Paul Pierce Happy That LeBron James Also Fouled Out

Though not happy with his own fouling out situation — the third time he’s been booted out of a Playoff game in this series alone — Paul Pierce took great satisfaction in watching LeBron James exit the stage early as well. From the Boston Herald: “Paul Pierce fouled out last night for the third time since Game 7 against Philadelphia. It’s about time he had some company, though LeBron James insisted that his aggressive post-up on Mickael Pietrus in overtime didn’t deserve a whistle. No matter. The Celtics captain liked the call. ‘It was very frustrating. But it’s very gratifying when you see the other star player foul out also,’ Pierce said after last night’s 93-91 overtime win over Miami at the Garden, which tied the Eastern Conference finals at 2. ‘It evened up the playing field. He never has a lot of fouls, but we were aggressive against him tonight. We stepped up twice to take charges, and drove. That’s what you have to do. Not a lot of players try to attack him. It’s not often that he plays against top small forwards in the league also. He gets a lot of nights off.’”

Bron gets EVERY 50/50 charge/block call. It’s about time some went against him.

  • ENDS

agreed, though pierce is a punk

  • Zack

Didn’t think either of the fouls that got these guys out of the game were that serious. Especially in the Playoffs. The foul they called on Garnett though, was definitely a foul.

Neither of their 6th fouls were good calls. I think the refs got tired of the chippy play and started to tighten it up.

Haha anyone else catch the last couple sentences? “It’s not often that he plays against top small forwards in the league also.” Seriously pierce?

  • deafballer

Yeah thats all I can think about when I read this article, is Pierce really calling himself one of the top small fowards in the league?

  • Jerome

@23: I think he is serious. Who has LeBron played that is better thatn Pierce this year? Pierce is a threat every possession on both ends of the floor. Honestly this series would not be very competitive if Boston had a full roster.

Pierce is one of the best SF’s in the league.
Give me 3 better SF’s not named KD or Lebron.

    Floppers …. Floppers everywhere

  • deafballer

I understand the point you’re making but still, is it necessary for him to say that? If Lebron said something like “its not often he gets to play against the best player in the NBA” he would be receiving a lot of flack.

  • Lloyd

Neither last call was good for either guy. However, I’m not too upset about it because the bad calls went both ways. Hate when refs determine the outcome of games. @awkwardaaron if you want to see a battle of the floppers, watch Manu and Harden checking each other. It’s hilarious in it’s ridiculousness

@Jerome: Carmelo anthony was much better vs. lebron james in the first round than paul pierce. & that is on both ends… Lebron avg 27.8ppg on 47.8% from the field with 6.2rpg and 5.6assists per game versus carmelo. Lebron is averaging 32.5ppg on 51.6% shooting averaging 9.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists vs. pierce. Pierce has only scored on 19.8ppg on 37% shooting this series while melo went for 27.8ppg on 41% against lebron… so ya Lebron has guarded a tougher matchup these playoffs. Besides… Lebron guards multiple positions that are harder to stop than pierce. Pierce btw doesn’t even play good D anymore guys. All he does is hold. Look at lebron’s fouls and look at pierce’s fouls. If i counted correctly, 3 of lebron’s fouls were offensive fouls. One of his fouls was a double foul (which was ridic) with him and KG in the paint. Pierce literally hacked 4 times and had 2 offensive fouls (the battier one and i forget the other) but pierce earned the majority of his. Besides… lebron didn’t even guard pierce most of the game. he had 2 guard other guys. But ya… lebron played a tougher SF in the first round v. this one.

If it was all so simple.
Carmelo was a no. 1 option, without any other scorer except Stoudemire due to injuries, that had to carry the load in a system that was designed for him to score.
Pierce is playing in a much more team oriented offense that lets everybody score. Right now Pierce is focused on defense and thats OK.
Numbers don’t show you everything. And to say Pierce is not one of the prime SF’s in the league is wrong.
He will do his scoring but right now Doc is fine with him maintaing LeBeast.

The 6th foul on Pierce was very legit. He just outright ran into Battier because he wasn’t looking where he was going (had eyes on the ball instead). Agree that LeBron got shafted on his 6th foul though.

Deafballer, well, Lebron gets a lot of flack for anything he says, and he wouldn’t be wrong :)

Eye for an Eye with the foul outs

  • MeloMan15

Pierce is definetely a top 5 sf

  • Fish sticks

The 6th foul on pierce was a textbook charge taken by one of the leagues best in Shane battier. No question there. The one that fouled lebron out was iffy at best, but probably evened out a lot if the 50/50 calls that go in his favour.

  • Zack

Granger, Iggy, Rudy Gay, Melo, all better than Pierce…

  • Zack

Pierce just plays exceptionally well against LeBron. Which is why I hate him.

  • SiMoney

Although Pierce is a really good player, Carmelo is a wayyy better SF than him, can’t say Rudy Gay or Granger but definitely Melo, but PP is a top 5 SF in the L hands down

  • chamlett

You all are funny naming guys that are better than Paul P. But they are got knocked out off the playoffs. How many times does the Celtics have to beat Leborn. He can switch teams all he wants, he need to switch leagues. I guess you don’t remember Paul busting Lebron for 38 and knocking him out of the playoffs. Paul scored a career high 50 against the Cavs to me which was a better team than the heat come on. Paul is an NBA finals MVP and champ. 3 point champ etc. He is almost unguardable at times. And that 6th foul was bogus. How can Paul walk into another basketball player that was a first ground pick grown man and make him fly in the air to the ground what a flop. I hope the Celtics and Paul smash the heat tonight. I’m not even going to mention Rondo what a mismatch. How many Rondo highlights have Lebron been in his life too many.

L.E. Posted: Jun.4 at 2:06 pm makes the most sense out of everyones posts…we can go back and forth forever but it remains that 4 games are gone and it’s time for the 5th. BTW PP’s charge was legit in the essence of the call but was not a “run you over” type since Battier knows how to “draw” the charge. LBJ’s 6th was a 50/50 but I agree that he gets away with most. PP is one of the top SF’s in the L and has been for a long time now. If the best players in the L say he is I take their word on it.
