Dwight Howard Trade Being Discussed By the Nets and Magic

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

Dwight Howard still wants to be traded, and he might get his wish afterall, of playing alongside Deron Williams (and now, Joe Johnson) in Brooklyn.

According to a published report, the Orlando Magic and Brooklyn Nets are discussing a blockbuster trade for the big fella.

Per ESPN and the Star-Ledger:

The Nets and the Orlando Magic are discussing a trade that would send Howard to the Nets for Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks and the Nets’ first-round picks in 2013, 2015 and 2017, sources said. Lopez and Humphries, who are both free agents, would go to Orlando in sign-and-trade deals.

With the Nets having traded for Atlanta’s Joe Johnson on Monday, such a trade would give them a potential big three players of Howard, Johnson and Deron Williams — presuming Williams re-signs with the Nets as a free agent. Lopez and Humphries are free agents, so would have to consent to a sign-and-trade. Lopez, a restricted free agent, enjoys Disney World, which is in Orlando, and is best friends with the Magic’s Ryan Anderson, who is also a restricted free agent. Humphries, who averaged a double-double for the Nets in each of the past two seasons, lives in Florida in the offseason.

A combination of Dwight Howard, Deron Williams and Joe Johnson would provide the Nets with one of the best trios in the NBA, and make for an electric debut in Brooklyn.

This would also come at an enormous cost — Howard, Johnson and Williams would eat up $58.8 million, with last season’s salary cap being set at $58.3 million.

  • http://www.slamonline.com raylan

is this even possible with all the Nets contracts?

  • Charles

D12 is the biggest joke in the NBA. Hope Deron signs anywhere but BK

  • FnF

LOL… I can imagine Prohkorov dangling some Disney World passes in front of Brook to sweaten the deal so he buys into being traded.

  • ML

dont forget the contract of G-wallace

  • Fresh Boirdee

The “Big3″… SMH. Something that just happened to work out has now become a trend.

  • tpathi1

    wtf..lopez is a fan of disneyworld?!a hahaaha

  • Fat Lever

Three first round picks too? Wow, that would be a great haul for Orlando.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

8 hours earlier all I heard was that “the Nets signing JJ means they can not get Howard”. What the hell changed in the span of one night?
I’m so sick and tired of Broussard and his so-called sources.

  • BlackStar

I guess Prohkorov is trying to make good on his promise of the Nets winning a ring within his first 5 years of ownership. How long has he been with the Nets now? And it freaking sucks that they are becoming a powerhouse after leaving NJ … Straight garbage.

  • Heals

@JT21, I dunno if it’s pressure to report from his higher-ups or if he just wants to be the first to speak on something to look like he’s the most “in” with League news…

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Nets about to have a good team, JJ can shoot, Howard is the best defensive player in the NBA and Deron is one of the top point guards in the NBA. Magic actually gets some pieces back. Humphries can rebound, Brooks has potential when not playing me ball and Lopez game is improving in the post. Magic and Nets win. Howard should go to the Lakers, but he thinks playing with Deron is better, but Howard on Lakers with a good point guard is deadly. BOOK IT!!

  • jsmallz

Howard isa joke. But he should go to a team that already has a proven point guard all signed before he asks to be traded

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

so how do they re-sign him if they max out deron and joe j is owed like 30 mil each of the next htree years?

  • james

This will be good for magic if the nets will get the contract of Hedo and Jrich

  • Sizzle

@Jtaylor – Interesting enough, Ric Bucher reported last night on the 11 pm sportscenter that although the trade was considered “dead”, he also said don’t be surprised if somehow someway Howard ends up with the Nets. I think the Nets re-engaged in talks because getting D12 would all but seal Deron re-signing with Nets and there is no way Orlando can make it through the season again with this BS going on. With no other likely takers, this is actually a great deal for the Magic if with what they would get in return. Nets will be strizzaped though…

  • Robb

I remember when everyone was asking who is going to be the next player to be criticized now that lebron won a ring. Don’t need to look any further….DWIGHT HOWARD COME ON DOOOOOOOWNNN.

