Blake Griffin to Undergo Left Knee Surgery, Will Miss Olympics

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

The news went from bad to worse for Blake Griffin and Team USA yesterday.

The LA Clippers’ star forward left Vegas with a medial meniscus tear of his left knee, for which he will undergo surgery, and won’t play for the United States in the Olympic Games.

But it’s not all bad. Doctors expect Griffin to be ready for training camp.

Reports the LA Times:

Blake Griffin has been diagnosed with a meniscus tear in his left  knee and will have arthroscopic surgery probably early next week, according to NBA executives who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. Griffin will not be playing for the U.S. Olympic team in London later this month, but he will be available for Clippers training camp that starts in October.

Griffin is expected to be out about eight weeks recovering from the injury and should be fine and ready to play when the season starts, the executives said.

This is obviously terrible news for all parties involved, but the Clippers have to be feeling a sense of relief since the tear is considered small, and Blake Griffin is expected to recover in time for next season.

Here are head coach Vinny Del Negro’s thoughts on the injury: “We’re relieved that this does not affect Blake’s ability to be ready in time for training camp,” said Clippers’ Head Coach Vinny Del Negro. “Missing out on the Olympic experience will be tough for him to take. I know how dedicated he was to doing that. We’re glad we can get this fixed now and take advantage of the available time for him to fully recover.”

    Clipper Curse period.

  • Marc

Sucks for him that he gets to miss the olympic experience. But he is still young and he is going to play in future olympic games. And at least he will be healthy for the season.

  • Niio

wow I was really hoping his injury wasn’t this serious to need surgery, hope him a speedy recovery

  • bdogg

for a young guy that is huge he gets injured a ton! good luck and i have to agree …clipper curse!!! cp3…leave while you can!

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHoliday

Hope he doesnt have an injury plagued career. Speedy recovery to you! Somewhere in the world, Pau Gasol just took a deep sigh of relief!

    Must be those Adid…er, Nikes?

^Its the new Nike+ system. if you don’t reach your vertical leap goals, it zaps out your meniscus.

  • Your Friendly Neighborhood Dopeman

Hate to see the big man get injured. Not a clips fan but those dunks are vicious.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Stop dunking hard and work on a post game and get a midrange shot, to save those knees ten years from now or you will be nothing but Vince Carter Jr. Highlights at the beginning, lowlights in the end.

  • Valkyrie

This is why anyone who knocks a player for not wanting to participate in the Olympics or the Worlds is a fool.

  • James aka…

Sadly the Seed is correct here.

There were a lot of posters on here who were shouted down as haters for pointing out that BG lands very akwardly when he dunks, but physics is physics, and that kind of akward shock can lead to some major wear and tear, punctuated by injuries like this.

All these young cats that use athleticism as their main strength are either already paying the price or soon will. This is why Kobe is going on his 17th. He stopped jumping around like a damn fool and honed real skills.

How does one do prevention training for these type of knee ligament tears????? I never see this discussed

  • thenatural

blake obvi should’ve signed with adidas… funny that the shoes blake wears were designed by jason petrie…

You really don’t. The best thing to do is constantly massage the area before/after playing and using ice and stim. Sometimes you just can’t protect the ligaments. I tore mine right off the bone in police explorer academy and it was just a freak accident.

  • Niio

T-Ray I feel you I tore my achilles tendon one month before police academy, I still went though and lasted 2 weeks before they sent me home for surgery. I’m recovering and looking to re-enlist in september

I applaude you for trying to go through. I was only 17 so of course I wasn’t able to join the police academy so I became an explorer. Good luck on a speedy recovery and congrats in advance in graduating. If you have the heart to still go through with a torn achilles you should knock it out the second time around.

  • ironman

With All that heavy muscle mass combine with his insane explosion im not surprised this happened. As much as id love 2 see him embarrass some euros I was surprised he was gonna play in the Olympics after he had those knee scares in the playoffs. A guy who plays the way he does needs to take his off season rest seriously

  • Ldub

Good points ironman….I think he should slow his game down a bit. Dude is crazy explosive, but that will only last so long. If he uses his explosiveness at certain times instead of 100%. His career will be much longer.

T-Ray the explorer, how does that sound Dora?

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

Sounds good to me as long as you add Sergeant to that.

  • EJ

    Sucks for international fans.

  • bike

May be a parallel situation to Amar’e. Before his microfracture sugery, Amare’s game was similar to Blake’s–attempting crazy dunks from 18 ft. out, etc. Amar’e was not the same player after his knee operations. Blake may not be either.

  • MtotheS

Ugh I was hoping for Weis 2.0

    Damn that sucks.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

This injury is completely minor. Will have no affect on his career.

  • don the GSW fan

it would be great if an adidas designer tweeted jason petrie about blake’s injury. smh. crazy people at nike

  • eazy_

no such thing as a minor injury

  • SeanMagicJuan

Does everything in the basketball universe revolve around Kobe? Some of you dudes are obsessive with “that’s why Kobe…….” comments on EVERY article. Give it a rest or go to a Lakers blog.

  • ktokyo

Lob City is about to become Sob City.

  • barnabusb

    Word, eazy_.

  • backboard

I just absolutely hate when nbk says what “will” happen. Like he nastradamus or sthmg. Seen it so many times … get your head out your behind

Who’s hating on this thread Mars? Sometimes I think the word “hater” is thrown around too loosely.

  • bigA
