Brook Lopez Reportedly Close to Max Deal from Brooklyn Nets

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

For now, the prevailing wisdom around the NBA, appears to be that the proposed Dwight Howard trade to Brooklyn has fallen apart.

There’s now increased chatter of Dwight possibly heading to Los Angeles, as part of another complex three-team deal.

Which opens the door for the Nets to ink restricted free agent center Brook Lopez to a maximum level contract, which reportedly could be finalized today.

Per Yahoo! Sports:

Nets president Billy King and Lopez’s agent, Arn Tellem, are finalizing the length of the deal – four years for $58 million, or five years for $78 million – and ironing out protections on the back end to account for a right foot that Lopez broke twice in the past year, sources said.

As close as the Nets and Lopez are on a deal, several sources wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Lopez still signing an offer sheet with another team for the full four-year, $58 million maximum contract if the final details are unable to be worked out. The Charlotte Bobcats have shown the most interest in signing Lopez to a max sheet, sources said. The Nets would undoubtedly match, but signing the offer sheet would be a way for Lopez to avoid any partial guarantees based on games that the Nets might want in his deal. King is scheduled to travel to Los Angeles on Wednesday to work on completing the deal with Tellem.

It all remains very fluid at this point, with Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic’s front-office holding much of the NBA hostage until a decision is finally made.

Should Brook Lopez ink his deal with the Brooklyn Nets, he can’t be part of any trade package until January 15.

In the land of the blind…
    one eye is king.

  • ALD

so what would you gm’s pay lopez then?

  • ALD

and he averages 7.5 for his career.. Ppl act like he’s terrible.

  • O

What was the point to last year’s lockout again?!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

ALD – If I was Brooklyn, I would pay whatever it takes to keep him. Assuming I can’t get Dwight in a trade.

  • beasting

    @nbk lol. I don`t read comments that aren`t fluid.

  • http://www.nba.com/2012/news/features/david_aldridge/07/09/morning-tip-free-agency/index.html Allenp

    ALD
I would pay him the max to keep him in Brooklyn because otherwise they suck.
But he still rebounds like trash. 7.5 is not acceptable for your starting center. It’s just not.

In the land of the blind being king is worthless.

  • LA Huey

Whatever. They just need to get their roster set so they can reveal their jerseys. I’ve already picked my side in the NBA’s New York rivalry. I wanna see what my boys’ threads look like.

  • toinefan88

Some wishful thinkers in here. The Nets need to do the Dwight trade or something similarly epic to be contenders for a title. Brook Lopez doesn’t get you that. Decent big but not gonna put you over the top.

If Then Nets team is what we see here: Deron, JJ, Wallace, Lopez *some other guy*.
    AND
The Knick’s are what we see: Kidd/Lin, Smith, Melo, Amare, Tyson/Camby.
Who ya’ll think is the better team?
They seem pretty even to me. Should be a fun Eastern Conference this year also.
Can’t wait to see these teams next year:
    T-Wolves
    Lakers
    Clippers
    Heat
    Celtics
    Nets
    Cavs
    Wizards
    Warriors
    Sac-Town
    Good stuff this next year.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The Nets Starting Lineup WILL be (if Dwight doesn’t happen)
    .- Deron Williams
    .- Joe Johnson
    .- Gerald Wallace
    .- Mirza Teletovic
    .- Brook Lopez

  • ALD

so if rebounded at 8.6 like he did his second year, does he deserve the max deal without the the nets situation?

  • http://Slamonline.com 19821982

^^ same here. Yeah, there’s a few bottom of the barrel teams, but I was unabashedly for the “super team” trend. Saturated talent meant a lot of games were unwatchable…

  • anonymous

BL and Hibbert r both worth max money as of rite now. If either franchise let their respective player walk there would be no way to justify it (unless howard came strollin thru the doors). And didnt BL avg 8.6 boards as a soph? Ya I dont think that even half of these negative commenters have really watched this dude play. BL 58 mil 7.5 rpg or Amare 100 mil 8.8 rpg, which would u rather have? Tough call, I think I’d go with BL just cuz for what he does, Amare is not worth 100 mil in my mind.

  • Sérgio

Even if the Nets don’t land Dwight, I still think they can be a 3rd seed in the East, only behind Miami and Boston. Atlanta and Orlando will fall dramatically, and I think the Nets are better than Indiana.

  • Sérgio

Also, the Bulls will be without Rose for most of the year, so I predict them to be a 7th or 8th seed. And I woudn’t be surprised if they stay out of the Playoffs.

