DeMarcus Cousins Doesn’t Get Why Jerry Colangelo Called Him Immature

Quite maturely and politely, DeMarcus Cousins asked USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo why he labeled him as an immature player and person through the media. Cousins is apparently still waiting for a satisfactory answer. Per the Sac Bee: “He wanted to know specifically why USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo characterized him as ‘immature’ and ‘with a long way to go’ during a teleconference with reporters Saturday. ‘I actually just had a conversation with (Colangelo),’ Cousins revealed after Monday’s scrimmage between the Select Team and members of the recently named U.S. Olympic squad. ‘I asked him, ‘How was I being immature?’ He never really gave me an answer. I mean, I really wanted to know. I took offense to it. … It definitely bothered me.’ The mini-controversy – and that’s what this is – began when Cousins stepped onto the practice court Friday and became too physical for his own good. Or, according to some of the USA Basketball types who watched the part of the session closed to the media, too physical and too aggressive for the good of the team. Too much fouling. Too much trash-talking. Too much complaining about favoritism (edge, Olympians) to the referees. Too many frowns, head shakes and frustrated hand flips. [...] On Monday, Colangelo learned Cousins won’t bare fangs when you tell him to calm down. ‘Everything’s cool,’ Colangelo said when reached later in the day. ‘He wanted an explanation. I was trying to be more encouraging than anything else.’”

I can see his point but it was bush league to call him out like that when he is practicing with the squad.

With his behavior in Sacramento, DeMarcus has made himself a target. His antics got Paul Westphal fired. Westphal was a great shooter and one of the best SGs in the NBA. He never backed down from anybody. He played on some great Phoenix Suns teams. It just so happens that Colangelo ran the Suns club for many years. Since DeMarcus undermined Westphal he is now a marked man. You reap what you sow.

Westphal got himself fired by being a horrid coach. Did you see the horrible sets the Kings ran under him? It was pathetic. Yes, that collection of talent is among the most mismatched in the League, but Westphal made them look even worse. At least Keith Smart has them competing. And then Westphal tried to undermine his players through the media.
Cousins has attitude issues. He is too demonstrative for sure. But he also plays hard and nasty all the time. No respect for any other player, which is what you need sometimes. He just needs to work on his shooting touch and fouling. Colangelo was wrong for what he did. If he wanted to talk to Cousins, all he had to do was take him aside. Instead he blasted him through the press.

Agree with Colangelo letting people know. Other people have too, Barkley and them spent a lot of time on national tv talkiing about cousins’ immaturity.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

The job Westphal did in Sacramento is hard to ascertain given the fact that Sacramento doesn’t have any talent. Red Holtzman could have coached that team and they would not have won many more games. Westphal needed leadership and production from key players, including Cousins, that he never got. Cousins’ lack of effort at times and public spat with Westphal didn’t help matters either. All Cousins had to do was play his heart out and if Westphal still got fired then so be it. That said, Cousins’ public spat made him seem like an immature hothead who did not know his place … and now he’s reaping what he sowed.

    1. paul westphal got himself fired because of a) his ineptitude and b) deciding unilaterally, without the support of the front office, to take disciplinary actions against a player.
    2. dmc keeps it all the way hundred lol. colangelo called him out in the media and he thought he deserved an explanation, can’t be mad at that.

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

    Paul Westphal is that you?

  • T-Money

    haha hadn’t seen allen’s comments. co-sign.

Paul Westphal told DMC not to stay home because of trade rumours that may or may not have been true. LOL. Honestly, Cousins just wants an explanation why Colangelo went out of his way just to say Cousins is Immature. Colangelo couldn’t even give him an answer.

Barkley has an extreme bias towards Westphal. he basically said he didn’t know what was going on in Sacramento, but he was taken Westphal’s side because that’s his guy.
Then, Westphal gets canned, the Kings become semi-respectable, and Cousins plays with crazy energy.
I have watched numerous Kings games, that team is a mess. They wasted several draft picks on Jimmer Fredette, whose main skill is jacking contested jumpers early in the shot clock while looking off at least three other more talented players.
Marcus Thornton shoots like he has an orgasm every time the ball leaves his hand. Tyreke clearly has no idea how to play basketball without dominating the ball off the dribble.
Cousins and Thompson spend most of the game running the floor and hoping for offensive rebounds. The Kings drafted Donte Greene, spent four years watching him hoop, and still don’t know whether he’s any good.
They need to trade Evans or Thornton. They need to start getting Cousins more touches on the block. Fredette needs to be moved to Utah. There are a lot of things that need to change out there, but Cousins is easily the best piece they have right now.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

*oops. meant to say “told DMC to stay home”

  • MikeC.

