ss.

  • lakernation

@charliewinning the question is asked to him in an nba owner perspective, it didnt ask if he could play with anyone besides john stockton who would you pick…. It specifically asked who would you pick! U trying to make sense of it all but its still a dumb choice STUPID! WHO WOULD YOU PICK?

  • lakernation

start your team with pippen? REALLY DUDE!

  • http://blackamericaweb.com charliewinning

I just quoted the damn article. It was a DIRECT QUOTE. I don’t care how your illiterate @ss chooses to interpret it. You don’t understand what you read so I cannot respect any response from you on the subject.

  • lakernation

either way it goes you and Malone are idiots for trying to defend a reason why you would choose pippen over jordan to start a team….Because scottie’s a great team-mate! Nevertheless its a direct shot at Jordan because he states “Do you remember the time that Michael retired? I watched Scottie Pippen when the Chicago Bulls weren’t really good and Scottie led that team in every statistical category, and I just remembered that.” Key phrase “Chicago Bulls weren’t really good”

  • B.C.

This is exactly why this man has never won championships.

  • http://blackamericaweb.com charliewinning

You know nothing about basketball if you think that chemistry and meshing playing styles don’t matter. Furthermore it’s a team game so having one player– even the greatest player– isn’t as important as having a TEAM of talented players who form a cohesive unit. Jordan was hands down the best individual player for a minimum of five years before he won his first chip. It took him seven years until he had the right team and coach to win. Malone’s stupid statement about the Bulls not being good that one season doesn’t negate the fact that chemistry is more important than having just great player. Ask Lebron. Once again, no one is arguing who the better player is.

  • Ldub

Its a 2-part combo question. It says he would pick pippen to start a team (as an owner). Then under the context of him playing along side another player other than stockton…he would pick pippen. Either way PIP WINS! Whether he had beef with jordan or just likes what Pippen brings to the table more…its neither here nor there. This is Karl’s opinion. And just like charlie said….we all know that jordan is the much better overall player. but what if karl was an owner, we cant say he should pick jordan because we dont know what he is looking for in a player.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Keep It Real

Scottie Pippen is one of my fav players ever so im biased. But I agree with the mail man. 33 brought other things to the table beside just points.

  • whooo!

Charliewinning, I see your frustration, but I’m not sure you can argue logically with someone who doesn’t know how to read the article… let’s empathize and blame the educational system for not teaching these kids how to read… smh

  • Mega

Its a one part question, asking Malone as a GM who he would pick out of everyone on the roster including himself, minus Stock. He can pick one player, not 2, therefore Pip and Malone is not an option. Everyone commenting on how Malone wanted to play with a better teammate didnt hear or read the entire interview obviously.

  • bike

Malone has always been famous for saying things that freak people out. Pay no attention to the big guy with equally big mouth.

  • Mega

And since when is Pip a better teammate? Ya he was multifaceted and underpaid, but this guy walked off the court when Kukoc number was called!!! Did we all forget about this! Hahahahahaha at better teammate, more like Mike Jordan’s Subordinate.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

KMalone is correct and wrong at the same damn time. Young MJ was probably the most ball-dominant perimeter player of all-time but Post ’91/older MJ was a master at moving/scoring without the ball. It’s hard to be ball-dominant in Tex Winter’s Triangle Offense.

  • http://blackamericaweb.com charliewinning

Let me quote the article again….“Malone made a surprising choice when asked which member of the Dream Team — other than longtime Utah Jazz teammate John Stockton — he would have started a team with that included himself.” Yes, they asked him as a GM about a team that he would start that would also include himself. Co-sign Ldub and whooo!. Glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t have trouble reading.

  • Ldub

You can take this 1 of 2 ways. You can take it as “including himself in the team that he would start” or…the editor didnt add a comma and it means “including himself as a part of the dream team”…but i feel it is a 2 part statement. 1…who would u start with and 2 who would u play with other than stockton. Either way…its not worth debating about…like i said previously…dude has his reasons..made his reasons clear. Maybe Jordan put the dagger in his championship hopes too many times…sheeit idk. All we know is Karl has never held his tongue and its his opinion. I personally would pick Allen Iverson. why? cuz thats my damn opinion and I loved the way he played. Sure he doesnt pass, or play good on ball D…but for someone to be 6ft 165lbs and play with the passion and heart he did…id love to say that dude is my star or that is my teammate! boom…now knock me for that!