  • Heals

@LS, League Pass is bordering on addiction now. After you get it for one season, it’s incredibly EASY to talk yourself into the season after that and so on until you can’t fathom having a season go by without it. For those without it always remember it’s free the 1st week of the season and 1st week after the all-star break…

Man, the Nets also have Marshon Brooks and Gerald Wallace lurking. And they got Reggie Evans.
They are already better than the Knicks simply because three or four of their starting five is committed to playing serious defense.
Deron, Gerald, Joe Johnson and REggie Evans play defense. Brook is passable. The Knicks have more talent, but they have non-defenders playing 1-4.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Oh… pfft. There ain’t no going back to no LP for me haha.
I NEED those games like I need oxygen lol.

  • eZ

Yes, the starting line up will be
    Williams
    Johnson
    Wallace
    Evans
    Lopez
Thats a beasting lineup and can easily challenge any team in the nba. Man Evans is the most underrated signing of this postseason. Can’t believe he was available. If miami had only pursued him, they couldve secured their dynasty for real. Now the’ve gone all in on offense but will remain defensively challenged in the paint.
Anyways evans game complements lopez nicely, as he plays a bit further away from the basket. Evans makes humpries expendable at probably 1/6 the price. The Teletovic guy sounds like an ideal sixt man, no nba experience, looking to score and not much else.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

That won’t be their starting lineup. Mirza Tetovic is the Brooklyn Nets starting 4. Guaranteed. No matter what happens this off-season. And Humphries isn’t “expendable” – he’s just not coming back.

  • eZ

Nbk, Unless you have a direct line with avery johnson, i will disagree with you. TeleTovic is by all accounts a shoot first not looking to pass offensive player without nba experience. Not a good fit alongside weak rebounding and offensive oriented lopez i would think. But great as a sixt men, scoring of the bench for the second unit. Evans is the perfect complement for lopez. Post banger rebounder, hustle, defense.
Now if dwight comes over i agree with you.
Humpries is expendable because his offense is easily replaced by all the new additions. His real value lies in hustle and rebounding, which is something evans does better. …. I think.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I don’t have a direct line to Avery Johnson, but all i’ve been hearing for the last 2 months is that Teletovic will be the starting 4. And he is a better rebounder then you are giving him credit for. Plus, the NBA game fits him better than Europe did. Plus, his “shoot first not lookin to pass” style is just reflective of his role in Europe. Where many regarded him as the best player in the Euro Leagues. In the NBA he will understand his role, he knows coming over that he is no longer the go-to guy.

  • eZ

But Evans has been working on his 3pt shot and playmaking abilities, so..
    Lol..
But seriously, if the reports and assumptions you mention all become true, teletovic will be the guy

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Not saying i disagree that Evans is a better fit with Lopez. Just what i’m hearing is Teletovic will be starting no matter who the Center next to him is. And Kris Humphries will not return to Brooklyn, sign and trade or not. The whole Jay-Z being best friends with Kanye West who is married to his ex wife Kim K being the main reason he doesn’t want to be there anymore. As tabloidish as that sounds.

  • eZ

Kris humpries should stay with the nets and start an affair with Beyonce

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    haha that would be awesome.

  • http://minusthebars.blogspot.com don

Ain’t no way. I cannot recall not one Brook Lopez outstanding game.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Brook Lopez went for 39-11-4 (on 14 of 20) against Detroit in 2011. That’s outstanding.

  • eZ

He is an outstanding offensive center, but ryan anderson gets 9 mil a year so lopez wants max.

  • LA Huey

What are the odds of a 4/5 3/6 match up between Nets and Knicks in 2013 playoffs?

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Really high^
    No problem Huey.

  • truthteller

This could be Brooke Lopez breakout year! it better be with the money they are paying him!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Ya’ll hear Kobe saying today’s USA team would beat the Dream Team. Shot’s fired by Bean.

