Brooklyn Nets to Sign Gerald Wallace to Four-Year, $40 Million Deal

No word on if they’ll re-sign Deron Williams just yet, but the Brooklyn Nets have made one move—locking up swingman Gerald Wallace to a four-year deal. ESPN is on it: “The Brooklyn Nets reached a verbal commitment with swingman Gerald Wallace on a four-year deal worth $40 million, according to sources close to the process. The Nets have been openly confident in their ability to re-sign Wallace, who opted out of the final year of his contract last month with the intent of staying with the Nets. No new contracts in the NBA can be officially signed until July 11, but sources told ESPN.com that Wallace — originally expected to land a three-year deal worth $24 million — will instead land the four-year deal. Wallace opted out of the $9.5 million he was originally scheduled to earn in 2012-13 on June 15 to proceed to free agency.”

So hold on… for the past year, I can’t comment what so ever because SLAM STILL hasn’t fixed their comment problems they have had for the past 6 years. I can finally start commenting again but every comment I post goes under moderation. Yet the first comment on this post can go through with no trouble at all? Interesting. God love ya SLAM, but this is a very strong reason on why it’s hard to come here everyday and comment.

Overpaid. 4-5 milion / year will be generous. He put some plays on Youtube, but no one team offered him more than 1 milion never…. Is not serious. 10 milion!

    cosign Zogs1

  • Sue

Sorry. I was thinking in Gerald Green. Wallace great player but also overpaid.

the 3-yr, $24 mil would have made more sense for bk because $8 mil is abt how much wallace is worth but $2 mil over isnt too bad. wallace should be the starting sf next season which means that rumors of joe johnson coming to bk is probably dead and that`s great news. bk doesnt need johnson`s heavy, over-the-top contract on their books. next up for bk trade for dwight and sign deron in no particular order.

    cosing ZOGS!

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

    slightly over paid

  • james

good player but he is overpaid unless he can prove me wrong this next season

Sounds like a contract the will handicap the Nets in about 2 years when it’s clear as day that they over paid. They could’ve saved a couple mill.or some years

Why would you give an older player who relies on athleticism a long-term deal?

  • http://bebe310.blogspot.com/ anonymous

@caboose was thinking the same thing. the 3-yr deal made more sense. if Im bk I keep wallace at no more than 30 mpg as a starter and use gerald green (6-8) and shawne williams (6-9) at sf off the bench. they have less mileage on them, are better from three and could use the experience if bk gets to the PO

  • http://bebe310.blogspot.com/ anonymous

@caboose did you here abt bk looking to land joe johnson? is there any truth to this?

  • ash

I agree the 3 year deal is much better. Slighty overpaid.

  • B.C.

Way overpaid for a player that’s not even a superstar and not even a consistent scorer.

it`s unanimous billy king has made yet another ??? deal. Mikhail Prokhorov better put king under a microscope if wants bk to have a future.

  • Heals

Still think Ticket’s deal is too much? That’s why I thought it was funny that commentors were critical of $11mil for KG, while most those around the team were more than happy with the deal. Not saying you guys were out of line in your criticism of Kev’s deal or this one, it’s just that the L has real weird balance going on with contract $$$’s and which guys fit in which pay-scale group…

Waaay too much. Horrible deal. This is atrocious.

  • Dungeon Family

@ZOGS1 sit yo lame ass down before them BK niggas snatch yo ass up

  • MikeC.

Why was there a lockout? I thought it was to reduce over-spending on player salaries.

I guess portland and brooklyn never got the memo that there was a new cba in place.

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

@anonymous: Shawne Williams was actually one of the played included in the Gerald Wallace deal, but I get your point.

  • http://bebe310.blogspot.com/ anonymous

@gerard really?? thanks for the correction

  • RunNGun

That’s too much for Crash (I was thinking more in the 7-8M range for someone who is on the other side of 30 and very injury prone) but hey you gotta pay for players you want, right?

  • Clydesays

GW isn’t THAT good of a vet. I like the idea of locking up solid vets to surround DWill and or Dwight, but 10 mil per for a guy who is perpetually injured is a stretch. Grant Hill is a better bet to stay healthy.

    Cash Wallace

Maybe 10 is a wee bit too much. I like his game, he’s coming after you all the time. The Joe Johnson proposed deal would be a cap killer. I like the low rent of Michael Beasley and Gerald Green. O.J. Mayo would be a nice fit at the 2. All would be under Joe’s salary. Jason Kidd comes with D Will, too. You have to have manageable salaries that you can move to get D12 next year. Maximize talent with lowest contract possible. Arenas fits in this mold, too. I’m 98% sure Agent Zero still has game and would be worth that $400K salary he got last year.

  • http://bebe310.blogspot.com/ anonymous

if brooklyn lands joe johnson who has 4 yrs and about $90 mil left on his contract (over $22 mil per year) then atlanta would be in a favorable position to trade for dwight and sign deron too. horford, teague, marvin will (maybe) & 2 draft picks for dwight would probably suffice. I think dwight is from atl so he would open to atl esp if deron considers going there. josh smith may also resign with atl if dwight and/or deron comes there

  • tpathi1

how many times was this guy an all star? i thought there was all these new salary cap restrictions nowadays, what other team would have offered general wallace 10 milly???

  • tpathi1

*10 mill a year for 3 years or 30 million? what other team would give him that offer?

  • http://bebe310.blogspot.com/ anonymous

danny ferry would become one of the best gms in the nba if he can dump j johnson`s on another team. deron should think twice about signing a long-term deal with a team that is run by organization-killer billy king. hes already overpaid g wallace and now he thinks getting j johnson and his outrageous contract is an equal substitute for not landing dwight howard. turnover-prone oj mayo should be left alone and kidd isnt needed unless bk gives up farmar who was quietly one of the best backup pgs last season averaging 10.4 pts, 3.3 assists on 46.7% fg and 44% 3-pt in 21 minutes.