  • D12FSU

Can someone make me feel better by telling me Brooks’ upside :( Also.. If they magic keep Anderson and get humphries, the magic will have 7 PFs… wtf

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

I’ve been telling people that Brooklyn’s chances of getting Howard through a trade weren’t finished. The Nets – if they resign Williams – can’t get him through free agency next summer. They probably also can’t get him now, because I doubt the Magic will bite on this package. But it IS still possible – they have the contracts to make it work. The real question: if the Magic like what the Nets offer, can the Nets absorb the bad contracts the Magic would probably like to unload? Because Houston can.

  • ALD

what if deron williams or dwight decided to take less money …. how is this not possible

  • Mas

I think a line-up of B.Lopez at center, K. Humphries at the Power forward has the potential to grab a ton of rebounds and a good ammount of put backs on the offensive board. At the small forward Gerald Wallace is a mean guy. Now add Joe Jo and Deron and you have maybe the third best starting V in the East only behind the Heat and the Pacers (if the keep Roy). You get too keep M. Brooks and G.Green to come of the bench to provide massive energy and points. I see this as a the formula to win. Getting Howard will only assure they do not have the balance you need to win in this league. Ask the Knicks if their Big 3 is working.

  • onlytheflyest

    they have a billionaire owner…

  • http://www.nba.com/knicks danfields

the johnson howard williams scenario would mean 3 max plaers and 12 min players on a roster: how is this supposed to work?

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Orlando is like a woman who shows strong interest and then pulls back at the last minute. By mid-September, Dwight will be so thirsty he’ll be begging the Magic for a deal. In M&A parlance this is known as “deal heat.”

  • tpathi1

i dont see dwill going to the nets just to play with j johnson..that would be stupid!

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

This whole article completely forgot about Gerald Wallace.

  • dannyb

This is a very smart move by Prohkorov. Even if the deal doesn’t work out, he’s sending a message to Deron that he’s willing to spend money and take risks to build a championship team. I was hoping Deron would go to Dallas but I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays in Brooklyn now.

  • http://www.fullc0urtpress.com KHOLIDAY05

    @danfields, SEE MIAMI HEAT!

  • harv

williams and howard going to the mavs

  • EJ

I’m glad to know Lopez likes Disney World. TF?

  • ripslam

BK would be giving up a lot here. Not only would their bench be terrible, but their starting power forward would be Shelden Williams.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

DWill, JJ, Gerald Wallace, D12 is a scary core…that’s going to be a helluva good defensive team.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Showtime

This wont work as @ niq stated they just resign gwallace for 4o mill. I got joey huge contract. It either dwill or Howard. they don’t have the cap space to get both.

  • Salty

So…Brooks wants to go to Orlando so him and Ryan Anderson can go to Disney World together?

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

Broussard gets on my damn nerves.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

So, we are supposed to believe Orlando will take a trade that Nets that only 1 potential All-Star? Brook Lopez? K, sure.
    .
Those draft picks are not worth anything if Dwight, Deron, Joe are on the team you are getting them from. Might as well be second rounders.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Gerald Wallace has nothing to do with this. That’s why he is not mentioned.

  • sid

“This would also come at an enormous cost — Howard, Johnson and Williams would eat up $58.8 million, with last season’s salary cap being set at $58.3 million.” Isnt that sentence a little misleading since we dont know how much deron williams will be making next season? cosign danfields. how is 3 max contracts on one team going to work?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The Nets are owned by Mikhael Porkhorov that’s how it’s going to work. The “luxury tax” is more of a “petty cash” to him.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    This is the real problem:

    Assuming $9M for Crash: Crash + D-Will + D12 + Teletovic (full MLE) + Johnson=approx $70.46M. Not sure that’s workable w/ $74M hard cap.

