Dwight Howard Only Willing to Re-Sign With One Team

by Yaron Weitzman | @YaronWeitzman

It’s taken nearly a year, but it appears that Dwight Howard has finally admitted, or at least come close to admitting, what we’ve all known for a while: that he wants to make Brooklyn his home. Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Howard has informed Magic GM Rob Hennigan that there is only one team that he is willing to sign with when his current contract expires after this season.

From Yahoo! Sports:

As the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets and other teams prepare possible trade offers for him, Howard told Yahoo! by phone that, “There’s only one team on my list and if I don’t get traded there, I’ll play the season out and explore my free agency after that.”

Howard wouldn’t specify the team, but multiple league sources believe that it is the Brooklyn Nets.

Howard met with new Magic general manager Rob Hennigan on Friday in Los Angeles, and said he told Hennigan of his desire to be traded. However, Howard insisted he was merely repeating a position he had made clear to Magic officials since waiving his ETO in March.

Howard, who is recovering from back surgery which he underwent in April, also had a response for those who claimed that he was faking the injury:

“I’ve never faked anything,” Howard told Yahoo! Sports. “I’d never fake a back injury to not play for my team. I played a lot of games in a lot of pain, and there were times that I was crying in the locker room afterward because I was so seriously hurt. But I kept fighting. I’ve played with a cracked sternum in the past, and played with a lot of different [injuries].”

It will certainly be interesting to watch where this all goes from here. Do the Nets have the pieces to trade for Howard right now, or will they just try to sign him after the season? Is Deron Williams willing to re-sign with Brooklyn, and play out the year without Howard? Will this scare the Rockets and Lakers away? For now, all we can do is wait and see.

i hope this gets squared away soon, it is putting a damper on the free agency period. If he does get to the Nets and Deron stays, they could easily come out of the east

Shut the f**K up Dwight Coward!!!!!

  • TSmoove

If I were te Nets I wouldn’t even trade for him. If he’s comin anyway, why give up peices and picks for him. Maybe it’s be but I would try to blindly rob the Magic. Offer a 1st round pick for him and that’s it. You have to trade him if you’re the Magic. Will other teams trade for him if they know he isn’t staying? Maybe it’s just me…

orlando and brooklyn needs to get a deal done sending dwight to the nets by the end of the week. if youre rob hennigan forget about houston and la. if your billy king please leave joe johnson and his 4 yr $90 mil alone. send him to brooklyn. this story is killing free agency only one after it began. lopez, brooks & draft picks for dwight. make it happen

  • Wayne

After everything why should the Magic listen to him? If I was them I would trade him to whatever team offers the best pieces for him, and if thats not Brooklyn then tough ! He should get no say in a trade.

  • fitzy

they should make his last year in orlando as miserable as possible

  • http://www.macknificentcasey.com/ Macknificent31

I dont know why he’s so set on Brooklyn. He had a hard time dealing with the Orlando media last year. Imagine how bad the NY media will be on him on a not so great Nets team

  • mike

MAGIC should see what oklahoma is offering… they made it to the finals, and with KD , Westbrook and Howard together, they should be able to put up a good chance to take the title from MIAMI…. If they win or even if they lose , if dwight leaves OKC it will show he really is not concerned about winning , but more concerned about other factors….a

I think the whole reason he is so stuck on Brooklyn is because the owner has made promises that he wants to win championships and will do whatever it takes to get one. We all know that doesn’t mean they will ever win one, but in the mind of a player who has been in the situation Dwight Howard finds himself in those words are worth gold. I personally don’t think they have the talent pool to win a championship as they are built right now. Even adding Dwight Howard isn’t going to put them over the top. They’ll have two whining superstars on their team, and a collection of role players who have been trade bait on every team they’ve been on. He needs to stay in Orlando, wait for a few of those hefty contracts to expire and then jump on the phone lines in a couple of summers and attract some big name free agents.

As much as he is telling the truth that he has been transparent about what he wants “a trade, and he would only resign with a team he wanted to be on” – anyone that believed otherwise is naive. But don’t sit there and say you were “crying in the locker room after games” – nobody feels pity for you Dwight. And that just makes you seem like more of a b*tch to most people.

  • RunNGun

Man… don’t y’all know he wants to up with the Knicks? LMFAO

  • MikeC.

If Orlando can’t get another star back in a trade, they should just let him walk as a FA. Call his bluff. How much money is he willing to leave on the table by losing his Bird rights? Why take back sub-par players and mess up their cap even more?

  • Sam

forgive me for this but if I was the knicks I’d trade melo, they need to give up with this isolation bs, melo is not a good enough defender at his position for the knicks to win anything. Not that they’d win with Howard but he’d be instilling the mentality a bit more. Jus’ sayin

Howard really wants to stay in Orlando but is trying to pressure tha brass to bring in more talent.

Hello Brooklyn, make this happen. Lopez, Petro, Farmer, Morrow and a pick for D-12. That will keep Deron in NYC! You would have a solid lineup of D-Will, Marshon, Gerald Wallace, Hump, and D-12. Not a bad look.

  • tpathi1

haha dwight ‘never faked anything’ – well what was you doing the past year and half?!

  • TV63

Get the best deal and run with it! He’s gone. Take advantage of this time and get what you can get and rebuild. Don’t look back. The sooner the better. He’s just to toxic for the team. I can’t believe how vain he is. Snub his nose at the best teams out there because he doesn’t want to share the limelight. Selfishness will not win you NBA championships. Cut the ties and start over.