  • LA Huey

LakeShow, I hope your odds are accurate.
I saw Mamba’s comments. I’d be disappointed in him if he didn’t.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Kobe said what?! I didn’t see this. Oh lord, he’s going down in flakes

    Flames* fail

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

@NBK. If Teletovic starts at the the 4 we will get killed on the boards. That doesn’t make any sense at all. He practically lives on the perimeter. Career average 4.7 boards per 28 min or so, .405 from three. He should back up Crash at the three spot. Slashing for shooting. We need Hump and Wedgie at the 4. No way Brooklyn can afford running an experiment with an unproven European playing out of position. Stakes are very high.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Have you actually seen him play?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

@lake I looked it up, LOL I love how in turn Ibaka said Spain matches up talent wise with USA.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

LOL, yes, all things with a grain of salt.
You know, I got my money on Dream team, BUT… It’s not by a large margin of victory. In a best of 7 series. I got Dream team in 7…

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

Have you watched him jump off 2 feet. He will get abused in the post by a long list of very athletic PF’s.
Use him to his strengths, keep his confidence up. He’s like a carbon copy of Linas Kleiza with accurate aim, slightly less athleticism.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Naw, he’s not a carbon copy of Linas Kleiza. He’s 6’9 for one. And he plays the 4, for another. If he’s a 4 in Europe, you think he’d be a 3 in the nba? And you think athletic 4′s pose more of a problem than athletic 3′s? Where is the logic behind that idea?

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

You keep hearing well hear this!!!!!!

Can you name a precedent… coming from the Balkan region, that was 6’10 or less and dominated the PF position. I bet you can’t! Because Croatia basketball doesn’t bother with producing dominant Power Forwards, they produce shooters. You would know that if you had played against 15/16 year old Croatian kids who at 6’8, 6’9, 6’10 and would do nothing but shoot long range despite their height advantage.
    Trust me!

So here we drafted a SF/PF who possibly is a liability on D and a mediocre defensive rebounder, but can create his own shot and shoots the lights out. We know we have 2 proven beasts on the boards which is all we need since we have scoring covered at the 1,2,3 and 5 spots.

So we go after Mirza but it’s a hard sell cause he’s the man in Europe and might want to stay. We just signed Wallace to a contract who is a definite starter at SF, so the PF spot is dangled since we don’t have a household name there and told him we’ll pay you X amount and plus you’ll have the starting spot.
Next day they propose him a reduced contract change(monetary) for the greater good. It seems he’s still on board.

But according to NBK mysterious sources he’s got the PF locked down and Hump who was the heartbeat of the Franchise these past 2 yrs is getting shipped because the minority owners rhyme buddy who lives in the Chi is humpin his ex.

Where do you pull this info out off… Mad Magazine. Then you point out that Kleiza is 1 inch shorter than Mirza and therefore not at all the same and dare question my logic.

I’m not suprised, we’ve been here before.
Whether your sources are right or wrong the scenario doesn’t make sense.
What makes sense is him coming of the bench in his first year as a 6th man, behind Wallace since he’s the oldest on the roster (I assume). Lopez needs help down low and Teletovic is not the one who will give it to him. If used as a PF his career in the NBA will be a dud.

correction. My references to Croatia are false and should say Yugoslavian basketball and Yugoslavian kids.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

He’s not playing the 3. He is not a carbon copy of Kleiza. He’s a less athletic Power Forward who has similar strengths. If Humphries stays (which I am constantly hearing likely won’t happen) then he will not start. But other than that he will. Just because YOU call him a 3 (with whatever dumb logic comes with taking an unathletic player and putting him against the most athletic guys in the league) doesn’t mean anybody else does. Nobody has projected him to play the 3 at the NBA level. Not one person. If he doesn’t start then that’s fine with me. Not saying I think he should, just that I’m hearing he will. And I know he’s not playing the 3, because he’s not athletic enough. Or should I say, he’s not close enough to a Carbon Copy of Linas Kleiza?
    .
(Popular NBA comparisons, Al Harrington, Brian Cardinal, Ryan Anderson, Brian Scalabrine) – none of which being a small forward. Or Linas Kleiza.

Nbk v dutchrich. Your both giving 110%.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

And I hope your mysterious sources, which have been telling you SINCE WAY BEFORE THE DRAFT that Teletovic would start for the Nets at the 4 (go figure), are completely wrong as it would be a complete waste of his talents. We are talking about my team here so I have vested interest to make sure this guy is properly used. Both his clip and attempts from 3 are of the charts, top scorer in Europe who wants the ball at clutch moments. We need players that can stretch the floor. He does not need to be playing with his back against the basket in the NBA against the likes of Garnett, Bosh, Love, Griffin, Amare, Gasol etc.
You find critique in the Kleiza comparison who is THE go to guy on his national team and then compare the top European scorer to the likes of Brian Cardinal and Scalabrine. What’s wrong with you.
If you’re gonna make comparisons try to make it convincing,
