Carmelo Anthony Hopes the Knicks Re-Sign Jeremy Lin

Despite publicly stating that the money Jeremy Lin is being offered on the market is “ridiculous”, Carmelo Anthony claimed last night that he would like for the New York Knicks to re-sign the young point guard. Per CBS Sports: “On the eve of their deadline to match the Rockets’ three-year, $25.1 million offer sheet for Jeremy Lin, the Knicks have yet to tip their hand. Multiple people involved in the process said that New York has not communicated its intentions to Houston or to Lin’s camp. But there was a school of thought in league circles Monday that the Knicks matching the massively back-loaded offer for Lin should not be ruled out. Doing so would require that one of the Knicks’ big salaries would have to be moved in the next two years or the team would face a potentially massive luxury-tax bill in 2014-15. If they matched Lin’s offer sheet, which calls for him to be paid $5 million next season, $5.225 million in 2013-14 and $14.9 million in 2014-15, the Knicks would have $80 million committed to five players in the balloon-payment year of Lin’s deal. Viewed another way, if the Knicks added the necessary players between now and then through the draft and other means, Lin’s nearly $15 million salary in 2014-15 would cost them $43 million, including $28 million in luxury tax under the new tax rates that take effect with the 2013-14 season. [...] ‘I hope we can get it done, man,’ Anthony said after Team USA beat Brazil 80-69 in the Americans’ final tuneup on home soil before the London Olympics. ‘I would love to see him back. Honestly, I would deflinitey love to see him back. But knowing the business of basketball, it’s kind of a tough situation for both parties. For Jeremy, I know that he definitely wants to be back in New York and (Madison Square Garden chairman) James Dolan definitely wants him back. But it’s just a matter of figuring it out at this point.’ [...] ‘I always get backlash; it’s nothing new,’ Anthony said. ‘It was ridiculous for them to do what they did as far as throwing that out there and making it tough on us to sign him back. That’s why it’s called free agency, though.’”

    SMH how spooky…

    Felton is better

  • http://www.nba.com/knicks danfields

@the seed: depends. if felton reports to camp in shape, hes better. if not, then were f***ed (in case lin leaves)

  • http://none bogoyme

what’s the use of getting kidd? oh wait he’s gonna report training camp=DRUNK!!!! they will use Lin for marketing purposes man. Chinese n$gga gonna bring home Dolan some mad $

  • patrick

    Don’t resign! Felton>Lin

  • Mas

It’s all about the money and Lin can generate more money the Carmelo-Amare-Tyson combined for Dolan. I don’t see how he let’s Lin go. Actually with Kidd and Felton in the mix I see Lin playing the 2 guard like Terry (or JJ Barea) did for the Mavs when he and Kidd were both on the floor. Kidd can distribute and Lin can cut to the basket. Felton can be in there to run the pick and roll with Amare and everyone is happy. No way they win a title but at least they will be happy. By the time year 3 comes along they can package one of the expiring contracts or dump them with the amnesty clause.

  • patrick

I sitll don’t get why it was ‘ridiculous’…

  • Bt

@mas yeah they can try to dump them with the amnesty clause that they’ve already used, great idea. I don’t seehpw that couldn’t work.

Random racism still isn’t cool. And yes, it’s racist. The joke was based on laughing at a racial slur. That’s racist.
And Melo is still quite good at backtracking at Madison Square Garden.

  • chasman

anthonys statements do not ring true!!! And I believe he’s just trying to cover his arse. For the things he’s said before. HE doesn’t want them to resign Lin and he knows it!!! phony

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHoliday

just the other day, Melo said his contract was ridiculous. That quote was either taken way out of context or Melo needs to back peddle this well on defense!

  • O

Word @ Allenp. If the Knicks do decide to match everyone will lose their minds and say how stupid their front office is – which is a given at this point – but I think that they intend to trade Lin or someone else before that monster 3rd year. So having Lin at 5 mill a year for the next two isnt a bad idea IF they do actually intend to shed salary before that crazy luxury tax hits. And best believe that people will blame this on Melo and only Melo even if he has nothing to do witn it. Imagine how they’ll crucify him should Felton and Kidd struggle mightly next season? Of course he “wants Lin back.” Saying otherwise would be blasphemy!