The Kings organization contributed to Cousins’ immaturity. Of course he’s going to do and say some dumb things. He’s still a kid. They failed him by not having a solid big man vet on the roster to show the kid the ropes. There’s a reason why guys like Juwan Howard hang around years after their on-court production drops. They’re basically assistant coach/camp counsellor/baby-sitter/cool uncle for the young kids. If nobody shows Cousins how to do things the right way, we can’t act mad when he does things the wrong way.

I side with Demarcus over Colangelo on this one guys. It’s insulting to call a guy immature and then offer no proof as to why you said that.

  • Sam J

As someone said on the original thread yesterday, Immature people take offense to comments like this…
Look what’s happened. Demarcus needs to take this with a pinch of salt and prove his worth mentally and physically not call out colangelo

  • Basketball_iQ

its immature to approach Colangelo about the comments… just show them youre not immature with your play and attitude towards the game. To be all in practice going at teammates is stupid. Can you imagine what they must be thinking? I’ll tell you: With the way act IN PRACTICE, you’ll go overseas and pop off on a ref or another, maybe even strike someone. Growup. Thats probably why they got you there anyway.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

A lot of this is subjective. But the Westphal-Phoenix-Colangelo connection is real. Westphal was a tough, satandup player who never backed down from a challenge … Never quit on his coach, team or city. That has allowed him to build up a lifetime of goodwill amongst coaches and player. Cousins will never know anything about this ’cause as soon as his skills erode he will get blackballed.

  • ctk

so he immature cuz dont BACKDOWN to the stars of the league….he calls out the obvious as far as calls against his squad ..he just not friends with everybody whats wrong with that..smdh

  • toinefan88

There’s another guy who likes to dominate the ball off the dribble who just won a chip. Tyreke is the best thing Sac has by far.

  • http://www.nba.com/2012/news/features/david_aldridge/07/09/morning-tip-free-agency/index.html Allenp

I don’t see it as immature to approach someone and ask them to explain their negative comments about you. That is how I would handle a situation. In fact, you could argue that’s how the Bible encourages us to handle situations. “If you’re brother has aught with you…”

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Allen: I would say trade Evans and start Thornton alongside Isiah Thomas. Isiah Thomas is the best guard on that team.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

I agree with iq. And yeah Allen cousins is their best player no doubt but he has a horrible attitude. Playing hard is great when u leave it on the court.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

What was Colangelo supposed to say, “I’m clapping back at you for undermining Westphal, who happens to be a member of the Suns’ family I am also a part of?”

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

    Cosign Allen
Nothing wrong with seeking out the person who was speaking about you and asking for an explanation. And I would trade Evans as well. I always thought his hype coming out of Memphis was little overrated.

  • ash

@ Stock Exhange the way to handle it was to bring him aside and say it to his face along w explantion of why.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Ash, I’m not agreeing or disagreeing … The only thing I co-sign to is “you reap what you sow.”

Did you you just compare Tyreke to LeBron? Please tell me you did not just compare Tyreke to LeBron.

    Shock Exchange
So, that means that Westphal getting fired is an example of him reaping what he sowed? Cool.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Your sense of humor “ceases to amaze me.” Keep it up.

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY05

@allenp, you beat me to it with that lebron and reke comparison. You dont compare a Rolls Royce to an Infiniti! That just shouldnt happen!

  • toinefan88

Reke is a smaller version of Bron, he goes like 20, 5, and 5 while dominating the ball all game. Bron is Reke on steroids.

  • toinefan88

Ok well that shows how much Sac ball I’ve watched lately, he’s dipped to around 16.5, 5, and 5. I just like his style, and the way he attacks is similar to Lebron. I’m not saying they’re on the same level but he’s one of my favorite players to watch and I think it would be a mistake to trade Evans unless you got a lot of value for him. He is very young still, I believe he was one and done at Memphis and has played only 3 seasons. He easily has 10 years of similar if not better production in him.

The reason Colangelo never gave Cousins an explaination is that you don’t tell an immature guy that big to his face that he is immature.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

lol @ AllenP statement about Marcus Thorton.

  • T-Money

Colangelo on discussion w/ DeMarcus Cousins: “I told him, as far as I was concerned, just bury it. It’s a non-issue” …then he shouldn’t have made it an issue! i think colangelo realizes that he kind of messed up.

  • V

Colangelo just gave Landry Fields 20 mil over 3 years. He’s immature too. Could use some growth.

  • MeloMan15

@V we’re talking about different colangelos buddy

  • http://www.slamonline.com Chubachuchi

Reke is nowhere near LeBron. Just because his rookie stats were a mini version of Bron’s numbers doesn’t mean they’re similar. LeBron has always been considered of the best players of the league because he can do anything with or without the ball. He’s probably the best cutter in the league along with DWade. He’s an elite defender and can dish as good as the Chris Pauls of the world. He also has a post up game and an improving jumpshot. Oh did a mention he’s a 6-8 260 pound dude who can play every position

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

And he’s the long awaited savior who will free us from the enslavement of the machines… Oh wait, wrong movie.
