Denver Nuggets Signed JaVale McGee to 4-Year, $44 Million Deal

It was originally reported that the Denver Nuggets and restricted free agent JaVale McGee were negotiating a 5-year, $50 million deal, but in the end, the two sides settled on a slightly shorter contract. Per the Denver Post: “The deal is a four-year, $44 million contract, his mother, Pam McGee, confirmed. The 7-foot McGee was a restricted free agent this summer, but the Nuggets made no secret that he was a top priority. The Nuggets now have signed the maximum 15 players. In 20 games for the Nuggets last season, after arriving in the Nene trade with Washington, McGee averaged 10.3 points per game and 5.8 rebounds. He also finished second in the NBA in blocked shots (2.16). ‘We are so excited to be a part of the Denver Nugget family, and the wonderful Denver community,’ Pam McGee said in a text. The 24-year-old McGee inevitably will start at center for Denver alongside power forward Faried, who finished third last season in the voting for rookie of the year. Both players were featured routinely on highlight reels with their sky-walking dunks. During the playoffs against the Los Angeles Lakers, Nuggets coach George Karl was asked about McGee, who had two huge games. ‘I don’t think I’ve ever coached a guy like this,’ said Karl, who got his first NBA head coaching job in 1984. ‘He has the kind of moves of a 6-6 player. The guy he kind of reminds me of a little bit is (1970s star) Connie Hawkins. There’s this long, unfolding one-handed stuff. He’s got a long way to go to become Connie Hawkins.’”

I would have let this joker take his underachieving ass right to Europe where he belongs.

I have a feeling McGee is going to have a bit of a breakout year. I can see him getting 15, 9, and 2 plus blocks a game. Eventually, I would not be surprised if Karl can maximize his potential, get him to limit his mental mistakes, and turn him into a borderline All-Star.

As a Denver fan I love this! I think he can be a really good player under the right circumstance and the Denver style of play seems to suit him perfectly.

I think and I hope he keeps improving. He may be worth more than this deal.

First Kareem Abdul Jabbar, now Connie Hawkins; Karl needs to stop breathing that mile high air.

Big men always get paid – and what statistical category was Lin second in? Turnovers?

IF you have to compare deals compare this one with the B. Lopez deal or the R. Hibbert deal but not the LIN deal. Come on! Don’t be Dolans! Use common sense, it’s free.

Seems about right based on his past two years. Hope he develops a decent offensive move though.

as a wizards fan who watched him his first 4 yrs…he always had the potential, just needed an actual COACH. but even that said, 44 over 4 yrs seems too high, given his current body of work. he has more blooper reels than highlight reels

Denver gonna have a real mean big mea tandem for some years to come n Javale will prove to no longer be a joke.

that’s great, McGee has crazy potential and with the Manimal they will be a defensive presence in the west only lakers n OKC can match (besides the Jazz with Al n the pf on there team?? i forgot)…. but that shows how entertaining the jazz are with or with out coach sloan…
i would love to watch there switch n help defence on guys with manimals brute n mcgees length, and just watch them zoom after fast breaks after fast breaks, they will be dangerous on the open floor and with a full season about to start, chemistry will be key…
final statement: McGee is worth the gold, the nuggets are willing to offer him..