  • http://www.nba.com danfields

as an owner i would allways pick jordan over pippen. basketball is a team sport and sure jordan wouldnt have won without his teammates. but his greatness if far beyond reach among any other player in the history of the game.
as a player who plays on the team i would allways pick pippen over jordan. coz this guy allways has his teammates backs. jordan had a pretty all around game, too: rebounding, passing, defense, scoring, etc. but the main difference between these two characters is: a guy like pippen has to work for his team to be successfull. a guy like jordan needs a team that is working for him to be successfull. and they had a perfect mix over a decade in chicago.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

It sounds sexy to say Pipp…
But, naw it’s MJ every time.

  • http://nba.com GP23

Karl is just saying this for fun.. if he actually was a GM in a real-life situation, he would pick MJ in a heartbeat. He doesn’t really mean this. Come on now.

  • nick

The media is a joke and irresponsible BS like this is why….

If you listen to the actual interview, the question was asked and answered with Pip and Magic, and Dan Patrick and Malone were having fun with it and Malone said he’s a scorer so why would he want MJ who is a scorer as well.

Another example of a little snippet of a whole being taken and presented without any context for the sake of clicks. Any outlet that reports on this bit of “news” should be ashamed of itself, and not taken seriously by any reader.

I am no Malone fan, and think he’s overrated to begin with. But I heard the entire interview, and the overall jestful tone of wanting to be the only scorer, etc., and knew some outlet would try and run with it. Sure enough…..

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

i honestly don’t understand why my troll seriously comments as me? do you not get enough respect with your normal name or something? sh*t doesn’t make a bit of sense to use someone else’s name to post serious basketball opinions. it’s not even trolling, it’s just weird. i might just leave slam altogether and let y’all think i’m my troll forever. that’s apparently what he wants.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Seriously… that’s what I find to be lame about this troll.
It’s funny when your being funny, but why the hell post actual comments and try and get into discussions as another persons screen name. It seems like such a waste of time and so juvenile,
    BUT…. Do you troll.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

i just sent an e-mail to Ryne. If this sh*t isn’t fixed, i’m out. i love this site and talkin hoop with all of you. But this is just stupid.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

nbk anchors about 50% of the good discussions on SLAM, probably more lol. of course we ant you to stay, but SLAM’s comment section is one gaping @rse, so… see you on Twitter? lol. Maybe change your screen name? Trolls gonna be trolls, you know how that goes.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

sorry not the comment section, I meant comment *system. Nothing bad to saya bout the section of course.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Ryne got right back to me (much appreciated) – he said they are working hard to fix the issue. So as long as I’m being communicated with and the problem is in the process of being fixed, i’ll remain patient. it’s just been a bit frustrating the last few days. and it’s not even that i have a troll, it’s that my troll is now trying to use my name (for whatever reason) to have a real basketball discussion. sounds petty, but, i earned my reputation around here bruh, good or bad, i would like to be treated the way i’m treated for the things i actually say.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Teddy, you on Twitter? Or you just thinking about joining the fray?

  • nick

Yahoo has this bullsh*t story on their front page. Unreal how pathetic and transparent the media industry has become. Equally as disgraceful is the retard masses who eat it up blindly. What a joke.

  • Sollywood

Sounds to me like the Mailman is bitter about his package being RETURNED TO SENDER in the finals, twice!