  • http://www.businessinsider.com/nets-luxury-tax-dwight-howard-trade-2012-7 sid

dont think this trade will work on either front. why would orl send dwight to bk to possibly join forces with dwill, JJ and gwallace while getting back “6 rebounds per game” brook lopez, a nice player in humphries, 2nd year player brooks and 3 unproven draft picks. note: I heard bk can match any offer for lopez meaning that they can still get him back after trading him. as of right now, orl wouldnt be getting any current all-stars in this trade and could potentially help bk assemble a starting lineup of dwill, wallace, jj, lopez and dwight.
    .
in the case of bk it doesnt work financially. 2012 salaries:
    johnson – $19,752,645
howard – $19,536,360 (if trade goes through)
    wallace – $10,000,000
williams – (probably at least) $20,000,000 (if he resigns with bk)
    .
bk is already well over the salary cap with only 4 players.

billy king is in over his head. currently, the best options that would have deron williams and dwight howard playing on the same team is atlanta and dallas in that order. atlanta has 2 all-star pieces (horford or jsmith) they can dangle as trade bait to orl and they cleared up cap spacee by trading jj for nothing and getting back devin harris for marvin williams. I can see a 3-team trade involving orl-atl-an unknown of horford, teague, harris & 2 draft picks (from atl); dwight (from orl); and other unknown veteran players from an unknown team.

  • basketball_iQ

If these 3guys go to BK, its gonna be sick and I think Deron is waiting to see if Howard lands there…
no way as a true PG, you would NOT wanna run this team.
    Dallas is in trouble.

  • Wixurrs

Billy King paying a $143 million luxury tax would be the crowning achievement to his career. This would top the $70 million combined contracts in one summer for the powerful duo of Kyle Korver and Willie Green in the Billy King trademarked “Bid Against Yourself” negotiation tool. Not everyone can get in there and grab the 32nd and 33rd top free agents of the summer. He didn’t even have to crack 100k for those two. He’s not a GM, he’s an artist.

  • L Dribble

3 first round picks? I often do that in NBA2K12 to get a great player knowing that my record will be so good that the picks are worthless – didn’t realise people did this is in real life too…

  • sid

@wixurrs Ive been waiting for your appearance on this forum. billy king is a hot mess. I was ready to give this cat another go at it after his catastrophic hiccups in philly. dont forget about “the $10 million” glenn robinson contract. same old billy “no salary cap restriction” king.

  • Wixurrs

haha true. Did Glenn Robinson even play 5 games for them? Another legendary Billy King fact:

-At one point in the mid 2000s Billy King had 5 different head coaches still on salary at one time (Brown, Ayers, Ford, Obrien, Cheeks).

everyone please contribute! This could be the most entertaining thread of all time.

  • Fat Lever

Ok, the picks are guaranteed worthless because it’s not like a major injury could take Howard out or an extended period of time or anything. Or it’s not like the nets could package those picks for one lottery pick possibly. Yea, just take it at face value only with no creative alternatives.

  • jose

could they trade Gerald Wallace away even though he recently agreed to his new deal or is there a waiting period that exists. . .that could help. Lopez, humphries, and Wallace plus picks

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

THere is a waiting period. And Orlando is not making this deal for Dwight. Not unless they genuinely don’t care about being even semi relevant in the next 5 years.

  • bike

Orlando is pretty much screwed anyway you slice it

  • Jamel Brown

The trade for Lopez, Humphries , Brooks is not a bad move for Orlando ..this three players are good
Pick- ups, the magic can still make a run for the playoffs, with this three players , Dwight is only one
Player, all the magic have do is add on some good road players from the D League, to help the player rotation, you don’t need three star players to win..when you over the salary cap,You have to play your pennies right..theres skilled players out there in the D-league that are cheap to assist your three player trade..the magic are struggling to trade Dwight beause they are looking for replacement players in the places, hire new accountant, manger