RunNGun’s girlfriend (or boyfriend) got RunNGunned by a few Knick players. This guy stays with a Knick d*ck in his mouth.

  • tpathi1

the magic should just bench him the whole year and mentally scar him..nobody but the nets will trade anything for him at this point, and i was the nets i would be more than willing to wait an extra year to get him

  • MeloMan15

Honestly I just hope Orlando keeps him for this season, make the sissy suffer as much as possible

  • hyperactive

@kholiday orlando is going to want brooks over farmar and morrow. farmar is more valuable as the nets backup pg. he averaged 10 points a game last season in 21 minutes on 47% shooting from 2s and 44% from 3s. and farmar has nice size at 6-2. lopez, brooks, morrow & 2 draft picks for dwight. a 2nd year player in brooks is easily replaceable.

Did anyone else know Brooklyn was looking to get Joe Johnson? Why would they get Joe Johnson wouldn’t that take some money away from Howard if he decides to go?

  • jose

I think NJ will end up trading for him, only for the fact that they need to show Deron Williams that their serious about keeping him and creating something big in Brooklyn, i don’t think it would be wise to let Deron play through another bad season with the hope that dwight still wants to go there. i know he’s said it many times, but teams can make moves to get better , attract dwights interests more.

  • https://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway/status/213315516360687617 nbk

T-Ray, they can’t wait for Howard forever. If they can’t get Howard, they have to try and entice Deron Williams to stay. Dwight is crazy to think Brooklyn will just be there waiting for him for another year. Porkorov wants to win now, not later.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7C0vd-L5lg Munky

^^I read that a few days ago. No way the Nets have enough money to land Deron Dwight and Joe. Unless they end up gutting the team, while Dwight and Deron take paycuts, it’s not gonna happen. Plus, who would they give up for him? Hawks don’t need or want any of the Nets players. They’d need to get a third team involve.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7C0vd-L5lg Munky

    That was for T-Ray

  • RunNGun

Munky: No need to hate mang! The Knicks are in the rumors for everyone. I’m just stating the facts like Skip Bayless and Stephen A.Smith; just check SportsCenter.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

RunNGun, I wouldn’t be comparing myself to Skip Bayless…

  • https://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway/status/213315516360687617 nbk

if you are spitting something Skip Bayless is spitting it isn’t facts. it’s diarrhea

  • O

Had Melo said this last f*ckin year, we would’ve still had Felton, Gallo, Mozgov and a draft pick from whichever year we gave it up. But nooooooo, Melo wanted his money one way or another…

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

I agree nbk I think that would be a good way to keep Deron but to Munky’s point that’s just too much money and someone would have to take a paycut plus gut the team.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    LOL @ nbk.

  • D12FSU

Speaking on behalf of Orlando magic fans, the Nets have NOTHING that we want. Personally I want Bynum first, then whatever package Houston offers, then maybe what GS offers but only of OT includes Barnes

  • D12FSU

    If it*

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Cosign D12, from the other Magic fan here.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

The real question is how much other teams are prepared to offer if they know Howard will be a drama-filled one-year rental. Will the Lakers offer Bynum for a year of Howard? The only solution for Orlando (if, understandably, they don’t want what the Nets offer) is to wait and see if the Nets tire of Howard and burn their cap space on other players this summer. Fortunately for them Billy King might just be stupid enough to do that.

  • https://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway/status/213315516360687617 nbk

if I was Dwight i’d not admit it, but i would be willing to sign in Golden State. Assuming they can keep Curry, Thompson, & Barnes. There really isn’t a better young core in the league (offensively) to put around Dwight. Shooters Shooters Shooters. Shooters Shooters. Plus Golden State is a big market, their fans are so hungry for a star they would have no ill feelings towards Dwight unless he is injury riddled. that situation is about as good as it gets.

  • Sundance

I’m tired of hearing about this clown

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I think I speak for the other 29 teams when I say THANK GOD.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

You don’t even speak for the name you represent

  • NetsRTakingOver

If only Dwight demanded this in the first place, no flip flopping

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMo_HcRBnUY LakeShow

    LOL @ the nbk’s.

  • BaronVonCool

A Howard and Williams duo still wont have enough to come out of the East. Miami and Chicago are still better. The Nets would prolly be as good as the Knicks; second round team. If Howard really cared about winning championships he would try to get traded to Chicago, OKC, Golden State or no one has brought up the T-Wolves. Rubio, Love, and Howard would be an Elite Team.

  • Tarzan Grant

so if Dwight gets traded to a team, lets say the Thunder, he won’t resign with them because he wants to play for Brooklyn?!?!?!? What drugs is he taking cause if I’m Howard theirs only 2 teams I wan to get traded to, OKC and Chicago because those 2 teams are young, play defense, and I(speaking as if I was Howard), could put these teams over the hump and win not 1, not 2, not 5, not 6, not 7, but multiple rings. However, I’m Howard so let him go to Brooklyn and be just another shoulda, coulda, but wasn’t

  • BaronVonCool

@ Tarzan I think Howard really does not care about winning championships as much as he cares about making money and building his “brand” even though with all his antics these past 2 years no one really likes him anyone. Thats why he’s not trying to go to teams where he can win multiple Championships; at least with Miami, Chicago, and OKC contending for the next 3-5 years.

  • https://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

So, Joe Johnson to Nets is pretty much a done deal.

  • MeloMan15

Munky, turns out hawks do want some nets players after