  • freezy

Jordan carried the bulls in the 98 finals pretty much by himself while scottie had a bad back

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Nbk, I got the same problem as you. I’m tempted to just leave till the summer is over. Wouldn’t a log in system solve everything?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

yes it would. Ryne said they are working on it, and I trust him. He’s never lied to me in the past. And he’s not who told me they were fixing it 5 years ago.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

The Onion should do a report on this…
(Old deep voiced strange accented white dude voice)
“Trolls are attacking from all corners on our very own SLAM web page.”
“Web-Developers are looking for a way to get rid of them once and for all, but attempts have been rendered unsuccessful for the last 5 years.”
“Some long-time ‘SLAMmers’ are threatening to move themselves and their opinions away forever.”
    “Will these trolls be banished?”
“If not, will society on SLAM go on as usual?”
“Will there be a new ‘spanny’?”
“Questions remain, one thing is for sure, these trolls have found themselves a bridge to live under, and they aren’t going to stop ‘trolling’ till they get what they want… And that’s your attention…”
You won trolls. 1-0, you guys. Congrats.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

We won? Somebody put on a queen CD

  • http://facebook.com/tronjohnson Chief

What a tool, yeah and I’d take Messier over Gretzky…what a moron. You just want to be able to get away with grown men in short shorts in your squad Malone.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Question nbk, how would we be sure that we get to register our own names first before the trolls do? Like, what if your impostor registers the name “nbk” before you get a chance? There’s gotta be some way to blockade that…

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I don’t know the logistics of how they are going to solve the problem. But if nbk gets taken I ain’t gonna be too stressed. If you want my reputation THAT bad, take it. You won’t fool people for long.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Haha fair enough. I guess my rep on a basketball site isn’t that valuable (especially since I’m not an “elite” commenter). If Slam can just get something put together, it’d make things so much better. What’s frustrating is that my troll does occasionally make grammatically correct statements. Your troll is rather…easy to spot.

  • http://blackamericaweb.com Caboose

Wah wah wah. Mama, I want milk. My troll this my troll that, I want a troll. Wtf are trolls status symbols? You prostitutes are amazing. This jackarse thinks he made it as a commenter if he gets a troll. How about u get a girlfriend? Now if you’ll excuse me, the great Dev0, I have some poon to get into.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Well I hope real nbk and real caboose are happy with themselves. You interupted fake caboose’s poon!

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

I’m all broken up about it

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

You should be. The man just wanted to watch some POON. Is that too much to ask.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    It’s DevO…talk about a cry for attention.

  • Kobester

Didn’t Barkley pick Toney Andrews over MJ on his team back in the days as well? MJ is the greatest but that doesn’t mean he can co-exist with anybody on a championship team. Do you really think MJ and Dominique Wilkins on one team can win 6 rings?

  • http://blackamericaweb.com Caboose

Bike has had a troll since forever. Where is his sympathy? Or are the pity parties only for the two SLAMers with delusions of grandeur?

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Two other teams picked players other than MJ…. Ewing, Bowie… look how that fared….

  • Chris S.

@JTaylor21: hard to be ball dominant in the triangle?? Kobe says hello! As a matter of fact, Jordan always demanded a high number of shots, and this did not change with the introduction of the triangle. He was still a gunner. Also; Jordan’s game changed after his first retirement, but not for the better. More jumpshots and fadeaways made him less effective than he was at his peak. His improved post game did not compensate for the decline of athleticism.

Back to topic, if you think about it, it is not crazy what Malone is saying. Pippen is one of the best SF of all time, and his greatest strenght was making everyone else better. His 93-94 campaign is the ultimate proof of this. How else do you explain that the world’s greatest basketball player quits on your team just before the season starts (the Bulls were upset that Jordan never gave them a change to make the necessary adjustments), but your team does not miss a beat, and nearly makes it back to the Finals?

I also remember an interview with John Stockton after the Finals in 97, where he was asked what was the most difficult aspect about facing the Bulls. Stockton answered: “Scottie Pippen. He was in the way.. a lot”.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Delusions of grandeur? And how exactly did I convey that?

  • TheWhiteMarkPrice

@Dacre, Hakeem the dream was no.1 in Jordan draft class.

  • http://slamonline.com Mars

Still bitter after all these years. LMAO. Funny stuff. Pip is a legit pick tho. MJ must be cracking up. Like damn, Karl probably hates the number 23, and Byron Russell is STILL on his SL.

  • http://www.starting5.com.au NM30

And if I had to pick a team, malones country ass wouldn’t be on it

  • JoshGaloff

what the damn hell. two thirds of the people posting these dumbass comments need to learn how to read first. In the interview he is asked which other player he’d place next to him and John Stockton already on the team.
