Out of Shape Charlie Villanueva Cut from Dominican National Team

Charlie Villanueva showed up to play for the Dominican National Team, but coach John Calipari sent him packing because he thought the Pistons’ forward was overweight. Per the Detroit News (via BDL): “After dealing with injuries for the entire lockout-shortened season for the Pistons — he didn’t play any significant minutes — he won’t play for the Dominican Republic national team because he’s out of shape, head coach John Calipari said. ‘Charlie was not in good form when we saw him,’ Calipari told Deportes en la Z. ‘He was overweight, and unfortunately, we could not slow down the entire team and it was a decision taken collectively. Last year, Charlie behaved really well with us and his only problem was his weight.’ Villanueva never was in camp with the team this summer, contrary to the FIBA.com report that said he had a private workout with the team in New York. It’s believed the team wasn’t pleased with his conditioning last summer, which led to the decision, after being a big part of the national team in recent years. An ankle injury slowed his progress and any hopes of getting much playing time for the Pistons this season. Villanueva posted a picture on Twitter of him stepping on a weight scale, showing he’s at 243.5 pounds, at least 10 pounds less than his playing weight of 255 pounds. ‘Lol case closed’ he wrote in a Tweet. He’s under contract for the next two seasons with the Pistons, and it seems unlikely they’d use the Amnesty Clause to cut Villanueva’s $16.6 million cap figure he’d earn over that time. ‘An NBA player like him deserves respect and for respect, we have taken this decision,’ Calipari said. ‘I enjoyed coaching him a lot. He is a great player.’ Villanueva, 27, played only 13 games for the Pistons last season because of injury.”

243 for a 6-10 dude isn’t overwieght…now if Calipari would have just said “He sucks” this would make more sense.

    What a clown..

yeah… calipari didn’t say what he wanted to say. it seems like a case of “you’re not giving maximum effort so i’ll therefore assume that you’re out of shape instead of saying publicly that you have no heart”

co-sign Wayno. Although, being a Pistons fan, he probably just wanted an opportunity to ish on Charlie V.

  • Derek Fisher

Charlie V has the muscle mass of a gummy bear.

@ LA – This is true…although I also think he hasn’t been properly utilized since going to Detroit…I still think he sucks though. I’m just not a fan of big men who are alergic to the paint, and don’t play a lick of defense.

I heard that Charlie shaved off all his body hair to knock off a couple of pounds for the weigh-in…

Either Calipari misspoke and really meant to say “out of shape” instead of overweight (there is a huge difference between the two), or he really just didn’t like the guy. Oh well, I don’t feel sorry for a guy who refuses to live up to his potential.

@DANNYB……..yo shut up I got the same condition as Charlie V & I’ve met him a couple of times now when he’s in Toronto. Dont make fun of him cause he has no hair. Make fun of him because he sucks as a ball player. I mean my hair grew back and I’m doing fine but when ppl start talking ish because of this condition called “Alopecia Areata” it makes me mad.

Once CV is amnestied, he should take his talents to South Beach to join Eddy Curry on the buffet line.

hes a good player when he tries. Too bad he’s one lazy a*s dude. My cousin and my brother used to play with him and his cousin down in DR and I seriously have no idea what made this dude so lazy, he was a beast years ago.

    @ Riggs – $$$ is what made him lazy…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

he’s actually 10lbs under his playing weight.

  • LA Huey

I always thought he could be a great role player but not a 1st, 2nd, 3rd option. But if dude can’t make it on the PR National Team (no disrespect to them but they aint no Spain or France) he’s straight up garbage.

DR. He’s Dominican, not Puerto Rican.

  • LA Huey

    Type. My bad.

Not being overwieght doesn’t mean he’s in shape though…just so we’re clear.

  • dannyb

@BRAVO – Sorry man, I didn’t mean any offense. My apologies.

  • LA Huey

So apparently Charlie V put out a picture of him on a scale proving he’s not overweight…I guess he simply proved he straight up got cut.

  • Bravo

@DANNYB…….hey man no worries most ppl don’t even know about this condition.