PR move…. also somebody needs to go in the knicks melo-amare-tyson core IMO

  • dsleepy

@slick ric: there’s a reason an ESPN editor got fired for letting the same headline go on the espn.com site. i know you were trying to be funny and with (hopefully) no ill intent but the way you can just nonchalantly say something that hurts people in a way you don’t even know…that was just disrespectful and classless. ask yourself, would you be cool with saying that same thing to a group of chinese people in NYC chinatown? if there’s a contingency of people you would be scared of saying something to, then maybe you should STFU instead of hiding behind your keyboard and carelessly typing racial slurs. SLAM, please moderate.

I don’t really think that’s Slic. Rather that was the real Slic or not I personally don’t care what someone says on the internet so I’m not going to get pissed off about it. Everyone has a right to say things it’s not what you’re called it’s what you answer to.

  • bull22

@the seed, thats the most ridiculous statement i have read today. felton never carried any team on his back the way lin did when all of those knick players were hurt. find me a game where felton outdueled kobe bryant, which does not happen to often. 25 mil for three years is a cheap risk i would take to see what lin’s ceiling is. problem is dolan the dumbarse has all of the money tied into 3 players who are overpaid considering a porous 1-8 record in playoffs.

Remember that time that Melo swung on Mardy Collins and then backpedalled away right after? This is just like that.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

To be clear, the true cost, according to ESPN, for Lin’s final contract year is $15 million in salary and $45 million in luxury tax penalties. That’s $60 million people.

  • LA Huey

MCho, pretty sure that’s what Allenp was alluding to.

But yeah, maybe Melo meant the structure of Lin’s contract is ridiculous, not the money. But I doubt he meant that. He was probably told how much his comments made him look like a jerk. Most teammates just say “He should do what’s best for him and his family. We just hope that includes staying with us.”

@AllenP. The day we can accept and laugh at cross racial humor will be the day racism will come to an end.
Beware of the person that says he doesn’t see color… unless he walks with a cane off-course.
    allright I’m off coonin!

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

To act like Lin is better than Felton as a pg is straight ridiculous. Felton put up better numbers as a pg and Lin is a sg. When he is a regular player again, everyone will say. He only started about 25 games, so we did not get to see him play for a season.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

    No prob man

  • http://Www.slamonline.com T-Ray

Love you Slic. You’re more than a friend to me.

@Allenp….the total cost is $43M including $28M of luxury tax.

@Allenp….the total cost is $43M including $28M of luxury tax, which is still waaaaaay too much

I’m about sick of hearing about this low buget Asian version of Jason Williams not as flashy but just a high risk low reward kinda guy, Melo you don’t need Jeremy to win you need to commit your lazy as$ on D and become a leader not just a scorer. He needs to have a FULL MVP like season not just a month where he fills it up..

words from a fed up Melo fan

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I figured, Ric. My bad, but we should really just blame SLAM for their comment system, lol. And my last comment was directed at your troll, not you.

  • Rik Smits Mullet

From a business perspective they probably make more money of off Lin then they do of Melo.
But what the heck he got traded anyways.

  • L Dribble

For those people saying “they would make the money back from tv rights and jersey sales alone” – you should read this article on Yao Ming and his commercial effect on the Rockets – to quote: “sponsorship revenues suggest he had smaller-than-expected commercial value to the team” …Estimates from sponsorship experts IEG are that the Rockets earned somewhere between $800,000 to $1.25 million in deals from all their China-related sponsorships…less than a percentage point of the Rockets’ estimated $150 million a year revenue…….Meanwhile, Yao’s jersey was a top-10 seller in China each year except the last two….But that money didn’t go to the Rockets directly; in the NBA the revenue from those jersey sales, as well as foreign TV rights, are equally distributed between all 30 teams.
